A central theme that flowed trough the text was the established order for women. In two dramas, El Delantal Blanco and La repetición, this topic was addressed. El Delantal Blanco was written by Sergio Vodanovic. Vodanovic was born in Chile. He wrote about social criticism and the clearly defined social function expected of women. El Delantal Blanco deals with the problems of a rich woman, La Señora, and a poor women, La empleada. The two women change roles and realize how the other side of life lives. This drama is an example of irony in Latin American literature. This drama speaks out about the limited opportunities for women and the sense of helplessness for the poor. La Repetición also addresses the limited roles of women. La Repeticion was written by Antón Arrufat. Arrufat lived in Cuba after the overthrow of the dictator Batista. He addresses the depression and hopeless existence of the economically deprived. In this drama the two characters, La Muchacha and La vecina. La muchacha is very young and the Vecina is very old. Throughout the course of the drama, we begin to understand that there is no hope for opportunity for women. To make his point, Arrufat uses masks. At the end of the play, the Vecina and Muchacha exchange masks to represent the cycle in which Latin American women are trapped. The authors used similar techniques to present their stories, however the central theme of helplessness for women is prominent.

Another aspect of Latin American literature is mistrust of the government. There were two very distinct protests for the government in our readings. The authors chose two different approaches to attack the government. First, El Censo written by Emilio Carballido is an attack on the established government in Mexico. El Censo tells the story of a poor Mexican family that is chosen to participate in a census. The family fearing the government, believes El Empardronador is coming to take away all the family possessions. Also, in this drama, Carballido presents a view of women as subordinates to men. In La Maestra, written by Enrique Buenaventura, the government is presented in a more negative way. In Columbia, were Buenaventura was born, there was a time of great civil unrest. Buenaventura writes about cruelty and violence toward the indigenous people. La Maestra tells the story of a teacher who starves herself to death in protest of the government. She tells about the murders of the villagers and speaks out from the grave about the government. Buenaventura uses brilliant symbolism to make his point.
