Beach Daze

Have you ever noticed that the most relaxing sounds are water flowing, especially sounds of the sea? I notice that looking at a picture of the ocean brightens my day. Every year my family and I go to Daytona Beach, Florida, for our summer vacation. There was one vacation that I will never forget. It was the first vacation that I had my driver's license; I was able to experience new, better, and more exciting things.

Not only did I get to experience all the things about the beach that keep me wanting to go back, but I also got to do them alone. Some days I would even drive a mile or two down the beach just to hear all the sounds I love. With a brother 1 years younger than I am, I do not usually get to hear everything I want. Waves crashing on the sandy shore are much more relaxing when a five-year-old child is not screaming in my ear!

Every year before then, my parents would drive me down to the boardwalk and drop me off. This was not so bad, except that there was always a time limit. On the days it was boring, I could not just leave, and on the days I was having fun, it was always time to meet my parents. Now I had my own time limit to do anything I wanted swim, shop, talk, eat, or whatever. I owe all of this to one little laminated piece of paper my license!

There was one specific event that happened that week that will forever stick in my mind. This event would never have happened without my license. I was able to go to the local tattoo parlor, along with the company of my 15-year-old sister, to pierce my tongue! Had my parents been involved, this full expression of myself would never have happened. It was somewhat exciting, knowing I did something on my own. I tried to hide the piercing from my parents at first; however, since I have that little voice in my head called a conscience, I had to tell them. Suprisingly, I had nothing to worry about because they liked it.

Although this was just another family vacation, it was mine. The vacation was mine in the sense that I got to do things I wanted, while still enjoying things I have done all those years before. Vacation is now a totally different concept to me because I know I have control to make it as good as I want it to be.

"Bertrande's decision to expose Arnaud as an impostor was both selfish and foolish"

Throughout the Novel "The Wife of Martin Guerre" by Janet Lewis, the decision made by Bertrande to expose Arnaud as Martin's impostor was neither selfish nor foolish on her behalf, as it was understandable in the context of the novel's time and culture. As Bertrande becomes more aware that the returned Martin is an impostor she, in turn, becomes distanced from Martin's sisters, the priest and the townsfolk as she is determined to expose the awful truth. Those around her see this decision as very foolish and feel it carries a sense of betrayal. Although the impostor's return has created security and prosperity, Bertrande feels that she has no option other than to expose Arnaud so she can maintain a personal sense of justice and morality. Whilst this can be seen as foolish and selfish, it is also common sense and moral a decision.

Bertrande was a very loyal and hard working housewife within this patriarchal household. Even after Martin so cruelly abandoned his wife and child, Bertrande remained strong, maintaining the care of their son and helping run the domestic life of the Guerre household herself. Throughout the 8 long solitary years she held her life and her son Sanxi's, together. When Martin imposts, Bertrande is aware and is uncertain if Martin is genuine "He was a stockier figure, broader in the shoulders, developed, mature..." This first realisation is reinforced when Martin begs for Bertrande's forgiveness and promises that he will never again leave her. He real martin would not have made such a promise.

School papers on "Bertrandes's decision to expose Arnaud as an imposter was both selfish and foolish"

After the birth of her first son Bertrande felt a strong sense of guilt, believing she has committed the sin of adultery. In this very religious period it was outrageous and very wrong to give birth to an illegitimate baby. This is summed up in the quote "It was like the shadow of a dark wing sweeping suddenly across the room, and then departing as swiftly as it had come."(p7). This demonstrates Bertrandes Knowledge of how bad the heinous act of adultery was, and how her guilt is now paramount and has brought her to face the facts of this sham marriage. Bertrande now needed to expose Arnaud as Martin's impostor. This now means that Arnaud could be tried for Rape, Plagiarism, deceit, misrepresentation and theft among others. She was determined to have Arnaud convicted so she could live within the moral boundaries of this society, and gain her own "solitary justice". Bertrande approached the Priest during confessional and the priest didn't give a second thought to this powerful allegation and ignored her for the fact that she was a woman. The women of 16th century Europe had a very hard times gaining recognition for themselves as their opinions were ignored and regarded as inferior, compared to males in their unjust culture. It was only when Bertrande gained the support of Pierre Guerre that people took notice of what Bertrande was saying as it now had credibility.

Arnaud was tried in a court and was given the death sentence by decapitation for the heinous acts and crimes he had committed in the village of Artigues. Bertrande testified against her supposed husband and her opinion ended up carrying the most weight. Ironically it carried none before the support of Pierre Guerre. Yet Bertrande was shattered upon hearing the verdict and cried out "Not death! No, no, I have not demanded his death!"(p6). Bertrande never anticipated the death sentence, as she had only wanted a vindication of the truth, She asked for public penance, to pay a fine to the King and pay ten thousand livres to herself. But the strict social structure of the time called for a harsher treatment and he had to be severely punished.

The decision made by Bertrande to carry on with the case against Arnaud when it proceeds to Toulouse was selfish in some people's eyes, but it was mainly fuelled by self interest and justification. Bertrande was aware of the fact that she had sinned and this could be seen as her motion to set things straight. Close friends and family were delighted to have Martin back and they saw Bertrande as foolish for taking a stand against this man who was a good Cap d' hostel, husband and father. Bertrande needed to ease her conscience as she had sinned; this trial of Arnaud was Bertrand's vindication for closure and for her own solitary justice.

Bertrande is now "at last free, in her solitary justice, of both passions and of men." She now feels calmed of the guilt of unconsciously bearing an illegitimate child and having a sexual relationship with a man outside marriage. Therefore taking Arnaud to court at Rieux was a justified action in her eyes, even though those people around her saw the decision as foolish and selfish. Martins harsh judgement of Bertrande was ironic as he accused Bertrande of being immoral in her actions, even though she did they right thing by those around her who were supportive of Martins impostor, if anyone could have been more immoral it would have been Martin Guerre for disobeying his father and waiting eight long years to return home.

Bertrande was let down and dealt a harsh blow by the unjust and stern social system on which Artigues culture was built upon. To say "Bertrande's decision to expose Arnaud as an impostor was both selfish and foolish" is not correct as Bertrande could have never lived with an impostor in the strict moral confines of 16th century society. Bertrande was let down and dealt a harsh blow by the harsh, unjust and stern social system on which Artigues culture was built upon.

Tuberculosis, which can target any body part, results in the death of nearly two million people every year. TB is an infectious disease that is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis usually found in the droplets of an active TB patient (1). According to historical studies, TB was known to the ancient Egyptians, in fact, the analysis of the spinal column of the mummies from 400 BC shows a definite pathological signs of TB decay. Thousands of years later, A. Waksman discovered the power of fungi in decreasing the Mycobacterium tuberculosis growth, and was able to isolate actinomycin that was too poisonous for use in both humans and animals. His second discovery, streptomycin, showed a more noticeable success; the bacteria vanished from the patient's sputum and he made a quick recovery (). By 00 the incidence of TB disease will rise to 100 million new cases and will account for 6 million deaths a year. Nowadays, one person gets infected every second (1). Transmission, symptoms, and treatment are the three criteria by which tuberculosis, an infectious disease, can be described.

Although droplet transmission is the most common way to transmit TB, direct contact and infection via intestines are unusual ways to transmit this disease. TB is usually contracted by spreading through the tiny droplets that may spray into the air when an individual carrying the bacteria sneezes or coughs (4). Having direct exposure to bacteriogenic materials is another way to contract TB; therefore, workers, who are in close contact with these materials, are at most risk to develop TB this way, for example dissecting assistants, doctors, ranchers, and butchers. Finally, a person can get TB by eating contaminated animal products such as raw milk or undercooked meat from an infected animal ().

Symptoms vary according to the infected organ. The commonest site of tuberculosis disease is the lungs, but it can spread to other organs specifically joints, bones, central nervous system, and urinary. Several symptoms are associated with pulmonary TB, including cough, fatigue, slight fever, and pain when breathing or coughing, while extrapulmonary TB symptoms may be back pain if the spine is affected, or blood in the urine of a patient with TB of the kidney (1).

The treatment regimen includes at least three or preferably four specific antibiotics that can be changed if the causative agent develops drug resistance. The initial regimen for treating TB should include four drugs isoniazid, rifampin, pyrazinamide, and ethambutol; however if the bacteria becomes drug resistant then streptomycin is used instead of ethambutol (1, ). Occasionally, the drugs may cause serious side effects. Possible side effects of rifampin, which are similar to symptoms of flu, include fever, chills, muscle pain, nausea, and vomiting; while those of ethambutol are kidney and vision related (1).

In conclusion, tuberculosis is an infectious disease that can be described according to its transmission, symptoms, and treatments. It can be transmitted in various ways such as droplet, direct contact, and infection via intestines. Since pulmonary TB is the most common form of this disease, symptoms related to the lungs often appears as the disease progresses. Finally, certain antibiotics are prescribed for the treatment of TB that may differ if the patient contracted TB for the second time. Therefore, understanding TB in order to decreasing the mortality caused by it are the purposes of this essay.

Do you remember the board game, Life? In the beginning you were given the option of attending college or finding a job straight out of high school. If you chose to go right into the working world, you were only allowed to select from a small pool of job cards BUT you would not have to pay back any student loans. However, if you chose to go to college you would get to select a job from a larger number of job cards, but you would be hindered afterwards by the necessity to pay off your college loans. The advantage was that you had a higher chance of getting the job you wanted if you went to college. At the time Life was created, this concept made plenty of sense but in today's society this is not the case. Recent grads are now faced with many more obstacles.

Gone are the days when a college degree alone opens the magic doors of employment. In today's economy finding a job requires much……much more. When I entered college I believed I was assured a job once I graduated and at the time it seemed logical. The economy was booming and jobs were handed out like candy. Now it has all changed. Many college grads today hit the market unprepared to do what is necessary to land that coveted job offer. We are required to take classes on what to do at our job, but none on how to actually get it. From my experience, there should be an entire course series dedicated to the fine art of networking.

No longer can you just open up the local paper…find an ad….apply and immediately be asked to an interview. Entry-level jobs just aren't advertised the same way anymore. The old saying "its not what you know, but who you know" has been brought to a whole new level. In today's day and age students who are involved in extra curricular activities, participate in internships, and show leadership in edition to spectacular grades are STILL not guaranteed a good job. Therefore, Word needs to be spread that job hunting requires not just the pretty piece of paper your university gives you at the end of four years but also hard work, perseverance, and determination but most of all networking skills.

Machiavellis representation of truth in The Prince is rooted in a cynical view of political and personal power. He uses the tactics of confusion and misrepresentation to advance his concept of the ideal state. Machiavelli combined the traditional, or classical, and Christian thought that was prevalent in philosophical circles of his day for the purposes of presenting his concept of power. This 5 page paper examines the concept of power, truth and imagination from Machiavellis viewpoint in The Prince.

and relates this notion of morality within the constructs of leadership. This paper considers the fact that Machiavelli appears to support the notion that the means always justify the ends in political situations, and that understanding this is the premise of strong leadership

Machiavelli creates principles to which a Princedom should be run which will enable the Prince to be strong in this reign that rival those of the THE ART OF WAR. He covers the state in which a Prince reigns such as that of acquiring new territory and the characteristics of which a Prince should follow if the Prince wishes to remain in power. Machiavelli also outlines the type of arms a Prince should inquire in defending his citizens or in attack of another ruler. Machiavelli covers Italys current political position of when he was living their and how its faults happened how it can be remedied. Under all his points he leaves the message, that no matter how you came into power, use it wisely and good fortune will be bestoed on you or that the ends justify the means.

I recommend that anyone who wishes to get into the mind of a political and military master mind or just someone looking for a thought provocing book should read this because it is not to be taken lightly. Although he is writing of political positions in the 1500s most of the points he makes can still be useful today however not all because of the invention of chemical and nuclear warfare and internet which has opened the world into a new dimension.

As a high school student I remember many of my instructors referring to Machiavelli as the author of the famous book on backstabbing for power. After having finally read the Prince, I really wonder where this reputation comes from. Machiavelli makes it clear from the first page that hes writing a guide for taking and maintaining power without any moral considerations getting in the way, but his arguments outline a benevolent authority, not a tyrannical one. In the Discourses (also included in this book), he extols the virtues of the people over the prince.

The Prince and the Discourses both have interesting gems for the modern reader. Machiavelli uses many examples of powerful people and institutions from his time. He expresses almost an atheistic position when discussing religion, and, furthermore, he describes a general disillusionment with religion by the people of Italy. I found all these subtle things quite intriguing and not at all what I would have expected.

Machiavelli writes in a very easy to read style (is this just the translation?) and he presents logical arguments and historical examples to back everything up, but his arguments generally boil down to because I say so. I suspect if a modern writer (particularly an academic) wrote this same book, it would be five times longer, with detailed justification for each point made.

When making the decision to return to college was a hard one. Some of the reasons for this are that it was going to be a financial strain. Working a full or part time job would be out of the question due to time restrains. Second it was going to be hard, because I was pregnant with our first child. And third was finding the money to go back to college.

Going to college takes lots of money. Not only for books and tuition. But also for living expenses, car expenses, and supplies. In my case if I were going to take traditional classes at a university I would have long-distance travel and babysitter expenses. The closest 4-year university to me is 60 miles away one direction. This would not leave much time to work even part-time. When deciding to get my degree I had to look at all these financial factors. Also my husband said in order for me to get a second degree I would have to pay for tuition and books with a Pell Grant and scholarships without using a student loan. I could go back to college for a second degree.

Two weeks before my first semester started I found out that I was pregnant. I had been pregnant before but they had ended in miscarriages. This time the doctor put me on pills that helped me stay pregnant. So it was an intense time when classes started. Not only because of classes starting but I was also worried about staying pregnant. While everything turned out to be okay and I had a problem free pregnant. Which helped in dealing with my first semester back to school.

The biggest challenge was finding enough money to go back. The first semester was hard. Because all the scholarships that I find were for students straight out of high school or in a degree plan that I was not working for. I ended up having enough money from a Pell Grant and a Non Traditional Student scholarship.

Romeo and Juliet

There is only one person who is truly responsible for the deaths of Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet. After looking at all the evidence provided, I believe that the Friar is that person. Although many would say Romeo or Juliet are more responsible the he, one must look at all the events leading up to their deaths.

One major reason that the Friar is the person to blame is the fact that he married the two without their parents consent. This act was clearly a "problem to the human heart in conflict with itself," because he had respect his own feelings while considering what was truly right. He obviously went with his own feelings. If the parents had known the two had been married there would have only been minor conflict rather then the irreversible outcome of death.

Another major contributing factor to the death of the two teenagers that the Friar provided was when he gave Juliet the sleeping potion. Giving her that very potion led to Romeo's thinking that she was dead. As a result Romeo killed himself, and when Juliet awakened she saw her beloved lying there motionless. Seeing Romeo dead is what made Juliet take her own life. The sleeping potion could perhaps be the most prominent reason for their deaths.

The last reason can and will not go unnoticed. This reason truly shows how the Friar could have done something to prevent Romeo and Juliet from dieing. That reason is he knew everything before, that Romeo had not received the message and that Juliet wasn't dead, but he still did not do anything. As a result to his unwillingness to do something about the message Romeo thought his bride was dead and killed himself.

The evidence clearly shows that the Friar is the real person to blame for the deaths of Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet. Whether it 's marrying them without their parent's consent, giving Juliet the sleeping potion, or not doing anything about Romeo's unawareness about Juliet's death, the Friar is the only person responsible for the teenager's deaths. After seeing all the information shown, it is clear that there is no other person to blame.

momThe landscape of the Eastern Conference has been shaken up in recent weeks. Atlanta has obtained Glenn "Big Dog" Robinson, Boston added Vin Baker and Shammond Williams, Cleveland added young stud Darius Miles, Detroit added Chauncey Billups, Milwaukee added Toni Kukoc, New Orleans signed star point guard Baron Davis to a contract extension, New York obtained Antonio McDyess, Orlando added Pat Garrity and Jacque Vaughn, Washington added Larry Hughes, and today the New Jersey Nets acquired All-Star center Dikembe Mutombo.

Whew! Just reading through these transactions is enough to make my head spin – and this list doesn't even include players from the NBA draft this summer. Isn't the Western Conference supposed to be the big boys of the NBA? This summer GM's from numerous Eastern Conference teams have made bold moves in attempts to bolster their clubs chances at winning an elusive NBA championship.

Late Tuesday afternoon Rod Thorn and the Nets pulled a gutsy move in the acquisition of Mutombo. Starting point guard Jason Kidd has been begging for a dominant big man for months and now he has an All-Star center in Mutombo.

"In bringing Dikembe to New Jersey, we have added a perennial All-Star to our roster," said Thorn. "He is a four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year who is one of the leading rebounders and shot blockers in the NBA. Dikembe's presence in the middle will strengthen our interior defense and his attributes fit in well with our overall style of play."

The big question is how does Mutombo fit with the Nets uptempo game? The problem Nets fans will discover is that Mutombo doesn't. Mutombo is an aging relic who didn't mesh with Allen Iverson this past season which is why the Sixers unloaded Mutombo. Just as Hakeem Olajuwon struggled with the Raptors this past season, so will Mutombo with the young upstart Nets next year. Jason Kidd has longed for a dominant big men and the Nets will keep him waiting like a jilted groomsman at the alter on his wedding day.

Mutombo is an 11-year NBA veteran who started to show signs of his age in the playoffs and during the later stages of the season. Mutombo has career marks of 12.3 points, 12.3 rebounds and 3.4 blocks in 840 games. Last year Mutombo averaged 11.5 points, 10.8 rebounds and 2.4 blocks while earning All-NBA Third Team and NBA All-Defensive second team honors.

These are decent stats and nothing to sneeze at, however, anyone who watched Mutombo and the Sixers struggle in the first round of the playoffs realize that last years version of Mutombo is a shell of the player that helped the Sixers to the NBA Finals the previous year. Mutombo's stats from last years playoffs are similar to that of this regular season stats – 8.8 points per game and 10.6 boards – are down slightly from his season long averages. However it was the way that the Sixers offense lagged while he was on the court and were unable to keep up with Boston.

The Nets have a young team built around Kidd, Kenyon Martin and Richard Jefferson. These players made the Nets successful last season due to their run and gun style, a game in which Mutombo showed no signs of being interested in last season with the Sixers. Mutombo prefers a slowed down offense in which the point guard brings the ball up court and dumps the ball down into the post to the teams big man.

On paper the acquisition of a former All-Star and defensive player of the year looks like another stroke of genius by Rod Thorn. However this is more than likely a bad science experiment that is sure to blow up in Thorn's face.

Sylvia Plath

(Sample paper) Write a personal response to the poetry of Sylvia Plath.

Support the points you make by reference to the poetry of Plath you have studied.

Sylvia Plath was a bright, intelligent and determined young woman with a burning desire to write. She wrote incessantly during her short life poetry, short stories, essays, articles. She was an outstanding student but often experienced self-doubt and depression and her work clearly reflects a wide range of emotions. She always sought perfection, often writing, and rewriting, her poetry until she was completely satisfied. She almost created a language for herself and this, combined with her startling images, make her poems truly unique. Her last poems are generally seen as her outstanding achievement. Here she appears to have truly found her voice expressing herself in a distinctive, unique style. She was even aware of this while writing them as she wrote to her mother that "I am a writer… I am a genius of a writer".

College papers on Sylvia Plath- a personal response

Plath was relentless in her work and much of her poetry reveals her struggle against herself and the world. Her poetry therefore touches on many themes and issues which clearly conveys her flexibility as an artist. During the early part of her marriage, she wrote the philosophical "Black Rook in Rainy Weather" One theme associated with the poem is the poet's identity as a writer. The poem depicts her quest for poetic inspiration and vision. She is surrounded by a dull landscape ".." and longs for something miraculous to transform the ordinary into the wonderful. She fears emotional exhaustion ".." and is resigned to the fact that inspiration involves a long wait.

She frequently returned to the idea of double identity in her poetry her interest in what appears on the surface and what is hidden is reflected in "Mirror". Here something frightening and almost sinister is hidden deep within herself "..", something that she would prefer to avoid but cannot escape. This preoccupation is also at the heart of "The Arrival of the Bee Box" The box appears like a simple container "..", it appears to hide no mysteries but it also conceals something fascinating, sinister and threatening "..".

Plath also had an abiding interest in the world around her. Her interest in nature is reflected in many of her poems. One is acutely aware of her ability to vividly describe the scene before her. "Finisterre", based on a memory of a holiday in France, allows us to visualise the rugged cliffs ".." listen to the relentless pounding of the sea "..", picture the delicacy of the flowers and the bleakness of the rocks below. She even allows us to feel the suffocating effect of the mists "..".

"Black Rook in Rainy Weather" represents ordinary nature as it orders itself "..". The poem is strong in visual details, vividly portraying a scene on a wet, miserable, wintry day. "The Pheasant" stands for innocent and beautiful nature "..". Her brilliant style creates graphic images the pheasant itself, the hill and the elm in the background and even in an earlier scene one can visualise the "crosshatch" footprints of various birds in the snow. "The Pheasant" also clearly conveys Plath's stance against the destruction of nature. "Poppies in July" captures the vivid colour ".." and the flickering movement of the poppies petals in the wind.

Nature was also used as a poetic device to reflect her own emotional and mental state. Her descriptions of landscapes are striking and the scene at times conveys her mood upon composing the poem. "Black Rook in Rainy Weather" may be strong in visual detail, but the environment does not matter. What is apparent and significant is the poet's mood. Plath was beginning to have doubts about her husbands love for her and she needed to be constantly reassured. In "Finisterre" there is a series of beautiful and dramatic images, many of these are personified ".." However, the anger in the poem is prevalent. This may have been the result of personal jealousies, differences between American and British views of gender roles, rural isolation and a return of her depression which caused problems in her marriage.

Plath's poems are graphically morbid, technically brilliant and convey tremendous emotional power. Her language has been commended for its control, power and incisiveness. "BRIRW" is an obvious example of her earlier control of language and form. The language is clear and precise and creates a story in pictures. "Pheasant" is an example her control of descriptive language, the words are simple and the descriptions are vivid. Many of her expressions echo everyday speech, giving the poems a light and easy rhythm, consider the opening of "Pheasant" "..".

There are many contrasting tones used with Plath's poetry. The tone reveals her inner state and quite a lot about her personality. She could be melancholic and elated in the same poem. In "Finisterre" there is an obvious contrast between the morbid ".." and the delicate "..".

Plath's poems are dark and moody in their imagery, clever and emotional. Her poems contain starkly contrasting images such as the dark head and later the red and green body of the pheasant in "Pheasant" She conveyed her fantastic imagination with her surreal imagery "souls rolled in the doom-noise of the sea" (F) In the "AOTBB" Plath brilliantly interlinks madness and death in the manner in which she refers to her bee-keepers outfit "in my moon-suit and funeral veil"

Sylvia Plath wrote poems that drew on her own experience of life and explored a range of emotions from happiness to terror and despair. She always looked inwards and rebelled against the conservative role she was expected to play. These inner conflicts are revealed in her poetry. Her writing has a universal appeal and it is presented innovatively and effectively. She wrote with a confidence that was not typical of women of her era, her work almost predicted the feminist writing that appeared in the decades after her death. Her work is peerless.

Ethical Decision Making

What makes a decision ethical? How do the influences affect our decision-making processes? Who are the influences? What should they be? Where do ethics and morals come into play? Webster's (18) defines ethical as "involving or expressing moral approval or disapproval; conforming to accepted professional standards of conduct". This paper will discuss what ethics in decision-making there are, what the ground rules are, if any, and the elements of an ethically defensible decision.

A person who is ethical is concerned with doing the right thing. When making a decision one should apply ethics to weigh the value or magnitude of impact. Often at times this can be challenging because there are so many influences that affect ones decisions. Ambiguity can play a big part in the circumstances, details, stakeholders, and morals in which decisions are made. Organizations usually have a universal standard of values such as a mission statement or a vision/ value statement that is accepted above or beyond the scope of a company's policies and procedures this serves as a guideline for ethical principals.

In 16 the Ethics Resource Center developed a simple acronym ethics filters to be used in decision-making. The acronym is PLUS which, stands for Policies, Legal, Universal, and self.

Cheap essay writers help on Ethical Decision Making essays

This provided organizational hierarchy for all employees with the same ground rules. This also provided a way to filter decisions through basic ethical and moral tests. In another example of applied ground rules, nurses have long since been ethically challenged in their profession. Noureddine, S. (000) states, "when faced with an ethical dilemma, nurses use formula ethics, where ethical principles are applied to a specific case to determine what one ought to do." Decisions will need to be re-evaluated or reworked based on ones personal or company's ethical ground rules. However, urgency is usually a deciding factor of influence on ones decision-making process. This often limits the information on which to base a problem, which limits alternative solutions. The amount of options or alternatives is especially important when using ethical based filters.

A red flag of ethical questions is raised on a daily bases to each and every one of us both personally and professionally. In ones profession he/she may or may not be in a position that requires them to make a decision that will have a huge impact on ethical decisions. Lets use the example of a recent corporate scandal such as Enron a company that was falsifying accounting records. In this organization choices were made to put aside the potential public risk and public trust in exchange for profits with out regard for their primary stakeholders which, where the employees who were basically screwed by their employer. The only basis for this decision must have been money over risk. It will take years for the stakeholders in this company to recover, if that is even possible. Was the decision to falsify accounting records premeditated or was it a result of a smaller decision gone wrong? The only way we will ever know is through an investigation into the dealings of the administrative upper management. One might venture to assume that the CEO and his partner's ethics are being called into question.

McCall and Kaplan (10 p) say, " Decision making cannot be divorced from a manager's values. Managers place different emphasis on outcomes such as return to shareholders, quality of work, and social responsibility. Because decisions have multiple consequences, the criteria used to evaluate a decision will depend on which consequences are emphasized and by whom."

When one makes a decision that has ethical implications one needs to ensure that it is ethically defensible. For example, working on the communications system in a hospital can have life and death consequences. Prior to shutting the system down for an upgrade, policies and procedures need to be followed to ensure ER and other vital units are covered. Hospital management and floor staff needs to be notified when this event will occur and informed of all alternative arrangements. The system needs to be worked on during a low traffic period to minimize any incidents. When all of these pieces are in place one knows that when one throws the switch to turn the power off that all the bases are covered and we did the best to ensure the safety of others.

The matter of moral and ethical decision-making confronts us everyday in our professions. At home or work, we are bombarded by decisions made by companies relying on our use of their products everyday. When a website is visited and an item purchased, is it ethical to retain that person's buying habits? Is it ethical to do so without their knowledge? Is it ethical to sell those buying habits, their e-mail and shipping addresses, and other personal information to another company without the buyer's knowledge? This utilizing and selling of personal information is an everyday event. The legal community and politicians are scrambling to catch up with the technology and deal with the vast array of ethical and privacy issues. The Internet spans worldwide making law enforcement difficult. The world will have to ban together to reign in this ever-expanding ethical void.

Ethics in decision-making is a part of our daily lives. It is far too prevalent in today's news, business, and schools. They are scrambling to upgrade their policies and curriculum to include some ethical requirements. Several articles state, " it may be better to integrate ethics in to other classes, so students see it as an integral part of other subjects they are studying, such as finance, marketing, or accounting." Ethics is in the forefront of everyone's mind and hopefully, this will spur change and a more ethically aware society. ( Houston Chronicle 00)

The Ferment is the conflict between the Muslims and the Westerners. The crisis within Islam involves a battle over leadership, and the challenge is not only to win over hearts and minds, but to avoid being silenced or chased out of the country. The battle is also for one purpose only and that is to establish the religion of Islam in its totality. The problem is with the US and Israel, and it is not a cultural problem. Rather, it is a result of the Israeli invasion of the Middle East and the U.S. unqualified support for that invasion. But since the 11 Gulf War, the US has become directly involved in the conflict. This is why violence has been directed towards the U.S.

Jihad is one of the most important elements in the Islamic ferment. Jihad is holy war. It means the legal, compulsory, communal effort to expand the territories ruled by Muslims at the expense of territories ruled by non-Muslims. The purpose of jihad is not directly to spread the Islamic faith but to extend sovereign Muslim power. Jihad did have two meanings. The first holds that Muslims who interpret their faith differently are infidels and therefore legitimate targets of jihad. This is why Americans and Israelis find themselves victims of jihadist aggression. The second meaning rejects the legal definition of jihad as armed conflict and tells Muslims to withdraw from the worldly concerns to achieve spiritual depth.

There is a conflict between the Israelis and the Arabs in the Middle East. The United Nations established Israel, a nation under control of Jews, in Palestine in the late 140s, in territory inhabited by Palestinian Arabs. Israel was placed in the midst of four Arab nations, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and Egypt. The presence of Israel has led to the conflict between Israel and the Arab world. Both the Israelis and the Arabs claim land in Palestine as theirs by ancestral rights and war has broken out between them.

All of this conflict is the result of a natural progression of Islam. It has grown through the years and embellished into a terrible head. It has caused and is still causing tragedies today.

The role of the witch in the movie, "The witches" by Nocolas Roeg is the same traditional, evil witch that we think of first when we say the word witch. Well, there are a lot of witches that are included in this movie, but I am going to discuss about the leader witch, because she is the one who all witches of England are trying to be like. She makes a potion and decides to turn all children of England into mice. Well, the victims of her idea are Luck, and his friend. By her behavior and actions we will see how she fits into the idea of traditional witch. Her character overall fits into the stereotype, and there would be a radical change if she wouldn't fit into the stereotype. The grand high witch completely fits into the typecast by her evil action, thoughts, role in this movie and the reason why she does all that evil stuff.

The grand high witch plays two roles in this movie. In a public she appears as an elegant, smart lady but nobody thinks that she might be the leader of all witches. The reason that she covers herself is because it'll be easier for her to cause much evilness and hurt children. Well, if she is in public obviously she sees what's going on, which makes her evil actions to develop easier. In other hand others who aren't like her of course will not accept her if she identifies her truth identity. And this gives us reason to think why she does whatever she does. Well, what age group most doesn't like witches and scared of them? The only and logical answer is, the children. Even ourselves when somebody hates us , we just become like them and start hating them too. And here we have very logical reason that shows why the grand witch wants to get rid of all children. And I believe that this idea really belongs to most traditional witches, the reason that they harm children. In her second, and real role, she transforms from elegant lady to an ugly old hairy, with a big nose, long and dirty fingers witch.

Her thoughts and actions are very wicked. She has magical power and uses it in evil way. During the meeting in the conference room one of the witches talks to another when grand witch was giving a speech. Because of that she turns the witch to an ash. Well, this shows how selfish she is. She doesn't even like her co- witches, but only herself. And I believe that the reason she is always with them it's because she is using other witches in order to accomplish her goal and turn all children to mice. But turning one of the witches to an ash shows that she is just using them, and she thinks about nobody but herself. Whoever appears on her way, she just gets rid of that person or creature. Just like she did with her co-witch. I also believe that she doesn't like children it's because they are pure; they haven't done anything wrong in their lives, yet. Any child I believe is very kind and doesn't have any evil in him/her. And the children are the ones who don't like witches. These witches have sensitive noses, and children just simply smell bad, somewhat like fresh dog feces. The whole idea of making a potion is because she hates children and wants to get rid of them. Also when she turns Luck and his friend into mice, she was enjoying seeing them two little mice instead of kids. She was laughing at them. When a person with a good personality helps someone, or makes someone happy that person feels joy and also becomes happy. However this is completely the opposite. The only thing that brings to her happiness is to see how children are transforming into mice, and to see how they suffer.

Talking about how the role of the witch effects on others, I came up with several characters of the movie that has been effected by her role. Well, Luck and his friend are the first ones that have been effected by her evil actions. However, they have learned how to find solution of a problem. Not only that, but they have learned to save others. When Luck transformed to a mouse, first of all he thinks to kill the witches and save all children of the England. This shows that he isn't selfish at all, but he learns how to be responsible. The last witch who hasn't transformed into a mouse has been also effected by the grand witch. Well, the last witch understands that good always wins, and instead of continuing to harm children, she starts helping them and turns Luck and his friend into boys again. This says that it is necessary that the grand witch fits into the stereotype. Because if she isn't evil , or she is basically not a traditional witch, these characters wouldn't be affected by her.

Essay help on "The Grand High Witch"

The grand witch does fit into the stereotype; nevertheless the only difference is that she covers it up with her mask. But overall she is a traditional, evil witch. Well, if she wouldn't hate children, or not even thinking of harming them this movie would be completely different. Well, in this movie the witch is one of the main characters and this says that the whole movie would be completely something else if the grand witch wouldn't fit into the stereotype. Luck and his friend wouldn't experience how to live this world as mice. Luck wouldn't think of danger at all. But now he is very careful, because he has been in danger, and knows how hard it is to overcome it.

By illustrating a traditional witch in a film, "The Witches" Nocolas Roeg shows much clear what a witch looks like. And it is easier to see her wicked actions and thoughts in the movie rather by reading a story. Sometimes people say that a person's physical appearance parallels to his/her soul. So if someone has a beautiful soul that person also has a beautiful look. I do agree with this idea. And this movie proves that physical and internal pureness and beauty are parallel. The grand witch has a wicked soul and very ugly face and her wicked action comes back to herself and kills her. This movie is just an example of a traditional witch. I believe that the grand witch does fit into the stereotype, by the way she thinks, by her physical appearance, actions and the reason of being traditional.

Scarletts OHaras final words in Gone With the Wind may be the most recognizable, and quoted, in film history. Even those who havent seen the film know the reference, a phenomenon evidently assumed by art critic Robert Hughes when he closed his recent eight-part video history of American art and architecture, American Visions with this of all lines.NOTE 1 That the film is popular and has been literally since its premiere in December 1 may be all too obvious, but less clear is the meaning and sources of this popularity. My claims are, first, that Americas relationship to Gone With the Wind is more complex than popularity suggests and might be characterized as one of love/hate--for the subject matter, the characters, even for the films notoriety. Second, this love/hate relationship is rooted, I believe, in the ways in which American myths, particularly those related to sex and gender, are both referenced and then violated in this film, particularly in the character of Scarlett OHara.

What seems to bother many viewers, including critics, is that Gone With the Wind is Scarletts story. Typical was film critic Otis Ferguson, who wrote, Scarlett is too many things in too rapid succession; the exact point of her aspirations is confused; there is so much sobbing and color and DeMille display, such a mudbath of theme music, that a clean realization of character or events is out of the question.NOTE

The seeming inability to understand Scarletts character is at the heart of both the dynamics of Gone With the Wind and responses to it. Scarlett makes viewers uncomfortable because she exposes the underside of regional and gender myths while embodying basic American (male) values transformed (but not transplanted) during an era of drastic economic change. The central, consistent, and apparently disturbing, theme of Scarletts ambiguous gender identity can be seen in three interrelated aspects of her life her relation to gender roles and other people; her relation to economic ideals and realities; and her relation to the war.

Cubism is an early twentieth century school of painting and sculpture in which the subject matter is portrayed by geometrical forms without realistic detail. That makes it mystic and difficult to analyze and define their ambiguous meaning. During that period, Jacques Riviere is one of a few cubism critics who profoundly know and understand cubism. Especially, he is able to interpret it in words which are easily comprehensible to the other. He does not only conveys the cubists' concepts but the mistakes of their works as well.

The essence of the cubists is to portray what objects really are instead of images which normal people see. Consequently, the images look distort from the original shape. Riviere analyzes the cubism transformation concepts in two functions including eliminating lighting and perspective. The cubists replace all these qualities by plastic values. They believe that lighting effects change the true senses of things. They reject the concept and nature of lighting and substitute to the equal and subtle distribution. The shade that normally place on some parts of object, are dispensed into a small portion to every part of object by placing it near the edge of surface, in order to divide and mark successive inclination of the parts of object. Therefore, the geometrical forms benefit them to unleash from the lighting rule. The advantage of this procedure is the unity and the separation function simultaneously.

Perspective is another thing that cubists remove because it conceals the true form of an object, as it will change every single time when we move the position. Therefore, the plastic image is used to represent all aspects of the object in only one sight. It sometimes reveals the exaggerate image that normally it is impossible to see at one position. Basically, perspective gives the depth of an object but the cubists think the depth is not only expressed by perspective. Perspective does not indicate depth by itself; instead the outlining profile implies it. The artist manipulates depth by the solid form and subtle object accompaniment. The advantage of this process is to mark the difference and relation between objects.

Then Riviere examines the mistakes of the cubists in several ways. First, from cubism concept, revealing every face of an object by placing side by side that give up its volume. Thus, it makes the image of the object flat like an unfolded map. Second, the cubists eliminate lighting and perspective because they don't want to unequally value between objects or parts of them. Perspective and lighting suggest the point of interest and the arrangement of the objects and picture, but they reject subordination causes so that their works fall back to the confusion and disorder things. The last, the cubism procedure represent the depth for the only purpose to set apart an object from another. The artist prolongs every direction of object and fills up the space between object by walls. Riviere claims that it useless and does away from their aims by the effects. Yet, it messes up their works and makes their works doubtful.

The cubists found a new principle by taking away of individual object meaning, in order to share the equal value to all together or the unity. They leave out the volume of the object to erase its component. And they represent solid forms instead of the depth by which separate an object to another. However, Riviere thinks that from the cubism rules make their works look

nonsensical and confusing.

Mini-research paper

Granny Weatherall a hard-hitting woman.

Write my paper on the jilting of granny weatherall for me

The very well known writer, Katherine Anne Porter, show us a very peculiar

character in one of her most famous short stories called "The Jilting of

Granny Weatherall". This narrative will have a profound and powerful effect on

the intelligence, imagination and feelings of any student. It is a story that

has richness of literal, figurative details, and illuminating visions of

Reality ( Altieri). Granny Weatherall, who would obviously be the main character in this

story, is going to be the one I will base my research on. This character is not

like any character we see in every story. Granny is a complex personality that

is directly related to Katherine Anne Porter. Porter had her personal reasons,

when she decided to write about her. This is a story mainly based on the

experiences Granny had before she died. Subsequently, It will be stated a brief

summary of the plot, and the different characteristics that describe the

personality of Granny Weatherall.

"The Jilting of Granny Weatherall" opens with Doctor Harry visiting the eighty

year old Granny during her final day of life. Next, the author moves to the

stream of consciousness narration which renders the thoughts and memories of

Granny's mind (Altieri.) Throughout the story, Granny reviews her life by

remembering the

important moments, disappointments, achievements, and feelings. Among all these

events, it is relevant to mention the caring for sick children and animals, the

lost of her last born, the dead of her husband, and the jilting sixty years ago,

when she was abandoned by George at the altar. She was never able to forgive him

because of the pain and humiliation he caused her, which will produce

hallucinations of him in the course of the story. Granny is remembering all the

time about her life and then dividing the present as dark times and the past as

the most brilliant and lightest times (Bloom, 186). Thus, the author will move

back and forth

from the past through the present using visions and hallucinations. At the same

time, Cornelia (Granny's daughter) is always taking care of her and suffering

the death of her mother. All the actions are placed in Granny's room, where all

of her family is accompanying her in her last moments. Along the family, Father

Connolly and Doctor Harry are next to Granny. At the end, the room seems to be

swallowed by the darkness and Granny ask for a sign of God that will never come

and then the darkness consume her when she blows out the light (Allen, 156),

which will mean

the death of Granny Weatherall.

This story is used by Porter partially to elaborate a fictional presentation of

her actual grandmother. The story is presented by an omniscient observer who

reports the consciousness movements of Granny from the present to the past,

including all of her old fears and dreams. Similar to Porter's grandmother Rhea,

Granny had been a strong-willed, active woman who had buried a young husband and

brought up a family (Hendrick, 165). Granny's emotional and spiritual

well-being is menaced by

the revival of the memory of George who jilted her. Granny gave order to her

life after her jilting. Then, she feels very confident and secure. She even

feels that she has death under control. However, everything seems to break apart

when Hapsy's memories come to her mind in her last moments ( Hardy, 17). Hapsy was the last

born that Granny lost. Hapsy seems to be the daughter she loved most but also

the one who had caused her most pain. Later on, Granny begins to have confused

visions or hallucinations of Hapsy as if Hapsy were Granny herself carrying a

baby. Then, Granny confuses Cornelia with Hapsy and makes this mistake with

Lydia, too. The disorder of Granny's past forces itself to show up over the

artificial " ordered life" cover that it had before, and Granny's fear of the

return of George to her memory comes true ( Hendrick). In these moments, she

realizes that

she can not control death. She was not as prepared for it as she thought. Death

would not let her put her life in order at last. She tried to love God without

forgiving the man who jilted her and therefore she ended as " one of the

foolish virgins without sufficient oil in her lamp to attend the bridegroom's

coming" ( Bloom). Granny did not have a complete success because she thought

that being

a human being means being orderly. She did not realized that the jilting was a

cause of disorder as well as a cause of order to her life. The next sixty years

of her life, after her jilting, would be an attempt to reorder her life through

religion, marriage, and bringing up a family ( Hardy). However, none of these

would help

her at all in finding the happiness one day she thought she could have.

Lamentably, Love disappeared for her the day in which George never showed up.

From that moment on, she would never dare to love anyone else and the wound

would never healed ( Hardy.) All of these means that Granny had internal

oppositions

during almost all of her life. There were two feelings or sides fighting one

against the other. At the end, Granny dies with a great feeling of

disappointment, which would never be compensated ( Hendrick.)

After a long wait, I can say that what we see here is a woman who realizes, in

great resentment, that she has never lived. A fact that happens at the end of

her life. It is not by chance that Henry David Thoreau's words come to mind at

the end of " The jilting of Granny Weatherall." Thoreau wrote that the " mass

of men lead lives of quiet desperation" ( 155). Porter tries to show us the

readers a life of quiet desperation. Granny lying on her death-bed and hoping

for ex detonation machine, ends up blaming a distant god for not showing up to

solve everything and make it all right (Hardy.)

I was merely a child when it happened. The day I was persecuted for a crime I did not commit. The day I was wrongly accused. The day I was betrayed by my own mother!

It all began on a stormy winter day. My family and I had just moved into our new house and were extremely excited. The four of us; my mom Kaiya, Dad Jim, little brother Jake, and I all decided to make one last stop at Grandma's house.

There was a lot of snow from the storm we had recently had. So my mom, Kaiya, loaded Jake and I into our car. The two of us are notorious for fighting so she left us with the warning, "Dad and I will be ready to go in two minutes, so we better not catch you fighting or you'll have to cut the lawn with scissors!" Hearing this I knew I better listen, but my brother was not so wise. The moment the car door shut he was up to no good. He started jumping around, yelling and acting like a complete idiot! Now, I don't have a lot of patience, so I stared into his baby blue eyes, giving him a look of death, and viscously told him to, "Sit down and shut up!" He would have nothing to do with me, and the next thing I knew he had rolled down the car door window and was hanging out of it like a mandrill!

After about a minute I noticed that Jacob was very quiet. This was extremely odd and as I stared at him I realized that he was stepping on the window control panel! A jolt of pure terror coursed through my entire body. My petite legs drove me to my mom in a flash of light. In a most horrified voice I screamed, "Jake rolled his head up in the window!" She glared at me with a stare so cold it pierced my soul. And with that I knew she thought I did it. There was no time to mope, before I knew it, I was thrown in the backseat and we were on our way to the hospital. Between my brother's gasps for air I prayed to God to let him live. If only he would grant me that, I would never harass Jake again.

We never did make it to the hospital. On the way he recovered splendidly. No matter how insignificant his injuries, I never will forget that feeling that I may lose my only brother forever.

Jane Eyre - Close analysis of pgs 80 & 81 - The death of Helen Burns

Influences in the authors mind are less, as being a author has no creative boundaries but influences from the society are quite a hefty load on the author. In this case Jane Eyre has many influences from the Victorian era which is when this book is written. In the following paragraphs I will analyze in detail the links between Victorian era and this novel in this specific scene.

The few basic concepts of the Victorian era displayed in this scene are

Friendship is a bond that is eternal. This is what is shown in the relationship between Jane Eyre and Helen Burns. This scene is the death scene of Helen Burns, this scene has occurred due to the poor conditions, etc in Lowood Institution. The scene starts as it portrays Jane in her bed, the time is an hour before midnight, Jane is constantly thinking of Helens condition, Jane gets out of her bed and starts moving towards Miss Temples room, this is where Helen is kept. Jane is narrating this paragraph, and she describes herself in a Quest to find Helen. This shows how close Jane finds herself to Helen. The description of the environment is silent, stealthy and dark. Bronte uses words such as Crept, Unclouded summer moon and softly to set the atmosphere for the reader. Jane narrates and uses words as dread being caught and must to show the strong bond between her and Helen, the word I must shows just how important Helen is to her. Jane says to herself one last kiss, exchange with her one last word, which signifies that Jane already knows the condition Helen is in. Jane reaches Miss Temples room undetected.

Cheap writing services for Analysis Of Death SceneJane Eyre papers

A light shone is a clich , symbolic for something like celestial angel which is how Bronte portrays Miss Temple, Jane uses words such as hesitate, quivering, impatient impulses this speeds up the scene to a certain extent. She also uses the words Souls and Senses which in someway shows gothic nature. My eyes sought Helen and feared to find death, The use of alliterative content to portray a better picture of fear for the reader. Close to Miss Temples chair, and half covered with white curtains, there stood a little crib pay close attention to the terms white which signifies purity and crib, which relates the reader to a baby, just the condition Helen is in right now, helpless and fragile. An unsnuffed candle burnt dimly on the table in this sentence the candle burning dimly is a metaphor that signifies the amount of life Helen has inside of her.

Jane uses the words corpse, pale, wasted which shows a ghostly almost gothic sensation. Helen! i whispered softly, are you awake? , the use of ? and ! puts a bit of excitement as a topping to indulge the reader furthermore into the scene. Bronte furthermore portrays through the use of body language by Jane as in her cheek both cold and thin, but she smiled as of old. This sentence shows that Helen is mentally strong but physically weak. The difference in these paragraphs between Jane and Helen is that Bronte portrays Helen as calm and collective whereas Jane as quick and jumpy.

There are many themes that are shown in these two pages some of them being friendship, love, death, religion, abandonment, moral and guidance. These themes some of them have been used throughout the novel, but some just newly introduced, such as the theme of friendship and love have just been introduced, love is further stretched when Jane meets Mr Brockelhurst. The theme of religion is displayed here through the use of gothic terms, such as Souls and Senses and the description of the Dark , Stealthy environment.

Yes; to my long home - my last home , Bronte conveys euphemism, by referring to death as a soft comfortable home. Bronte puts a certain amount of pressure and impact on the reader when she uses the words coughing seized. Helen also has a definite relationship and affection to Jane which is shown when she gives Jane a sensitive but imperative order to Lie down and cover yourself . Helen being the older one of the two acted as the elderly sister or evermore the mother in the girls relationship this is shown by the words nestled close to her , this is a motherly nature of birds. Helen as usual sees herself always at fault and always tries to look at the bright side of life, she thinks of herself less and more about comforting Jane. This is shown when Helen says i should have been continually at fault. and there is nothing to grieve about, Jane.

The theme of religion is again displayed through Jane in a matter of confusion when she says But where are you going Helen? Can you see? Do you know? . Helen replies by I believe; I have faith; I am going to god, this shows that Helen is a devoted follower of God, through the repetition of I this sentence gives a better impact to the reader, and afterwards Helen describes God and all of his positive traits and also uses the repetition of the word God. She describes God as a friend, and the fact that she loves and believes in him. There is contrasting characterization between the two about the subject of God and Religion, therefore Bronte uses Jane as a questioning tool, to make the reader get a better understanding, this puts the reader right into Janes shoes.

"How comfortable I am! That last fit of coughing has tired me a little; I feel as if I could sleep , the scene is about to close and it closes with Helen saying these few sentences and drifting of to eternal sleep., she insists on Jane not leaving her till her final moment and this signifies as quoted previously Friendship is a bond that is eternal , Helen says that after Jane dies she would see Helen again as she would come in the same land Helen believes she's going to, showing just how true and rare their friendship is. The scene ends with Jane and Helen saying Good - Bye to each other, the last words by Helen as she drifts of to eternal sleep.
