Schools of Thought in Psychology

The ideas of psychology are changing everyday. The study of the human mind and how it operates is actually a relatively new idea. There are many different area of psychology, a general grouping are the schools of thought. Most psychologists specialize in a particular area or particular school of thought. Each school of thought has its own area in psychology that is focused on. When all these ideas are brought together we begin to understand more and more the world of psychology as a whole.

The first area of psychology to be developed is structuralism. Structuralism was developed by Wilhelm Wundt when he was able to break down the contents of the mind into basic units like the basic elements of matter in chemistry. Which is where the name structuralism came from. Structuralism focuses on the conscious part of the human mind. As time progressed structuralism was replaced by other approaches, and the conscious experience was not even considered a legitimate subject of psychology.

The new study that structuralism became is known as cognitive psychology. Cognative psychologists are not interested in the structure of the conscious; instead, they study higher mental processes. Thinking, knowing, and deciding have become some of the areas that cognative psychologists study. Cognative study is just one example of psychology developing into something more advanced.

Gestalt psychology is another school of thought based on the human thought process as a whole and not on an individual. I find this area to be more useful in psychology, especially when trying to study thoughts and behaviors of humanity. How can we look at a single persons psychi and make general statements concerning all people? Perception is one of the most important tools used in Gestalt psychology. This might seem to acheive general answers, but actually just perception alone one can draw some of the most important conclusions.

These are just a few of the areas in the schools of thought. Every day the names, ideas, and tools used in each school are growing and changing. As with the rest of the world, as time goes on psychology will change and we will learn more. Whether studying the structures of thought or thought in general as a whole we will always learn more and there will always be more to learn.

e Origins of World War One

Events leading up to the outbreak of War

(a) Moroccan Crisis 105-106

The Germans wanted to test the recently signed Anglo French 'Entente Cordiale' with its understanding that France would recognise Britain position in Egypt in return for British approval of a possible French takeover of Morocco. Germany said that they would assist the Sultan to maintain independence. A conference was held in Ageciras in Spain. Britain believed that if Germany had their way it would be an important step on the road to German diplomatic domination. Spain supported the French demand to control the Moroccan bank and police. This was a serious defeat for Germany who realised the Britain and France were a force to be reckoned with as the conference was soon followed by Anglo French 'military conversation'

(b) The British Agreement with Russia 107

This was seen by Germany as a hostile move but really it was a logical step as in 184 Russia signed an agreement with France, For years Russia had bee n seen by Britain as a threat to her interests in the Far East and in India but Russia had become weakened by their war against Japan (104-105. which they lost) Russia were willing and eager to attract British investment for their industrial modernization programme. It was not a military alliance.

(c) The Bosnia Crisis

This incident really heightened tension between the powers. The Austrian annexed the Turkish province of Bosnia. This was a deliberate blow at the neighbouring state of Serbia who had been hoping to take Bosnia as it contained about three million Serbs. Russia called for a European conference; they expected the support of Britain and France. When it became clear that Germany would support Austria Hungary in the event of a war, France pulled. The British merely protested, as they were not willing to risk a war. With out the support of her Allies Russia didn't dare enter was.

The results of this was

Ø Serbia became bitterly hostile toward Austria Hungary.

Ø Russia embarked on a massive military build up

(d) Again Crisis (111)

French troops occupied the Fez to put down a rebellion against the Sultan. It looked as though France were about to annex Morocco. The Germans sent a gunboat The Panther' to the Moroccan port of Agadir. Britain was concerned that Germany may obtain Agadir and subsequently threaten Britain trade routes. The British Chancellor of the Exchequer) made a speech warning the Germans off. The French stood firm. Germany agreed to recognise the French protectorate over Morocco in return for two strips of territory in the French Congo

.

(e) The First Balkan War

Serbia, Greece, Montenegro and Bulgaria attacked Turkey capturing most of her remaining territory in Europe. British foreign secretary Sir Edward Grey arranged a Peace Conference in London. He was anxious to avoid the conflict spreading and prove that Britain and Germany could still work together. The settlement divided up the Turkish lands between the Balkan states. The Serbs were not happy they wanted Albania which would give them an outlet to the sea but the Austrians wanted to keep Serbia weak and demanded Albania become independent.

(f) The Second Balkan War 11

This began because Bulgaria was not happy with the Peace Settlement. They were hoping for Macedonia but most of it was given to Serbia. They attacked Serbia. Serbia supported by Greece, Romania and Turkey. Bulgarians were defeated and by The Treaty of Bucharest they forfeited most of their gains from the first war. The Austrians wanted to support Bulgaria but the Anglo French influence was strong.

The Consequence of these wars were

Ø Germans took Greys willingness to cooperate as a sigh that Britain would detach from her Allies.

Ø Serbia was strengthened and determined to achieve her objective of uniting all Pan Slav people under one leader.

Ø Austria were even more determined to put an end to Serbia's ambitions in the Balkans

Pearl Harbor was the straw that broke the camels back. This surprised attack which claimed the lives of civilians, soldiers, marines, and thousands of sailors forced the United States to go through the doors of its neutral home and into a world of war. By taking advantage of America?s deficiencies, misconceptions, and speculative theories the Japanese task that was made easy. Luckily it was not a total success for the Japanese, even though America still lost many fighters who put their lives on the line for their country they gained the knowledge from the lesson that they learned that day.

In 1 a man named Adolph Hitler was given the title Chancellor of Germany which he change the following year and adopted the title of Fuehrer, which means ?all-powered leader,? and set out to build the peoples desire for expansion and the establishment of a ?New Order? in Europe. In September 140 Germany, Italy, and Japan announced to the whole world that they had signed a treaty of alliance which provided political, economic, and military assistance to each other. It was also established that the leadership of Germany and Italy had a goal to form a ?New Order? in Europe, and the leadership of Japan had a goal to form a ?New Order? in the Greater East Asia. But these countries soon want to expand this ?New Order? to rest of the world and the only way to accomplish this is by taking out America quickly and silently.

The only thing that was standing in their way for the moment was the Pacific Fleet and a place called Pearl Harbor which was so close that they could reach out and touch them. Pearl Harbor was believed to be a mighty fortress of defense. Together with the Pacific Fleet, Hawaii was considered to be unassailable by outsiders. Compared to other prospective enemies the Pacific Fleet was assumed to be an unstoppable force. Some high ranking personnel of the State department had faith that if things got to a level where war was the only way to go that the sea forces of Japan could be defeated in a few weeks. But we all know that something of that magnitude could only be seen in the movies. Prior to the Japanese attack the Pacific Fleet had a total of 15 vessels but the Atlantic fleet, who had most of the vessels because they were actually more active than the Pacific Fleet at the time, had 4 vessels. But if we exclude the smaller vessels it would Pacific Fleet 111 and Atlantic Fleet 188. The Pacific had nine of the fifteen battleships and most of the modern submarines, but in May of 141 three battleships, an aircraft carrier, four cruisers, and nine destroyers were detached from the Pacific Fleet and sent to the Atlantic Fleet for duty. Even though the Fleet seemed to be formidable it was realized by many that the Japanese fleet was significantly stronger. All the ships of the fleet were not in Pearl Harbor or were not in operating condition, for some required material improvement work. But during the eighteen months that the Pacific fleet was at Pearl Harbor great progress was made in training the sea forces for possible warfare and in improving the conveniences of the new base.

The majority of the people did not believe that Pearl Harbor was threaten by Japanese and felt that they would go else were in order to accomplish there goal in establishing a ?New Order.? Some felt Japan would go north to Russia since I was a region that was desired by the Japanese Army, but Russia was unconquered by Germany and Japan did not want to make that country an enemy a that point. But the way that information was gathered about Pearl Harbor and the fleet was what was on everyone?s mind. Information received from the Japanese after Pearl Harbor shows that their precise observations and intelligence kept them well informed of the security of Hawaii and the activities of the Pacific Fleet. In our open democratic society Japanese agents were free to observe fleet activities, take photographs with high-powered equipment, and to solicit almost any information desired. Any person could roam the hills around Pearl Harbor or other areas of Hawaii and observe the coming and witness the comings and goings of each ship and what their schedule seemed to be. It was even possible for people to find information about defense measures, such as torpedo nets and anti-aircraft guns. It was even said that one espionage officer in the Japanese Consulate has rent an aircraft and flown over Hawaii military bases on a consistent basis. If you are able to receive information that easily then it must have been just as easy to attack the bases. The spy ring that was present in Hawaii was very effective. Reports about the movement of vessels at the harbor and the activities around the base were sent regular to Tokyo from the Consulate at Honolulu. Information like air reconnaissance, defense measures, and troop movements were just some of the information being sent across the seas. But there is no way that all these transmissions did raise a brow especially when these transmissions came in shorter intervals as December 17 started to creep up.

Rumors started to fly that the Japanese could be planning an attack against Pearl Harbor. But there were so many rumors about other possible targets that the rumor about Pearl Harbor seemed to far-fetched. Then the proximity of hostile action pointed to attacks in the Western Pacific area. But it seemed to be little probability that the initial attack could be against Pearl Harbor, at least this is what the American officials felt about the situation. July 141 Hawaii was warned of the tense situation cause by the Japanese occupation of South Indo-China and the United States imposition of and prohibition on trade with Japan. When General Tojo took over the government as Premier in October 141, the Hawaiian commands and other Pacific commands were again advised of the seriousness of the situation in the Pacific. A new security order which superseded the security order which was already in effect was issued by Admiral Kimmel the Commander-in-Chief of the Pacific Fleet during the attacks on Pearl Harbor.

Husband E. Kimmel was born in Henderson, Kentucky, on 6 February 188 and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 104. Before reaching flag rank, he served in several battleships, commanded two destroyer divisions, a destroyer squadron and USS New York (BB-4). He also held a number of important positions on flag staffs and in the Navy Department, and completed the senior course at the Naval War College. In February 141 he became Commander in Chief, U.S. Fleet and Pacific Fleet, with the temporary rank of Admiral. Operating from the advanced base at Pearl Harbor, Kimmel led his fleet during the months of vigorous training that preceded the outbreak of the Pacific War. Relieved of his fleet command in mid-December 141, he was then demoted to Rear Admiral. Many people feel that he was the main reason for the people of Pearl Harbor not being on alert. It was said that he had information that he did not reveal to his subordinates and because of that something that could have been a little confrontation turned into a massacre.

The purpose of the attack on Pearl Harbor was to sink or cripple large units so the Pacific Fleet would immobilized and the Japanese would be able to invade the Philippines Islands, the East Indies, and improve the defense of the Mandates. By doing this it would make the United States think twice before they would fight an enemy so far from home. The attack on Pearl Harbor was played over and over on a game-board and each time showed a successful attack with a maximum loss of about one-third of the Japanese force. Aviators were trained to drop torpedoes from very low altitudes and they were trained to use high-level planes and diving planes in order to defeat nets around major ships. This attack was conceived by Admiral Isoruku Yamamoto, the Commander-in-Chief of the Japanese Combined Fleet.

In 105 Admiral Yamamoto studied at Harvard University 11-11. One of the major advocates of Japanese naval aviation, as Commander of the 1st Fleet, and was responsible for the many Japanese naval successes in the opening months of the Pacific War. Ironically, he was opposed to going to war with the United States, which he knew would be a more dangerous opponent than many Japanese imagined. However, once the decision to go to war had been made, he supported it in spite of his doubts. His bold plans for the opening moves of the war worked far better than he had expected; but his second campaign, to finish off the U.S. Pacific Fleet, ended in disaster at Midway. Thereafter, he operated on the defensive, waiting for a chance to strike another crippling blow, but that chance never came. He was killed in 14, when USAAF P-8 fighters intercepted the bomber carrying him on an inspection tour of forward bases.

Great Expectations

Have you ever wondered how wealth can bring happiness and how it can change a person which poses the question, can it turn that person who was once poor into a better person?

The plot of Great Expectations revolves around Pip as a young boy and his chance encounter on the Kent marshes with an escaped convict, Magwitch. It follows Pip's journey through to adulthood and gives insight into the attitudes about the social conditions and snobbery at the time when Dickens was writing and what his views of them were.

It is a compelling novel of guilt, desire, ambition, greed and reconciliation and finally realising the true value of money, friendship and love.

When Pip and Magwitch first meet, their relationship appears to be based solely on power and fear. Upon seeing the convict Pip describes him as 'a fearful man' and during their short conversation, Pip sits 'trembling' showing his fear.

The man threatens the boy so that he can get what he wants and Pip seemingly obliges only to save his life. The convict manhandles him and repeatedly threatens him.

However, when they split up Pip keeps his gaze on him and the reader gets the impression that they are strikingly similar the image of the man 'still hugging himself in both arms' alone on the horizon, and also lonely not that different to the young boy Pip, who just minutes before he'd met the convict had been sat alone, looking longingly at his relatives gravestones. They share a common loneliness and both seem somewhat removed from society.

Pip comes across as a sympathetic, kind boy. His home life was rather unsettled as a young boy but his older sister Mrs Joe and her husband Joe take him in and become his guardians. Pip finds solace from his sister's rages in Joe and their relationship is more that of dear friends than surrogate father and son. Pip is reasonably happy with his life, as he knows no different and is unable to compare his situation… until he is called upon to visit Miss Havisham.

One day, Mr. Jaggers, a lawyer, reveals to Pip, that there are "Great Expectations" for Pip. He is given the money to become a gentleman and receive a good education; he assumes, without questioning that his benefactor is Miss Havisham. In London, Pip makes many new, high-society friends. After spending a while living there, Pip is happily settled in, still longing for Estella but enjoying spending time with his good friend Herbert, until his emotions are thrown into turmoil when his benefactor appears before him.

The atmosphere of the day when they meet seems fitting, the 'wretched weather' -soon to match Pip's disgust, almost as if the 'vast heavy veil' of terrible weather had dragged Magwitch with it, right to Pip's door. Pip surveyed his visitor with a slight air of distaste, he didn't like the man being overly friendly when he was still unsure as to who he was and what business they had together.

On second glances Pip finally realises who the strange man is but feels that he isn't under any obligation to him and simply tells him in no uncertain terms 'That I cannot wish to renew that chance intercourse with you of long ago, under these different circumstances.' Pip then makes it blatantly obvious that he doesn't want Magwitch in his house. This affects the man and Pip tries to smooth things over and makes polite conversation. Pip remembers about the £ that he was given as a child and he tries to pay him off by giving him two clean pound notes, but straightaway Magwitch burns them because he is offended that Pip is trying to get rid of him in this way. This is ironic as Pip doesn't realize that he is trying to pay off Magwitch, with Magwitch's own money.

However, when their conversing turns to how Pip became a gentleman, and the shocking truth comes out, Pip is repulsed. His snobbery is very obvious because, instead of gratitude, his attitude is one of total horror and disgust The abhorrence in which I held the man, the dread I had of him, the repugnance with which I shrank from him, could not have been exceeded if he had been some terrible beast.

Pip's emotions are very unstable; he is feeling disappointed, angry and very ashamed he doesn't want to be associated with a poor convict but realises with dread that Magwitch made him who he is, and that he owes him everything. The fact that Magwitch is from a lower class and a common criminal is far more important in Pip's eyes than the fact that Magwitch is a reformed character, now that he's good, honest and genuine. Pip is very hypocritical as he judges Magwitch by his class rather than how he is as a person.

The disappointment is due to the false belief that his benefactor was Miss Havisham and him becoming a gentleman was all part of a plan to groom him for Estella, when really it was nothing of the sort. He seems angry with Miss Havisham, which is unfair as she never told him that she was his benefactor, Pip just assumed it.

He also becomes aware that he has been neglecting Joe in preference for 'expectations' that have been paid for by a convict. Despite his reformed attitude to Joe and Biddy, therefore, it is obvious that Pip is still very much a snob because he does not want his wealthy friends to learn of his low class benefactor. When he had gone back for his sister's funeral in chapter 5, Pip showed a little remorse about his previous snobbishness and showing them that, even though he has become a gentleman, he has not abandoned his roots and still values their friendship. It also indicates that for the first time Pip is beginning to see through outside or superficial appearances to the fine man beneath. However, we learn, though, that he hasn't changed much as he is ashamed when he hears about his benefactor he's angry and snobbish, as to him its only about where his money came from, he can't cope with having "poor" money its undermined his whole idea of his wealth.

Pip displayed a haughty attitude up until the point when he discovered that Magwitch was his benefactor, not Miss Havisham. This single event seems to shatter Pips ever-growing ego and turn him into the true gentleman he wants to be. Magwitch talks about his gratitude for Pip when he helped him as a convict many years ago. You acted noble, my boy, said he. Noble Pip! And I have never forgot it!. He shows why he is a hero when he explains to Pip that he was the benefactor and the one responsible for making him a gentleman and helping him achieve his great expectations. Yes, Pip, dear boy, Ive made a gentleman on you! Its me wot done it!.

This point of change was made only after spending time with Magwitch and realizing how much he was grateful to him and how much Magwitch loved him. Pip stayed true to the end with Magwitch and never abandoned him as shown when Pip states, 'I will never stir from your side... when I am suffered to be near you. Please God, I will be as true to you as you have been to me.' This goes to prove that people can change, but only after they experience love. Pips unconditional love for Magwitch was definite because he had nothing to gain from him. After his death, however, Pip feels guilt and sadness when he learns what Magwitch spent most of his life trying do. Only now does Pip realize how much he has missed in life and how sorry he is for missing it. His apology to Joe and Biddy shows that they are forgiving characters and that Pip is now one of them. Pips acting out of the goodness of his heart demonstrates that deep down inside, he just wants to do the right thing, and mistakenly believed that money would do that.

Dickens seems to be suggesting that there were very clear dividisions between the rich and the poor, and snobbery was very common in the upper classes. Wealth and class are clearly very important to Pip which is unnecessary and heartless which is why he deserts Joe and Biddy. However, being wealthy, Pip had thought that it would bring him closer to the girl he loved, Estella. But it didnt. In return, he had more problems personally then before to face and wasnt enjoying his wealthy life. Wealth brought him to the path of broken love, much like it did with Miss Havisham as her fianc who we meet later in the book, Compeyson, was just going to marry her based on her riches not on love.

I have to admit that I have no sympathy for Pip, as he shouldn't rate people on their class without getting to know them first. He just assumed that the money was from Miss Havisham and that he was being groomed for Estella, as soon as he came into the money, he immediately left his old life behind.

Pip does change immensely during the course of his life, it is quite remarkable how such a kind young country boy can turn into an arrogant pitiful gentleman, and finally ending up in love, happy yet not particularly wealthy.

Do my essay on Goophered Grapevine

· He says it's "goophered" bewitched. Long ago a man named Mars Dugal owned the property. His slaves and slaves from other plantations use to steal his (scuppernons). He would set traps and stay up all night to try and catch them but couldn't.

· Mars visits a woman on the other side of town that is known to have powers. He hires her to protect his grapevines with her powers.

· She does this by taking a grape-twig, seed, dirt, a snakes tooth, speckled hens gall, hair from the tail of a black cat and mixes it in a bottle of wine. She then buries it under an oak tree. She tells the plantation workers that the vines are now goophered and if anyone eats a grape from the vine they will die within 1 months.

· Needless to say, the workers leave the grapes alone in fear they will die. They hear of a few instances where an unknowing child, a man from out of town- eat the grapes and soon die. The next year a field hand dies- assumed he ate some bad grapes.

· Mars buys a new hand {Henry} to replace the deceased one and forgets to tell him about the vineyard hex. He eats some grapes on the sly then was told of the cunjun witch who put a hex over the vineyard. He becomes sick immediately after.

· Mars takes Henry to see Aun' Peggy because he wasn't forewarned. and come back the following spring to see her. He does this and he is instantly healed.

· The following spring he sees her again and she makes him a drink and tells him to rub the sap from the trees on his head and this will also enable him to eat as many grapes as he'd like from the vines.

· When the leaves on the vines begin to grow, so does the hair on his very baldhead. He grows a thick and lavish head of hair. But when the grapes begin to grow, his hair curls up into tight little balls just like the grapes on the vine. By the time the grapes are ready for harvest, he looks as if he has a bunch of grapes on his head.

· Every spring he obediently rubs the sap on his head- and this makes him grow stronger and stronger every year. But in the winters, he has terrible arthritis and his head loses all its hair.

· Mars Dugal notices how each spring Henry turns into a strong and healthy worker. He decides to sell Henry for $1,500 to another plantation owner. However, when winter falls Henry is once again plagued with arthritis.

· Mars buys Henry back for $500 and takes care of him all winter long. (He does this because he knows he can keep selling him in the spring and make a good profit.)

· On the 5th year of doing so, a stranger comes to Mars Dugals plantation and gives him pointers on how to grow an even better vineyard. The advice is bad and Mars almost loses his entire vineyard.

· Dugal decides to keep Henry so he can work on his own plantation. The vines slowly wither and Henry is once again plagued by arthritis. His hair turns a yellow and falls out and soon thereafter Henry dies.

· So the black man telling the story strongly advises the Northern couple against buying the old vineyard. The only reason he is able to eat the grapes is because he can tell the old vines from the newly grown vines and those ones are not hexed.

· The couple ends up buying the old plantation. After they buy it they discover that the black man who told them the tale had been living in an old cabin on the property and had for a long time been selling and profiting from the vineyard.

In the end, he works for the northern couple on their vineyard.

Another important tool that is being used when implementing JIT is the supply chain management. In this process it is important to establish a relationship with the supplier, the supplier's supplier, and the customers. Suppliers and customers become an extension of the company's operation. It is a procedure that will track the product from the supplier warehouse, to the consumer's house.

The implementation of JIT in a business requires many managerial decisions to be made. They must first consider the cost of JIT implementation and the tradeoffs they are willing to make. Management must completely committed to the JIT, abandon any old plan, and lead the organization along the way. They are responsible to prepare the climate for any changes in the organizations' culture.

Traditionally, organizations are arranged in a top-to bottom hierarchical format. Unlike traditional organizational structure, JIT is structured on a team approach with more of a horizontal format.

Education and training are vital to a successful JIT implementation. Like any other new technique, proper training must occur in the early stages. Proper training and understanding of the new technique flows through the following stages

• Upper management education

• middle management, line supervisor, and staff education

• Workers education

• Implementation facilitator education.

Supplementary Material 8 Mile by Peter Hudson

What is the purpose of the film?

The purpose of the critically acclaimed 8 Mile starring controversial rapper Eminem and directed by the well-established Curtis Hanson of 'LA Confidential' fame is to show a white rapper's struggle for respect and survival in the tough side of Detroit, Michigan in the USA. The movie is also a semi-autobiographical piece based on Eminem's life before becoming famous. The film deals with James 'Rabbit' Smith, Jnr's (Eminem) harsh and cold attitude towards life and people in higher roles than himself. The world seems to hate him and he hates it more. The significance of the title 8 Mile is that there is a road in Detroit called 8 Mile Rd and is what separates the rich people from the poor people in the city.

Information about the movie

Being white in a predominantly black neighbourhood is what makes Rabbits acceptance his biggest barrier. Rabbit has dreams of escaping from the harsh side of life and living it up as a mega-rich superstar rapper. Throughout the film Rabbit is promised by Wayne to get a spot in the recording studio and get a chance to record a demo to send out so he can get his rap career started.

The movie opens with Rabbit choking from a rap duel at a local club the 'Chin Tiki', this then gives more fuel to burn to his doubters and his enemies who believe he is nothing. Rabbit deals with change throughout this movie as he learns to understand that he is not more special than the other bums around the neighbourhood, and he conveys this by his quote

"Have you ever thought about saying fk it, and stop living up here (the clouds) and start living down here (reality)".

His friends also fall under the same category of having big dreams and plans but never actually doing it

"Man, thats all we ever do man, is talk st, (mimicking his friends) we need to get fine bitchs and phat (cool) rides, no what we need to do is put our money in savings bonds, no what we need to do is get our songs on J.O.B., man shut the fk up, all of us never do st about nothing, and still broke as fkers and live at home with our moms".

When Rabbit finds his girlfriend, Alex having sex with Wayne (she is using Wayne so she get to bigger things in New York as Wayne supposedly has connections), Rabbit realises that he can't trust anyone and has to do things his way. When he goes home to his mum's trailer (who also lives a fantasy that she is going to fall rich and live happily ever after), his mum asks if he was serious about the demo for his music from Wayne, Rabbit pauses and says

"No, Im gunna do it on my own"

This quote shows the beginning of the change for Rabbit. He also shows further change in himself when he finally shows respect to his boss and realises he has to be nice to him. And in turn his boss finally gives him the extra shifts Rabbit has been asking for. He then realises that he must go duel at the 'Chin Tiki' for respect he has long craved. He takes on the gang, The Freeworld, who bashed him earlier for hitting Wayne, and he wins the duel against of the Freeworld members and finally gets respect. In his final duel, Rabbit finally owns up to the neighbourhood his true life and basically tells them to take it or leave it.

"I am white, I am a fking bum, I do live in a trailer with my mom, my boy, Future is an ugly bum, I do got a jumped friend named Chedda Bomb who shoots himself in the leg with his own gun, I did get jumped by all 6 of you chumps, and Wayne did fk my girl, and Im still standing here saying fk the Freeworld, dont ever try to judge me dude, you dont know what Ive been through (and) I'm a piece of fking white trash, I say it proudly, and fk this battle, I don't wanna win, I'm outtie, (hands the microphone to opponent) now here, tell these people something they don't know about me."

After his duel, Rabbit finally comes full circle and tells his friends he can't party because he has to go back to work, signifying Rabbits complete change and accepts responsibility and learns to work with the system, not go against it or try to get a shortcut.

Eminem gives an outstanding debut performance as Rabbit and well supported by established African-American actor, Mekhi Phifer as Future, Rabbits best friend. Also lending a hand is Oscar winner, Kim Basinger, who plays Rabbit's mother. Curtis Hanson does extremely well to a movie with a simple formula and gives it significant depth with an all-star cast to push it to become an entertaining and somewhat inspirational movie with some critics calling for Oscar nominations especially for Eminem's portrayal. The movie is obviously a star vehicle for Eminem's debut film, but with 10 minutes into the film it is clear that Eminem can act and act very well. The film succeeds in pleasing its audience and gives a climatic ending where Rabbit conquers his doubters and finally learns to do things his way and to do it with honesty and not try to find shortcuts like with Wayne who betrays him.

How is the meaning made? / What techniques does the filmmaker use to communicate his message

• Camera Angles

When Rabbit is being bashed by the gang, The Freeworld, the positioning of camera angles suggests Rabbit's importance in the world with a down-facing angle whereas the members of Freeworld have angles facing upwards showing their dominance over Rabbit and his insignificance in their neighbourhood, this leads us back to the white rapper struggling in the predominantly black neighbourhood.

When Rabbit finishes his final duel and the crowd of the 'Chin Tiki' behind him and his Freeworld opponent chokes, the camera faces up towards Rabbit and down on the Freeworld gang, this shows his new dominance over his rivals and how their status has changed with Rabbit's coming of age.

• Colloquial Language

Although the language throughout the film is very rough, it plays to its intended audience, which is mid-teens to middle-to-late 0's, who use the language presented in the film. The offbeat and often colourful language is realistic to its location, the rough, tough and dark lifestyle of the poorer side of Detroit; to have the language any different or more conservative would not be realistic and present an inaccurate depiction of what life is really like there.

• Music / Rapping

The rapping throughout the movie provided the means of communication for the rappers deeper thoughts and feelings. Such as

o When Rabbit and Future sing along to 'Sweet Home Alabama' they take out the real words and replace them with their life story

Future "Well Jimmy (Rabbit) moved in with his mother, coz he ain't got no place to go"

Rabbit "And now I'm right back in the gutter, with a garbage bag that's full of clothes"

Future "Coz you live at home in a trailer, what the hell you gonna do?

Rabbit "Coz I live at home in a trailer, Mum I'm coming home to you. Well my name's Jimmy, his names Greg Buel, me, you and him all went to the same school, this ain't cool, I'm in a range, he's tapping my mom and we're the same age. On the microphone I drop bombs, look at this car! Thanks a lot Ma!! (Mimicking his mum) Here happy birthday rabbit, a 18 Delta, this st won't even get me to the shelter!"

o When they are standing in line for food at lunchtime at work, they rap about their poor lives and their bad jobs and bad food

"Man, I'm getting so sick and tired of fking with this deal, they only give us 0 minutes to sit down and chill, my body aching, just to get a buck, I'm sick of eating this st out of this fking lunch truck".

o And of course Rabbits final rap duel (transcript above), this shows his inner anguish and he lays it all on the line for the last time and goes back to reality.

• Interaction with other characters Dialogue

One of the main techniques used by the writer, Scott Silver is dialogue along with the rapping. The conversations between Rabbit and his mother showed how much they were alike, despite Rabbit's belief he was better than everyone. "What are you doing with your life thats so great?" is the mum's query to Rabbit who comes back with saying Wayne is getting a demo spot for him however that is after a pause, but the uncertainty in his voice and the pause finally shows that he really isn't sure whether Wayne will come through and help him.

Also Rabbit's conversations with Alex, although they have different dreams and ambitions, Rabbit wants to be a rapper and Alex wants to be a model, they very much mirror each other in the fact they are dreaming and they need to come to reality. Alex is different only in the fact that she will use people to get to where she needs to go, such as sleeping with Wayne whereas Rabbit is willing to wait and see what happens so he doesn't have to put himself out there where he can be put down again.

This short story is a reflective piece as the narrator remembers her childhood experiences, using the symbol of the "washing line" to remind the reader about the

changes in one's life and the strength of memories.

The first person narrator remembers the washing line "first", with its "silver skeletal

arms". This image is the central image of her reminiscence. She describes the garden

Cheap essay writing services offer help on Sky High by Hannah Roberts

surrounding it and the "best climbing tree", which was "festooned with socks and

knickers and shirts". The nostalgic tone is established as we are caught up in her

world of colour and nature as she notes the "almond tree", the nectarine tree's "hard,

bird-bitten fruit" and other flora.

Yet the reader is abruptly moved on in time in with the ambiguous line, "Today,

however, it is bare". At first it seems we have returned to the present but we soon

realise that her thoughts have wandered to another day in her childhood, when she

climbed the washing line and sat in her "exalted position, almost sky-high". Here we

share her feelings of joy and excitement as she surveys the world she knows. The

level of language and sentence structure at this point becomes almost child-like in its

conversational tone, simplicity and matter-of-fact statements, "Three little boys live

there; I have stood on the fence and talked to them, even been in their house once."

The reader becomes caught in the moment with the young girl who is feeling "frilly

and nearly as pink as the bathers" she was wearing. As the narrator describes, in the

present tense and in the voice of the child, her climb "out along one skeletal arm"

until she swings "upside-down" the reader is swept along with her euphoria and

movement. We are captured in the moment as the "earth spins below" her and she is

"flying".

Once again the reader is abruptly moved on to an image of an "older, more agewarped

washing line" that depicts the passage of time since she once soared in the

childhood memory previously described. The image of her hands that have

accumulated "the line-etched story in scars and wrinkles" reinforces the sense of

ageing and nostalgic tone. While the washing line has stood constant in the yard,

changes have occurred and the carefree imagination of the child and will of the child

are tempered by the reality "The inclination is still there . . .but it is unlikely the

washing line could support me this time." The adult world intrudes on her reflection

as she realises how her life and world have changed. She must accept the

responsibilities of adulthood as she is no longer the "curious onlooker" but creates her

own "semaphore secrets" with her washing. She doesn't feel "the sagging wires" and

"spotted metallic arms" could support her and acknowledges it would be a struggle as

"there are too many things tying [her] to the ground." She has matured and accepts

her changed circumstances but still pines for those moments of freedom she

experienced as a child and remembers, symbolised by the washing machine and the

memories it evokes.

This story highlights the passage of time and stages of our life that bring change and

development yet it also evokes the adult nostalgia for the fun, innocence and freedom

of childhood. The title reflects the childhood's whimsical notion of being "sky-high"

on the washing line while the conclusion reflects the realistic image of an adult being

tied to the ground. The young child is fearless, inquisitive and imaginative, acting on

impulse. Her descriptions of her world and people in it are non-judgemental. The

narrator reminds us that as an adult she still feels "a small pilot light burning" but she

rationalises it, preventing herself from responding to a moment of inspiration and

perhaps, even briefly, entering another world one of her youth or alternatively a new

one. The author encourages the reader to consider their own circumstances and

reminisce about changes that have occurred, and reflect on those that could still occur.

The first amendment entitles citizens of the United States to freedom of speech, freedom of thought, and freedom of expression. The questions these readings address are, should there be a limit to that freedom, and if so, how can we, as citizens, decide what should or should not be allowed?

Some people hold the belief that any thought or action that is opposed to those established by our government should be dismissed as being untrue. Some would call people holding these opinions unpatriotic, however I believe the exact opposite to be true. The genius of the United States Constitution is that it can always be changed; our country was founded upon the belief that as time went on things would change, and we as a community would have to change with them. Without opposition to what is already established change cannot occur, and therefore we as country will never grow.

Throughout history different groups of people have adopted symbols as a means of expression. In the United States the most recognized symbol is that of the American Flag. To some this symbol might represent all that is good with our country, but to others it could represent the exact opposite. Different things have different meanings to different people. Just as the symbol of the swastika brings a sense of pride to the National Socialist Party, at the same time it brings a sense of suffering and loss to the Jewish. The first amendment and freedom of expression gives both parties the right to express their feelings of these symbols and all that they represent as they see fit. If that expression should include desecrating them, it is their prerogative. Again, without opposition, the can be no growth.

Just as people have the choice to see something, they also have the choice to not see it. Everything exists for a reason, therefore, even if you like something, that doesn't mean that everyone else does to, and vice versa. Take pornography, the author of the article is obviously strongly opposed to all forms of pornography, yet it is still being made therefore not everyone is opposed to it. Again, this is a situation of freedom of expression and freedom of choice, it is their prerogative to make it, but no one is forcing anyone to see it.

Nine Stories written by J.D. Salinger can be interpreted in many ways. Salinger the writer of Catcher in the Rye as well is known for including many symbols in his writings. The first two stories of the book A Perfect Day for Banana fish, and Uncle Wiggly in Connecticut both contain many of the symbols mentioned above. While Catcher in the Rye and Nine Stories vary greatly in content the some of the symbolism and the general system of writing is similar.

A Perfect Day for Banana Fish is a story about a man named Seymour Glass, who is trying to live after the traumatic experience of fighting in the world war of his time. Seymour Glass is married to a woman named Muriel. Glass is clear; the fact that their last name is Glass, can symbolize how their both trying to figure out their lives, and trying to make what is cloudy clear. They're trying to see through the glass, into a clear world, where everything is laid out, not complicated. Seymour, can also be symbolic of a man who wants to see more in the world. When Seymour came back from fighting in the war he changed, and like most men he because depressed, and almost mentally unstable. He no longer was content with his life, his wife, and how his life had been before the war. Seymour wants to see more of what life can offer, and he wants to see if there's more to life than what he's experiencing now.

It can also be said to be symbolic, that Muriel is painting her toenails. When a person paints their nails, they are covering up what is underneath. Muriel is trying to deny the problems within Seymour, and within their marriage and she is trying to cover up the pain, and mask it by saying that everything is okay. Muriel is smoking throughout the whole story. Smoke has the ability to cloud ones vision and ones judgment. Muriel's love for Seymour, is clouding her vision of the true issue, and how much trouble Seymour is truly in.

College papers on 9 Stories

Seymour goes and spends the day sitting on the beach in his bathrobe. The fact that he does not take off his bathrobe can be symbolic, of the fact that while he is concealing his body, he is also concealing his pain. Seymour becomes friendly with a girl named Sybil Carpenter. A carpenter takes a piece of non-descript wood, and manages to form it into whichever shape he wants. Although Sybil is just a little girl, the time that Seymour spends with her, helps him to remold who he is, and it gives him a chance, to try and mold this young girl. Seymour makes a point when he sees Sybil, to tell her that he loves a blue bathing suit, in which she replies that her bathing suit is yellow. The color yellow represents a coward, and Seymour feels like a coward living his life, as if nothing is wrong, when deep inside he feels he can no longer can live his life. The color blue was the color of the Union Army's uniform, during the civil war. Seymour, just having come back from war, might be able to associate with a color used during war, and the people who wore the blue uniforms, didn't succumb to defeat, and this might be Seymour's last chance, to try and not succumb to defeat. When Sybil and Seymour are sitting near the rubber float, Seymour states how it needs more air. Air and oxygen are what help a person, to continue to live and at this point Seymour, feels as if he no longer can use the oxygen to survive. Seymour tells Sybil, that it is a perfect day for banana fish. He describes a banana fish, as being a fish that swims into a whole filled with bananas, and while in the whole, the banana fish eats all the bananas in the whole, and then becomes too fat to swim out of the whole. After getting stuck in the whole, the banana fish eventually explodes and dies. That is how Seymour sees his own life. He sees himself as one of the banana fish. He went to war with the greatest expectations, to serve his country and help other people. Once in the war, Seymour got stuck there and couldn't find a way out. Seymour begins to feel overwhelmed with his own life and ends up killing himself.

Uncle Wiggly in Connecticut is a story about two friends, named Mary Jane and Eloise. Mary Jane and Eloise had been friends for a long time and Mary Jane, is going to Eloise's house, to spend the day with her. When Mary Jane first arrives, Eloise states how their lunch has burned. When something is burned, it means that it is overcooked or over done. Eloise seems to be tired of her life. She feels as if she has been over worked, and over done. She feels as if she cannot continue her life anymore the way it is, and she feels burned by the whole situation. When someone makes lots of mistake, you can also say that they got "burned". Eloise feels as if her life has been one big mistake, and as when someone burns something it becomes a mistake, she feels as if her life is a mistake. Mary Jane and Eloise, choose to drink while sitting in Eloise's house. Drinking can alter a person's reality and perception of what is going on. Eloise and Mary Jane both for various purposes choose to drink, in order to escape their own lives and realities. Mary Jane has a dead end job, and no family, Eloise has a husband who's never there, and she's lonely. This all accounts for them wanting to create their own realities, and by drinking they were able to do that.

They day that they see each other it is snowing, and Eloise is smoking. When it is snowing, and the ground is covered in snow, it appears all white, and the land that is underneath, cannot be seen. The fact that it is snowing, can be symbolic of the fact that Eloise is covering up her feelings, and as opposed to showing what is underneath, to let her true feelings show, Eloise is choosing them to stay hidden. The symbolism for the fact that she is smoking is listed above. Eloise's daughter's name is Ramona. A Ramona is a shrubby plant, with aromatic grayish-green leaves, used as a cooking herb. A plant is supposed to brighten up a room, and can be used as a distraction for a lonely person. Eloise is lonely and discontent with her life. A person who feels that way, usually will either buy a pet, or a plant, to give them something else, to make them feel better. Without her daughter, Eloise might have taken her own life, or found her life too hard to bear, but her daughter helps her to feel better, and gives her something else besides from herself to worry about. The Ramona is a plant that is usually used for cooking. When someone cooks, something it a creation of there own, that they take pride in. Ramona is Eloise's own creation, and she is all Eloise has to see if she is worthy.

Ramona wears thick glasses, and cannot see without them. Because of Eloise's feelings towards her life, Ramona's reality has been altered. A person wears glasses to help them see clearly, and to make things brighter, however, because Ramona cant see without her glasses, her idea of reality is altered, and it makes it very hard for her to see what is real and normal, and what is a product of her personal upbringing. Ramona at one point states, how she won't kiss Mary Jane hello. She says that she doesn't like kisses, and won't kiss Mary Jane. Kisses can be seen as a sign of love and intimacy. The fact that Ramona wont kiss Mary Jane, can be symbolic of the missing love, and intimacy in her life. Ramona has to invent a make believe friend because she is so lonely. There is intimacy missing from her parent's relationship. Her mother's real love was a different man, who tragically died in the war, and she resents her husband, for not being the man she loves. Ramona has seen that there is no intimacy in her parent's marriage, and that is why she can't relate, or like it. When the man that Eloise truly loved was leaving by bus, Eloise tried to catch him, and run after it. Eloise fell and twisted her ankle. The man yelled out to Eloise "Poor Uncle Wiggly", and he was talking about her ankle. At the end of the book, Eloise bangs her knee against the edge of Ramona's bed, and says yet again "Poor Uncle Wiggly." At this point Eloise isn't really talking about her knee or her ankle; she is talking about her dead dreams. Eloise is thinking of what her life could have been, and what it could have meant, and she said poor uncle wiggly, referring to the man she used to love, the life she could have had, and her poor child that she never could really love.

In his stories, Salinger manages to take a regular item, and give it a much deeper meaning. Salinger's stories are filled with symbols, and deep inner meanings, that allow the story to take on a whole separate meaning.

How does the Digestion System Work?

The digestive system is a series of hollow organs joined in a long tube that starts at the mouth and ends at

the anus. Inside the tube is a lining called the mucosa. In the mouth, stomach, and small intestine, the

mucosa contains tiny glands that produce juices to help digest food. Two solid organs, the liver and the

pancreas, produce digestive juices that reach the intestine through small tubes. The digestive juices are used

to turn swallowed food into a substance that the body can use, and this substance travels through your small

intestine, where the proteins are absorbed through the walls and used, and whatever isn't used is disposed

of.

Describe the body parts in your system and what they do

The first gland that starts the digestion of food would be the salivary glands. The saliva that is produced by

these glands contains an enzyme that begins to digest the starch from food into smaller molecules.

The next set of digestive glands is in the stomach lining. They produce stomach acid and an enzyme that

digests protein. After the stomach empties the food and juice mixture into the small intestine, the juices of

two other digestive organs mix with the food to continue the process of digestion. One of these organs is the

pancreas. It produces a juice that has alot of enzymes to break down the carbohydrate, fat, and protein in

food. Other enzymes that are active in the process come from glands in the wall of the intestine or even a

part of that wall.

The liver produces a digestive juice called bile. The bile is stored between meals in the gallbladder. At

mealtime, it is squeezed out of the gallbladder into the bile ducts to reach the intestine and mix with the fat

in food. The bile acids dissolve the fat into the watery contents of the intestine. After the fat is dissolved, it

is digested by enzymes from the pancreas and the lining of the intestine. After the food is digested, water

and minerals are absorbed from the cavity of the upper small intestine. Most of the absorbed minerals are

carried off in the bloodstream to other parts of the body for storage or more chemical change. What ever is

not used is waste, and is disposed from the body through the large intestine.

What are some problems or diseases this system could have?

One of the most common problems the digestive system can have is diarrhea. Diarrhea is loose water stools,

occurring more than three times in one day. Another disease is appendicitis. Appendicitis is inflammation of

the appendix. If untreated, an inflamed appendix can burst, causing infection and even death. Appendicitis

can affect people at any age. The last disease that I am going to mention is the Celiac Disease. Celiac

disease is a digestive disease that damages the small intestine and interferes with absorption of nutrients

from food. People who have celiac disease cannot tolerate a protein called gluten, which is found in wheat,

rye, barley, and possibly oats.

Why is this system important to the body?

The digestive system is important to the body because it prepares food, which gives the body the energy that

it needs, for hundreds of millions of body cells. Food cannot reach cells when it is eaten because it cannot

pass through the intestinal walls to the bloodstream and, if it could, it would not be in a useful chemical

state. The stomach changes food physically and chemically and disposes of what it cannot use. Physical

and chemical modification depends on exocrine and endocrine secretions and controlled movement of food

through the digestive tract.

Conclusion

The digestion system is truly one of the most important systems in the body. It supplies all the energy we

need to go through each and every day, that is why it is important to maintain a healthy diet. I learned about

different diseases you can get if u don't take care of your body properly. So remember, a healthy diet, a

healthy body.

Background

Hank Kolb had been Quality Assurance director for only four weeks. After his return from a seminar, Kolb was finally able to look into quality problems at an industrial products plant employing 100 people. Kolb's first encounter with deficient quality was with the Greasex line (a specialized degreasing solvent packed in a spray can for the high technology sector). A little high pressure was found in some cans on the second shift, but a supervisor vented them in order to meet their delivery schedule.

From talking with Mark Hamler, his quality control manager, Kolb knew more about the background of the Greasex production line. He found two main problems

· Filling equipment. There was some trouble with the new filling equipment and some of the cans were pressurized beyond the upper specification limit.

· Production rate. The production rate was below standard. Mac Evans, the inspector for that line, found the problem, tagged the cases "hold", and went on about his duties. When he returned at the end of the shift to write up the rejects, Mac had found that Wayne Simmons, his first-line supervisor, had vented the can and removed the "hold" tags. Evans didn't document this occurrence, but verbally informed Hamler of the situation. Hamler responded by asking Mac to check with maintenance and make sure the filling machine was adjusted. He also recommended that the "hold" products be sent through rework next time.

· Production Value. Some have wrong production attitude that it is well only for meeting the deadline.

Causes of the Quality Problems

To make clear why the quality and productive problems occurred, Kolb reviewed the following causes on the current Greasex line.

Top managerial level Morganthal, general manager, pointed out the plant was lacking a quality attitude. Morganthal hope to improve quality and reduce the operation cost so that this downward quality-productivity-turnover spiral should be ended.

Personnel The operator for the filling equipment lacked sufficient training. When Evans had tested the high-pressure cans the operator was nowhere to be found and had only learned of the rejected material from Wayne after the shift was over.

Plant maintenance The automated filling equipment had been adapted by plant maintenance for handling the lower viscosity of Greasex, for which it had not originally been designed. Preventive maintenance was not scheduled. The parts for the sensitive filling head had been replaced three times in the last six months.

Purchasing Plastic nozzle heads purchased for the Greasex can caused some trouble in fitting the top due to slight burrs found on the inside rim. Increasing the application pressure at the filling head was implemented to solve the burr application problem.

Product design and packaging The Greasex can had been uniquely contoured to allow better gripping by the user. However, marketing did not have any testing done on the effects of the contoured can on filing speed or filling hydrodynamics from a high-pressured filling head. Kolb suspected the new design was acting as a venturi when being filled, although designer thought that was unlikely.

Manufacturing manager Simmons bragged about how he beat his production quota to the other foremen and shift supervisors. The manufacturing manager was under pressure to improve costs and reduced delivery times. Although Wayne sympathized with Kolb, he justified his actions by stating the rework area would have vented with their pressure gauges what he had done by hand.

Marketing. Greasex was being pushed to be first-to-market and a major promotional advertising campaign was underway. Marketing didn't care if the product was a little off spec. They felt " it would be better to have it on the shelf than not there at all. Who cares if the label is a little crooked or the stuff comes out with a little too much pressure? We need market share now in that high-tech segment."

Responsibility

As quality assurance director in the Quality department for the Greasex product, Kolb should take responsibility to improve quality and solve production problems. He was concerned about the safety issue of the high pressure. Kolb had no way of knowing how much of a hazard the high pressure was or if Simmons had vented them enough to effectively reduce the hazard. The data from the can manufacturer, which Hamler had showed him, indicated that the high pressure found by the inspector was not in the danger area. The inspector, however, had only used a sample testing procedure to reject the eight cases. Even if he could morally accept that there was no product safety hazard, Kolb cannot make sure that this would never happen again.

Secondly, Kolb thought quality, productivity and also creating a new attitude were his challenges; he should make clear what to do when these quality and productivity problems happened.

Suggestions and Solutions

Kolb should summarize the above causes and undertake the following solutions

1. Consistency of purpose. Firstly, Kolb needs to set up a work target to improve the Greasex plant and its products.

. More communication with marketing department. He should let them know the importance of the quality and the reason why he is trying to improve it. Kolb should communicate with marketing that in the view of long-term development of company in the market, quality and service was very important issue if they wanted improve customer loyalty and get more new customers.

. Full usage of equipment to improve productivity. Kolb may need to research the need to purchase new machinery that was more fit to the Greasex production line. This can help to reduce nonstandard downtime and expand the actual running time. If Kolb cannot buy machinery because of the cost and time for equipping, he needs to set regular preventive maintenance in order to make sure that the equipment is running in good condition.

4. Improvement on the awareness of quality in purchasing. Kolb should work with purchasing to help them understand the importance of quality and the need for quick solutions.

5. Awareness of costs associated with the poor quality. The first cost is prevention cost associated with reducing the potential for defective parts or services. The second one is appraisal cost related to evaluating products, processes, parts, and services. The third one is internal failure cost resulted from production of defective parts or services before delivery to customers. The last one is external costs occurred after delivery of defective parts or services.

6. The relationship with manufacturing should be improved. Kolb can establish a project group and include the quality control manager, inspector, and first-line supervisor. With Hamler, Mac, Simmons and other specialists' plant working experience, Kolb can find more solutions to quality and productivity.

7. Full and continual support from top level of management. By effectively and sufficiently reporting to Morganthal directly, Kolb can get more support and help from Morganthal for his work on the Greasex plant.

8. The use of problem solving tools could also be helpful in determining root causes of quality issues.

a. A Process Flow Chart could help Kolb identify responsibilities. For example, if the flow shows that marketing is supposed to send new product designs for testing, Kolb can point to the failure to follow this process as a key reason for the quality problems.

b. A Fish-Bone diagram can also be used to spot possible causes for the poor quality.

c. Because of the number of variables involved, Kolb can also use an x-chart and R-chart.

. Improvement a CAPA program (Corrective Action, Preventive Action). This program requires that once a quality issue arises, the first step is to correct the problem. The second step is to determine the causes and make the necessary changes to prevent its occurrence. Part of this program is documentation. This was a key issue at Kolb's plant. No one documented any of the problems or solutions.

In conclusion, quality management requires a never-ending process of continuous improvement that covers human resources, equipment, suppliers, materials and procedures. Kolb is key in building a work culture that endorses quality awareness and continuous improvement.

Why a Masters Degree

Each individual has their own reasoning behind their pursuit of a graduate degree. Professional and career goals, self-improvement, status in society, and of course monetary reasons, are just a few motivating factors. My decision to attain a graduate degree was based on a combination of these factors. When I was younger, to have for a successful career, an undergraduate degree seemed more than enough. But, times have changed, and an undergraduate degree is just not enough to make it in today's society. To keep in pace with today's high tech environment, a graduate degree is not only an asset, but now more than ever, it seems essential.

The Question now is why do I want an MBA? Being a payroll manager, I was put in situations working with customers from various backgrounds and educational levels. The decision of pursuing my masters in business emerged from my interaction with these individuals. As I worked more and more with these customers from, I felt the need to become better rounded, and to explore the different possibilities lying ahead of me. I expect a graduate education to strengthen my weaknesses, and better prepare me for all of these situations. I believe that the combination of my experience and a graduate degree will allow me to be a commodity to society, enabling me to achieve my professional goals.

Even though I have experience in a professional environment, I felt as if I am still lacking in some areas. Getting my undergraduate education has helped me start the building process, but I feel the need to go a step further and to solidify the foundation. This was one of the main reasons that I decided to pursue my graduate degree. Family usually plays a major role in decisions, and it was not any different in my case. As a teenager, when I was not as excited as I am now about learning, my dad used to give me several pep talks to reinforce me. One such talk I recall is when he told me that the one thing no one could take away from my life is education. At the time, I never took his words seriously.

Now that I look back, I see how true he was and that the knowledge that I gain will be with me till the end. Yes, I have an undergraduate degree, but a post graduate degree will open up a wide range of doors, such as, increasing career options, allowing me to switch careers and to diversify the types of organizations in which I can seek employment. The career possibilities range from accounting, finance, technology, and health care just to mention a few. Even though the salary factor has not played as significant of a role as others in my decision process, (I can retire) it is definitely an incentive, or maybe even more like icing on the cake.

So far, I have been discussing what I can achieve professionally through a graduate degree. Personal satisfaction has also played an important part in my decision. I still remember the happiness in my life as I completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Phoenix (UOP). I felt as if I had accomplished a great deal. I still thrive for that feeling of accomplishment, the personal joy when achieving my goals set in life. Through starting my graduate education, I have embarked on a new journey in search of knowledge, professional status, and of course self-satisfaction.

In conclusion, I believe by starting my graduate education, I have moved one step closer to my goal of making a mark in society, and in due course I will fulfill my goals for both my professional and personal life. I believe that all of my life experiences have been necessary to bring me to this point. I am mentally prepared and persistent enough to excel at any endeavor, and have developed the compassion and commitment that will drive me through the years to come. I look forward to my future with great anticipation, and know that the time has finally come for me to realize my dreams.

Gun Control

In order to reduce gun vilolence in the U.S., there should be stricter gun regulation.

By

Don Sunberg

U.S. Politics and Government

Dr. M. Anderson

Violence and crime in todays society is inevitable. Human nature is full of hatred, jealousy, and chaos. Throwing guns into the equation adds security for some, and vulnerability for others. Gun regulation is a topic of debate that has been going on for years and looks to be going on for many more to come. Although, each side of the issue seems to have a possibility of security for all, a healthy median of both sides proves to be hard to come by.

On the side of no gun regulation, advocates explain that a concealed handgun provides safety, and that people who defend themselves (with guns) may indirectly benefit other citizens. Cab drivers and drug dealers who carry guns produce a benefit for cab drivers and drug dealers without guns (Lott 18). This theory seems like it could be quite effective, but it brings questions of whether drug dealers would even obey gun regulation laws if imposed, since they are already braking the law by dealing drugs. One might ask why do drug dealers need guns? The answer is quite simple, most violent acts are due to drug and alcohol abuse (Write 1).

The ability to carry a concealed weapon provides safety to the insecure and vulnerable. Erika Schwartz (the first runner-up in the 17 Miss America pageant) made her decision to carry a gun after becoming a victim of a carjacking. Other women carry a weapon due to their fear of rape. Laurence Rockefellers reason to pack heat is because he carries large sums of money and feels that a gun will protect him from becoming a victim of a mugging (Lott ).

Advocates of no gun control say that the current gun regulation of a waiting period to help potential murders time to cool off is a total waste of time. Any one who leaves the scene of an argument, drives to a gun shop, buys a weapon, loads it with ammunition, and returns to kill the awaiting victim can hardly be said to be acting in the heat of the moment (Sullum).

Gun regulation only prevents the innocent from having the right to protect himself or herself. Felons and criminals will go to all costs to get a weapon to kill, gun regulation or not.
