My Favorite Childhood Memories, it is so hard to choose because I do have a lot but here is one that when I was a child it happened once a year every year.

The week of the Fourth of July me, my mom, dad and brothers and sister would rent a house along with my Aunt Carleen, Uncle Chuck and my four cousins at the beach. We would get new clothes and go down buy groceries for the twelve of us and settle down to have a week full of fun, relaxation and well more fun. This week included going out to eat once as a big family one night, the parents going out to eat and have fun one night while we got pizza ordered in and got to watch movies and me getting to be the boss even though I wasn't the oldest. That was because until I was about eleven I was the only girl besides my mom and aunt which really doesn't count. But it also included my dad spending all the time with the guys (going golfing going to the ocean…) He would hardly ever play with me. Until about the third morning there (which usually ended up being the fourth of July) He would get me up extra early and he would take me out to eat like at burger king, McDonalds or somewhere like that because I loved biscuits and wasn't a very big breakfast eater. We would then head off to the Grocery store to pick up anything we needed for the rest of the week or just anything I wanted. Then off to unload everything at the house and hide the evidence of our morning breakfast so nobody found out until about lunch time that we had even left because they noticed the food that had appeared in the cabinets.

So even though he played with the guys I still knew that I was daddies little girl just as I am to this day even though he shows it a little differently. That is one of my series I guess you would say of my favorite childhood memories.

Summary

The following is a description of the organizational behavior of the Transportation Security Administration / TSA, at John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana, California. I speak to this subject with deep regard and respect as a result of being currently employed there as a screening supervisor. Much of the information I write is of a general nature due to the security sensitive status of my position and would deeply appreciate the understanding of the reader of my inability to talk in specifics of any given situation or issue.

Communication

The management at the Transportation Security Administration considers our organization to be a paramilitary group at the very least. Special attention is given to the ability of individuals to adhere to the standard operating procedure and follow direct orders with out question as long as they are within the boundaries of the standard operating procedure document.

Speaking for myself, I find this a less than easy situation to work in given that I am an intuitive-feeling type A personality that often sees things as they could and should be instead of the way they are in the current environment. (University of Phoenix, (Ed.) 00, pg) Let's just say that I'm good at self-monitoring or changing with required needs of other higher authority types. (University of Phoenix, (Ed.) 00, pg5)

The generally accepted way of communicating follows a chain of command with the subordinates held accountable for their actions and words by the direct superior. This concept is borrowed specifically from our nations military and police force leaving little room for personality types. In fact, I'm beginning to believe that the desired personality trait that was most desired upon hiring follows the authoritarianism belief of trusting higher authority. (University of Phoenix, (Ed.) 00, pg4) This does not mean there is no room for exception, instead it means that they went after a very specific type of person to insure the security of our nation and was willing to accept someone who was a little different as long they maintained a high ethical standard. In short, our communication at TSA tries to marry an open honest environment with strict adherence to rules and regulations.

Culture

The values and attitudes at John Wayne airport for the TSA are best described by Maglino and associates value category of helping and concern for others. (University of Phoenix, (Ed.) 00, pg8) I say this because if the pay scale does not reflect what the intensity and working conditions of their job in tale. The fact is they don't make much money when compared to the counties statistical average income. If any one were to ask why any of us took the job to begin with the general consensus would be the same for all, to do something of eminent good, the money is very secondary. The subculture is the majority with a tightly knit group bound with one very strong idealistic point of reference.

Another area of cultural makeup is ethnic and gender diversity. One must remember that we are a federal agency, and while hiring practices should be in line with equal opportunity employment practices, it is not the same EEO that the private sector adheres. We do have a screener workforce that is made up of about 65% women and 0% men over the age of 40. The other side of that equation is that most of them are Caucasians, which may not reflect the surrounding residential area. Again, the rules are a little different for the private sector as compared to a federal agency. In essence, anyone can take issue with our practices but does not have the ability to litigate an issue without the written approval of federal agency that is being sued.

Conflict

Conflict and conflict resolution is a major part of what the TSA organization does as a whole. Fortunately, the majority of the conflict is between the traveling public and our screeners and not between the screening workforces themselves. When I view the types of conflicts that my group is faced with, I can see that this is one of the major threads that makes us a little closer to each other as people. The majority seems to come to each other's side as a form of support to when the surrounding environment becomes difficult and serves as an aid in team building on a daily basis. When conflict between employees does arise it is dealt with swiftly since we are very much in the public eye and any dissemination between us is not acceptable and can result in undesired press coverage. The way conflict is handled is in accordance with typical military fashion, meaning we try to recognize the importance of each individuals view and insure the compliance to the set rules.

Other types of conflicts such as planned and unplanned change are resolved using mostly the rational persuasion strategy. (University of Phoenix, (Ed.) 00, pg 6) The change is presented as a result of a specific action that would constitute it being required for the sake of eminent good backed by facts.

Technology

Because of the security sensitive nature of my job, and the safety of our nation, I am not able to address this subject in any manner that would seem acceptable. I can say that TSA has all the latest technology available to thwart any attempt at terrorism and we are adopting new technology as it becomes available along with the training needed to use this technology effectively.

RAVENSTAIL WEAVING

Ravenstail weaving predates the Chilkat weaving by about 400 years, and for almost 00 years there were no known weavers. We say no known weavers because no one went to all the remote villages and asked, "Do you weave, and did your Mother or Grandmother weave the Ravenstail?" The natural progression of weaving was from the Cedar bark and spruce root weaving into the Ravenstail then the Chilkat weaving. The basket and Ravenstail weaving was all in the hands of the woman; she had full control of the designs. When the Chilkat weaving came about the men became involved. A Master carver would carve or paint a pattern board the size of the robe; the pattern would only be on one half of the board and the weaver had to create a mirrored image on the other half of the weaving. If the carver was a generous man he would create templates of the ovoids so the weaver could make sure her sizes were correct. The Ravenstail warp was originally from the Mountain Goat; since our hunting season is wrong for gathering their wool we now use merino sheep wool that is thigh spun. In the past 0 years people have tried to use spinning wheels and other spinning tools to spin the warp, but none of them spin what we need so we still do it the original way on a damp thigh. The traditional colors are white, black, and yellow. White was the natural color of the wool, black was from ash or iron ore, and the yellow was from wolf moss which grows on trees on the mainland.

Ravenstail was rediscovered by accident by a Chilkat weaver named Cheryl Samuels. She was in a museum researching the Chilkat weaving when she came across a box labeled Tsimsian yarn. She asked if she could look into the box and was left alone. When she opened the box it looked like a bunch of yarn but when she began moving the yarn she found it to be a woven robe. The robe was in very bad shape, but since she was a Chilkat weaver she knew she had found something special. This started her on a search of the known countries that had traded in Alaska to find any and all information on this form of weaving. In her travels she found 15 robes some were still whole but most were in pieces some pieces as small as a dime, some pieces where even in separate countries. Cheryl then returned to Alaska and began reteaching the Alaskans the art of Ravenstail weaving. The 15 robes are now called the Mother robes to show respect to the original weavers, and the robes are now our teachers.

Ravenstail weaving is done on an open loom, as is the Chilkat. The weaver is responsible to keep the tension proper along with the alignment. Ravenstail is done over or 4 warps at a time depending on the pattern she is working. All rows are worked one at a time tying off at the end of each row and inserting a fringe at the beginning of the row. All pattern areas are enclosed within a three strand twined box that ends with a braided tail, which is what the Ravenstail is named for. A Robe may take a year or more to weave and is sized for the person who has commissioned it.

In the past 0 to 5 years the Weavers have grown from 0 to over 00. This is my best guess based on the number of classes and students. Of course some students have woven only one item while others just keep on learning and making something new all the time.

Since Canada became a nation, many thing have happened that have defined Canada as a remarkable nation in progress. People can recall things like Vimy Ridge, the Persons Case, Dieppe, and the Quebec referendum. These four things have assisted in creating the Canada we now know.

In 117, during World War Two, Canadian troops fought at Vimy Ridge. The Germans had been protecting the ridge, and had already defeated the French and British troop in 115. The Canadians realized that they needed to outsmart the Germans, and use technology that had never been used in was before. The troops built roads, a railway track and buried 1 miles of signal cable. They laid out 66 miles of telephone wire. They even laddered the wires. This was when they had separate lines with connecting links, this way a shell wouldnt be able to ruin the connection. Tunnelling companies dug 11 underground halls to help infantry get to their positions safely. On April th (Easter Morning) at 50 am troops were awake and ready for battle. Almost 1000 guns opened fire. Imagine the loudest clap of thunder you ever heard.1

We used the leap frog effect. Usually, after the shells stop firing, the opposition knows that your troops our now coming, however, we used out communication wires to tell the people at the base where we were located so the could fire the shells away from them. The troops made it to the enemies side, just as they were crawling out of the trenches. 0 000 men fought and 10600 were killed or wounded in four hours. This was a defining moment since the Canadians did what others thought couldnt be done. It lifted our spirts for the remainder of the war, and encouraged us to go further, because we now knew we could do anything.

Next is the Persons Case. This occurred in 1. Women were not legally Persons. 5 women known as the Famous Five Henrietta Muir Edwards, Nellie McClung, Louise McKinney, Emily Murphy and Irene Parlby signed a petition directed to the Governor General. They wanted the Supreme Court to deiced if women were able to become Senators un the BNA act. They however said that Persons were able to become Senators, and Women were not persons. The word persons had a strict legal definition and had excluded women from university degrees, voting, certain jobs , and holding in public office. The five women realised that women were equal to men and they should legally able to do all things men can do. After the Famous Fivewere told they were not persons by the supreme court they went t to the Privy Council and demanded support for women. There objective had been reached. This changed the role of women forever. Women could now finish school, try new careers and they changed their looks to. Womens arms and legs were being revealed. Hair was cut short and women could now smoke in public. Thanks to the Famous Five, the role of women had always been wives and mothers, now women have the same roles as men.

Third is the battle of Dieppe. This was in August of 14. Dieppe was a french port under the control of Germans. The allies new they need to find a way into Frans and win it back from the Germans. They figured that Dieppe would be the easiest way in. The Canadian division had been selected to conduct an experimental raid at Dieppe. This attack would combine Naval, air and land operations. Canadians were enthusiastic since they had seen little action since 140. However, the raid on Dieppe was not successful. Canadians had been out of practise since they hadnt battled in a long time. They also had very little knowledge of the layout at the port. They also lacked artillery and were outnumbered by German troops. Since the raid took place on sand, the tanks all got stuck and were immobile, and many of the ships waiting for retreating troops were hit and sunk. Canadians had accounted for 46 of the 6100 troops and 07 had been killed, and 1874 were taken prisoner. Canadians fought well and brave. Even though the raid was very unsuccessful the battle was a great learning experience. It taught the Canadian troops to be more prepared, trained and informed. They took the knowledge that they had gained at Dieppe with them when they were in Normandy and had to fight at Juno Beach, and Canada had easily won the beach. The aim of Dieppe was to practise techniques for later in the war, even though they were unsuccessful, they learned many things that helped later in the war.

Finally, The Quebec Referendum. In 15, Quebec held a referendum to make the final decision on whether or not they should separate. The PQ leader Jacques Parizeau, promised a referendum on full sovereignty. Parizeau felt that Quebec could easily enter the United Nations, use the Canadian dollar, and try to get a free trade deal with Canada. Only Quebeckers could vote in the referendum and Parizeau thought for sure that his side would win, and Quebec would be separate. However, after the vote, Parizeau was shocked. The side the voted no, won by a few votes. 50.58 people voted no and 4.4 voted yes for separation. Parizeau decided that he could no longer stay in parliament, so he resigned, and Lucien Bouchard took his place. This was an important moment in Canadian history because it showed Canadas unity. This showed that Quebeckers truly feel like they are a part of Canada, and even though we dont always get long, we are a country united.

In conclusion, I feel that Canada has had many moments that defined us as a nation. Vimy Ridge, Persons Case, Dieppe and Quebec Referendum were all moments that were important in our history. These moments make up the great nation we have today.

Jefferson was a very complex individual with many ideas that upset the Federalist Party and everyone else associated with them. He can be seen as a revolutionist; he encouraged uprisings in the people to keep them involved in how they ran their own lives. But Jefferson was not willing to try to force upon people things they were not ready for. Regarding his idea of gradual emancipation that he never introduced, " that the public mind would not bear the proposition… Yet the day is not distant when it must bear and adopt it, or worse will follow." He believed the people governing themselves, not some outside force giving them orders. "Dupont loved them as infants who must be nursed, while he loved them as adults who could govern themselves." He strongly believed that power should not be granted to a central core. He believed that power manifested itself in the minds of man would be corrupt and cause tyranny.

Jefferson's vision for the new republic was spawned from his experiences in Europe. He lived and experienced the people; comparing and contrasting their form of rule to America's. Jefferson had a divine respect for the farming class of America, and when he talked about "the people" he was talking about them. Jefferson was " a pacifist in personal temperament and philosophy, a nationalist by training, and yet a Virginian with strong parochial loyalties. He wanted with all his heart to hold to the values of agrarian society, and yet he believed in progress."() His vision was to present, begin, and hope his ideals would become part of culture if they suited the people best. He realized that the people would not even know many of them in his lifetime. He wanted a place where people could be industrious; earn a living for themselves and a life. He wanted a place where people could be free to go to work and make money to buy something that would belong to them. He wanted people to have a say in government and how they lived. He wanted a democracy. A truly significant aspect of Jefferson is that he realized the world was every changing. Most of all I think Jefferson wanted America to be, " in the pursuit of happiness" (55). He wanted people to be able to change laws and manipulate government in the future to suit them best. " … the tree of liberty must be watered periodically with the blood of tyrants… that the constitution should be completely remade every 5 or 0 years."() Jefferson wanted to run the nation by the nation.

Jefferson's ideals where eventually carried through as seen in our American culture today. The freedom to vote, work, and be free were all part of his plan. But the most important ideal in my opinion is our ability to conform to the new world in which we live. Jefferson realized that future generations would need to change certain laws and government policies. Jefferson also believed in the working class of America, the class that runs the nation. He knew that we could and would build a place where our ideals would come first, where we could live our lives the way we choose.

"I'm sorry, Colin. I tried. There was nothing I could do". Marks mental breakdown as a result of to many wars and too many needless deaths, and his eventual acceptance that scars only partially heal, forms the main narrative of the novel. The parallel story of Joaquin Morales, serves to illuminate Marks story. It is through Joaquin's experience of war trauma, though, that the author is able to tie together the events of the modern wars that Mark is involved with to create the plot and theme of survival in this novel.

Just before his breakdown, Mark searches for the endless promises offered by the travel guide books, like the promise that psychiatry offers mentally ill patients. Joaquin does not offer Mark that promise because he belongs to an age 'where regrets were useless', when 'the ruthless and cunning were blessed, an age when all good things came to those quick enough to seize them.' That was how Joaquin explained it to himself. Joaquin is an opportunist. He acquires an ancestral home in Spain to use as a hospital for his psychotherapy patients and is motivated by opportunism, rather than by care. He, like Mark, has been the victim of war and has lost his entire family. The experience, rather than leaving him traumatised, like Mark, has instead made him realistic about what can be achieved. Even now, Marks case presents him an opportunity both to prove that he his methods of psychotherapy were of 'great benefit' and to be close enough to Elena to persuade her to re-establish their relationship. This opportunity plays a large role in the plot of the novel.

By listening carefully, one by one, to Mark's accounts of his war experiences, Joaquin is able to restore mark's memory of Colin's death, although, this is not the end of Marks devastating trauma. It is only at this point that his journey towards gaining self knowledge about his past and about himself, and there are times in Spain when the reader doubts if Mark can ever accept the guilt that he feels for allowing Colin to die, for not being able to save him. Joaquin also embarks are similar journey in dealing or remembering his past and duties he committed upon Carlos Perez. As the Perez mystery unravels the reader discovers that Joaquin's opportunism has another side. Like Talzani, Joaquin believes that it is better to kill a maimed human than to allow him to continue living in a personal hell. But his acts of mercy heave left him too, like Mark, with a burden of guilt. From this we can see how both two characters parallel stories interact with each other to form the plot of the novel playing a great importance.

'Triage' is a novel about survival. Mark suffers from "The guilt of the survivor", because he believes he has not done enough to save others. Joaquin points out that Mark's guilt is normal. "To feel guilt in war only shows you have a conscience, a quality to be admired". Joaquin explains how he escaped the indiscriminate killing by the Republicans early in the civil war by fleeing his home. As a survivor there was no cause for guilt and he knew that he must accept his new life or die. Mark however, cannot yet accept the notion that "the dead don't need anything from us". At the Morales institute, Joaquin treated those who "had done things beyond forgiveness", those who had been purified as a last hope for their own survival and for the survival of their communities. Through Joaquin, Anderson makes the point that each person's reactions will be different. Some like Mark will recoil from the horror of what he has experienced, while others become ruthless killers, but all must learn to survive.

Essay service for your 'Sometimes it was a terrible thing to be the one who lived.' How are the parallels between Mark and Joaquin Morales's stories important to the plot? paper

Like Mark, who has been through and experienced the extremities of war, Joaquin is able to reflect on the reasons for wars. He also knows personally and through his work that wars change people's fundamental beliefs. Joaquin himself suffers the guilt of the duties he carried out during the Spanish Civil War. He is the lone survivor of the massacre of his own family. In comparison Mark is the lone survivor of a friendship and the guilt suffered in turn by it. Joaquin and Mark's stories play a crucial role in the novels plot as the present many of the major themes evident in the novel and the basic fundamentals that complete the text.

"……There is no salvation, mark. There is no God to forgive you and there is no psychiatrist who can cure you. This is the Western idea that we can pass over our pains, how absurd! ....You carry them with you forever. That is what it means to live."

1. How and why do the Corinthians contrast Athens and Sparta?

R The Corinthians are trying to persuade the Spartans to go to war against the Athenians which are expanding their empire and harming the Sparta's allies, including Corinth and, in order to get it, they describe the characters of Athens and Sparta and they use the contrast between the cities as a way to persuade Sparta to do something it doesnt really want to do something that is out of its character. Through their speech, the Corinthians describe Sparta as a [city] which doesn't like changes and take risks they are slow and prefer to procrastinate (procrastination to power as a defense) action and just consider go to war when the enemy already has doubled its strength; just attack when attacked by the enemy with doubled strength first; don't like to take risks and hesitate in front of dangerous entrepreneurs, delaying action, fearing to lose what they have. In contrast, the Athenians are innovative, restless and always want something else. They are bold beyond their power, take risks and don't fear any danger on the contrary, they see danger as a challenge to be accomplished. They never hesitate and are continually getting more and more; they are always making plans and taking action in order to get everything they want and they always want more. Then, the Corinthians are trying to say, sooner or later they will want what you have and you have to react to stop them before it is too late. They are trying to show the Spartans that the Athenians are enemies very different from themselves and that their character makes them vulnerable in front of enemies like those, therefore they have to act out of their character otherwise they will be defeated by Athens. ["Your customs are very old-fashioned is comparison to theirs … [and] new ways necessarily prevail over old, in politics as in technology.]

Tuberculosis

Description- It's a severe bacterial infection that mainly attacks the lungs, but may also affect the kidneys, bones, lymph nodes, and brain. The disease is caused by Mycobacterium Tuberculosis. It's a rod-shaped bacterium to 4 micrometers in length. Children and people with weakened immune systems are most likely to get Tuberculosis. Half of all untreated cases are deadly. Although Tuberculosis can be treated, and can be prevented if you take certain drugs, scientists have never come close to wiping it out. The first phase of Tuberculosis usually lasts for several months. During this period, the body's immune system tries to resist this disease, and most or all of the bacteria are wiped out. However before the attack is over, some bacteria escape into the body and are carried somewhere else in the body where they are stable. Then later on in life the bacteria because active again and attacks the immune system and messes it up. When the bacteria messes up the immune system, the bacteria goes into the lung and other body parts and starts to kill the tissues.

History- This disease has existed since at least 000 BC, because they are found in mummified bodies. References to Tuberculosis can be found in writings of ancient Babylonia, Egypt, and China. The name Tuberculosis was first used in 18, and it comes from the Latin word tubercula, which means small lump, referring to the small scars seen in the tissues of infected patients. Tuberculosis returned in Europe in epidemic form. J. A. Villemin, a French army doctor, showed that Tuberculosis could be transferred from humans to animals. During the height of the epidemic in the U.S., one in every four people died from the disease. In 188 Robert Koch, a German country doctor, discovered the bacteria that caused Tuberculosis. He demonstrated the existence of the bacteria and how it was transmitted. In 14, two French men named Albert Calmette and Camille Guerin prepared the BCG vaccine that would hopefully cure the world from this disease. When they tested it on someone, they found out that it cured him so the vaccine worked. Deaths in 14 dropped from 188 per 100,000 people to about 1 per 100,000 people. People were confident that Tuberculosis was conquered.

Prevalence Between 185 and 11, the number of cases reported increased 0%. Several factors caused the increase in Tuberculosis. HIV is the greatest risk for the Tuberculosis infection to disease. People with HIV have weakened immune systems that increase their chance to get Tuberculosis. In 10, 4% of Tuberculosis cases worldwide were connected with HIV. By the year 000 the rate is expected to rise to nearly 14%. The highest increase in Tuberculosis is in Asia and Africa where the disease is spreading. The rise of Tuberculosis is also happening because people are failing to take their six to nine months medication to fight the disease. Because of this, the bacterium is becoming immune to disease so doctors have to find other medications to kill the bacteria.

Cause- Tuberculosis spreads by droplet infection. This means that when a Tuberculosis patient exhales, coughs, or sneezes, tiny droplets of fluid containing tubercle bacilli are released into the air. This Mist, as it's often called, can be taken in from the nasal passage and lungs from a person nearby. Tuberculosis however, isn't highly contagious compared with some other diseases. Only about one in three close contacts of Tuberculosis patients are likely to become infected. The disease is not passed on by contact with a patient's clothing or dishes.

Risk Factors- Sometimes patients may have to remove severely organs because of the scars that Tuberculosis causes. The risk factor is that maybe something goes wrong in the surgery. Another risk factor is that if you don't continue to take your medication, the Tuberculosis disease will be immune to the medication and you will probably die because there is nothing else that can help.

Symptoms- In the primary stage of the disease, Tuberculosis patients might be symptom free, or may experience a flu-like illness. In the secondary stage, called active disease, Tuberculosis of the lung is usually linked with a dry cough that eventually leads to a larger cough with blood coming out. There might be chest pain and shortness of breath. Patients also spit out a lot of greenish phlegm and have cold sweats at night. The secondary stage is the most contagious stage.

Incubation Period- The incubation period from the first stage of the virus to the second stage of the virus can be at any time. Usually the bacteria just stays in your body and when the immune level is low, the bacterium attacks.

Current Treatment- Antibiotic therapy can be used. Treatment for Tuberculosis involves taking several drugs for 6 to months and eating nourishing foods, having lots of rest, and follow physician orders. Rarely it may be necessary to surgically remove damaged organs. There is also a BCG vaccine, which strengthens the immune system and will kill the disease definitely. However, this vaccine is still being studied.

Long Term Affects- You may die beginning this disease if medication is not taken properly, have trouble breathing, get asthma, or have many scars on your organs that may cause internal pain and further diseases.

Explanation of Need- Research on this disease is important because the strain of Tuberculosis has come back and everyone can contract this disease. We need to find a way to kill the bacteria forever so that no one else will die. Once someone gets this disease, he can give it to a lot of other people. There is no way of knowing if someone has it in the early stages because there are no symptoms.

Symbolism

Symbolism was displayed throughout the play King Lear. Symbolism is anything that stands for or represents something beyond it. It is a direct suggestion to express ideas and emotions. The following symbols will be observed, the storm, the clothes, and the Fool.

The storm served many purposes in the play. The storm was very strong as was Lear's rage. At that point in time Lear realized that he had made mistakes and gained insight. He fell for Goneril and Regan's flattery and as a result, disowned his favourite and only truthful daughter, Cordelia. In the process he lost a worthy friend, Kent. Lear faced the storm with frustration and fury. His heart was breaking into a thousand pieces just like the sound of the thunder and lightning. Lear referred to himself as a powerless being.

" A poor, infirm, weak and despised old man." (III.ii.0)

Order essays on symbolism and other topics

Lear's inner emotions were heightened during the storm. Nature's elements such as bolts of lightning, claps of thunder, wind and rain excited Lear and set the atmosphere at that stage in the play. The words that Lear used were rough sounding much like the storm. This is known as onomatopoeia. ""Spit, fire! Spout, rain" (III, ii.14).Lear knew his decisions were unnecessary but he believed that he didn't deserve that punishment.

" I am a man more sinned against than sinning." (III, ii.5-50)

It was during the storm that we noticed signs of Lear going mad. In fact, Lear actually referred to himself as being crazy. " My wits begin to turn" ((III, ii. 67). We also noticed that Lear's character has changed. He was more concerned about others and was not as self -centred as the character we met in the beginning of the play. When Lear was outside of the hovel, he showed concern for another person, the Fool.

"Come, your hovel. Poor fool and knave, I have one part in my heart that's sorry for thee." (III, ii.71-7).

Clothing represents the status of a person. From the start of the play, Lear was portrayed as a wealthy

individual because he wore prestigious clothing. During the storm, Lear went through a process of self-realization. He was now able to understand that he hasn't paid attention to the poor when he had the power to do something. At that moment, he saw everything with clarity. He went on to tell Edgar that while clothing may make a man who he is, underneath those clothes, is a man like any other, man. Man is nothing more than a naked animal without any social status and money. Lear removed his clothing to the point where he was naked.

" Thou art the thing itself; unaccommodated man is no more but such a poor, bare forked animal, as thou art. Off, off you lendings! Come, unbutton here." (III, iv. 105-108).

Clothing can also have been seen as a way of hiding reality through appearance. For example,

Gloucester conversed with his son Edgar several times but because of his disguise as a Bedlam beggar, he was unable to recognize him. Kent also disguised himself as Caius to Lear. Again, this disguise was successful because Kent was not discovered.

A fool's role in a play is to usually entertain the audience. While the fool in King Lear served

that purpose, he was a blunt and wise individual who seemed to advise Lear. He spoke of the truth and told Lear that he made a mistake by disowning Cordelia.

The Case of the Confidential Letter

The general manager has to decide if he wants to use the competitor¡¯s information or to return it to the rival company. If I were a representative of duty ethics, I would return the confidential letter back to the competitors. It will be wrong if the manager opens the confidential letter and uses the new marketing plans for his advantage. As stated in the textbook, ¡°like it or not, we have the a duty to respect the other guy¡¯s work, just as he has a duty to respect ours.¡± In my opinion, the manager will be doing the right thing by sending it back, but also thinking of the consequences if he or she was to be caught. On the other hand, if the manager was not thinking of the consequences then he or she is doing the moral thing and should get praises.

If I were a representative of virtue ethics, I would have to ask myself ¡°do I believe that by opening this letter is immoral?¡± Virtue ethics doesn¡¯t follow a belief system or some moral codes. I¡¯m not sure if the representative would open the letter. I¡¯m pretty sure that if the manager happens to open the letter and use the information for the company¡¯s advantage then he is using some type of virtue ethics. As stated in the textbook, ¡°person cultivates the ability to resist what appears to be good in the short run for the sake of what is really good in the long run¡± the manager may feel that in the short run (chewed out by competitor) is worth taking if the long run is to be more competitive and successful by using the information. On the other hand, this also allows the manager not to use the information if he feels that the short run (more competitive and successful) is not worth it if the long run would ruin the reputation of the company if the competitor sued or something in that nature.

Comparing a Paraphrase with a Poem

Don't tell me life has no meaning,

When the soul is active, it is alive,

Things aren't always as bad or good as they seem.

Purchase your paper on "A Psalm of Life"

All duties in life should be fulfilled honestly,

You don't live to die,

You were made out of dust when you were created, you will return to that form when you die,

Though the soul does not return to the Earth as your body will.

We are not destined to have happiness or sorrow,

We need to focus on today, so that we can progress tomorrow.

Time is always passing,

Our hearts continue to beat none the less,

Every heart beat brings us closer to death.

In the struggles of life,

There are safe havens, though do not always turn to them for comfort,

Go out and change something.

Don't live for a predetermined future and don't dwell on the past,

Act and live for now, knowing God is looking down on you and knowing your still alive.

Men of the past,

Remind us we can be noble as well and make a difference for the better of the people,

Hoping another man will take the initiative to create his/her own legacy,

Prepare for anything in life, though don't forget to strive for progression and success,

But don't forget you need work and patience to achieve that.

Now that you understand what Longfellow's general idea for the poem was, try to find some obscure meanings in the word structure. When a poem is taken out of context, such as this, many points, emotion, and imagery are lapsed. For example the line "A forlorn and shipwrecked brother/ Seeing, shall take heart again." In figurative language, this provides you with an image of one man helping another at sea. Perhaps the rescuer hopes his "brother" will go on to help another. Though in context to the overall idea of the poem, the rescuer hopes the man will help others by creating a legacy.

Moreover, and perhaps the line with the greatest meaning is "leave behind us/ Footprints on the sands of time." This line can be portrayed in one of several ways. In paraphrasing, you are given only one way in which the text could be perceived. It also provides a tone of dignity and duty. This line means to make a great change that can be appreciated over time. Though it can also be analysed as once your mark is made, or footprint, everyone will know and remember you. This provides us with a separate meaning. Therefore, a poem in it's original context allows us to interpret it in many ways, in contrast to paraphrased poems.

Furthermore, in paraphrasing, Longfellow's work has lost it's full emotion and information of the speaker. In the beginning of "A Psalm of Life", it tells you that the speaker is a young man who is talking to a psalmist and that this is what is in his heart. In the original framework it also gives you a sense that the speaker is active rather than passive. The speaker may also be religious and optimistic. It also gives you an insight of the author's opinions. This is illustrated when Longfellow refers to cattle as dumb and driven. Though you would never know this since paraphrasing omits emotion, tone, interpretation, and imagery. It is created to get straight to the point, but many parts of Longfellow's work are lost.

"Revelation's" Grace and "the gestures"

Flannery O'Connor uses certain literary themes in her stories to give them a deeper theological meaning and to provide enjoyment for her readers. In "Revelation", these themes are seen when Turpid, the main character has her vision at the end of the story. O'Connor uses the theme of grace and "the gesture", which consists of contact with mystery, the "Divine", and the "return to reality".

Turpid has contact with mystery a few moments before she has her vision. At this point in the story is washing the hogs and "in the deepening light everything was taking on a mysterious hue" (). By describing the setting this way, O'Connor foreshadows the event that is about to happen to Turpid. Next, while washing the pigs, she begins starring "as if through the very heart of mystery" (). O'Connor uses this word choice to invoke the reader to think deeper about the story and to give the character more depth as a complex individual. Another reason O'Connor uses the mystery, as she states in her speech, is so the audience will forgo "any pat moral categories". By avoiding these "categories" she establishes a deeper connection to the divine. The mystery also draws the reader into the story and gives them a stronger desire to read O'Connor's story, which is what she strives for in her writing. The vision Turpid has also centers around mystery. "Mrs. Turpid remained there with her gaze bent to them as if she were absorbing some abysmal life-giving knowledge" (). This action that she commits here signifies the grace that Turpid is capable of. The reader is not entirely sure how Turpid came to have this vision because O'Connor does not ever say. Due to the fact that she does not say how it happened, the vision in itself is a "gesture" that has mystery and leaves the reader to decide what happens for themselves. The mystery that O'Connor uses in her story adds depth and also allows her to express her theme of grace and "the gesture".

Turpin has contact with the "Divine" at the end of the story and during her vision. The "Divinity" that O'Connor refers to in "Revelation" is "the Divine life and our participation in it", as she states in her speech. The first place she hints to this is when Turpid is talking to field hands. "She said as if they all knew that Mrs. Turpin was protected in some special way by Divine Providence" (0). This quote represents how the other characters in the story see Turpid yet the reader knows that she is actually very hypocritical on the inside. Also, O'Connor uses this phrasing to foreshadow the fact that about to be affected by the "Divine". Another place that hints the "Divine" is when Turpid asks "Who do you think you are?" toward God. Her answer comes back to her in an echo as if God himself answers her with her own question. The last place that O'Connor suggests "Divinity" is during Turpid's vision. "She saw the streak as a vast swinging bridge extending upward from the earth through a field of living fire. Upon it a vast horde of souls were rumbling toward heaven" (). This quote represents another "Divine" characteristic where God is showing Turpid what will happen later in her life. This also proves that she is capable of grace because she is able to see this vision which is a "gesture". By incorporating "Divinely" and Godly events in her stories, O'Connor is able to bring across her theme of grace and "the gesture" to her readers.

Cheap writing services for Flannery O'Connors "Revelation" dealing with Grace and "the gestures" papers

Turpin "returns to reality" after she has her vision. O'Connor states in her speech that "reality is something to which we must be returned at considerable cost". Before Turpid has her vision she is hit in the head with book and she first starts to question why she was targeted for this cruel act. She does not completely realize why till after her vision. "She raised her hands from the side of the pen in a gesture hieratic and profound" (). Turpid does this action at the start of the vision and again shows that she is capable of grace. "…even their virtues were being burned away…fixed unblinkingly on what lay ahead…but she heard she heard were the voices of the souls climbing upward into the starry field and shouting hallelujah" (4). At this point Turpid is completely "returned to reality" and finally sees her own faults and realizes why God allowed her to be the target of the attack. This quote also shows the point where she makes her greatest "gesture" and proves that she has grace. O'Connor relates to her audience here that no matter how hypocritical or ungodly a person may be, given the right chance they can see the error of their ways. O'Connor's uses certain events in her stories to point out "reality" to her characters show the reader that they are capable of grace and "the gesture".

Through her main character in "Revelation" O'Connor relates the theme of grace and "the gesture" to her readers. This theme is made of mystery that adds depth to the story, "Divine" events that had an affect on the main character, and also consists of the character "returning to reality". This theme completes the story in a way that interests the reader and provides a deeper view into

Art is Everything

Art and design make up a huge part of our culture. Every day thousands of commercials are aired, thousands of billboards are viewed, and millions of people are affected by some form of art. Art is everything. Whether it is a painting to or cartoon, Americans are constantly faced with art.

Coming out of college with a Bachelor's of Fine Arts and a major in graphic design, will give me a wide range of opportunities for jobs. This major covers studio art classes, like drawing and painting, and also includes many advanced computer courses that relate to design. With these computer courses, I will become familiar with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Maya. Knowledge of these programs is required for all graphic design and animation careers (hotjobs.com).

This major focuses on communication of ideas visually through the use of images and typography. By majoring in graphic design, I will most likely find a career with a large commercial firm. I would like to create advertisements for products along with their logos and promotional displays. I would be required to promote a certain product or company through the use of words, images, and brochures. I would need knowledge of product management and communication skills (hotjobs.com).

I want to work in a large city where there are more opportunities to work with larger companies. These larger companies would give me more opportunities to work with various medias, concepts, and ideas. Larger Advertising and Graphic Design firms would have a wide variety of companies to work with. These companies can range from retail to business firms.

Even though being a graphic designer would be the prime career for me, I have also considered looking into animation and illustration. This career would still primarily be based on computer graphics, but instead of communicating ideas, I as the illustrator would have to create characters to represent a certain personality. This career would also be required to have knowledge of Maya, Illustrator, and Photoshop. According to Professor Anderson, Maya is a computer program that is used by large firms today to create animations such as "Finding Nemo" and "Monster's Inc." (Anderson).

With this career, I would have a wider range of jobs that I would be given, depending on the illustration or animation. With an animation career, I would be able to work from home. This career is very flexible, and work times would vary. Working in a large city would also have its benefits here, but working through a computer in my home would be a solution.

These two careers earn from $70,000 to $5,000 a year. The salaries can differ depending on the size of the company and the demand for their products or demand for the illustration. Salaries also differ depending on the amount of experience the designer has. These careers are also based on the number of projects done. There is a higher demand for graphic designers because graphic designs covers so many areas. Companies thrive off of commercials and advertisements to promote their companies and their products.

While these two careers are different, they also can go hand in hand. With a major in graphic design, I will become familiar with computer programs that are not only used in advertising, but also in animating. I will learn how to use visuals to express what I am trying to say, and this concept goes both with design and animation.

My father's friend, Sean Klee, has a major in Graphic Design along with a minor in animation. He works with a company in Chicago that deals with the Fortune 500 businesses. Fortune 500 businesses are the top 500 businesses in profit in the nation. This company also deals with short film animation and commercials. He works with both areas, receiving a higher salary. He does have to work more hours, but he loves his job. He attended Indiana University and went to the Art Institute of Chicago for a master's in studio art. He told me that this choice in receiving his Masters was a choice that helped him get to the top of the ladder in the company's employees. With his wide range of knowledge, not only in computers, but also in the studio, he is able to create designs that involve all of these mediums and skill (Klee).

One option that I did think of was becoming a graphic designer and doing animation and illustration on the side, somewhat like Sean Klee. This would give me some flexibility with where I could live. I have also considered receiving my Master's in studio art because I have learned that this further education can give me a boost in salary and skill.

The only problem with graphic designers is that it is a very demanding career. Large cities are a must with a close living place for easy transportation to and from work. It requires much communication skills with other companies and clients. Travel could be involved, along with major deadlines. People skills are needed everyday. Knowing a language can become a plus, also. Many companies work nation and world wide.

Even though the advantages and disadvantages in both of these careers seem to be even, I am still leaning toward graphic design. Graphic Design has been an interest I have had for a long time. I love to visually express my ideas and work with people to solve the problems. I enjoy working with computers and studio art because I feel as though it is more of a love than a career. They always say to do what you love and love what you do. That is my goal in life.

Since there never was a spurned lover stirring up in Salem Village, and there is no evidence from the time that Tituba practiced Caribbean black magic, yet these trials and executions actually still took place, how can you explain why they occurred?

A major cause of Salem witchcraft trials was superstition, an irrational...resulting from ignorance or fear of the unknown. A lack of scientific reasoning led many people to believe that, for instance, walking under a ladder would bring seven years of bad luck. When the girls had fits of hysteria-seizures, trance like states, and sacrilegious screaming Parris called upon his colleagues to exorcise the demons that possed the girls.

Many historians today believe that relion was not the catalyst of the Salem Witchcraft Trials. They cite a series of quarrels among townspeople as the cause of the string of accusations that sent more than 00 people to jail.

Three hundred years later, it still frightens people to think that the testimones of insane girls were used to send people to the gallows. It seems impossible that fallacies could be responsible for the death of 5 people in the Salemand ten thousands elsewhere. While there were several other witchcraft trials in New England, and thousand on other continents, none have captured our morbid fear of the supernatural, as did the Salem Witchcraft Trials. It is amazing today to think of a time where people actually believed in absurd folklord such as witches flying and possessing their victims. As George Kittredge said, Our forefathers believed in witchcraft, not because they were Puritains, not because they were Colonialist, not because they were New Englanders- but because they were men of their time.

John D Rockefeller began as a humble oil business book-keeper in Cleveland, Ohio and in just seven years rose to control a tenth of the entire US oil business. Rockefeller was the guiding force behind the creation and development of the Standard Oil Company, which grew to dominate the oil industry and became one of the first big trusts in the United States, thus engendering much controversy and opposition regarding its business practices and form of organization. However these business practices even though they were unethical the result was what were needed in order for the American economy to be what it is now. Without people like Rockefeller we wouldn't be where we are now. He did what had to be done in order to improve the economic society. When Rockefeller was growing up he was imbedded with this mentality in his head of cheating people. His dad was already training him to become "dirty". He started teaching him his methods of business and the tricks of trade to being a successful business man. As he was growing he had a dream and he was willing to do anything to accomplish this dream. His drive to succeed was what lead him to be the notorious person he was known to be. As he grew he decided to stay away from having much of a social life because he knew it may lead to interruption of his work.

Rockefeller and his partners successfully created and applied a system for operating a large integrated enterprise which was one of the starts of the early big businesses. The main players of this business were Flagler Rockefeller and Dodd .His choice of partners was a very decisive move because each one had a certain characteristic that fit the business that Rockefeller was trying to run. There Oil Company was now considered a monopoly which is when one business rules over a certain industry. The Supreme Court deemed this to be a terrible thing they forced to Oil Company to split up into different branches. He would secretly buy up or create new oil related companies such as engineering and pipeline firms. These seemed to be independent operators. Rockefeller and his close colleagues secretly controlled the firms and gave Standard Oil, Rockefeller's main oil company, hidden rebates. This company became a monopoly by Rockefeller eliminating competition this was done because he had strategies which he acquired from his father. In order to demolish his competition he would do such things as buy them out or attempt to bargain for items and buy them for a cheap amount. They would also do things such as buying the strongest men which allow them to work faster they would get these men at any extent even if it meant getting them from there competitor. They also did things such as watch the competitor's shipments and they would be in co-operation with the railroad men in order to do this. These steps taken by Rockefeller led to our economic success as a country even though his ways may have been unorthodox however without his practices big businesses such as Microsoft would not exist today. This was also needed at the time because it was survival of the fittest and he needed to do what he had to do in order to survive.

An Interpretation of Robert Frost's

"Nothing Gold Can Stay"

This poem by Robert Frost, like so many of his other works, uses nature as its subject. It makes good use of many literary elements like alliteration, paradox, metaphor, overstatement, and a couplet rhyme scheme. Though it is only a short, eight-line lyric poem, it carries a deep meaning. Frost describes the "subsiding" of nature's beauty, but through deeper analysis we find that the poem encourages us to enjoy all things "gold," and look ahead to the coming of brighter and fuller life.

The poem begins with a literary paradox in line one, and it's meaning can be made clear through both literal and metaphorical interpretation. "Nature's first green is gold," in a more literal sense because the pale green leaves and buds of early spring are actually a gold color, as in that of the birch tree that Frost so admired (Ferguson). In terms of the metaphor the beauty of nature's first growth is golden and precious because it lasts only a short time, and because it is as line two describes with great alliteration, "Her hardest hue to hold (Meyers)." Though this line is rather clear in that it refers to the inevitable coming of summer, the ambiguity of line one will become clearer, as the unity principle is applied with the rest of the poem.

Line three, again, involves comparison through the use of paradox and metaphor. "Her early leaf's a flower," compares the beauty in the budding leaf of early spring to that of the recognizable beauty of a flower. Line four, using a bit of overstatement, then tells that this beauty can last, "But only so an hour," as the leaf will soon unfold leaving its precious golden color behind. "Then leaf subsides to leaf," in line five. What Frost means here is that as summer comes the early flowerlike leaf "subsides" into its true leaf form, and into comparative green dullness (Bagby). Next, line six continues the extended metaphor except this time it relates the fall of mankind in Eden to the fall of nature's most beautiful "hour." "So Eden sank to grief," in the same way that gold faded to green, and flower subsided to leaf (Ferguson).

Now as Frost reveals the final couplet we can begin to pull things together to find the poem's meaning as a whole and the message behind it. "So dawn goes down to day," is added as the last extension of the metaphor. The beauty of early spring, the purity of Eden, and the morning sunrise are all golden. They are innocent and pure, not yet tainted by leafy dullness, by man's sin, or by the ever long day to come. They are unique, precious, and limited in their duration. This is where the eighth line comes in telling us that, "Nothing gold can stay," and confirming that these golden moments will soon pass. Frost repeats the title in the last line to emphasize how temporary these moments are, and to encourage us to cherish all that is golden (Marcus).

Still we must consider Frost's specific choice in his metaphors, especially the final one. Each moment seems to be at its peak or in its "Golden Age" before there is a "subsiding" of some sort, a loss of beauty with the passing of time. For some reason though, Frost phrases them all in paradox. A leaf bud subsidies into full bloom and the flourishing of life; Eden sank to grief while humanity is saved by the messiah; dawn goes down as the sun rises into a full day of brightness and life. Frost uses the paradox to show that what might seem as a subsiding of sorts, in text and in life, may still yet lead to fuller and brighter life.

His message in this poem is to enjoy the "gold" in life, and the purity in those moments before they are inevitably overcome by time, but to also realize that the fall from theses golden times does not always mean a turn for the worse. After the "subsiding" of spring we can look to the fuller life of summer. After the passing of dawn we can look to the fuller light of day, and in keeping the unity, after the sinking of Eden we can look to the fuller life of humanity to come. The beauty of these transitory things lies mostly in that they are so temporary, and can last for only so long. Yet their passing does not mean ultimate loss because, though not as beautiful, there are equally important gains to come. While looking ahead as these pure and peaceful moments pass, enjoy all that is "gold" as it comes, because such moments are like what Frost would later give as his definition of poetry, "a momentary stay against confusion (Pritchard)."

Deal to End Arsenic Use in Lumber

Arsenic –laced wood is a widely used type of lumber used to build wooden decks and playgrounds. Starting at the end of 2003, this wood will be phased out of production. Arsenic, along with other chemicals, is broadly used as an additive in pressure-treated lumber by do-it-yourselfers to assemble decks, fences, and playgrounds. Only, the accepted wood has come under fire recently among reports that arsenic from the wood can transfer from the wood to children's hands as they play on playgrounds and decks. Investigations also showed that arsenic spreads from the contaminated wood to surrounding soil.

Now, since wood treaters are facing lawsuits, made a deal with the Environmental Protection Agency to phase out chromated copper arsenate (CCA) in outdoor consumer products, which is an arsenic-laced preservative. Currently the EPA is analyzing CCA because it also is known to rub off pressure treated woods. The EPA will continue their evaluation on consumer health risks involved with CCA. Only, as of now, the EPA has not concluded that CCA treated lumber is harmless to consumers.

To fully understand this article, one may need to know chemicals and how they react with humans. These events occurring involving the lumber could affect my community because many places around my area are built of wood, and if they are arsenic, they could harm the people near the area. Personally, I think people are making a bigger deal out of this than it actually is, but also I don't know how arsenic wood or the chemicals from the wood affects the body.
