1. How and why do the Corinthians contrast Athens and Sparta?

R The Corinthians are trying to persuade the Spartans to go to war against the Athenians which are expanding their empire and harming the Sparta's allies, including Corinth and, in order to get it, they describe the characters of Athens and Sparta and they use the contrast between the cities as a way to persuade Sparta to do something it doesnt really want to do something that is out of its character. Through their speech, the Corinthians describe Sparta as a [city] which doesn't like changes and take risks they are slow and prefer to procrastinate (procrastination to power as a defense) action and just consider go to war when the enemy already has doubled its strength; just attack when attacked by the enemy with doubled strength first; don't like to take risks and hesitate in front of dangerous entrepreneurs, delaying action, fearing to lose what they have. In contrast, the Athenians are innovative, restless and always want something else. They are bold beyond their power, take risks and don't fear any danger on the contrary, they see danger as a challenge to be accomplished. They never hesitate and are continually getting more and more; they are always making plans and taking action in order to get everything they want and they always want more. Then, the Corinthians are trying to say, sooner or later they will want what you have and you have to react to stop them before it is too late. They are trying to show the Spartans that the Athenians are enemies very different from themselves and that their character makes them vulnerable in front of enemies like those, therefore they have to act out of their character otherwise they will be defeated by Athens.
