The Memory

In 118, Katherine Mansfield wrote a story Miss Brill. It was written in third

person, and was told from the third person omniscient point of view. It is difficult to

understand Miss Brill , because she does not undertand herself. She is a women who lives her

life through the observation of others. She was unmarried, and she went to the park , always

on Sunday afternoons, to escape her lonliness by intergrating herself into other peoples lives.

Miss Brill was kind of mysterious, and calm. From what I have read, she sat in the park

always, for past twenty years, cause she knew that the band played whole year around, For

although the band played all the year round on Sundays, out of season it was never the same.

The fur that she wore simbolized the only one, expesive thing she possesed, Miss

Brill put up her hand and touched her fur. Dear little thing! It was nice to feel it again.

Miss Brill, the main character of the story seems to consider herself an expert on involving

herself in the lives of the people. He was tall stiff, dignified, and she was wearing the

ermine toque shed bought when her hair was yellow. When she was sitting in the park,

Miss Brill saw her past memory in the park. It seems that , when she was young and in love,

they used to sit there and listen the band.

One day, he just did not come to see her, and since then she always sitting in the park waiting

for his return. In the park, she always saw couple , who were in love. Just at that moment a

boy and a girl came and sat down where the old couple had been. They were beautifully

dressed; they were in love and she prepared to listen. I think that the fiancee , also were in

the park, he would be the narrator of this story, because he knows everything about her. The

things she does before she leaves her place, what she does in the park and many more.

Miss Brill was happy with her life, until when her belief in herself are shattered by

the young couple saying that she is old and unwanted, she realizes that her belief that

her life has meaning has been an illusion. Why does she come here at all-who wants her? Why doesnt she keep her silly old mug at home? On her way home she used to

buy a slice of honeycake at the bakers, it was a little surprise to her, little present for

herself, but after hearing the young couple, she realizes , all the years she passed, sitting

in the park, she never knew how terrible hearing somthing like that, that she is not

young anymore. The worst is that she understood, that his fiancee will not come,

and she passed all those years, useless, lonely , and she figures that it was only an

memory that she have now.
