Throughout the Novel "The Wife of Martin Guerre" by Janet Lewis, the decision made by Bertrande to expose Arnaud as Martin's impostor was neither selfish nor foolish on her behalf, as it was understandable in the context of the novel's time and culture. Even after Martin so cruelly abandoned his wife and child, Bertrande remained strong, maintaining the care of their son and helping run the domestic life of the Guerre household herself. Throughout the 8 long solitary years she held her life and her son Sanxi's, together. When Martin imposts, Bertrande is aware and is uncertain if Martin is genuine "He was a stockier figure, broader in the shoulders, developed, mature..." This first realisation is reinforced when Martin begs for Bertrande's forgiveness and promises that he will never again leave her. He real martin would not have made such a promise.

The women of 16th century Europe had a very hard times gaining recognition for themselves as their opinions were ignored and regarded as inferior, compared to males in their unjust culture. It was only when Bertrande gained the support of Pierre Guerre that people took notice of what Bertrande was saying as it now had credibility.


Arnaud was tried in a court and was given the death sentence by decapitation for the heinous acts and crimes he had committed in the village of Artigues. Bertrande testified against her supposed husband and her opinion ended up carrying the most weight. Ironically it carried none before the support of Pierre Guerre. Yet Bertrande was shattered upon hearing the verdict and cried out "Not death! No, no, I have not demanded his death!"(p6). Bertrande never anticipated the death sentence, as she had only wanted a vindication of the truth, She asked for public penance, to pay a fine to the King and pay ten thousand livres to herself. But the strict social structure of the time called for a harsher treatment and he had to be severely punished.


The decision made by Bertrande to carry on with the case against Arnaud when it proceeds to Toulouse was selfish in some people's eyes, but it was mainly fuelled by self interest and justification. Bertrande was aware of the fact that she had sinned and this could be seen as her motion to set things straight. Close friends and family were delighted to have Martin back and they saw Bertrande as foolish for taking a stand against this man who was a good Cap d' hostel, husband and father. Bertrande needed to ease her conscience as she had sinned; this trial of Arnaud was Bertrand's vindication for closure and for her own solitary justice.


Bertrande is now "at last free, in her solitary justice, of both passions and of men." She now feels calmed of the guilt of unconsciously bearing an illegitimate child and having a sexual relationship with a man outside marriage. Therefore taking Arnaud to court at Rieux was a justified action in her eyes, even though those people around her saw the decision as foolish and selfish. Martins harsh judgement of Bertrande was ironic as he accused Bertrande of being immoral in her actions, even though she did they right thing by those around her who were supportive of Martins impostor, if anyone could have been more immoral it would have been Martin Guerre for disobeying his father and waiting eight long years to return home.


Bertrande was let down and dealt a harsh blow by the unjust and stern social system on which Artigues culture was built upon. When one makes a decision that has ethical implications one needs to ensure that it is ethically defensible. For example, working on the communications system in a hospital can have life and death consequences. Prior to shutting the system down for an upgrade, policies and procedures need to be followed to ensure ER and other vital units are covered. Hospital management and floor staff needs to be notified when this event will occur and informed of all alternative arrangements. The system needs to be worked on during a low traffic period to minimize any incidents. The role of the witch in the movie, "The witches" by Nocolas Roeg is the same traditional, evil witch that we think of first when we say the word witch. Well, there are a lot of witches that are included in this movie, but I am going to discuss about the leader witch, because she is the one who all witches of England are trying to be like. She makes a potion and decides to turn all children of England into mice. Well, the victims of her idea are Luck, and his friend. By her behavior and actions we will see how she fits into the idea of traditional witch. Her character overall fits into the stereotype, and there would be a radical change if she wouldn't fit into the stereotype. The grand high witch completely fits into the typecast by her evil action, thoughts, role in this movie and the reason why she does all that evil stuff.


The grand high witch plays two roles in this movie. In a public she appears as an elegant, smart lady but nobody thinks that she might be the leader of all witches. The reason that she covers herself is because it'll be easier for her to cause much evilness and hurt children. Well, if she is in public obviously she sees what's going on, which makes her evil actions to develop easier. In other hand others who aren't like her of course will not accept her if she identifies her truth identity. And this gives us reason to think why she does whatever she does. Well, what age group most doesn't like witches and scared of them? The only and logical answer is, the children. Even ourselves when somebody hates us , we just become like them and start hating them too. And here we have very logical reason that shows why the grand witch wants to get rid of all children. And I believe that this idea really belongs to most traditional witches, the reason that they harm children. In her second, and real role, she transforms from elegant lady to an ugly old hairy, with a big nose, long and dirty fingers witch.


Her thoughts and actions are very wicked. She has magical power and uses it in evil way. During the meeting in the conference room one of the witches talks to another when grand witch was giving a speech. Because of that she turns the witch to an ash. Well, this shows how selfish she is. She doesn't even like her co- witches, but only herself. And I believe that the reason she is always with them it's because she is using other witches in order to accomplish her goal and turn all children to mice. But turning one of the witches to an ash shows that she is just using them, and she thinks about nobody but herself. Whoever appears on her way, she just gets rid of that person or creature. Just like she did with her co-witch. I also believe that she doesn't like children it's because they are pure; they haven't done anything wrong in their lives, yet. Any child I believe is very kind and doesn't have any evil in him/her. And the children are the ones who don't like witches. These witches have sensitive noses, and children just simply smell bad, somewhat like fresh dog feces. The whole idea of making a potion is because she hates children and wants to get rid of them. Also when she turns Luck and his friend into mice, she was enjoying seeing them two little mice instead of kids. She was laughing at them. When a person with a good personality helps someone, or makes someone happy that person feels joy and also becomes happy. However this is completely the opposite. The only thing that brings to her happiness is to see how children are transforming into mice, and to see how they suffer.


Talking about how the role of the witch effects on others, I came up with several characters of the movie that has been effected by her role. Well, Luck and his friend are the first ones that have been effected by her evil actions. However, they have learned how to find solution of a problem. Not only that, but they have learned to save others. When Luck transformed to a mouse, first of all he thinks to kill the witches and save all children of the England. This shows that he isn't selfish at all, but he learns how to be responsible.The last witch who hasn't transformed into a mouse has been also effected by the grand witch. Well, the last witch understands that good always wins, and instead of continuing to harm children, she starts helping them and turns Luck and his friend into boys again. This says that it is necessary that the grand witch fits into the stereotype. Because if she isn't evil , or she is basically not a traditional witch, these characters wouldn't be affected by her.

great resentment, that she has never lived. A fact that happens at the end of

A universe consisting of thoughts strange to the common man exists inside his head. Despite being mentally retarded and an alliterate he is both pensive and intelligent. Though being able to distinguish humans from plants by the difference in appearance he draws clever and revealing, although unintended, parallels between the two lifeforms. Some might consider him peace-loving and gentle, but one must remember that peace is all he knows. Mr. Chance lives in the present never worrying about neither the past nor the future. 3; One could defend comparing Chances' departure from the garden to the biblical narrative dealing with The Garden of Eden. This notion would have Mr. Chance performing in the role as Adam. Both ended up in the house of wealthy, influential, upper-class benefactors. And I predict that Mr. Chance will keep heading upwards. Apart from being fashionable, charming in his own sense, direct yet polite, eloquent, quite handsome and in the eyes of many, not including himself, amusing he possess sexual appeal, which will definitely help him on his way. From this, the reader realizes that Li'l Bit and Uncle Peck do have a the same mind frame, even if there is at least 5 years separating them. However, the end of the scene may shock the reader when one sees an entirely different side of Uncle Peck. "Peck I tell you, you can keep all the cathedrals of Europe. Just give me a second with these these celestial orbs " (Vogel, 15). We are shown an intelligent and intellectual male who is not just an immature man, but truly does enjoy the female body parts. As wrong as it is for what Uncle Peck is doing, he respects the body parts of Li'l Bit, but he should realize that she is younger, and it is illegal and absolutely disturbing for what is he doing to her.


As much as this scene shows one what is going on, and give the reader a very good introduction to the play, the reader is also left wondering how this situation came to be and what will happen in the future with the two of them, Uncle Peck and Li'l Bit. "Peck That you are. Going on eighteen. Kittens will turn into cats. (Sighs) I live all week long for these few minutes with you you know that? Li'l Bit I'll drive." leaves one with interest about what will come (Vogel, 154). The reader is left with a bunch of unanswered questions, which leaves one with suspense and keeps the reader engrossed in events of the plot.


This beginning part of the play completes the play as a whole. Without this scene the play would not be completely finished. "My Faith is gone", exclaims Goodman; symbolizing the last of what he believed to be pure and untouched by evil was now gone along with his faith. Brown seemed to allow himself to be overtaken by the evil and then stumbled upon a midnight worship of the devil where he spied Faith. The s ance was surrounded by fire, which is symbolic of the devil. This may be because fire consumes as evil does and changes all that it touches forever or simply because it seems to accompany death and destruction. As he and Faith were on the verge of being baptized into the evil realm Goodman suddenly came to.


Whether this was all a dream or an actual journey is not specified. But the path Goodman Brown took that night forever changed him. He was so disturbed that he could not even trust his Faith who ran to welcome him home. As he stared into her eyes she could have only seen a man who had been broken and betrayed by his own beliefs.
