The Case of the Confidential Letter

The general manager has to decide if he wants to use the competitor¡¯s information or to return it to the rival company. If I were a representative of duty ethics, I would return the confidential letter back to the competitors. It will be wrong if the manager opens the confidential letter and uses the new marketing plans for his advantage. As stated in the textbook, ¡°like it or not, we have the a duty to respect the other guy¡¯s work, just as he has a duty to respect ours.¡± In my opinion, the manager will be doing the right thing by sending it back, but also thinking of the consequences if he or she was to be caught. On the other hand, if the manager was not thinking of the consequences then he or she is doing the moral thing and should get praises.

On the other hand, this also allows the manager not to use the information if he feels that the short run (more competitive and successful) is not worth it if the long run would ruin the reputation of the company if the competitor sued or something in that nature.
