"Power Corrupts, Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely." This saying means that the more power one has the more corrupt they become. One that has power generally abuses it. In Macbeth many different people have power, and each use their power in a different way. Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, and the three witches each control some sort of power. What is their power, and how do they become corrupt with it?

The character of Macbeth displays little power. Macbeth is one of the weaker characters, but has the chance to have power in his hands. His only real power came when he murdered King Duncan and ruled over the people. However, this power leads him to his own death.

When Macbeth became king, power poured into his hands. Macbeth wanted nothing to knock him down. One person however, began to figure it all out; this was Banquo. When Banquo said he was not going to the banquet Macbeth knew he knew. "Our fears in Banquo stick deep…" (III, 1, 47-55). Therefore, Macbeth sent out assassins to have them killed. Macbeth used his power to convince the assassins that it would be the best for them to do this, not knowing that no matter what it would lead to their deaths. The assassins killed Banquo, but his son got away. Now that the assassins had killed for Macbeth, he had them killed. Macbeth's power already began to corrupt him and make him evil. Macbeth was taking lives just to insure his own safety.

Macbeth also showed much power over the people. "Send out moe horses, skirr the country round. Hang those that talk of fear" (V, , 5-7). Macbeth's power lead him to believe that he could treat the people as he wished and that lives didn't matter. Macbeth carelessly threw away lives like nothing. This made the people start to turn their backs on Macbeth, which started to bring him down.

The biggest flaw of Macbeth was that he believed he was unstoppable. This was because the three witches said his reign would come to an end when the Wood of Birnam came to his castle, and that he can only be killed by a man not born of women. "I will not be afraid of death and bane Till Birnam Forest come to Dunsinane" (V, 4, 5-60). Macbeth shows no fear because he feels powerful and thinks he's unstoppable. This is not true and leads him to his death. He fights thinking no one can kill him until Macduff gives him a vital wound.

Macbeth had a power which lead to his death. He thought he could control everyone by killing them. The power that Macbeth thought and felt he had, he abused it. This power turned around, only to spoil anything he could have had.

Lady Macbeth had a power in which she controlled Macbeth. She felt that Macbeth had no manly side to him. Lady Macbeth was the one with the plans and who made it all happen. Without her Macbeth would be nothing and probably wouldn't have fallen through with the murder.

Lady Macbeth wanted nothing more but the crown. In fact, she wanted it more than her husband, but if she couldn't have it Lady Macbeth would be just as happy with her husband having it. Since Lady Macbeth felt she had more manliness than Macbeth, to be a man herself would be a dream come true. "Come, you spirits That tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here, And fill me, from the crown to the toe, top-full Of direst cruelty..." (1, 5, -45). Lady Macbeth felt she had more manly power than her husband. She felt that she could do a better job of being king and murdering the present one. Lady Macbeth had the power that Macbeth needed.

The plan of the murder was all in Lady Macbeth's hands. She was the one who controlled it all. "Look like the time; bear welcome in you eye, Your hand, your tongue look like th' innocent flower, But be the serpent under't he that's coming Must be provided for and you shall put This night's great business into my dispatch…" (1, 7, 6-66). Lady Macbeth showed Macbeth who was the boss. Macbeth never argued with his wife and did as he was told. Lady Macbeth had total control of Macbeth and the king's death.

Knowing that Macbeth could easily be brought down gave Lady Macbeth the power she needed. She could mock Macbeth making him shrink like a tiny mouse. "Art thou afeard To be the same in thine own act and valor As thou art in desire? Wouldst thou have that Which thou esteem'st the ornament of life, And live a coward in thine own esteem…" (1, 7, -45). Lady Macbeth had every finger wrapped around Macbeth, making him at her beckoning call. She knew how to keep a short leash on her husband. However, her power over her husband and the murder would corrupt her and bring her down.

Lady Macbeth couldn't handle the power and control she had. It literally drove her insane and to her death. She thought she could get away with murder, when in the end it came after her. The power she had corrupted her and made her evil. Lady Macbeth wanted more than she could handle. She thought she could control the death of the king but was proven too weak for this.

The three witches possessed the most power of anyone in this play. They had power over both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. They controlled what would happen. The three witches brought Macbeth onto power and took it away.

The first prophecy tells Macbeth he will be king. "All Hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Glamis! All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor! All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter!" (1, , 47-50). The three witches hold power in Macbeth's life. Without this first prophecy Macbeth would have never thought about being king. Now that the witches have said this he wants to be king even more.

Macbeth told Lady Macbeth of the prophecy that he would be king. This made Lady Macbeth very desperate to fulfill this prophecy. If the witches hadn't of said anything to begin with, Lady Macbeth wouldn't have wanted to kill King Duncan. "What thou wouldst highly, That wouldst thou holily; wouldst not play false, And yet wouldst wrongly win. Thou'dst have, great Glamis, That which cries, "Thus thou must do" if thou have it; And that which rather thou dost fear to do..." (1, 5, 18-8). Lady Macbeth already decided what had to be done. They must kill King Duncan in order to have the crown.

Another way the three witches have power in Macbeth is that they make him feel confident. "Be lion-mettled, proud, and take no care Who chafes, who frets, or where conspires are Macbeth shall never vanquished be until Great Birnam Wood to high Dunsinane Hill Shall cone against him." (4, 1, 0-4). The three witches control when his reign as king will come to an end. However, they make him feel overly-confident and that no one can kill him. There were no trees outside his castle so he thought he would go on forever. The witches also told him that only man not born of woman could kill him. Macbeth also thought this could happen. Macbeth had no fear and would kill whoever got in his way.

The three witches had power over everyone and everything. Their power didn't so much corrupt them as it did those they had power over. They had power over Macbeth and his wife, and they both died in the end. The three witches corrupted the lives the entered and the people around them. They abused the power they had by putting evil into lives.

The more power one has the worse it gets. People become more evil with more power leading to destruction. As power accumulates, corruption gets the best of that person. A person can never win over power; it will eventually corrupt them or others.

The two short stories that I read were both awfully complicated to understand. The stories became clearer as I read them through a couple of times. The two stories that I read were, "The Tell Tale Heart" by Edgar Allan Poe, and "Never" by H.E. Bates. There are very few characters in both of the stories, and very little information that is given about the personal life of the main character in, "The Tell Tale Heart" .The story mainly goes on with the plot. The setting of the books is both very limited, the setting also creates a lot of effect in both stories and helps bring more effect to the story. The plots in both stories are developed very well, and help the stories create more interest for the reader. There are not many themes in both of the written pieces of work, but the themes that are involved are very important and relate to real life themes of real people.

The characters were very limited in both the stories and were not brought out much, for the reader to get to know them well. In the story, "Never", the main characters name was, Nellie. She was a girl who was bored with her everyday routine and wanted a change in her life. She was anxious to leave home to look for a new beginning and start a more interesting life. She is a realistic character as many people face this issue with there lives. They have nothing different to do and have the same routine everyday, which they believe makes there life's dull and boring. Her character demands emotional response from the reader, because she feels that the readers should feel sorry for her because she believes she's the only one with this problem. Nellie is a very symbolic character. She symbolizes a life that has no change, and boredom. Most readers will give an emotional response to her character because of her situation. The only other character mentioned in this story is her father. He's not technically in the story but the narrator does make mention of him and how he plays cards. Her father repeats, "I never have a decent hand, I thought the ace of trumps had gone."(H.E Bates, Pg.1). This story is told from a third person's point of view. The narrator is someone who views what she does and knows about her whereabouts all the time. The main character in "The Tell Tale Heart" we know very little about, because the author does not tend to give out a lot of information on him or her. The character is the care taker of the old man that he wants to kill, so he is also the murder in the story. We do not even know about the characters gender. Most believe it is a male, but that is just a speculation that readers take. He or she also is nameless, because in the story the author does not give a name. He or she also refers to the character as "I" and "me" that tells us that the narrator is also the main character and he or she is telling the story. Which means that the story is told in first person? The character in this story relates to that of a murder. It gets you into the mind of murders, as they plan a murder and act upon one. Therefore the character is realistic. The character that is also the narrator keeps trying to convince the reader that he is not mad, so he is trying to get an emotional response from the reader.

In "The Tell Tale Heart" there is simply one setting, which is the house of the elderly man. The time the story takes place is at night time around twelve o'clock, because in the story it says how the narrator waits till night, and every night tries to try and kill the old man. The atmosphere is gloomy, and dark. Like a horror type scene. It creates more effect to the story and makes it go along with the plot. The author makes the reader seem like the scene is dark and quite so it helps readers get into the mood of the story. The setting of "Never" is located in the girl, Nellie's house, the roads of her town or city, and also the railway. All these places relate to the mood of the story because her house is empty and boring, the railway is empty and the streets are empty. All three of these settings make reference to the theme of the story which is loneliness. The setting in both stories has great importance because it creates a lot of effect to the story. It also lets the reader understand more from the story, and get more out of it by paying attention to the setting. The authors also use a lot of local colour in their stories because they want there settings to relate to the plot of the story. It also helps the reader understand the plot more.

The differences in the stories, in conflict were that in one of the stories the conflict was to do with weather or not the character was mad or not. Many people thought he was mad because he was going to kill the man just because of his eyes. In the other story the conflict was that the lady wanted changes her life, because she thought she had no life, but not realizing that, that's how life is. The similarity in the conflict is that both characters need to realize what they have. For example, Nellie needs to realize that she should not take life for granted, and respect what she has. The murderer should realize that he is mad and insane because he is killing the man for a foolish reason. There are both inner and external conflicts in both the stories. The inner conflicts occur, when Nellie's conscious takes over her mind, and stops her from leaving. The murderer's inner conflict was weather he is mental or not. The external conflicts were, weather Nellie's life, and how boring it was with the same routine. In the other story it was the act of the murder it self. There are no flashbacks in "The Tell Tale Heart". Everything moves in chronological order. In "Never" Nellie keeps having flashbacks of the good times she used to have at her house. Her conscious takes over her mind making her late for her trip. This is very surprising because in the end I thought she would end up going to London, since she was looking forward to it and most of the time stories end happily ever after.

In "The Tell Tale Heart" the theme is mainly, good and evil or light and dark. That shows the human nature of the story. This is because some people believe that good is represented by light and darkness, is represented by evil. In this story the darkness shows that something is about to happen. Madness is one thing that makes humans do bizarre things. For example, because the eye drove the narrator wild, he wanted to kill the old man. Also the murder was mad, so humans tend to do things they would not do if they were sane. In "Never", Nellie's conscience played a large role in the story. That was the reason she became late and never ended up leaving, this tells us that when humans sub-conscience comes into play, humans tend to drift off into there own world not knowing what's going to happen. Also u can never take things for granted you should be happy with what you have, because once she thought of the things she was thinking of them because she would never be able to perform those duties again. That she did not want. So in the end her sub-conscience got the best of her. I believe that the entertainment and emotional value is more important than the theme because with out those two elements the story would be dull and boring, and would not catch the reader's attention. Both these stories have entertainment and emotional value over themes, which make the stories more interesting for readers. The themes in both the stories are not directly stated, they are all interpreted some way or another in both stories.

On My Time

The best and worst two days of my life took place at Bogarts with my band

Radioactive Weasel last month. We had practiced daily for near three

years, and our group decided to pull together again and enter The Battle

of the Bands. This was the first time we sparingly paid fifty dollars to

perform anywhere. All the other competitions we had entered were mail in

tapes and then wait for a response. We got out of bed at five in the

morning, then raced to our drummers house. Loaded on uppers, practiced

four and a half hours to perfect our original songs, we were to play that

night.

Pumped and ready to get started we packed the van with our drums and

guitars then started our journey to Clifton for our show. As usual, we

got there way to early, so we did what any fun seeking under aged

musicians would do. We searched the allies and found a half passed out

drunk and took him to the local bar, then got a few beers each before the

show. We then returned to draw numbers for the order of the bands.

I eagerly pushed my way to the front of all the other bands, being the

obnoxious prick I am, and drew the first card. Unfortunately I drew the

second band on stage out of nine. The best position to be in is about

fourth or fifth band because that is when the crowd starts getting into

the music. Pissed off I haphazardly wondered back to my group to inform

them of my greatest mistake.

We loaded the equipment into the worlds slowest elevator, and stumbled our

way to the backstage lounge. After I had read graffiti covered walls

until my heart was content I noticed much writing by some of my favorite

groups like Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Mansion, Korn, and The Dead Milkmen.

Inspired by them I also signed the wall with some chosen words. The time

had rolled around for the first band to hit the stage. Excited, we rushed

our way into the mosh pit, (in my mind the only place to be). Screams

turned into whispers as Pieces entered the stage in a cowardly manor.

After they vaigly introduced their band, in a well-maintained surprano

voice we listened to about a song and a half. Our group returned to the

lounge to put on our stage clothes. I screamed in front of the other seven

bands as I dropped my pants and underwear and slipped on my vinyl pants

and a black T-shirt. Not noticing the rest of my band had found a dressing

room. Unconcerned I grabbed my bass and a back up, and headed for the

stage. I wondered onto the main stage for the night, and danced my way

to the front.

After jump starting my ego I started to dance a jig with our singer Rob.

Stage crew finished setting up our amps, and we broke into our intro. we

made up on our way to the show. With four clicks from the drummer I felt

the energy flow through my body while we started with our cover song from

Kracker called Low. With my subconscious mind going wild, I played

flawless without even thinking about it. This made it easy to go crazy

and have a good time. Its a proven fact that if the band show

enthusiasm, and talent the crowd will loosen up and join. I think that is

the reason I love performing so much.

Sliding into song two Spectrum, a song the guitar player and I

originated came off the same way. After moving more than I ever moved on

stage before, I noticed a

blurred object flying right at me. Hitting my hand, I recognized the

object to be a bra. Then with a gentle laugh, and a sigh knowing it was

not another one of those horrid, full, open, beer bottles. I ran to the

front of the stage, with rage in my eyes, and smoothly pulled off my

first solo of the night. Satisfied, I paced back to the center of the

stage, and continued my rhythm with a slow motion filled dance.

Song three was starting as our two guitarist finished Spectrum. With

heavy bass beats and whaling drums, the crowd started to move viciously

about the floor. Without any care in the world I began to jump up and

down with the beat of the song. Starting to sweat, with great pride I

began to play even harder. Inspired by me, the two guitar players also

started to loosen, as they enjoyed the heavy flow of riffs in This Side

Down, previously written by our rhythm player Mike. Moving more than

ever we started the best song written in our three year history On My

Time.

Pushing our selves to the limits we still played with compassion and pure

energy. Wearing down, near exhausted, sweat covered, and dizzy I went

into my final solo. With the sting of sweat in my eyes, and blood running

from my finger tips from frayed strings I still pulled off the solo in

which had given me hell for such a long time. With no doubt in my mind we

would make the next level, I queued the band to do the extended version.

We tried to get every last bit of enthusiasm out of the crown we could.

Rob thanked the 50 people for coming to the show, as we grabbed our gear

and headed for the van.

Grouped back up with our shirts off we returned to the pit. Clashing

cymbals and untuned guitar screeches filled the air the rest of the night.

Scratched records could have played clearer than the following bands.

4

Upset that it was us chosen to play the same night as a group of

uneducated, punk ass losers. We returned to finish putting the final

pieces of the drum set in the van. Acting in our best behavior, and as

friendly as possible we congratulated a few chosen bands with the same

taste of music..

After getting in the van we returned to our natural state as we left the

parking lot waving good bye with single digits while our friends mooned

the feeble opponents. While we swerved all over the road, we screamed the

lyrics to every song on the radio and talked about the show. Some nicely

chosen colored lights, flashed from behind, which startled us. I pulled

over to see no other than our best friends, the Cincinnati Police. He

pranced his way to our smoke filled van, and signaled me to roll down the

window, With a grim smile I eased the window down about three quarters of

the way. By this time, I had handed him my drivers license and the

vehicle registration as he asked for it. He then asked where we were

heading, and if we knew why we were stopped. After I had explained we had

just finished a show, and were on our way home, I then asked if it was

because of swerving.

Having known I had been swerving all over the road. He remarked yes, as I

told him the van was out of alignment, and I was just getting the feel of

driving it. He told us to be careful as he walked back to his cruiser.

With a slight voice, I told myself of just how perfect I really am. While

the stereo blared, we continued to bellow the lyrics, to the songs on the

radio again. As we pulled into our drummers house at three in the

morning, we carried out tradition and drank all night. The loud ringing,

of the phone I had passed out on, woke me. Delighted when the person on

the other end told me they were the owner of Bogarts. After I realized

whom I was talking to, I was happy to hear him say we could come

back and play anytime. He quoted, Radioactive Weasel scored extremely

high for an unsigned band. I smiled to myself as he then said, However,

you have been disqualified for an unknown reason. My heart stopped as

time flew by. A nameless face had just crushed what had seemed so great

to me. The thing that confuses me is why to this very day, do they still

refuse to tell us any reason for our disqualification.

Welfare Welfare is a government program that provides money, medical care, food, housing, and other things that people need in order to survive. People who can receive help from these welfare programs are children, elders, disabled, and others who cannot support their families on their current income. Another name for welfare is public assistance. There are many organizations that supply this public assistance. Such as Salvation Army and other groups. Public assistance benefits help many people who live below the poverty line, an income level is established for families. If your income is below this you would be eligible to receive this help. Welfare in the United States Federal and state governments in the Unites States serve the poor people through about 60 public assistance programs. Most people receive help through one of the four major programs. These programs are Medicaid, Aid to families with dependant Children, Social Security, or Supplemental Security, or the food stamps program. I will discuss the four programs individually. Medicaid provides free medical care to the poor people. Funds vary from state to state. In some situations, people who may be able to pay daily needs, but cant afford large medical bills may also be able to receive Medicaid. Some services paid for are bills such as doctors visits and nursing home care. Most Medicaid funding comes from the federal government. The rest is supplied by the state. Each state runs their own Medicaid program. A.F.D.C. provides cash benefits to dependent children and the parents or the guardians taking care of them. Most families that qualify for A.F.D.C. have just one parent in the home. About 80 percent of these families are headed by a woman. A.F.D.C. also pays benefits to two-parent families if both parents are unemployed. Most A.F.D.C. funding comes from the federal government. The states provide the rest of the money and administer the program. The sizes of families payment vary from state to state. Next is Social Security Income. This provides financial Aid to people in need who are at least 65 years old, blind, or disabled. The federal government finances and administers social security income programs in most states, though some states supply the federal payment and are able to run their own programs. Finally, the Food Stamp Program helps low-income households buy more and better food than they could otherwise afford. Each participating household receives a certain number of coupons called food stamps. The stamps are issued by the federal government. The number of stamps a household receives varies with the familys size, income, and expenses. Cooperating grocery stores accept the stamps like money for food purchases only. There are other programs such as energy assistance and public housing. Energy assistance, which is federally financed but administered by the states, helps people pay fuel bills. Public housing provides low cost rental apartments in government owned buildings. State and local governments fund and administer their own general assistance programs. These programs provide financial aid for needy people who do not qualify for other types of welfare. People waiting to receive assistance from other programs also may get temporary emergency aid from general assistance. Back in the early days, welfare resembled the English system. Social governments were responsible for helping the poor. But the colonies and later the states, sometimes helped the local government provide aid. The first federal welfare program, began after the Revolutionary War, they provided pensions to war veterans. During the Civil War these pensions were expanded to cover soldiers widows and orphans. In the early 100s, primary responsibility for providing welfare benefits shifted from local to state governments. During these years, states enacted programs to aid dependent children and the elderly. The criticisms of welfare rang
