Bang! The sound was loud and quick. It sounded like a car backfiring; but the second one came quickly, and it was apparent that it was not a car backfiring at all. The sounds were gunshots. They depend on doctors primarily to treat the illness; but, secondarily, patients depend on doctors to offer them council and hope. It is for this reason that I love the idea of being a doctor, and I have decided to become a healthcare professional.

Doctors are expected to play many roles in helping patients, they should be compassionate, knowledgeable, and able to communicate both clearly and effectively, all of which I possess and exhibit willingly. I believe compassion to be innate; however, I believe the level of compassion that one exhibits is shaped and developed through life experiences. For this reason, I have participated in various organizations and activities that would allow me the opportunity to develop an increased level of compassion. While volunteering as a peer mentor and tutor, I served as a role model for entering freshman and provided them with advise on problems they encountered.

In addition to volunteering and mentoring on campus, I also had the opportunity to participate in two summer internships sponsored by the Greenville Area Health and Education Center (AHEC). During my internships, I assisted the nurses in the operating room of Greenville Memorial Hospital with the preparation of patients for surgery. My duties included completing patient charts, taking vital signs, and transporting patients to surgery. I also aided in the discharge of patients post-operation, as well. The internship also allowed me the opportunity to observe a complete operation, and shadow two doctors, a trauma surgeon and a general practitioner. During my undergraduate education at the College of Charleston, I also had the opportunity to participate in research. I performed research in the Department of Physiology and Neuroscience at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in January 001. My research experiences have allowed me the opportunity to communicate with colleagues, students, and faculty. Also, the experiences have allowed me to build effective communication skills in the process. I am the second child in a family of five. I am the first individual to attend a University and obtain a Bachelors degree. My family has been very supportive in my decision to become a doctor. I have discussed my desire to attend Ross University with my family; and, we believe that attending the university will be an enriching opportunity. My goal is to continue to set high levels of achievement while at Ross University. The curriculum offers excellent academic opportunities that really caught my attention. The incorporation of problem-based learning into the curriculum and the interaction between professors and classmates outside of the classroom are both very appealing. The diversity of the campus will allow me the opportunity to encounter new customs.

My future goals are to gain further research experience, in addition to a medical training. I would like to work to find therapeutic solutions for autoimmune diseases and examine the sequestered antigen theory in autoimmunity development.
