Religion, as I see It A Life of Choices

Religion is a set of beliefs by which we understand our world and our tiny place in it. It is a set of beliefs that defines our culture and expectations, as well as our views of people and behaviors. Religion acknowledges a significant power outside us (God). It is a spiritual path that allows us to move outside of our day-to-day needs and demands and provides us with a view of our place in the larger picture. It permits us to see our lives, our endeavors, and ourselves as part of a whole world a tapestry of people, plans and creation. Faith, on the other hand, I believe is an organized group that thinks and feels the same way about religion. Catholicism would be an example of a faith, as would Buddhism and Judaism.

That I believe in God, Jesus, Mary and all the saints and apostles is an indisputable truth for me. I believe in the story of creation as written in Genesis. What I am not sure about with regard to the creation timing issue is that if God truly created our world in six days, as we know of the time frame of six days, where were the dinosaurs? Science has shown that dinosaurs were not around at the same time as man. The other timing issue I question is the issue of age. It is written in Genesis 514 that Cainan lived to be nine hundred and ten years, and I think to myself "How is this possible?" The only assumption I can come up with is that there was a completely different calendar in use at that time. So, while I believe in the stories as they were taught to me in Catholic schools, I do question some of their validity. We are, after all, reading stories that have been passed down through thousands of years by man and, in the retelling, things may have been changed.

The image of God is dealing with the non-physical part of us our soul. We get our drive for morality, ethics and our drive to make a difference from the soul, which is in the image of God. The God I envision is a God of compassion, a God of love, and he is our Father. I believe that he is an all-powerful, infinite, nonmaterial being that is all knowing and benevolent. During terrible times of crisis, people question that if there truly is a God, why does he let bad things happen to people? One of the greatest gifts given to us by God is our choice of free will. We choose our destiny it is not pre-ordained for us at birth. Along our path of life we make choices that continually alter our plans. These choices make things either worse or better for us. Man chooses whether to hurt another human being God does not "allow" him to choose that path man chooses.

A life of choices is a more meaningful life than a programmed life. If I am programmed to love a person, it is not as meaningful as choosing to love that person. Similarly, if I dont have the choice to do good, but am programmed to do good, then there is nothing meaningful about it. Whereas, if I have the capacity to do good or evil, then good becomes much more desirable and significant. But, with choices come consequences. Life is based on the decisions that human beings have made - and the consequences that flow from that (cause and effect).

The question of why bad things happen to good people is an issue that leads people to leave the life of living with a belief in God. People think that God allows bad things to happen, but it is not God it is people that do evil. We do evil perhaps because we want something so badly that we are willing to break any law to get it to hurt any person to get it. People today are not concerned with divine retribution. When people say that what they are telling is the truth, they say, "so help me God" or "may God strike me down" but they know God is not going to do anything to them right then, so they lie. What they do not take into account is their day of judgment. The day people day and are judged by God is when they will answer for their sins.

The issue of suffering can be approached from two directions from an intellectual perspective and from a suffering perspective. From an intellectual perspective, you must ask questions about the bad event. "If God is good, why did this happen to a good person?" "We are made in the image of God, so how could this have happened?" With regard to the suffering perspective, we are talking about people in emotional distress. They want so much to believe that God would not do this to their family that they forget God did not do it a person did.

For free choice to function, evil has to have the possibility of existing. If every time a person chose to do evil and God interfered, then there would be no moral choice.

If the lives of the righteous were clearly too perfect, that too would wipe out the possibility of choice. As imperfect as our world is today, our free will to choose our paths in life is what makes the life worth living. How to overcome the evil that crosses life's path is up to each person.

The choices we make are determined by our morals and ethics that we have learned from infancy. We learn that it is not "right" to steal, to lie, to swear, to covet that which is another's, and that we must honor God and honor our parents. These are our natural laws that have evolved from the divine laws of God. Every religion, every country, no matter who they profess to know as their God, has these same laws but perhaps in different wordings. In the end, they all come down to mean the same things. It is man that chooses not to follow the laws. Man becomes greedy for things that are not his and uses the gift of free will God gave him to steal from others, to cheat and lie and even to kill to get what he wants.

Every day I am guided in my actions by what was taught to me years ago, both at home and in the Catholic schools I attended. One of the easiest things for me to do was to honor and love my parents. If you were to know my upbringing, then you would wonder at this statement. Briefly, I grew up in a comfortable middle-class suburbia household where I was abused physically and mentally for years. The fifth commandment of God is "Honor thy Father and thy Mother." Because I firmly believe in God, in everything that God has in store for us, I try very hard to live by his laws, including this one. My parents needed the extra love I could give them because they were not lovable. I did not berate God for giving them to me as parents. He did not make them into who they are, did not encourage them to do evil they chose to.

As I get older and my family becomes larger with grandchildren, I try to teach them the stories I learned through the Church. That is my role in life now as a grandmother to spread the word of God to my grandchildren. I am not a perfect person now. I was not a perfect child. I simply do the best I can with the choices I make and their consequences while trying to live "the good life".
