"Power Corrupts, Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely." This saying means that the more power one has the more corrupt they become. One that has power generally abuses it. In Macbeth many different people have power, and each use their power in a different way. Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, and the three witches each control some sort of power. What is their power, and how do they become corrupt with it?

The character of Macbeth displays little power. Macbeth is one of the weaker characters, but has the chance to have power in his hands. His only real power came when he murdered King Duncan and ruled over the people. However, this power leads him to his own death.

When Macbeth became king, power poured into his hands. Macbeth wanted nothing to knock him down. One person however, began to figure it all out; this was Banquo. When Banquo said he was not going to the banquet Macbeth knew he knew. "Our fears in Banquo stick deep…" (III, 1, 47-55). Therefore, Macbeth sent out assassins to have them killed. Macbeth used his power to convince the assassins that it would be the best for them to do this, not knowing that no matter what it would lead to their deaths. The assassins killed Banquo, but his son got away. Now that the assassins had killed for Macbeth, he had them killed. Macbeth's power already began to corrupt him and make him evil. Macbeth was taking lives just to insure his own safety.

Macbeth also showed much power over the people. "Send out moe horses, skirr the country round. Hang those that talk of fear" (V, , 5-7). Macbeth's power lead him to believe that he could treat the people as he wished and that lives didn't matter. Macbeth carelessly threw away lives like nothing. This made the people start to turn their backs on Macbeth, which started to bring him down.

The biggest flaw of Macbeth was that he believed he was unstoppable. This was because the three witches said his reign would come to an end when the Wood of Birnam came to his castle, and that he can only be killed by a man not born of women. "I will not be afraid of death and bane Till Birnam Forest come to Dunsinane" (V, 4, 5-60). Macbeth shows no fear because he feels powerful and thinks he's unstoppable. This is not true and leads him to his death. He fights thinking no one can kill him until Macduff gives him a vital wound.

Macbeth had a power which lead to his death. He thought he could control everyone by killing them. The power that Macbeth thought and felt he had, he abused it. This power turned around, only to spoil anything he could have had.

Lady Macbeth had a power in which she controlled Macbeth. She felt that Macbeth had no manly side to him. Lady Macbeth was the one with the plans and who made it all happen. Without her Macbeth would be nothing and probably wouldn't have fallen through with the murder.

Lady Macbeth wanted nothing more but the crown. In fact, she wanted it more than her husband, but if she couldn't have it Lady Macbeth would be just as happy with her husband having it. Since Lady Macbeth felt she had more manliness than Macbeth, to be a man herself would be a dream come true. "Come, you spirits That tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here, And fill me, from the crown to the toe, top-full Of direst cruelty..." (1, 5, -45). Lady Macbeth felt she had more manly power than her husband. She felt that she could do a better job of being king and murdering the present one. Lady Macbeth had the power that Macbeth needed.

The plan of the murder was all in Lady Macbeth's hands. She was the one who controlled it all. "Look like the time; bear welcome in you eye, Your hand, your tongue look like th' innocent flower, But be the serpent under't he that's coming Must be provided for and you shall put This night's great business into my dispatch…" (1, 7, 6-66). Lady Macbeth showed Macbeth who was the boss. Macbeth never argued with his wife and did as he was told. Lady Macbeth had total control of Macbeth and the king's death.

Knowing that Macbeth could easily be brought down gave Lady Macbeth the power she needed. She could mock Macbeth making him shrink like a tiny mouse. "Art thou afeard To be the same in thine own act and valor As thou art in desire? Wouldst thou have that Which thou esteem'st the ornament of life, And live a coward in thine own esteem…" (1, 7, -45). Lady Macbeth had every finger wrapped around Macbeth, making him at her beckoning call. She knew how to keep a short leash on her husband. However, her power over her husband and the murder would corrupt her and bring her down.

Lady Macbeth couldn't handle the power and control she had. It literally drove her insane and to her death. She thought she could get away with murder, when in the end it came after her. The power she had corrupted her and made her evil. Lady Macbeth wanted more than she could handle. She thought she could control the death of the king but was proven too weak for this.

The three witches possessed the most power of anyone in this play. They had power over both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. They controlled what would happen. The three witches brought Macbeth onto power and took it away.

The first prophecy tells Macbeth he will be king. "All Hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Glamis! All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor! All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter!" (1, , 47-50). The three witches hold power in Macbeth's life. Without this first prophecy Macbeth would have never thought about being king. Now that the witches have said this he wants to be king even more.

Macbeth told Lady Macbeth of the prophecy that he would be king. This made Lady Macbeth very desperate to fulfill this prophecy. If the witches hadn't of said anything to begin with, Lady Macbeth wouldn't have wanted to kill King Duncan. "What thou wouldst highly, That wouldst thou holily; wouldst not play false, And yet wouldst wrongly win. Thou'dst have, great Glamis, That which cries, "Thus thou must do" if thou have it; And that which rather thou dost fear to do..." (1, 5, 18-8). Lady Macbeth already decided what had to be done. They must kill King Duncan in order to have the crown.

Another way the three witches have power in Macbeth is that they make him feel confident. "Be lion-mettled, proud, and take no care Who chafes, who frets, or where conspires are Macbeth shall never vanquished be until Great Birnam Wood to high Dunsinane Hill Shall cone against him." (4, 1, 0-4). The three witches control when his reign as king will come to an end. However, they make him feel overly-confident and that no one can kill him. There were no trees outside his castle so he thought he would go on forever. The witches also told him that only man not born of woman could kill him. Macbeth also thought this could happen. Macbeth had no fear and would kill whoever got in his way.

The three witches had power over everyone and everything. Their power didn't so much corrupt them as it did those they had power over. They had power over Macbeth and his wife, and they both died in the end. The three witches corrupted the lives the entered and the people around them. They abused the power they had by putting evil into lives.

The more power one has the worse it gets. People become more evil with more power leading to destruction. As power accumulates, corruption gets the best of that person. A person can never win over power; it will eventually corrupt them or others.
