Intelligent, ruthless, with an uncanny business sense. Such is William Gates.

Often considered a technologist, Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, has proven time and time again, his ability to understand technology and business. He, along with business partner and childhood friend, Paul Allen, turned a passionate hobby into a multi-billion dollar empire.

Gates, viewed as the richest and most powerful man on earth, and Allen, owner of the Portland Trailblazers basketball team, the software company Asymetrics, Ticketmaster and a large portion of America Online, have nothing to complain about. By combining their passion and understanding for computers, along with Gates' impeccable ability to apply his poker playing skills with business, they managed to sneak up on the competition. Writer Steven Levy explains it best. "Gates has the obsessive drive of a hacker working on a tough technical dilemma, yet has an uncanny grasp of the marketplace, as well as a firm conviction of what the future will be like and what he should do about it."

In the film, Pirates of Silicon Valley, as well as in reality, IBM had control over majority of the personal computing era during the 170s. Being a completely right wing company, from mandatory suits to company songs, they fully believed the future and money was in the hardware. And at the time, it was.

Meanwhile, two unknowns, Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs, both college drop-outs, working in Jobs' garage, designed and built a computer, named Apple 1, suitable for the everyday person. Jobs, an adopted, self-proclaimed visionary, was extremely anti-IBM. With Wozniak as the brains, and Jobs as the business, they founded Apple Computer Inc.

Unlike IBM, Jobs viewed personal computing as an art, and was determined to run Apple Computer Inc. as such.

Wozniak, on the other hand, saw PC's for what they were; advanced technological machines. With that in mind, he created the first computer disk operating system and a much more advanced machine named Apple 11. Despite Wozniak's resistance, Jobs continued to run Apple Computer Inc. as though it was a dysfunctional family.

During the late 70s early 80s, some employees at Xerox developed the Mouse and the Graphic Interface. When Xerox naively turned down the new technology, Jobs and his family were quick to jump on it. And the Macintosh was born.

With such a left-wing mind set, Jobs pit his Apple crew against his Macintosh crew. Some could say Jobs welcomed the conflict because it was a reflection on his childhood. But in the end, it was what brought the company to its knees.

With the momentary success of Apple Computer Inc., IBM realized the personal computing era was evolving. They began to search for an operating system for their PC and what they found was Bill Gates. Gates lead the company to believe he had what they were looking for; DOS (Disc Operating System). With an amazing poker face and one simple bluff, Gates, and Microsoft were on their way. They now had to purchase DOS from a Seattle computer company, which cost them a whole fifty thousand dollars.

Gates had the amazing ability to provide what people didn't know they needed.

"It's our job to find out what this guy doesn't he that he needs but does need, then make sure that he knows he doesnt need it, and that we are the only ones to give him the answer.

With right-wing IBM and left-wing Apple Computer Inc., there was ample room for Gates and company to move on up to center stage. Some may say he was simply lucky, or maybe even deceitful, but when all is said and done, Gates proved to be an intelligent observer who inevitably, came, saw and conquered.
