Religion has always been a fascination to me. Especially religions, which are the opposite from mine. Islam and Christianity are two, which intrigue a person like me. This essay will try and give a better understanding of the differences between these two religions. The differences in their beliefs and practices will be looked at in this essay. Islam, a religion consisted of mostly Muslims, puts God before everything else.
The word Islam means surrender or submission to the will of God(Esposito 6). The Muslims follow the Islamic law. Muslims believe that law is religious and that is why they feel the need to obey these laws. God is very important in the Islamic religion. God is everything to them. The Muslims pray to Allah five times a day. Unlike Christians Islamic people are able to have more than one wife without it being frowned upon. In the Christian religion we must only have one wife and not five at one time. All Muslims must follow the Five Pillars and accept them. The first one is The Profession of Faith this means that the Muslims know that they have only one God (Allah) and that Muhammad is God's messenger. It also lets makes them remember that polytheism is not allowed and is a sin that is unforgivable in the Islamic religion. Muslims must do this at least once in their lifetime. The second one is Prayer Muslims, like stated previously, pray five times a day. In Islam the pray while facing their holy city named Mecca. The five times in which they pray are daybreak, at noon, in the mid-afternoon, at sunset and during the evening. God is most great(Esposito 0) is said every time before an act of worship followed by bowing and recitation of prayers including the one from the Quran. They end their prayer with the Shahada. The third one is Almsgiving (zakat) this is paying alms tax (poor tithe) and if they can afford it pay an annual wealth tax. The Muslims see this as an act of both worship or thanksgiving to God and of service to the community (Esposito 1). This is a tax that helps the poor. The fourth one is The Fast or Ramadan Every year the Muslims must fast for the whole month or Ramadan, which is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. They do this from dawn until sunset. During this time they must not eat, drink, or have any sexual activity but on one condition only if their health permits them to. Ramadan is a time for the Muslims to reflect. At the end of Ramadan they have a huge celebration called the Feats of the Break of the Fast. This lasts for three days and families come from far to exchange presents with one another and they feast. If a Muslim is incapable of doing this because they are pregnant or sick then the must feed a needy person for everyday they miss. The fifth one is Pilgrimage (the Hajj) This is when each Muslim, who is financially able, goes to Mecca (in Saudi Arabia) for the annual pilgrimage. This takes place on the twelfth month of the Muslim lunar calendar. The Muslim men must wear a white sheet over them and have either a shaved head or a symbolic tuft of hair (Esposito ). The women may wear a national dress or a long white dress covering their heads, of course. They must not wear jewellery or perfume. Sexual activity and hunting are prohibited during this time. When the pilgrims arrive close to Mecca they shout I am here, O Lord, I am here!(Esposito ) When they enter Mecca they go the Grand Mosque (this is where the Kaba is located). The Muslims go round the Kaba seven times in a counter clockwise motion. The Muslims end the pilgrimage with the Feast of Sacrifice. They sacrifice animals during this time like their sheep and goats and camels. This symbolizes that they are willing to sacrifice anything especially what is most important to them. The meat from these animals is mostly consumed and the majority of it is given to the needy. The pilgrimage last three days and this is when the Muslims pray and visit family and friends as well as rejoice. Although the Struggle (Jihad) is not in the Five Pillars it is still very important. Jihad means, strive or struggle in the way of God(Esposito ). Muslims usually consider this one the sixth pillar.
Christianity has been around for many years now. Christians believe that God created everything we see. Christians believe in many things from God to Life after Death. Christians believe that God made everything that we see and that we don't see. They believe that Jesus was the Son of God and that he was sent here to save mankind from death and sin(http//pages.ivillage.com/joy_acornhouse/onegodma nypathways/id1.html). Christians also believe in the Trinity, which is God as Father and son and holy spirit(http//pages.ivillage.com/joy_acornhouse/onegodmanypathways/id1.html). Christians also believe that after death there is life. The church is very important to Christians because this is when they can really communicate with God. Baptism is also important because this mean that you are accepted into God's Kingdom. Christians also believe that Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, was crucified died and was buried. That he rose again and was ascended into Heaven. They also believe that he will come again one day to judge the living and the dead. It is said that if you repent your sins then the Lord will forgive you. Most Christians follow the Bible. This tells them the story of Jesus and God and how the world was created. Christians must obey the Ten Commandments or shall be punished by the Lord. Some of them include you shall have no other Gods before me, thou shall not steal, remember to keep the Sabbath day holy, thou shall not commit adultery…(http//www.the10commandments.info/). Christians celebrate Christmas Good Friday and Easter in order to remember Jesus Christ's birth the day he was crucified and died and the day he rose. On these holidays families get together and feast and exchange presents (Christmas and Easter). The way of celebrating is almost the same as Muslim's in the sense that they both feast and visit family and exchange presents. On Christmas Eve at midnight Christians attend church to pray since Jesus was born on this day. At Easter the church holds a special ceremony for Jesus. Christians are not supposed to eat meat on Christmas only fish.
The Islamic religion is not so different from the Christian religion because both believe in one God and a prophet of his. Although they have different ways of celebrating and different beliefs that should not give any of them a reason not to explore and learn about the other religion. This essay was intended to learn the different beliefs of these two religions and hopefully it has fulfilled these intentions. Those who knew nothing about these two religions have hopefully learned more about them.
