The novel begins with the introduction of the main character,

and narrator of the book, Reuven Malter. Reuven is an orthodox,

and a motherless teen living in a large, Jewish community. The

other principal character of the story, is Danny Saunders, a Hasid. He

lives with his father, the religious leader, or rabbi of their Hasidic

Temple. They formally met at the point in time when Danny was at bat

at the softball game between their yeshivas. He accidently hit the ball

toward Reuven, which ended up hitting him in the eye. This left him

hospitalized for a week. During this time, Danny came to the hospital

to apologize, but Reuven denied his entrance, apologies, and sent him

off. Though, when his father found out about the conversation he told

him that he should never refuse to accept someone's apology. From

then on, when Danny would visit, a wonderful friendship developed

between the two boys.

Ever since the hospital incidents, the boys have opened up to

each other and became companions. Reuven finds out many things

about Danny Saunders, including the fact that Mr. Malter, Reuven's

father, was the one that has been meeting and recommending books

to him at the library. Reuven and his father went to their synagogue in

the morning, and then Reuven went with Danny to his shul to see his

father in the late afternoon. There, Danny introduces his father to

Reuven. Later, Reuven corrected a "mistake" on Reb's speech and

was then praised for having the knowledge to correct him, and was

"permitted" to have a friendship with Danny. Lastly, Reuven learns that

Mr. Saunders, Danny's father, raises him in "silence"; meaning that

they don't discuss anything together, unless it's regarding the Talmud.

As the news slipped by of President Roosevelt's death, everyone

was miserable. Brightening up many people's days, however, was a

new radio story- World War Two has ended. They pondered how G-d

could let all this happen; six-million jews murdered by Hitler and his

madmen. Following all these tragedies came another. David Malter,

Reuven's father, had a heart attack, which leaves Reuven to stay with

Danny and his family until his father could recover. Danny and Reuven

both enter Hirsh college in the fall, but Danny doesn't enjoy it at first.

He spoke to his psychology professor about Freud's methods versus

his classes, but grew to like Hirsh College's experimental psychology

after all.

As the Holocaust after-math subsides, new talk of Zionism and a

homeland for the Jews is the hot topic. David Malter gives a speech at

Madison Square Garden in support of the Zionist cause. As a result,

this caused Danny and Reuven's friendship to diminish. Reb Saunders

won't allow his son to have a relationship with the son of a determined

Zionism activist. The creation of Israel, a Jewish homeland, is begun.

The third year of college comes around the corner, and the boys are

missing more and more of each other. Reb Saunders decides to permit

their friendship again, after almost two years of school, but Reuven is

still furious with Reb.

Reuven and Danny start their last year of college, and Reb is

pleading for Reuven to come and visit. As much as Reuven hates to, he

visits the Saunder's home. This is because the only communication

between Danny and Reb, is through Reuven, and without him it's silent.

His father has been afraid to be compassionate, and he's been too

controlling. Realizing this, he allows his son to attend the college and

the career he's been dreaming of. The novel ends with a cleanly-

shaven Danny heading off to Columbia.
