I wake up and am filled with this wonderful feeling. It's kind of hard to describe; it's a mixture of excitement and expectation. Excitement because this is an adventure I have never been on before, expectation because I have many memories to compare this to. I am leaving for Mexico in 4 hours! It is am and I am finishing up my last minute packing; bathing suit, sandals, suntan lotion. Suntan lotion; never forget it. I have had many trips ruined from lack of suntan lotion. That feeling of being burnt will stay with me forever, it's like a smell from your childhood; brings back memories. When I think of past vacations I am reminded of how much I have grown, how my tastes have changed and how I have matured.
I'm 8 years old, sitting on the beach with my Nona. My family is to my left, building the biggest sandcastle that I have ever seen. The sky is blue, the weather is sweltering, the ocean is making that "swoosh, swoosh" sound that makes you want to fall asleep; Paradise. All I can think about is Disneyland. The rides, the candy, Mickey Mouse. I am missing the simplicity of this wonderland. Where are the characters? Where are the rides? Why are we sitting on the beach doing nothing? Why do grown-ups like this hot weather? I can't fathom why someone would prefer this to Disneyland. Here I am in my pink Minnie Mouse bathing suit, sitting on my Mickey Mouse towel wishing I was somewhere, anywhere other than here. A young girl, different looking than me, walks over and says something. I can't understand it; she is talking funny. My Nona responds; she is speaking Italian. My Nona continues to translate and the girl and I go off to play in the sand. There is no verbal communication between us but we understand each other regardless. I don't even remember her name. All of a sudden this vacation isn't so bad.
Shorts, tank tops, towels. Checking off the list. I always do that, ever since girls guide camp. Make a list and check it off, leave a copy in your bag so that you don't lose anything. hrs 40mins to go; seems like eternity. I can picture myself lying on the beach, sun beating down on my body. That feeling of pure bliss. Imagine I used to think that this was boring. I was so wrong. I feel the new-found maturity. I make a vow; this vacation is going to be different. I am going to explore the country. I am going to see the Mayan Ruins, the freshwater tunnels, the stalactites and the stalagmites. I am going to learn something. I walk downstairs, my mother is freaking out and my father is still packing. Where is my brother? Still asleep? I go and wake him. We are going to be late. Some things never change. I walk through the hallway and spy a picture from our trip to Disneyland. I couldn't imagine going there again. The stress, the lines, all of the people. How you could call that a vacation is beyond me. I look beside it and see a picture of our trip to Cuba. My best friend is in it and everyone looks so happy.
The sky is grey; it's raining. Again. I can't believe that it has been raining all week. This is Cuba, it's supposed to be hot. I walk over to Becca's bed to wake her and discover that she is already up. I go out onto the balcony, she is sitting with Aaron and my brother. They are talking about the night before. What a night. The club, the people, the dancing. It was our last night. I can't believe that we are leaving already. There is a knock on the door. It's the baggage carrier, the cab is here to take us to the airport. We are going home. I start to cry, all of a sudden I don't want to leave. This has been the best vacation ever.
We get into the Limousine. My mother is positive that we have left something. My brother is sleeping. My father calm. Always clam, as if nothing matters because we are going on vacation. I decide then and there that I am going to adapt that attitude. I forgot my hairbrush, who cares I'm on vacation. This is going to be the best one yet. I'm looking out the window; the sun is starting to come up. .5 hrs until we leave. We arrive at the airport; the countdown begins. We get our tickets. My brother and I fight over the window seat. I win, as usual. Neither of us really care who gets it, it's just a routine we go through every year. It drives my parent's nuts, but it wouldn't be the same without it.
I'm 5 years old. I am walking onto the plane for the first time. I sit in my seat next to my father. He does up my seat belt. I am terrified; but I won't cry. An exquisite blonde woman comes up to me and offers me a candy and a colouring book. She tells my dad that she will bring some crayons as soon as we take off. I learn that she is a stewardess, I am not quite sure what that is but I think that I might want to be one. I am distracted. The plane begins to move. I am thrown back into reality. I am petrified. The stewardess come back and offers me a lollypop. It will help my ears. The plane starts to take off; my ears begin popping. It hurts so much; I start crying. Why do people want to do this? The seatbelt sign goes off, the stewardess comes over and asks if Jordan and I would like to go into the cockpit to meet the captain. We follow her down the aisle and into a room full of buttons. It is the most incredible thing I have ever seen.
"0 minutes to departure" we are at the gate waiting to board. Woman and small children first. I can't help thinking about that first plane trip. My stomach begins to knot as we walk through that make shift hallway that leads to our home for the next .5 hrs. The Plane. I can feel the pressure building in my ears already. We are seated, I give in and let my brother have the window seat. I get out my book, reading always helps. The seat belt sign comes on. Only a few minutes to go. The plane begins to move. The knots get tighter. Paradise, here I come.
