As an Iranian-American I have been influenced by the American culture as well as the Iranian culture. Both of my parents were raised in Iran, and they were of the few immigrants who came to the U.S. in their early 0's and did not become Americanized. The culture in Iran compared to the United States is very different. People dress differently, people act differently, and people have different standards. Generally, the Iranian culture is very conservative. In Iran people are very particular about education and so are my parents. They stress this very much and it has become a priority for me.

My family follows their culture quite closely so I have to make the same commitment. Even though education is the main concern of my parents, it is not an issue because it is what I am striving for also. I am finishing high school a year early, and I am in a process of getting guaranteed transfers to several universities. Even though I follow the same terms that they do at home I am totally different at school and around my friends. At home I tend swallow my pride so that my parents have unconditional respect that the Iranian culture emphasizes. At school and away from the family I have the urge to let it all out, and be as loud and obnoxious as I want to be. To my friends I am the loud, little nerd, and to my family I am a party animal. The differences yet that seem so similar but different at the same time are that I live with their culture away from my family but without it when I am with them.

It is more than instinct for me to find a reason to rebel in that kind of small way. It gives me a special sentimental feeling that is better to live with than without. My parents have spent their whole lives pressuring their culture onto me because for them it seems that my life would be easier with it. I have adapted their culture and used it to customize my own personality, yet I still do not fully follow it because in this day and age it is practically impossible. With the culture that my parents grew up in, they didn't have much communication with members of the opposite sex unless they were family. I do not get along with members of my own sex very well, most of my friends tend to be boys because they are more easy-going, and I tend to have a better time with them. Other than that the rest of their culture is mostly bearable and livable.

My dad grew up in a very poor family and my mom in a rich family. This is also another reason why it is hard to adapt to both of my parents culture's at the same time. They were both from a different class. My father lived in a house were there was no running water, and yet he attended the most prestigious University in Iran. He was the first person in his family to get a high-school diploma. He got his bachelors degree and then got a scholarship to Stanford University, where he got his masters degree and later his PhD. My mother did not come from a poor family; in fact it was quite the opposite. She went to Europe, just for fun, and decided to stay. Later on she came to the U.S. where she decided to study. She went to school and got her masters degree. From both of my parents come two completely different heritages, both which I have adapted to myself and mixed to fit my own personality. They both push for a very high education. With their influence my goal is to become one of the people in my family that takes our class and status higher like my mother and father did.

I have come from a rich spoiled family and a hard working poor family. I have grown up with people who understand the importance of education, and who have made it a goal for me to get the best education that I can. Even though I am very influenced by my parents and they have affected me in the greatest way but not enough to change my own personal ideas. My personality is the one I was born with. I take in my parent's culture and heritage as opinions and when I see a good use for them I keep them. If not I throw it out the window and live life the way I feel comfortable. I live and I abide by my own culture.
