Story Telling & Painting

Story telling has been around for ages. At one time or another everyone has listened to a story or read a story to someone else. Story telling is something that instructs and entertains. For many people it is a simple way of passing time, but this is not the only art form that is used to instruct, entertain, or just pass time. There are many others like painting, basket making, music, drama, and so forth that also instruct. Painting is an art form that can be just as instructive or entertaining as story telling. As different as painting may be from story telling, there are still similarities in the way it instructs and entertains.

Story telling has been around ever since man has been walking the earth. Take the Bible for example, the Bible has a collection of stories that date back a long time ago. Telling a story is a great tool for instructing or teaching, because often when people try to get a point across and it is not sinking through people will use stories to try and create a better understanding of what we are talking about. For purposes of entertainment, stories have also developed into movies, books, plays, and things of that nature. Most stories entertain because of the fact that most of them are not real and people enjoy listening to fictional stories that have a meaning behind them, especially children. Another reason why people find stories entertaining is because most stories end up telling morals or lessons. Stories make people use their imagination to put pictures with words instead of words with pictures. Take any fairy tale or any fictional story, as soon as someone reads them pictures automatically pop into their heads. Yet another reason why people like stories is for the anticipation for the ending. Most people cannot wait to find out what happens at the end of a good story. Since this is not a perfect world not every one is good at telling stories or even likes to tell stories, so there has been other forms of art invented to help this.

Painting is another art form that dates back to the beginning of man. When people look at paintings or drawings many people consider them just a picture and not a way to instruct. Since drawing and painting is something that I am rather good at I have learned to not look at a painting as just a painting but as visual communication. Take children's books for example, because most young children cannot read people put in pictures that help illustrate the story so they can understand them, therefore instructing them. Paintings are also used on flash cards when trying to teach a foreign student English. Most words can be put with a visual and elementary teachers will use this method of instructing to show students the actual picture and the word associated with that picture. People will also use paintings to help get a point across when nothing else will work. Painting is a way of taking words and putting them into a visual context. We could take any instructive story and turn it into a painting and get just as much out of it. When looking at a painting people have to use their imagination more because it is not spelled out for them like a story. Someone could think it means one thing where as another person could think it means another. While in stories it is written out for whoever is reading or telling the story.

Story telling and painting may have their obvious differences in the way they instruct or entertain but they are more similar than we think. Both story telling and painting are entertaining except one is to the ears and the mind while the other is to the eyes and the mind. Since everyone has different ways they like to do things there are many types of art forms that are used when trying to instruct or entertain. Painting is one of many art forms that can do this. It instructs by using illustrations and visuals to get the point across. Whether or not the point is clear right off the bat is up to the artist. Sometimes the artist will have more than one meaning behind it and that is where ones imagination comes into play. The entertaining aspect of painting really depends on the viewer them self.

Monday when the Parks' case was due to go to court. They distributed the anymous fliers throughout Montgomery on the Friday morning. Then came in Martin Luther King Jr who was minister at the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church at the time. He had the idea that if they could get at least a 60% co-operation the boycott would be a success. Mr King was then pleasantly surprised when bus after empty bus rolled past his house in the early morning. King later wrote that "A miracle had taken place", and "The once dormant and quiescent Nergo community was now fully awake". The group that organised the boycott met again and decided to call them selves the Montgomery Improvement Association (MIA) and elected Mr King as their president. The MIAs next decision was whether or not to continue the boycott or end it. Some of the ministers wanted to end it saying it was a one day success. Then E.D Nixon got up to speak and quote he said "Whats the matter with you people? Here you have been living off the sweat of these washerwomen all theres years and you have never done anything for you. Now you have a chance to pay them back, and you're too damn scared to stand on your feet and be counted! The time has come when you men is going to have to learn to be grown men or scared boys". After that the MIA had a vote on whether or not people wanted to continue the boycott. The decision was unanimous that the boycott would continue. The MIA worked out a "private taxi" plan in which blacks that owned a car woud pick up and drop off blacks at designated points. The idea worked so well that even the White Citizens Council had to admit that it moved with "Military precision". Over the days of the protest whites grew angry with boycottand tried all means possible to end it. The blacks however continued to stay of the buses until the mandate from the Supreme Court arrived. Within that time the MIA tried to prepare blacks as best they could for the hopefully new integrated buses. On December 1, 156 blacks returned to the buses wich was just over a year later. The trouble was not yet over for the black community however, as a wer quite small in comparsion to what they would later win but still they got a new organisation called the MIA and a god leader, Mr Martin Luther King Jr. All this would helpthough as blacks from around the south started to stand up for them selves.Church at the time. He had the idea that if they could get at least a 60% co-operation the boycott would be a success. Mr King was then pleasantly surprised when bus after empty bus rolled past his house in the early morning

Being an American

In the essay "The Discovery of What It Means to Be an American", James Baldwin

describes being an American. Baldwin writes that being an American is not as easy going as

many people believe it to be. Also, Baldwin writes that in this country many people had to go

through racism and had to live in a lower class because of their race and because of the job

they had. Baldwin believes that he was as much of an American as anyone else who lived in

America no matter of his race or the job he worked. To be an American goes much farther then

what job you have, what race you are, or what you family background is. All you need to be an

American is to live in this country and to love your country. Furthermore, by being an American,

you get to live in the greatest and strongest nation in the entire world.

James Baldwin was a black male writer, who was a son of a slave. At the beginning of

his essay, Baldwin described the term "America" as an undefined and extremely controversial

proper noun. He also says that no one in the entire world knows what the word "America"

means. America is a word that stands for freedom. No other country in the world is like

America because no other country gives the freedom to it's citizens as America does. In

America any one can believe in any kind of religion they want to and they can say anything

they believe in about their government. Also, no other country has the diversity that America

has. America welcomes all kinds of people into the country from any other country. No other

Festa

country gives people the same education and job opportunities that America gives people.

James Baldwin believed that America didn't give black Americans the same

opportunities that it gave to white Americans. Baldwin left America because he

doubted that he could survive the color problem that was going on in America at the time.

He left America and went to Europe. In Europe, Baldwin had much more success in writing

then he did in America. He believed that in order to be a successful American writer you

must first leave the country. By writing in Europe, Baldwin came up with his concept of

America.

During Baldwin's life, Europe had more positive traits then America had. In Europe,

people lived with the idea of status for a long period of time. This meant that people would

stay at their job and would feel proud of what they were doing even if their job wasn't that

good of a job. Also people with higher jobs didn't look down at people with lower jobs

just because they made more money then the others did. In America people with higher

jobs always looked down at people with less money and discriminate against them just

because of what kind of job they had. In Europe people were more friendly towards each

other because they weren't threatened that someone might try to take their job. In

America people are always trying to get higher jobs no matter what they had to go through

to achieve a higher job then what they had previous.

Since James Baldwin's life, America has changed for the better. Today there isn't

as big of a race problem as there was back then. When Baldwin was alive, the country was just

at the end of slavery. White Americans thought that African Americans where at a lower

level then themselves because they didn't get the opportunity to be as educated as whites.

Festa

Today, most white Americans look at people of different color the same they look at whites.

African Americans now get the same learning and job opportunity that whites do. With this said,

there are still some people who think that white's are superior to blacks. Because of this change

in the American culture through the years, American has become a better society, and the greatest

nation in the entire world.

Ultimately to become an America you must live in America. By living in America you

get a greater education and job opportunity then in any other nation. Knowing this, many

different people of different races come here. With all people welcomed to become Americans,

the United States of America has the most diverse nation. Because of its diversity, America is

the greatest nation in the entire world.

1. Introduction

In the last chapter Nick describes Daisy and Tom Buchanan as „careless people […] they smashed up things and creatures and then they retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made."

That shows that Nick thinks about Daisy and Tom that they have got the same characters. They are cruel and d they do not care about other people. They have got no real friends and whenever there is a problem they just flee and do not think about the consequences.

But don not know what happened between Daisy and Tom when they arrived home after the accident. Was it Daisy's own decision to move away or was she influenced by Tom?

Cheap essay writing service offers papers on John Fitzgerald: a characterisiation of daisy in the great gatsby

The scene in the hotel room when Tom and Gatsby fight about Daisy shows that Daisy is just a "ball" which is thrown between the two men. She did not really know what she wanted and changed her mind from one moment to the other just because of some sentences that were said. Daisy is a weak person in this scene.

The question that rises is Is Daisy Fay Buchanan really one of the careless characters or is she just a victim of Tom's superiority?

In the following text I am going to examine Daisy's behaviour before, during and after she met Jay Gatsby.

. Analysis of Daisy's character

. 1 Chapter I IV Before the reunion

In the first chapter Nick describes his first meeting with Daisy and Tom Buchanan.

Soon we learn about Tom's superiority and his arrogant character. Nick describes him not only as a powerful man but also as a "cruel" man

"Now he was a sturdy, straw haired man of thirty with rather hard mouth and a supercilious manner. Two shining, arrogant eyes had established dominance over his face and gave him the appearance of always leaning aggressively forward. Not even the effeminate swank of his riding clothes could hide the enormous power of that body he seemed to fill those glistening boots until he strained the top lacing and you could see a great pack of muscle shifting when his shoulder moved under his thin coat. It was a body capable of enormous leverage a cruel body."

Tom likes his power, and like the potentates of Eastern kingdom

When we follow the first meeting between Nick and Daisy Fay Buchanan Daisy seems to behave like a child. She laughed all the time and talked with an "excitement in her voice that men who had cared for her found difficult to forget" .

Daisy is described as a little stupid Lady in a white dress. When her husband Tom talked about his book he had read she did not understand a word and interrupted him just to be part of the conversation.

She repeated the sentences she had heard from Tom without knowing what she said "We've got to beat them down, whispered Daisy, winking ferociously toward the fervent sun" .

Later in the first chapter we learn that Daisy is not very happy with her life. Tom has got a mistress in New York and Daisy is almost helpless.

She tells Nick that she "had a very bad time" and that she is "cynical about everything"

When she told Nick about giving birth to her daughter we see how she feels about life "Well, she was less than an hour old and Tom was God knows where. I woke up out of the ether with an utterly abandoned feeling and asked the nurse right away if it was a boy or a girl. She told me it was a girl, and so I turned my head away and wept. `All right, I said, `I'm glad it's a girl. And I hope she'll be a fool that's the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool. `"

Daisy also behaves like a "beautiful little fool ". We get the idea that she doesn't understand things very well. When she says the sentence about her daughter it becomes clear that she is very cynically about life and that she behaves only like a fool because this can protect her from many hurts.

In the second chapter Daisy does not play an important role but we learn something about the selfishness of her husband Tom.

On the party in Myrtle Wilson's apartment Tom hits Myrtle because she annoys him by insisting that she can say "Daisy" any time she wants. Tom breaks her nose with his open hand. So this is what happens to those who become entangled with Tom Buchanan. Tom, we see, is strong and brutal and absolutely selfish.

Chapter four is the next chapter in the novel where we learn something about Daisy. We learn something about her youth and about the time she met Jay Gatsby.

The story about Gatsby and Daisy sounds like a fairytale. The princess in this case is Daisy Fay, an eighteen-year-old beauty, the most popular girl in Louisville, Kentucky. All the officers from nearby Camp Taylor are competing for the honor of her company. On this particular day, she is sitting in her white dress in her white roadster with a young lieutenant who is speaking to her with the kind of romantic intensity that princesses adore. His name is Jay Gatsby. Daisy apparently loves him as much as he loves her, for she' s ready to go to New York to say good-bye to him when he' s sent overseas

We get the feeling that Daisy enjoyed it very much that all the officers fell in love with her and that she could get from them whatever she wanted.

I think that she did not really love the men she was together with. She just enjoyed the feeling that she was loved by everybody and she did not have to do very much for this.

When she met Tom Buchanan she realized that all his money and his "pomp and circumstances" would perfectly fit to a white princess as she was. I think that this was the only reason she married Tom Buchanan. He was rich and she wanted to marry someone who was rich and could give her the standard of living she wanted to have.

It was not until she got the letter from Gatsby that she thought of him. When she received the letter before her wedding she drank herself into a state of near stupor. That shows that this was the first time she really thought about her decision. It came to her mind that maybe she missed the love that Jay Gatsby had given her and that Tom could never give this to her.

But her decision was to marry money and not love.

Tom had an affair even a short while after his wedding. Since we already know that Tom is having an affair with Myrtle Wilson, it does not surprise us that Tom has been unfaithful before.

Daisy realized that Tom was unfaithful but she did not do anything against it. What the reader may think is that it did not hurt her that much because she still loved Gatsby but as Jordan describes it, Daisy has not given Gatsby a thought until the mention of his name jarred her memory.

The story about Daisy's youth has shown that she is a very superficial person. She did not care about the feelings of other people and married Tom Buchanan just because he fitted into her small "princess world".

Even when Tom Buchanan was unfaithful she did not leave him.

Her behaviour in the first chapters shows that she is not happy with her life. But on the other side she does not change anything.

Her husbands behaviour and his superiority lead us to the assumption that she is inferior to Tom.

She has never learned to lead her own life and is so far dependent on her husband.

. The reunion love or just romanticism?

In chapter five the reunion between Daisy and Gatsby takes place. Nick agrees to invite Daisy over.

When the day arrives Gatsby is so nervous that ha can hardly function.

Daisy looks absolutely beautiful in a three-cornered lavender hat, "with a bright, ecstatic smile" . She is dying to know why Nick has invited her over.

After Gatsby came in and shook hands with Daisy they drink tea together. They try to make conversation and after a while Nick excuses himself.

When Nick returns, the rain has stopped, the sun is out, and Daisy and Gatsby are radiantly happy. Nick can see that "Daisy's face was smeared with tears" .

We already know that Daisy is crying whenever she is overwhelmed by a situation and she can' t deal with it. It is her way to protect herself.

After tea Gatsby walks Daisy and Nick over to his house and shows them his possessions. When he shows daisy his shirts and throws them around in his room Daisy is overwhelmed and starts to cry again. Daisy admires the house, the gardens the gigantic rooms, the colours of pink and lavender, the sunken baths. The princess is astounded. Gatsby overwhelms her with these tangible signs of affection.

I think that Daisy is not only impressed by Gatsby' s possessions because she has got money herself. She is impressed by Gatsby's extraordinary dedication to his dream. She realizes that Gatsby just bought the house and all this possessions because of her. It is the first time in her life that somebody has done such a great thing for her. Tom also has got many possessions but for Tom she is part of the possessions. Gatsby has bought his possessions just for her. She is overwhelmed and moved to tears because she finds herself the object of so much adoration.

Comparison Essay

By: Xavier

College vs. University When you graduate high school you have your choice of what kind of an education you want to get. You have your choice of going to a 4-year university, or a 2-year college. In order to decide you will compare the two and use the comparisons to come up with your final decision. Questions to ask yourself would be, what are you looking for in college, how do you want to learn, and how much money do you have to work with. Comparing University and Community college the first thing that comes to mind is the difference in price. Certain Universities are more expensive than others. The difference in price is because of the difference in price and size, also because of the difference in the educational program they have. The price for a University can also differ with whether or not you are going to live there. With a Community college the price will differ significantly. The difference in price strands for the difference in size, teaching and living. At a Community college you have a smaller campus, the curriculum is different and you do not have the option of living there. When choosing you have to think of what you are looking for out of college. Some of you go to college go to play a sport for that college, in which case you would go to a University. At the time of graduation you are usually around 17 to 19, at this point in your life you have to think if you are ready to move out of your parents house and be on your own, and many do, again you would choose a University. There are some of you who want to stay under mom and dad's roof and just want to go to college to see what living by yourself is like, to see if you will like it. In this case you would choose a Community college. For some this can be one of the harder decisions to make. Another difference of a University and Community college is the size. Not just the size of the campus, but the size of the classes and workload that you will be facing. With a University you have a large campus with numerous class buildings and dorms. At a Community college you will usually have only one building and all that this building contains is classrooms for learning. Sizes of most University classes are over 30 of you to a class; sometimes that number can be as high as 100 students to a class. When you are a student at a Community college you are usually one out of twenty. The most you will probably find in a classroom of a Community college will be around thirty. Then there is always the size of the workload. When you go to a University you are usually expected to have to spend about 3 to 4 hours out of the classroom on your work, and that is for each class. That is why a large number of you that attend a University do not have jobs and if they do it is only part time. When attending a Community college you are expected to spend about 2 hours of time on work outside of the classroom, for each class. It may not seem as that much of a difference, but it is when a full course load at a University is 5 classes and a full class load at a Community school is 4 classes. Most of you who attend Community college have part or full time jobs. As you can see there are many differences when comparing University to Community college. It all depends on what you want out of college and what you can afford. For most there is one difference that is more significant then the other, that difference is usually what makes or breaks your decision.

These are three characteristics of Oedipus personality. There are more but I think that the great idea he had for himself, the thirst he had for truth and his afraid of conspiracies were the most characteristics points of his personality in this play.

jealousy with Gene as Gene does with Finny. He never thinks of their relationship as a competition, but

Gene still feels overshadowed and controlled.

The inner war that Gene holds with Finny is what ultimately leads to Finny's crippling and death.

Before the accident Finny asks Gene to come watch Leper jump out of the tree for the Super Suicide

Society. Gene feels that Finny is trying to intentionally make him do poorly in his classes. Gene tells

Finny that if he goes it will ruin his grades. Finny is honest and says he never knew that Gene had to

study to get good grades. Gene realizes that Finny had made a parallel between his athletics and

Gene's studies; Finny thought that Gene's knowledge simply came to him. All at once Gene's

rationalization of Finny is destroyed, understanding that he and Finny are not really alike at all. Finny is a

good person free of envy and Gene is inferior. Gene feels once again, insignificant and secondary, and

releases his frustration by pushing Finny out of the tree. Even though the action was done on blind

impulse Gene still feels a sense of joy to have defeated someone who he considers an enemy and threat.

This entire accident was all a result of competition. After the accident Gene feels superior to

Finny and therefore, can be his friend not his rival. Gene is happy that Finny will never be as great as he

was. He will never be able to participate in sports or even walk as smoothly as he did. Gene feels he

has finally won the inner war he had with Finny and no longer has to compete against his best friend.

In "Bless the Beasts and Children" competition is also an substantial part of the theme. Box

Canyon Boys Camp is centered around competitions. Boys were not assigned cabins to stay in but

instead they found a group and cabin to be in. Competition separated the popular kids from the social

rejects and the winners from the losers. The Lally brothers, Teft, Goodenow and Shrecker were misfits.

They were wealthy, emotionally disturbed boys. They wet the bed, sucked their thumbs, and had

nightmares. No one wanted them in their cabin. Only one "normal kid", Cotton would tolerate and lead

the misfits.

Everything at the camp revolved around competition. Each cabin was a team. Each team

competed in riding, archery, riflery, crafts, swimming and field sports. All of the competitions were

scored. The teams would be ranked in order from highest to lowest and given Indian tribe names

according to their ranking. The highest ranked team was the Apaches, followed by the Sioux,

Comanches, Cheyenne, Navajo and the last place team was the "bedwetters". No one wanted to be the

"bedwetters". It was a shame and an embarrassment and that team was teased, tormented, and

taunted. While the Apaches acquired a head of a buffalo bull, the "bedwetters" received a large white

chamber pot. Cotton and his crew always were the "bedwetters". This caused them all feel very badly

about themselves. They all felt that they weren't anybody, useless and ineffectual. This feeling of

rejection caused and originated the mission to save the buffalo. They felt instant empathy when they saw

the defenseless, innocent animals slaughtered. Ironically the feelings of the animals was parallel with the

feeling of the young men. They knew the feeling of uselessness. The freeing of the buffalo symbolizes

the freeing of themselves, their own self-discovery and their maturation into

Many women and men are looking into human cloning because they

are infertile. But, the problem is that the U.S. congress is considering human

cloning for reproductive purposes to be a criminal act (Lampman 1). They

will have to wait a while if they want to have their child by cloning.

Another way to have a child is by vitro-fertilization, which allows the ability

to start a life outside of the womb (British 2).

Creating a human clone would have many birth defects because of all

the genes. There are over 30,000 genes in a body. There is no way they

could test over 30,000 genes. There would probably be mutations and such

in the genetic code of the body. There is a high risk of change in the genetic

code (Drlica 147).

In conclusion there should not be human clones until further research

is done on the subject. Before scientists start making human clones

scientists should get the success rate of animal clones up much more than

three percent. It could be beneficial but it will take a lot of research

and testing. Human cloning may be playing god but eventually someone

will make a human clone, whether it is in a year or one hundred years.

ITALIAN AUSTRALIANS

There are more than 1 million people of Italian background in Australia. Italian Australians are the now the third largest ethic group in Australia.

Italians have been migrating to Australia for 00 years. The largest number came in the years following World War II.

SPECIAL FESTIVALS.

Most Italians are Roman Catholics and many festivals are linked to religious events. Christmas, Easter and Lent are important festivals for Catholics. Lent is 40 days of self-denial with one final indulgence of food and partying, Carnevale. Many Italians are named after saints, and people celebrate their saint's day as well as their birthday's.

The Italians are famous for having very close families. One festival they take very seriously is Festa dei Morti, a day when they pay their respects to any of their relatives who have died

.

Other main events in the Italian community are weddings, christenings and funerals. The celebrations at a wedding included a lavish meal of several courses, with different wines. The tradition was to invite the whole town but costs have become too great.

Farming families would also get together to make wine, salami, pasta and bread. Another custom was to get together to distil a spirit known as grappa.

Thousands of people from Sydney and different parts of New South Wales attend the Brookvale annual festival of Italian song and entertainment.

Every year, an Italian festival is held in Lygon Street, Carlton, Melbourne. Along this street, there are Italian restaurants. A street procession is held , along with all-night pavement parties.

TRADITIONAL FOODS.

Italian immigrants were among the pioneers of irrigation, grape, sugar and tobacco growing and the fishing industry. They are major producers of fruit and vegetables in Australia. They introduced new crops such as olives.

Italian food is very popular in Australia. When Australians eat at a restaurant, the dish they most commonly order is pasta. There are many kinds of pasta, including spaghetti, fettuccine, vermicelli, lasagne and cannelloni. Another famous Italian food is pizza. Pizza originally came from Naples, in the south of Italy. Nearly every town in Australia has a caf that sells pizza.

The Italians brought espresso coffee to Australia. Caf s everywhere serve Italian-style coffees. These include cappuccino, caffe latte and macchiato. Cappuccino is the most popular non-alcoholic drink in Australia.

Gelato is a kind of ice-cream with fruit or nut flavouring. This is another Italian food that is now an Australian food.

MULTICULTURALISM

In Australia, immigration has largely been encouraged as a means of expanding our economy and population. The numbers rise and fall depending on whether or not we think the economy can cope with the increased numbers.

Immigration has been an issue in Australia for many years. It was one of the main reasons put forward in favour of Federation. It was hoped that a federal government would control immigration, so 'undesirable' immigrants could not enter Australia. An 'undesirable immigrant was any person not of the 'British race'. This meant that only white people were welcome in Australia, and that those white people should come from the British Isles or some other British colony or ex-colony.

There were three reasons for this preference. The first was the concern that 'coloured' immigrants would work for lower wages than people in Australia, and so would take all the jobs. Secondly, it was feared that the existence of another large racial group would lead to violence. The third reason was pure racism - prejudice based on the belief that one race of people is superior to another. A hundred years ago it was not considered wrong to think of your own race as superior to others, or to think of other people as inferior simply because of their skin colour. The 'White Australian Policy' was the term used to describe the Australian immigration policy. To be eligible to migrate to Australia people had to pass a language test. Those consider 'undesirable' were given a test in a language they couldn't speak. This term 'White Australia' was used for many years and was not officially abandoned until 174.

In our society today, these ideas are cruel and wrong. Now people of many races, cultures and religions are accepted as Australians.

After wold war II, many refugees and displaced persons migrated to Australia from Europe and other places, where they had endured great hardship and suffering. They, and the migrants who came after them, wanted to make a better life in a new country .

After the war, Australia needed more workers, for example on the Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric Scheme. To provide the workers needed, the government aimed to bring in 70 000 migrants a year, mainly from the United Kingdom and other European counties.

In the 0 years after world war II, Australia's population doubled to 14 million. Immigrants and their children made up much of the increase.

In the 170s, refugees again began coming to Australia, this time from South East Asia. The Vietnam War ended in 175. Between 175 and 18, almost million Indochinese people fled their countries. During these years, almost 65 000 Indochinese refugees arrived in Australia. By 17, the Australian population consisted of about 00 different ethnicities, in addition to the Australian Aboriginal peoples. In that year, the Australian Government officially recognised the contributions made by all the different cultures to Australian society, and began to encourage all Australians to be proud of their origins. This belief that it is good for Australian society to be made up of many different cultures is called multiculturalism.

In the early 10s there was an increased emphasis on immigration and refugees from Asia. There has always been some controversy about accepting refugees. However, it was not until the arrival of 'boat people', refugees from Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, and more recently asylum seekers from Afghanistan, that the Australia's refugee program came under the 'national and international eye'. As a member of the United Nations, Australia has an obligation to accept a reasonable number of refugees under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The birthplace of overseas-born residents gives some indication of the diversity of ethnicity of a population. When Australian born residents with one or both parents born overseas are combined with overseas born a fuller picture of cultural diversity emerges.

The following data is derived from the 16 Census.

% of Australians were born overseas.

1.1% of Australians have at least one parent born overseas.

Around 70% of Australian born people with a least one parent born overseas live in NSW and Victoria.

Over 70% of Australian born people had both parents born in Australia.

Over 0% of Australian born people had at least one parent born in a non-English speaking country.

The major birthplaces of the overseas born population in 16 were England, New Zealand, Italy, Vietnam, Scotland, Greece, China, Germany, Philippines, and Netherlands.

The United Kingdom and Ireland account for about 78% of the overseas born population in 111 and only % in 16.

Nearly three quarters of the children of migrants (people born in Australia with one or both immigrant parents) marry people of different cultural background to themselves.

One in six families in Australia involves a marriage between an overseas-born and an Australian-born partner.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion on immigration, but it should be remembered that there are equally good arguments on all sides of debate. What is important is that people's arguments are based on reason and fact, not simply on emotions. I am for the continuation of immigration for those who are unable to live in their country safely.

There is probably no longer a need to increase Australia's population and expand the economy, But there is a humanitarian need to provide a stable home for people who, if they stay in their own homeland will die.

Detention camps are an unsatisfactory way to treat refugees, but I believe something similar is necessary in order to ascertain who is genuine.

Australia is a large country with much open space. We should be able to think globally and creatively to accommodate people in need.

This is a problem that will only get worse with the looming war in Iraq. Many Australians have little idea of life in a war torn country or living in a undemocratic society.

But if we ask ourselves the question, would we want another country to help us if we could no longer live safely in Australia?

Wouldn't our answer be yes!

Improving Patient Outcomes The Role of Medicines and the

Innovative Pharmaceutical Industry in An Integrated Health System

Speech by Jean-François Leprince, President, Aventis Pharma, Chairman, Canadas Research-Based Pharmaceutical Companies, (Rx&D)

College papers on Moving experiences

OTTAWA (April 4, 00) Thank you Commissioner Romanow (and members of the Commission?) for allowing us to present our views on the future of health care in Canada. My name is Jean-François Leprince and I am President of Aventis Pharma and Chair of the Board of Directors of Rx&D. With me today is Murray Elston, President of Rx&D, the national association representing over 1,000 employees who work for Canadas 6 research-based pharmaceutical companies.

While several proposals are being put forth on the future of health care in this country, we are of the firm opinion that patient health outcomes should be the paramount consideration in the development of government health policy and the delivery of health services. We also believe that an effective solution to the issues facing our health care system in Canada must include measures to ensure that effective medications are accessible to patients and then used appropriately to achieve optimal health outcomes.

Innovative medications, when used appropriately, have been proven to prevent illness, effectively treat disease, improve quality of life and manage patient care outside of institutional settings. It is often the case that innovative pharmaceuticals help avoid hospital admissions and shorten hospital stays. Once patients are moved out of hospitals, however, their medication costs become an expense to either an insurer or themselves. This interface between hospital and community care can be problematic for patients, from both a clinical and an economic perspective. We believe there should be a seamless continuation of pharmaceutical therapy between these care settings, as unnecessary changes in treatment, often due to drug plan restrictions, can result in adverse health consequences for patients, and avoidable costs for the health care system.

Given the importance of medications, Rx&D believes that they should be considered a medically necessary component of the health system. There should be adequate coverage programs in place to ensure all Canadians have access to necessary innovative prescription medicines. This access should not be dependent on geographic location, age, gender or wealth. It should be up to health service providers, in discussion with patients and on a case-by-case basis, to determine whether pharmaceutical treatment is medically necessary. It is important to bear in mind that an individuals response to medications is unique in terms of effectiveness, side effects, compliance, and other measures. While it is a fact that large studies are undertaken to demonstrate the relative safety and efficacy of innovative medicines, the real test occurs when the individual is receiving the therapy. For those who do not respond as anticipated, it is imperative that other therapeutic options are available.

Advances in pharmaceutical therapy have a direct and measurable effect on the health of individuals and populations. New medications are approved for use in Canada only once they have been proven safe and efficacious. We must all commit to improving the use of these approved medications in patients that will benefit from them. The over-, or under-use of proven therapies has undesirable health and economic consequences and compromises our ability to achieve their full potential value. We refer you to the compelling examples of asthma and cardiovascular disease cited in our written submission to the Commission. Integrated efforts must be undertaken to promote and assure optimal drug therapy, including the involvement of physicians, pharmacists, other health professionals, payers, innovative pharmaceutical companies and, of course, patients themselves.

Education is a critical component of optimal medication use, as are monitoring systems to provide information and feedback on the effectiveness of treatment. Rx&D believes that to improve decision-making and to achieve an accountable, integrated health system, the government needs to encourage a disease management concept that relies on evidence-based, outcome-oriented performance indicators.

Less attention should be paid to administrative barriers such as reference-based pricing that are implemented solely to control drug plan costs rather than ensure optimal patient care. Evidence from reference-based pricing studies in Europe indicates that such policies do not control pharmaceutical costs over the long term. Norway abandoned the practice after concluding that the cost of running the program exceeded the savings on medicines. We include numerous examples, in our written submission, of peer-reviewed studies on reference-based pricing that clearly state the pressing need for more research to understand the full impact of such programs. To summarize, the effects of reference-based pricing on the use and cost of other health services, the administrative burden to physicians and pharmacists, and most importantly, the health outcomes of patients, have yet to be adequately analyzed. A systematic evaluation of reference-based pricing is therefore essential before such a policy is further endorsed.

Disease management programs have been shown to be effective strategies for optimizing patient care, and hold promise as one of the keys to ensuring the sustainability of our health care system. Such programs take a broad view of health management with a view to improving patient health outcomes while, at the same time, reducing the economic burden on society as a whole. They are centered around multidisciplinary, patient-focused approaches to implement best practices in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease, and can result in significant benefits for individual patients and society at large. Such health management programs cannot be successfully approached in a piecemeal fashion, but must include the committed participation of all key stakeholders. We refer you to our written submission for examples of such programs, and studies demonstrating their benefits.

The Commission has seen evidence that medications are a growing portion of total health care costs. However, it is important for the Commission to recognize that patented prescription medicine costs account for less than 6 cents for every dollar spent on national healthcare. And though spending on pharmaceuticals is increasing, it is also important to understand that it is the utilization of medications and the aging of the population that is behind this trend. Provincial governments currently spend two-thirds of their drug budgets on patients over 65 years of age. And the governments own studies have shown that annual price changes of medications do not play a significant role in driving expenditures. In fact, prices of patented medicines have shown an average annual decrease since 188.

We must all recognize the global natures of the economy and health. The innovative pharmaceutical industry operates within a world market, and makes a substantial contribution to both health and the economy. With current Canadian government initiatives focused on both health and innovation, Rx&D is in a key strategic position to contribute to both agendas. The private business sector remains the largest single contributor to health-related research and development investment in Canada. We employ a highly educated workforce and support nearly 5,000 direct academic positions. Our companies invested approximately $1 billion in research and development in Canada in 001.

The Canadian and provincial governments, as well as our citizens, will continue to benefit from the contributions of the pharmaceutical industry so long as government policies take into account the interrelationship between industrial and health policy.

As we move forward, cooperation and partnerships to encourage the development and use of medications that will enhance the lives of Canadians must be sought. The human genome project promises to unlock a myriad of secrets about disease, prevention and treatment, and we should pursue this knowledge in a cooperative venture to ensure the information is used ethically and wisely.

Rx&D is fully prepared to partner with the federal, provincial and territorial governments, as well as other health care stakeholders, to implement the necessary reform and create the best health care system for Canadians. In doing so, we need to be turning our collective attention to supporting the development of new innovative medicines and ensuring their appropriate use to achieve the best possible patient outcomes. Encouraging innovation, removing access barriers to proven therapies, monitoring the outcomes of medication use, and keeping the patient at the focus of all these efforts are all principles worth pursuing in our quest to provide the best health care for the most people at the best cost, and ensure a bright future for health care in Canada.

Thank you Commissioner Romanow and members of the Commission for your attention. We would be pleased to answer any questions you may have.

Ethanol; A Benefit for All and a Solution to Air Pollution

College papers on Ethanol; A Benefit for All and a Solution to Air Pollution

There are many benefits for production and use of ethanol as an alternative to gasoline in cars. The benefits stretch beyond helping the environment and go all the way to improving the economies of the communities that produce and use ethanol. The United States and many other countries are taking advantage of ethanol, and while the U.S. uses over $1.6 billion gallons a year, some countries such as Brazil have over 40% of the cars on the roads running on 100% ethanol.

The use of gas powered cars is harmful to our environment and air pollution has become a major problem in many larger cities. Cutting down on the use of cars alone is not enough to make a difference. The difference needed to fight air pollution for cars is a cleaner fuel-burning car. Ethanol was developed as an alternative to petroleum and is derived from plants such as corn, and can also be derived from food and beverage wastes, paper sludge, and yard clippings. Ethanol burns cleaner and is very safe for your car. The U.S. uses a blend of 10% Ethanol, and 0% gasoline, and many cars are being developed to sustain burning higher percentages of ethanol. The use of the ethanol blend will help your car start better in cold weather by acting as natural anti-freeze. Ethanol also cleans out your fuel system, and wont leave any waxy deposit build-ups. Although gas mileage is decreased by %, that is only a small price to pay for a better fuel-burning car.

All of the materials involved in producing ethanol are all replenishable and the world will never run out, unlike our limited supply of fossil fuels. The farmers of America will benefit from the use of corn to produce fuel. Using corn increases the value of every bushel of corn by 0 cents. The small number adds up to a net farm income increase by about $4.5 billion.

When burned in a car, ethanol produces byproducts that are good for the environment; carbon dioxide is released instead of carbon monoxide witch is harmful to humans. Burning ethanol reduces other pollutants such as oxides of nitrogen, particulate matter, and other volatile organic compounds. The use of Ethanol can reduce the carbon monoxide and toxic emissions by up to 0%.

The United States ethanol industry has grown over the past years and the production and use of ethanol has direct and indirect effect on over 00,000 American jobs. This helps our economy greatly by providing personal and business income. Ethanol has contributed to a savings to the federal budget of about $.6 billion annually, by decreasing the need for farm program payments, and an increases tax revenue.

The production and use of ethanol not only creates more American jobs, but it decreases the need for imported oil. The taxes paid on imported oil makes Americans pay much more than the oil is actually worth. With the turmoil occurring between the Middle East and America, the less need for imported oil the better. The use of ethanol would reduce the cost of gasoline for the consumers, and improve the U.S. trade balance by $ billion.

I think that all of the factors involved with using ethanol as an alternative in gas powered cars points to it having a positive impact on our society in terms of the economics, and the environment around us. If we begin to think more on how we can help improve our environment and reduce our air pollution, more solutions can be discovered. Using Ethanol will not solve all of our air pollution problems, but I think that it is a very positive step in the right direction toward bringing awareness to the people and doing something about it. I believe that if we all work together and decide to use better alternatives such as ethanol blended gas to lessen our air pollution, we can and will make a difference.

In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. Kissimmee River System Past and Present Thirty years ago, the Army Corps of Engineers in partnership with the State of Florida began construction of a massive flood control project on the Kissimmee River in south central Florida. The flood control solution was the channelization of the riv The ever widening mutual fund scandal took a troublesome turn yesterday when fund giant Putnam announced it would dismiss four money managers who were found to have engaged in short-term trading activity for personal gains in funds that they oversaw or were involved in.

In a statement, Boston-based Putnam said that some of this short-term trading, which took place in 000, appears to have been market timing. Market timing, defined as making rapid-fire trades in mutual fund shares to take advantage of short-term developments in the news or inefficiencies in fund pricing, isnt illegal. But many fund companies tell shareholders that they prohibit or restrict such behavior, as it ends up costing other shareholders in those funds.

Meanwhile, in a related but separate matter, Massachusetts securities regulators are reportedly on the verge of filing a civil complaint against Putnam, stemming from a different market-timing issue. This one involves allegedly improper trading by a handful of 401(k) participants in plans run by Putnam.

What makes this latest wrinkle in the fund scandal so worrisome isnt just that its Putnam, the nations fifth-largest fund company and one of the most recognizable brands in the industry. Its that fund managers are now being drawn into the scandal.

Up until recently, the vast majority of employees who have been fired or disciplined in this scandal have been brokers or fund executives, not portfolio managers. In fact, before this Putnam news, only one other fund manager was drawn into the scandal. Late last month, Alliance Capital, another large fund company, was forced to suspend a technology-fund manager because of internal investigations into improper trading practices.

In a strange way, this has insulated the industry from the growing scandal. After all, even if some employees were found to have been striking deals with fat-cat investors for special privileges, companies could at least claim that fund managers were still on the side of individual investors. But now, with the Putnam revelation, that argument gets thrown out the window. No longer is it a given that fund managers are looking out for shareholders interest first. If more fund managers are drawn into this scandal, this could be a bigger matter?and a bigger threat to investor trust?than was initially thought.

It all began for me in 1755. There was a large-scale introduction of African slave labor in the Caribbean for sugar production and the New World was rising and was in dire need of cheap labor. I was a mere seventeen at the time, experiencing the wonderful feeling of being a teenager. I had heard of our people being forced to get on big ships and sent to the Americas, but I never thought I would come to face it in my lifetime. I had no worries. Until one night, I was asleep and I heard yelling and shots outside. I went out to see what was going on and before I could resist I was shackled by two big, white men. I was still in a daze from being awoken in the middle of the night, so I had no idea what was going on. I can only remember being thrown into a huge, dark, open space at the very bottom of a ship with more than 00 other men, women, and children. I was scared for my life. I hadn't been on a boat before; I had only seen them on the coast. I got very sick and Closter phobic standing there with people I didn't know. Women were crying, babies and children screamed. No one had any idea of why this was happening or where we were being taken. We all had thoughts in our minds of the stories we heard of slavery, but none wanted to face the reality that it was actually happening to us. I learned later that we were a part of the 'Atlantic Slave Trade;' the buying and selling of Africans for work in the Americas. I was part of the estimated .5 million Africans that were transported from their homes to become slaves until the trade ended in 1870.

The triangular trade was the trade between Africa, the Americas, and Europe. Slaves, ivory and other goods were brought to the Americas on large vessels. From the Americas; gold, silver, cotton, tobacco, sugar, molasses, and rum were brought to Europe. In exchange for slaves, sometimes the Europeans would give Africa cloth for clothing and weapons such as guns or cannons. Many other manufactured goods were transported throughout this trade route, too many to account for and name. The Middle Passage was the leg of the slave triangle that brought the human cargo from West Africa to North America, South America, and the Caribbean. All I knew was I was a part of this trade, as if I meant nothing to the people who bought and sold me. As if I was an animal or piece of clothing. I was treated so badly in the Middle Passage sometimes I wished I were an animal. Maybe then I wouldn't get such treatment. We had buckets to do our business in, maybe six for the hundred that were in the ship. The smell was too much to bear. We were given close to no food. I had been hungry before, my family didn't have much money, but never in my life did I feel this much pain from starvation. The most awful site about the voyage through the Middle Passage was the deaths. We were locked in the belly of the ship, chained together like animals throughout the long voyage from Africa to unknown destinations. The average voyage took from five to twelve weeks. Millions died from the awful conditions in the bowels of the filthy slave galleys. All suffering as they died. I'd wish myself to die at times, thinking it was the best thing for me. This suffering was too much to handle for many; death was their only option. Diseases spread all through the ship. I was lucky enough to avoid the worst of it. However, as many died, no one cleared the bodies away. The dead were left to rot in front of our eyes. It wasn't rare to find a living person chained together to a dead body, it was horrific and traumatizing to all who witnessed this. I prayed to the Lord that it would all end soon. Yet, I wondered what was in store for me. If this was how they treated us now, what would become of us when we got to our destination? I could have never guessed.

Despite the miserable conditions, inadequate space and food, deadly diseases, and the violence we received from the crewmembers of the ship, millions of African captives survived, demonstrating their strength and implacable will. I myself was sold to a widely known plantation owner and his wife, along with 50 other of my people. They already had over 100 slaves on their cotton plantation, but business was booming and they needed much more labor. For my social class, I was educated well. Many didn't know how to read or write. I had the basic learning abilities. I could talk in complete sentences and write letters or read simple articles, so I understood when the white man called us names and talked about how uneducated and stupid we all were. I wanted badly to speak up and let them know I wasn't dumb, but I was too afraid. The Adam's plantation was huge. The house must have had 1,000 rooms. I had never seen anything of this sort in my eighteen years of living. I was strong and young so I was told to do many of the hard labor jobs. Some mornings, I was so weak that I could barely walk. We were forced to sleep on the hard, wooden floors of the old farmhouse. We were given scraps for food. Many of the slaves went through the garbage of the family to find more food. They were beaten if found. I didn't receive many beatings. Once I was carrying the groceries from town into the house. I was on the plantation for many months before I had the luxury of seeing the inside of the mansion. I never again was never again able to witness the beauty, for I made eye contact and smiled at the plantation owner's young wife. He immediately grabbed me be the arm, making me drop the bags and beat me as I'd never been beaten before. Right there in front of the misses. He told me I was to never look at any white folk in the eyes again. He told me that I was nothing, that I wasn't a person. After he whipped me, I was brought to the side of the house by his two sons and beaten again. I wasn't able to walk for weeks. I had to hide so I wouldn't be beaten again for not working. I will never forget that, and I was never touched by a white man again. I made sure I did was I was told and kept my head down.

I was complimented by the other women slaves and told that I was a handsome man. I had never had a companion to love. When I began to watch the mistress in the garden, I felt things I never had before. I was 0 that year. I remember celebrating my man hood one summer night. A couple guys stole liquor from the master's bar. The bottle of liquor tasted revolting to me, but I made me feel good, so I continued to drink the entire bottle on my own. I had never drunk before. And after that night, never again. I woke up feeling the worst I had felt since my beating. That taught me to stay away from alcohol, just as the beating taught me to respect the whites. I learned the mistress' name late that year. May Adams. She was the most beautiful white woman I had ever seen, and much younger than the master. She was his fifth wife, and was not very happy. I was hauling barrels filled with water the first time we spoke. She said hello to me. I didn't acknowledge her, I was very afraid. I didn't want the master or his sons to see me with her. I did the only thing I could do; run. I avoided her the next weeks. She found me in the tomato patch one early evening. She told me to meet her behind the barn after the lights were turned out. I did what I was told. When I got there, she was wearing her nightgown. The moon shone on her and made her look like and angel. I was confused, for I never had been paid this much attention to by a white person. She immediately pulled me close to her and put her lips on mine. I was terrified. I pushed her away, into the side of the barn. She looked at me as if I had put a knife through her heart. She began to cry. I didn't know what to do. I put my arms around her and tried to comfort her. She wouldn't stop crying, her cries became loud. She was mumbling words, saying no one loved her, that she was ugly. I tried to soothe her, until I heard men calling her name. I ran to hide. I watched from the woods as they found her and brought her into the house. We never spoke again.

As time went on, it was painful to force myself back into the agonizing past. I will never forget what happened to me and my people. We were tortured and beaten, treated worse than animals. I've seen the worst that man can do to man. I've seen true hatred. And as I look ahead to the years beyond my life, I see much more hate and pain suffered by those whose family went through the slave trade. I see those searching for relief, only to find the same things in different forms happening in the present, in America, the richest country in the world. Hurt is felt, suffering occurs, racism and ignorance is directed towards those different from you. Slavery brought all this and more to our future. It ruined our destiny to have a perfect world, be a perfect country. Greed, the need to be better than someone else, it will occur in years to come. Slavery will never be erased or forgotten. The lives lost and the suffering of our ancestors will forever be a part of us and will shape our lives to make us who we are. Nothing will ever change that; nothing will ever make it better.

There are many different cultures in the world today. What makes up a culture is different for every group. Culture is the specific learned norms based on attitudes, routine behaviors, dominant values and shared beliefs. Culture is often based on long standing traditions that have been passed from generation to generation. It can be evolved through societal and religious influences. Changing culture would almost be impossible because it is in every society in every country today.

I always thought that people act and behave the way they do because they were born that way. It never occurred to me that their beliefs and actions could be caused by the things that surround them and in turn, makes them who they are. I experience different forms of culture everyday of my life. Tacit models and Rules are two important aspects of culture that affect me daily.

Tacit models are a big feature that my family follows. My mother and father have brought us up to respect our elders and peers, speak with politeness, and always use our manners. I feel that these are very ethical ideas to follow and my parents brought us up to be very respectable young adults. I see other children and adults daily that have not been brought up with such patterns of behavior and I think it is disturbing. The lack of respect for elderly and the rudeness that comes out of their mouths is a disgrace. I also see older adults, at the Nursing Home that I work at, and their manners are very bad also. I take offense a lot of times when I do something for them and they can't even say thank you. I guess it has become second nature for me to always say thank you. Because of the way I was brought up, I feel that it shows disrespect not to say thank you if someone does something to help you out. Tacit models is just one of the patterns that I use because of the culture I was brought up in.

Rules are the other feature of culture that my family follows. Growing up with six family members, my mother, father, and three sisters, rules were a big part of holding our family together. I don't mean strict rules, but common everyday rules that we had to follow. For instance we had to make sure our job of the day was done before we could go out and play. This was to insure that our house was kept nice and clean, and that we all did a share of the 'dirty work'. I feel that the rules that we followed were very easy and helped our family become the responsible and helpful family we are today.

As the famous historian Marc Blauch said "Chidren are more alike to its epoch than to its parents". Considering this, I am convinced that there is a strong link between a generation and the time this generation lives in. Adults used to be the leading force in a society, however some decades ago, the youth's ideas start ruling. In these times, we can consider the youth as a good sample to understand our contemporary culture. The way the youth thinks, acts and expresses helps us understand the way our culture behaves. I am supporting my position by considering the following points

· Historical approach

· Social impact

· My personal experience

Cheap research paper on The most effective way to undestand contemporary culture is to analyze the trends of its youth

As a person deeply interested in history, I have read several books of the famous historian Marc Blauch. One that I found particularly interesting is " The evolution of men". In this book Blauch, analyzes how each generation has more things in common with its peers than with its parents. Blauch puts as an example an American family in the decade-160s, where the daughter and son are quite liberal and revolutionary, while the parents are very conservative. One particular aspect where he found this to be more evident is with the music each member of the family prefered. The children love The Beatles, while the parents rather prefer Frank Sinatra. So, if we had to choose between the parents or the children to understand the contemporary culture of the sixties, definetely we would have chosen the children, as they are more representative if that epoch.

The youth has participated in almost every major revolution that has taken place in the world. Last year I traveled to Hungary where I met Ana Prosineki, Director of the Hungarian Center for Culture Studies. She told me that in recent studies that the center has conducted they have found that everyday young people influence elder people. One very intresting study was about how children, ages 7 to 16, influence the way the parents dress. Ana told me that this phenomenon was very interesting for Hungarian Dress Industry, the biggest in the country, because with the results of this study they determined to redesign a their existing line of clothes for adults, ages 45 to 65, which was very conservative and dull. They redesigned it to look very similar in colors and style with the line for young people, ages 16 -5.

I would like to relate my personal experience as a member and active player of my generation. The best example to describe how youth has participated and changed the world of today is the Internet. It is amazing how a bunch of undergraduates help build and designed the software that made Internet accessible for everybody. More spectacular is the fact that some of the most powerful companies of the Internet era were founded and are currently run by young people. Back in 16 and 17 when the Internet was introduced massively in Mexico I decided I want to participate in it. So I bought a book at amazon.com, my first ever Internet transaction, on programming web pages "Learning HTML in 4 hours". I was amazed with the book, learning HTML code was not that hard and that meant that I could build pages for everybody else. I bought my own web domain www.zatun.com and founded my construction and design web site. Today I run a very successful and trendy Internet era company.

With all this in mind I strongly believe that the youth is the primary engine of contemporary culture. Now more than ever young people are making more and more decisions that help shape the world.

There are three types of skills managers use to perform functions in management. The three managerial skills that are essential to successful management are technical, human, and conceptual skills. When achieving organisational goals, managers need these key management skills in order to understand and perform their functions, which are planning, organising, leading, and controlling. 'Management is an ongoing activity, entails goal attainment, and involves knowing how to perform management's major functions.' (Bartol, K., Martin, D., Tein, M. and Matthews, G., 000, Management, A Pacific Rim Focus, rd Edn, McGraw-Hill Sydney, pg. 5)

The function of planning is deciding the best method or plan to achieve organisational goals. The function of organising concentrates on using and allocating organisations resources, such as staff and non-human resources, so that plans can be carried out. Leading involves influencing employees to engage in the work behaviors required to reach organisational goals, and managers control organisational activity so that performance harmonizes to expected organisational missions. Managers routinely perform all of these functions, regardless of their level of hierarchy in the organization. However, managers also routinely perform the technical, human, and conceptual skills to create and maintain the internal environments of organisations.

To carry out a task or procedure, it is necessary for managers to have the knowledge of techniques and understanding of the organisation's field of interest. A technical skill is the ability to use knowledge, methods, techniques, and equipment necessary for the performance of specific tasks. Marketing, E-business, technical skills, analytical skills, decision-making skills, problem-solving skills are only a few examples of technical skills that managers all around the world acquire. It is also a sound knowledge of management theories, and the abilities to apply the theories practically in the place of work. This skill may be acquired from experience, education and training. When made evident that tasks are effectively accomplished according to plan, technical skills are used.

To reach organisational goals as a team, managers lead employees to work towards their aim. Therefore, human skills are needed in order to control and motivate the workers. The ability of judgment for working with and through people is vital for managers to understand whether or not tasks are being accomplished. Developed human skills are observant in advantages and disadvantages of certain attitudes, assumptions, and beliefs in themselves, other individuals and groups in relation to the organisation. Case problems and improvised role-playing can effectively assist in the development of human skills, and self-examining personal concepts and values support the growth of useful attitudes towards him and others. Examples of human skills are delegating skills, leadership skills, negotiation skills, recruitment and selection, communication skills, mentoring and coaching skills, staff training and motivation.

Write my paper on OUTLINE THREE MAJOR TYPES OF MANAGERIAL SKILLS for me

'It is common for many organisations to undergo restructuring in their human resources and personnel functions to ensure that the right people with the right human skills are at every level in the Department.' (UK Government Changes at the Home Office; Top management focus on delivery, M Presswire, Coventry, February 00)

Conceptual skill involves the ability to see the organisation as a whole, to identify how different functions in the organisation depend on one another, and to associate the organisation with the outside world. Managers analyse and diagnose important issues or patterns in complex situations. Training, coaching, guiding and assigning responsibilities allows managers to be aware of their internal environment, which can also strengthen and develop their conceptual abilities. To act according to the objectives of the total organisation rather than only on the basis of the goals and needs of ones immediate work group, managers must understand the complexities of the overall organisation and where ones own operation fits in the organisation. With this skill, they are able to construct strategy-making processes to approach existing and new opportunities that may benefit their organization.

In assisting to planning their goal, managers should acquire knowledge and be kept informed of new information relating to their organisation's field of interest. Managing Director of Janata Bank Murshid Kuli Khan believes that 'to meet the requirements of the customers of the 1st century, Executives conceptual skills should be enriched by acquiring knowledge in specific business areas, for example e-business.' (Bankers urged to acquire knowledge on e-commerce, The Independent, September 00)

The three managerial skills, technical skill, human skill, and conceptual skill apply at all hierarchy levels of management. The hierarchy levels are the basis of two main dimensions. One is the vertical dimension, which is the managerial level of the organisation that includes the first-level, middle-level, and top-level managers. The other is the horizontal dimension, which are the variations in managers' task and responsibility. However, the use of management skills varies in the vertical dimension of the hierarchy, as different levels of management require different amounts of skills.

Generally, the first-level managers need the greatest amount of technical skills, as they are responsible for day-to-day operations in pursuit of their goals. They are directly responsible for the work of operating and supervising technical and professional employees. However, technical skills decreases as managers move up the hierarchy levels for the reason that managers are moving away from people that are performing the technical work of the organisation.

Conceptual skills are the lowest amount of skill required for first-level managers. Yet, this is variable if strategic management responsibilities are delegated down from higher-level managers.

The decrease amount of technical skills for the middle-level managers is due to the fact that they are more distant from the technical employees. Middle-level managers implement the goals of top managers and co-ordinate the work of first-line managers. They also set tactical objectives, which focus on departmental issues and describe the results necessary to achieve organisation's strategic goals. Therefore, there is an increase in conceptual skills.

For the top-level managers, conceptual skills are the largest and most important skill required. These managers have the most power and take overall responsibility for the organisation. To stay ahead of competition, top-level managers set strategic goals that focus on broad issues and apply to the organisation as a whole.

In contrast, there is the smallest amount of technical skills required for the top-level management. Although top managers are furthest away from the technical day-to-day operations, it is vital that they have some technical knowledge of their organisation's products and services.

Naturally, all three levels of management require the same amount of human skills. To understand other employees, work effectively with them, and to get them to work together as a team is the effectiveness of this skill. Managers must establish good relationships with people internally and externally from the organisation.

Principles of good management are generally uniformed in both profit making and non-profit organisations. Management success is gained through accomplishment of mission and objectives. As managers perform their role and execute management functions, the three skills are routinely exercised. With the specific technical skills, they are able to reflect both an understanding of and accomplish daily tasks in their organisation's specialised field. To accomplish tasks through people internally or externally, managers must have strong communication skills to be able to develop relationships. This human skill allows managers to recognize different mixes in the skills according to the environment, which also allows them to lead and control activities to reach expected goals.

Although all three management skills are important at all three levels of management, conceptual skills become relatively more important at the top-level of management. They need the ability to visualize their organisation as a whole, and understand how they fit into the wider industry.

Nevertheless, throughout the organisation managers of different level requires different amount of technical skills, and conceptual skills to function effectively, but all require the same amount of human skills. 'All effective leaders have some technical, human relations, and conceptual skills, but leaders may vary considerably in their styles.' (Jordan, Debra J, Leadership styles Which one is right for you? The Camping Magazine; Martinsville; Mar 16)
