The two short stories that I read were both awfully complicated to understand. The stories became clearer as I read them through a couple of times. The two stories that I read were, "The Tell Tale Heart" by Edgar Allan Poe, and "Never" by H.E. Bates. There are very few characters in both of the stories, and very little information that is given about the personal life of the main character in, "The Tell Tale Heart" .The story mainly goes on with the plot. The setting of the books is both very limited, the setting also creates a lot of effect in both stories and helps bring more effect to the story. The plots in both stories are developed very well, and help the stories create more interest for the reader. There are not many themes in both of the written pieces of work, but the themes that are involved are very important and relate to real life themes of real people.
The characters were very limited in both the stories and were not brought out much, for the reader to get to know them well. In the story, "Never", the main characters name was, Nellie. She was a girl who was bored with her everyday routine and wanted a change in her life. She was anxious to leave home to look for a new beginning and start a more interesting life. She is a realistic character as many people face this issue with there lives. They have nothing different to do and have the same routine everyday, which they believe makes there life's dull and boring. Her character demands emotional response from the reader, because she feels that the readers should feel sorry for her because she believes she's the only one with this problem. Nellie is a very symbolic character. She symbolizes a life that has no change, and boredom. Most readers will give an emotional response to her character because of her situation. The only other character mentioned in this story is her father. He's not technically in the story but the narrator does make mention of him and how he plays cards. Her father repeats, "I never have a decent hand, I thought the ace of trumps had gone."(H.E Bates, Pg.1). This story is told from a third person's point of view. The narrator is someone who views what she does and knows about her whereabouts all the time. The main character in "The Tell Tale Heart" we know very little about, because the author does not tend to give out a lot of information on him or her. The character is the care taker of the old man that he wants to kill, so he is also the murder in the story. We do not even know about the characters gender. Most believe it is a male, but that is just a speculation that readers take. He or she also is nameless, because in the story the author does not give a name. He or she also refers to the character as "I" and "me" that tells us that the narrator is also the main character and he or she is telling the story. Which means that the story is told in first person? The character in this story relates to that of a murder. It gets you into the mind of murders, as they plan a murder and act upon one. Therefore the character is realistic. The character that is also the narrator keeps trying to convince the reader that he is not mad, so he is trying to get an emotional response from the reader.

In "The Tell Tale Heart" there is simply one setting, which is the house of the elderly man. The time the story takes place is at night time around twelve o'clock, because in the story it says how the narrator waits till night, and every night tries to try and kill the old man. The atmosphere is gloomy, and dark. Like a horror type scene. It creates more effect to the story and makes it go along with the plot. The author makes the reader seem like the scene is dark and quite so it helps readers get into the mood of the story. The setting of "Never" is located in the girl, Nellie's house, the roads of her town or city, and also the railway. All these places relate to the mood of the story because her house is empty and boring, the railway is empty and the streets are empty. All three of these settings make reference to the theme of the story which is loneliness. The setting in both stories has great importance because it creates a lot of effect to the story. It also lets the reader understand more from the story, and get more out of it by paying attention to the setting. The authors also use a lot of local colour in their stories because they want there settings to relate to the plot of the story. It also helps the reader understand the plot more.
The differences in the stories, in conflict were that in one of the stories the conflict was to do with weather or not the character was mad or not. Many people thought he was mad because he was going to kill the man just because of his eyes. In the other story the conflict was that the lady wanted changes her life, because she thought she had no life, but not realizing that, that's how life is. The similarity in the conflict is that both characters need to realize what they have. For example, Nellie needs to realize that she should not take life for granted, and respect what she has. The murderer should realize that he is mad and insane because he is killing the man for a foolish reason. There are both inner and external conflicts in both the stories. The inner conflicts occur, when Nellie's conscious takes over her mind, and stops her from leaving. The murderer's inner conflict was weather he is mental or not. The external conflicts were, weather Nellie's life, and how boring it was with the same routine. In the other story it was the act of the murder it self. There are no flashbacks in "The Tell Tale Heart". Everything moves in chronological order. In "Never" Nellie keeps having flashbacks of the good times she used to have at her house. Her conscious takes over her mind making her late for her trip. This is very surprising because in the end I thought she would end up going to London, since she was looking forward to it and most of the time stories end happily ever after.
In "The Tell Tale Heart" the theme is mainly, good and evil or light and dark. That shows the human nature of the story. This is because some people believe that good is represented by light and darkness, is represented by evil. In this story the darkness shows that something is about to happen. Madness is one thing that makes humans do bizarre things. For example, because the eye drove the narrator wild, he wanted to kill the old man. Also the murder was mad, so humans tend to do things they would not do if they were sane. In "Never", Nellie's conscience played a large role in the story. That was the reason she became late and never ended up leaving, this tells us that when humans sub-conscience comes into play, humans tend to drift off into there own world not knowing what's going to happen. Also u can never take things for granted you should be happy with what you have, because once she thought of the things she was thinking of them because she would never be able to perform those duties again. That she did not want. So in the end her sub-conscience got the best of her. I believe that the entertainment and emotional value is more important than the theme because with out those two elements the story would be dull and boring, and would not catch the reader's attention. Both these stories have entertainment and emotional value over themes, which make the stories more interesting for readers. The themes in both the stories are not directly stated, they are all interpreted some way or another in both stories.
