According to recent studies, more than 70 million Americans have been found to have a sleeping problem, and sixty percent of these people have a chronic disorder. Most cases go undiagnosed and untreated so doctors do not know the damage that these diseases can cause. There are many different sleep disorders that many people are not aware of. Some of these disorders include sleep apnea, parasomnias, circadian rhythms, restless leg syndrome, narcolepsy, and insomnia.

Sleep disorders are divided into several types difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep (insomnia), excessive daytime sleepiness (hypersomnia), abnormal timing of sleep wake cycles (circadian rhythm disorder), and abnormal stages of sleep (parasomnia).

Sleep Apnea is a sleeping disorder where something will usually get in the way of breathing while you are asleep. The throat and tongue muscles relax during sleep and can sometimes block the airway, making it difficult to breathe. The small fleshy tissue at the back of your throat can also block your airway. The air that is already inside of your body has no way of getting out and the fresh air that the body needs cannot enter. Eventually the brain will send an emergency alert for breath, causing you to wake up. Causes of sleep apnea are obesity, physical abnormalities, genetic factors, drugs, gender, snoring, sleep deprivation, and other medical disorders. Sleep Apnea occurs in all age groups and both sexes but is more common in men and possibly young African Americans.

Parasomnias are very common in young children and do not usually indicate significant psychiatric or psychological problems. The term parasomnia refers to a wide variety of sleep related disruptions. The most common type of parasomnias is disorders of arousal, which include confusion, sleepwalking, and sleep terrors. The arousals occur when the person is in a mixed state of being sleep and awake. Two of the most common types are nightmares and night terrors. Other types of parasomnias are nocturnal seizures, rapid eye movement, sleep starts, rhythmic- movement disorder, sleep talking, and teeth grinding.

Nightmares are often confused with the parasomnia known as night terrors. Nightmares can be about almost anything, but they always cause fear in the dreamer. Danger and embarrassment are two common themes in nightmares. Many people dream of failing in some endeavor that they care about. Nightmares occur most commonly in children between the ages of - 6 years old. Their dreams usually involve some danger or threat to the child like being chased or being teased. They may also involve a monster, ghost, fierce animal, or bad individual. Causes of nightmares are developmental, genetic, psychological, and organic factors can contribute to occurrence. Treatment is usually not needed for nightmares. Most people stop having nightmares after childhood; however, they can cause severe stress in some people. Having nightmares frequently can reduce the amount of sleep a person gets and cause symptoms of sleep deprivation such as poor concentration, daytime sleepiness, and irritability. It can eventually lead to mental illnesses such as anxiety disorder or depression.

Another common parasomnia is night terror. Night terrors are episodes of extreme panic and confusion associated with vocalization, movement, and autonomic discharge. Symptoms of night terrors are sudden awakening form sleep, persistent fear or terror that occurs at night, screaming, sweating, confusion, rapid heart rate, inability to explain what happened, usually no recall of bad dreams, or nightmares. Many people see spiders, snakes, animals or people in the room, are unable to fully awake, difficult to comfort, with no memory of the event on awakening the next day. Night terrors run in families, can last 10- 0 minutes, occur in stage four of the sleep cycle, and can happen at any age from 6 months to 100 years old.

Circadian Sleep Disorders are advanced sleep phase syndrome, delayed sleep phase syndrome, jet lag, and shift work sleep disorder. Our bodies are programmed to sleep two times a day once at night and again in the early afternoon. When it begins to get dark outside your retina sends a signal to a cluster of nerve cells in your brain that it's time to sleep. The restless leg syndrome is characterized by uncomfortable feelings in the legs, usually in the calf area. These feelings occur during times of rest such as when a person sits for an extended period of time or during sleep. Many people describe the feeling in their legs as a crawling sensation, like an electric current, an itching sensation, aching, like worms crawling under the skin, painful or like a burning sensation.

Insomnia is the continual difficulty of falling or staying asleep that affects daytime activities. It is not a disease. It is usually a symptom of another problem. Insomnia is more common in older adults. There are two types of insomnia. First there is primary insomnia, which is a chronic condition with little apparent association with stress or a medical problem. The most common form of primary insomnia is psycho physiological insomnia. Transient insomnia lasts for a few days to a few weeks, and transient insomnia that comes and goes is called intermittent insomnia.

Narcolepsy is a sleeping disorder characterized by periods of irresistible sleepiness. Theses " sleep attacks" happen without warning and can occur even after a good night's rest. They normally lasts about 0 minutes. After waking up the person feels refreshed, only to feel sleepy again a few hours later. Narcolepsy usually occurs in teenagers and young adults. It is a lifelong condition, but people can manage it and continue to be productive. There are no known medical consequences of this disorder, but it can cause traffic accidents and can affect a person's social and professional life.

"How doth the little crocodile improve his shining tale, and pour the waters of the Nile on every golden scale! How cheerfully he seems to grin, how neatly spread his claws, and welcome little fishes in with gently smiling jaws!" How often do you question the simple things in everyday life? Does your mind wander and take interest in small, seemingly pointless attributes of your day… or do you let the everyday simplicities of life pass by with out ever stopping to wonder if there could be more? The previous excerpt from Alice In Wonderland simulates the feelings and thoughts that Louis L'Amour entertains himself with daily. Every reader should learn from L'Amour and apply new techniques to his or her lifestyle in order to achieve a more vivid and colorful outlook on life. Not only does L'Amour's open-minded style of living affect everyone he meets, but also opens up many new possibilities of learning. L'Amour's extreme interest in life dates back to his earlier years. He shows us how he does not allow society to govern the way he lives his life, but discovers new ways to gain the knowledge and respect that his fellow peers have obtained.

According to the pre-reading in Louis L'Amour's Education Of A Wandering Man, "L'Amour dropped out of high school when he was 15 and wandered around the country, working odd jobs as a lumberjack, elephant handler, and longshoreman." The background that L'Amour holds clearly shows us how uniquely he chose to live his life. Unlike fellow classmates, L'Amour makes the decision to go against society's norm, and drop out of school. Not knowing whether one day he will settle down with a steady job, L'Amour's personality simply cannot let the pressures of society distract him from enjoying the small, unique jobs that unfold before him. However, L'Amour eventually finds the career that not only supports his lifestyle, but also allows him to share his thoughts and feelings with the world. After serving in World War II, L'Amour becomes a writer; publishing over three books a year using this newly discovered love of writing.

L'Amour's personality is not the only decerning point in his ability to be so very intuitive and open-minded. There are many factors of influence, one of which is L'Amours way of thinking. By definition, the theory of the structure and functions of the mind suggests that the two different sides of the brain control two different "modes" of thinking. It also states that each person prefers one "mode" from the other. L'Amour most likely exercises the right side of the brain. Experimentation has shown that the right side of the brain is random, intuitive, holistic, and subjective. It is possible to exercise the right side of the brain by creative thinking and art. This synthesizing way of thinking is partly what led L'Amour through his life and molded him into the man he has become. It is what upheld his interest in life and motivated his wandering curiosity. This learning style allowed L'Amore to become what he really and truly wanted to be as oppose to choosing a career solely for money and possessions. The learning style of Louis L'Amour is very new and unknown by most but can be just as useful and efficient as the more logical standards of learning used by most.

Louis L'Amore has an effect on each and every person he meets whether it is a positive or negative one. To me, L'Amore is a very interesting person of whom I look up to and would like to be so care free and allow myself to not have to uphold to standards of society but instead be happy with life itself. I am astounded at how he became of such great wealth and fame by simply living his life the way he pleased and giving only thought to the things that interest him. However, not all people are able to accept the fact that L'Amore did not go to college or any institution and has nothing to owe his wealth and knowledge to but himself. "Once, when hitchhiking, I was picked up by a professor from some small college. The professor was a pedantic man of limited imagination and seemed almost offended that I was reading such a book. Obviously I did not fit some category in which he decided I belonged, and when he dropped me off in town, I suspect he was relived to be rid of me." This Passage written by L'Amore proves the fact that L'Amore himself has effects on the people he meets everyday. The professor, with his "limited imagination" decides that L'Amore could in no way or fashion ever live up to the standard that the normal everyday college student upholds. It seems to insult the professor that L'Amore is even reading such a book without being told to when in fact the professor himself is not even as knowledgeable as L'Amore. Instead of taking advice from L'Amore, the professor would rather go about his everyday life, being too proud to ever consider the thought that L'Amore might be just as knowledgeable as himself, without a college degree.

Every reader should learn from L'Amore and take interest in the small everyday things. Even though L'Amore was just living his life, not trying to make an impression on anyone, he ended up impacting the world with his thoughts and ideas. L'Amore's combination of personality, learning style, choices, and thoughts make him into the extraordinary man he has become, if anything readers should really read into his works and try to understand his complex style of living a little better. The world would be so much more interesting if everyone could take the small things in life and further the imagination, who knows what one could discover with an open-mind and wandering imagination!

Home schooling for Handicapped Children

More and more parents with handicapped children are unhappy with the education their children have been getting. The main reason for this is that public schools are not focusing on the child's needs. So parents have been taking the education in there own hands by home schooling their mentally handicapped children. The parents are upset because the schools are not meeting their children's needs. So the parents have been taking the education in there own hands by home schooling their mentally handicapped children. The parents are upset because the schools are not meeting their children's needs their specific needs, their individual needs, and their academic needs. The parents have found that having their child at home has given the parent and the child a stronger bond than when they were in school. There are more benefits to a child being at home then at school. They are healthier, and don't' get as much of the cold as the other children do, they don't have to be mad fun of and come crying home every night.

Parents have become more independent for their children's education cause the schools have not been taking it into consideration and their specific needs are not being met.. Because the schools have to go by a certain curriculum all students are marked the same way. They are expected to complete everything that the other students are doing in the same amount of time, and with the same amount of help. For Example, "Children with ADD have a very hard time staying focused on one thing at a time and they can be easily distracted, which makes it difficult for them to accomplish their work, in the same amount of time" (Hayes, 000,p). Because of this type of treatment, the parents have taken

school into their own hands and home. If the child that is being home schooled has ADD it's easier for them to concentrate and get the job done in less time then they would get it done in class, which could make them get the job done in the same period of time as other children. They can also accomplish more when they feel comfortable with asking the parent for help when they don't understand. By home schooling them they are given an equal chance to graduate school at the same time as their classmates, and they would be graduating at a higher grade level, then they would be if they were at school.

Parents who have taken home schooling as the road for educating their children have taken it because schools are not meeting the students individual needs. The schools have become so big and there are to many students for one teacher to teach, which makes it easier for the shy and slower children to slip down the cracks. "At the end of the year if a student is lacking in reading but doing well in the other subjects in school, the child will be held back to repeat the grade again" (Hensley, 15, p.101). If the schools had less students and more teachers this problem would be addressed and worked on they would not have to repeat the grade again. Also by just failing one grade the student could feel like they have failed, which to a handicapped child is a big deal, because they will try to avoid other tasks for fear of failing. Unfortunately public schools do not have tutoring for anyone, they do not have the time to work one-on-one with a student, they have to many things to accomplish in a day to help a child for a long period of time. If the handicapped child has home schooling the parents knows it's weak spots in school and their strong

points, so they can focus on the weak points, and the parent doesn't have anyone else to attend to so the child gets full attention. The child does not have to wait on the teacher to come to them, and they don't have to worry about having their hand up for most of the class. Home schooling is meeting the individual needs of their handicapped children better than at a school with one teacher and many students.

The academic needs of handicapped children are not being met. Parents expect that their handicapped children will be taught at a level that will be appropriate for them, and at a level that will make them feel comfortable. Parents also expect that they will be teaching them the basic things in all subjects. But Schools in Canada are failing to do so. Recent studies show that .0 million who graduate there are 1% that cannot read or write at a grade eight level or functionally literate level (www.StatisticCanada.com-Education, 00) This is awful for our country since it's suppose to be so developed. Handicapped children rank in the 50% range while home schooled handicapped children rank between 60 and 7%These statistics show that home schooling compared to public education is better for the child (education press). Handicapped children receive a better education when there are less distractions and there is more attention available for them.

By no means are public schools a negative atmosphere for children, but for handicapped children it can make the learning experience a lot harder for them. This is why parents are jumping straight into home schooling for their children. Not only is the child benefiting from it, the parent also benefits to know on hand how the child is progressing in school and the target areas that they need to work on. The society benefits also. By educating the child to the best of their ability will help the individual to obtain a job and live a successful life. The facts show that handicapped children can learn just as fast as non-handicapped children when they are being taught at home with full attention. They are having their needs met, and they are getting an equal chance to be as close to normal in school curriculum to their peers. Home school is currently the best way to go about if you have a handicapped child that is being over looked, and not having their needs met to the fullest.

Introduction

This assignment deals with an investigation into the buyer behaviour and buying patterns of consumers with respect to ice-creams. The fundamental issues that we start off by addressing are those of why people buy ice-creams and what they look for in an ice-cream. The realization of what needs of a consumer are addressed by an ice-cream will be crucial in not only tailoring our product to those needs but also in demarcating the various segments.

Several attributes of ice-creams needed by buyers were listed but it was unclear as to what the relative importance of each of these was. With an eye on determining this relative importance, a survey was conducted wherein the attributes were ranked by the respondents and given a total overall rank each. The survey also aimed at exploring various other facets of buyer behaviour through pointed questions and a mix of multiple-choice and open-ended answers.

The various issues the survey looked to throw some light upon are

· Brand-consciousness levels among the consumers

· Favourite flavours

· Price-sensitivity

· Other factors such as place of consumption, ethos of consumption etc.

Survey Analysis

The survey was conducted among students belonging to the -6 years age group. The attributes ranked by the respondents are goodness of taste, flavour used, colour, type/variety (such as sticks, cones etc.), price, brand and dealer. The results of the survey are tabulated below.

Respondent no. 1 4 5 average

Taste 1 1 1 1.6

Flavour 1 1 1.6

Colour 5 7 6 6 7 6.

Type (form) 4 4 6 5 4.4

Price 7 6 5 4 5

Brand 4 4 .

Dealers 6 5 7 6 6 6

Clearly, the taste and the flavour of the ice-cream are its most important attributes. They have a mean ranking of 1.6 each on a scale of 7. The brand is rated next, with a mean ranking of . followed by type or form of the ice-cream (4.4). The price, the dealers and the colour of the ice-cream were found to be pretty low down on the priority list of the consumer.

Very often ice-creams are chosen on the brand name alone. The respondents were asked about whether they based their buying on brands. Two out of five respondents were brand-conscious, another two were undecided and one answered in the negative.

The question of favourite flavour received a large variety of responses. Vanilla, strawberry and chocolate are the dominating flavours.

Price-sensitivity is low in the results of the survey. Three out of five members replied that they were not price sensitive, and one said he was sometimes price sensitive.

Buyers use ice-cream in different ways. Some buyers said they felt that ice-creams brought people closer, whereas some others felt that ice-creams were cool and they are consumed for fun. There was a high rate of coincidence between the people who ate the ice-cream with family at home and those who thought ice-cream helped create bonds between people. There was also a high rate of coincidence between those people who ate ice-cream outdoors with their friends at shopping malls and eat-outs, and those who thought ice-cream was meant for having fun. These aspects of buyer behaviour are crucial in linking the different habits buyers have.

Buying process

Ice creams are often an impulse purchase. As such the buying process for purchase of ice-creams takes very little time. The decisions that have to be made while buying an ice-cream are what flavour to buy, what type (form) to buy, what brand to use and what quantity or price to buy.

It is important to note that these are not sequential steps in the buying process. Often some of these steps are skipped. Often these steps happen in varying orders. The buying decision for ice-creams is not very structured. Part of the reason could be that the effect of buying an ice-cream lasts only for a very short time. The investment of money in the decision is also low. As such there is no post-purchase behaviour from the consumer here except for the fact that the experience of using one ice-cream influences his decision the next time.

An attempt has been made to come up with a time frame for the decisions made by the consumer while buying an ice-cream.

Time Steps involved in buying

1 - 5 min Deciding on flavour

1 - min Deciding the type

1 min Deciding on brand

0.5 - min Deciding the Quantity/Price

.5 - 10 min Total

Market Segmentation

The segmentation of the ice-cream market can be done in three ways flavour of ice-cream, type of ice-cream consumed (cones, sticks etc.) and the social need satisfied by the ice-cream.

The main flavours in the Indian market are vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. Together these constitute more than 70% of the market share in India. The survey conducted during the assignment showed 4 out of five people liking one of these three flavours.

The next way of segmentation depends on the Type. It can be broadly segmented as cups, cones, bars/sticks. Out of the 5 respondents of he survey respondents preferred cones, one preferred cup and one was indifferent.

The next parameter to segment is Social need. Here we take a look at what an ice cream means to a consumer and what purpose it serves to him. For example, some people consider eating ice cream as an activity that brings the family together. Some youngsters eat ice creams with friends and view it as an activity that represents their youth. Hence we can segment the market into consumers at home, consumers with friends and consumers who eat alone.

Historical China represents a cultural, and, most of the time as well, a political unity. But the country was not completely ignorant of or entirely untouched by outside influences. There had always been contact with Central Asia and India, the center of another great civilization at the time. And this happened especially through the spread of the Buddhist religion. India, in contrast to China, had often been more politically fragmented than unified. For this reason, India never posed a real threat to China and her sense of self-importance. As a religion of foreign origin from India to China, Buddhism in the Chinese context, between Islam and Judaism on the one side as ethnic religions, and Buddhism and West Christianity on the other side as missionary religions. However, the beginnings of Buddhism behaved somewhat differently to Chinese culture, arousing much more attention as well as controversy as it attempted to make its impact upon the Chinese society.

At 1st century A.D. or earlier, this religion of Indian origin had already undergone several centuries of development both in theory and practice. It acted as a harbinger of civilization in many areas, introducing knowledge of Indian languages and scripts, especially Sanskrit and eventually a technical vocabulary in Chinese for translation purpose, also inspiring art, literature and philosophy. But China was already home to a vigorous civilization with an ancient canon the Confucian classics and time hallowed traditions. The meeting of the Buddhism religion and Chinese culture was a momentous one, marking an encounter between the Indian worldview and the Chinese. In many ways, the pre-Buddhist Chinese ways of seeing things was much closer to the Western ways than to the Indian. The idea that all creatures possess the Buddha-nature and are capable of attaining to Buddha hood, linked to the doctrine of karma and the belief in rebirth, was attractive to rich and poor alike . Buddhist scholars were all the time seeking to interpret their religion in such a way as to make it attractive to the Chinese.

The growth of Buddhism was achieved in spite of the fact that in several respects, its ideas and teachings were opposed to indigenous culture. The Chinese held the view that life is good and to be enjoyed, and this went counter to the Buddhist teaching that all is suffering and illusion . The Buddhist practice of celibacy was inimical to the Chinese emphasis on family life and the need for numerous progeny. The mendicant monk was on object of scorn to those who believed that all able-bodied people should be engaged in productive labour. The concept of a monastic community possessing its own government and laws was entirely unacceptable to the Confucian, who believed in the unity of the empire less than one supreme ruler. Yet in a time of lawlessness and confusion it was the monastery that provided refuge for the disillusioned scholar and the multitude that sought escape from the difficulties and burdens of life. Buddhism offered an irresistible appeal just where Confucianism had failed.

Though the various schools of Chinese Buddhism are seen best in their period of fullest development under the Tang dynasty, the roots of most of them go back to the fifth and sixth centuries and even earlier. It must be borne in mind that, when Buddhism became firmly established in China, Indian Buddhism had been flourishing for about a thousand years. ¡¥The Chinese, with their deeply ingrained confidence in the written word, accepted the Buddhist scriptures in Chinese translation as the word of the Buddha¡¦ . The different Buddhist sects in China resulted largely from the fact that the volume of translated Buddhist scriptures had grown so vast the few scholars could hope to be reasonably familiar with them all, and the teachings contained in them were so extremely diverse as to appear at times to be contradictory. Furthermore, as the writings of the great Indian Mahayanist writers became familiar in Chinese translation, Chinese Buddhist scholars, stimulating new currents of thought, avidly seized upon their distinctive interpretations of the Buddhist dharma. Though all the scriptures were treated as canonical, schools arose under distinguished teachers who adopted widely different interpretations truth, and claimed that they presented the quintessence and perfection of the Buddha¡¦s message.

If Buddhism was to continue as an effective religious force in China there was need for drastic reform and an intellectual awakening. Towards the end of the Ching dynasty this began to gradually take place and gathered momentum during the early decades of the twentieth century. This was in large the result of the stimulus of Christianity and Western influences. The account of the reforms instituted in 180-147 and the intellectual awakening which goes back to180-111, together with the set-back to Buddhism, and indeed to all religions through the rise of a militant Communism, will be dealt on the religious situation in modern China.

Event Handlers

What is an event?

event /vent/ noun

"a thing that happens, especially important"

Essay help on Event handlers

"Every time the user types a character or pushes a mouse button, an event occurs. Any object can be notified of the event. All it has to do is implement the appropriate interface and be registered as an event listener on the appropriate event source. "

The above definition can be found at the java.sun.com web site, it is concise but not very clear in helping to understand in layman's terms what exactly is represented by an "event". A better analogy to the various parts of an event, as intended in Java with sources, listeners etc, could be represented, maybe, by a mother and her child at the park. As a parallelism to Java we can consider the child and mother as two "components". The sandbox where the child is playing as a "panel" that contains the child and the bench where the mother is reading a as another "panel". And, finally, the park as the "frame" that contains these two "panels". As we can see we have basically all the components of a GUI. Now, in trying to create the analogy to events in event driven programming, we can consider the child as the object that can create an event (the "source" object) and the mother as another object that is "registered" to listen to events created by the "source". If the child, for example, falls in the sandbox, it may start to cry. The crying of the child is an "event". And we can extend the analogy to Java by saying that the child "creates" a crying noise, just like in Java a source object creates an event object. Among the various people in the park the child's mother is "registered" to listen to the events created by her child. And she will consequently, receive the event object (the crying noise of her child) and will "react" to it according to the necessities of the event.

The actions taken by the mother represent the notion of event handling. She performs certain tasks determined by the nature of the event that she just "heard" form the source object.

We can now leave this analogy and try to define in a more precise way, at least from a Java programming language point of view, what happens when an event is generated. A source object creates an event object and this event object is passed to any other object that has been registered to listen to the event generated by the source object. Once the "listening" object has received the event object, it will react to it by executing the appropriate methods defined in its "event handler". Therefore an event handler in Java can be defined as a class that defines the way in which to respond to particular events.

EVENT HANDLERS

Event handlers are the classes that define how a "listening" object will respond to particular events generated by the "Source" objects the listener object is registered to. There are many different kinds of components in Java and each of these can create different kinds of events. The listening objects will therefore have to implement different classes of event handlers based on the different events that can be generated by the object that they are listening to. A few examples of events and the listener classes that are used with those events are

Event Listener type

User clicks a button, ActionListener

User closes a frame (main window) WindowListener

User presses a mouse button MouseListener

User moves the mouse over a component MouseMotionListener

Component becomes visible ComponentListener

Component gets the keyboard focus FocusListener

Table or list selection changes ListSelectionListener

There are therefore many different classes of eventListener classes that we can use to implement our event handlers, each with different methods to implement the reaction to the specific events. But, even if they implement different eventListener classes, all event handlers must have, in some form, the following three required bits of code

1) In the declaration for the event handler class, code that specifies that the class either implements a listener interface or extends a class that implements a listener interface.

) Code that registers an instance of the event handler class as a listener upon one or more components.

) Code that implements the methods in the listener interface.

In the following example we can easily identify the three required parts of code for eventhandling (in red)

import javax.swing.JApplet;

import javax.swing.JButton;

import java.awt.Toolkit;

import java.awt.BorderLayout;

import java.awt.event.ActionListener;

import java.awt.event.ActionEvent;

public class Beeper extends JApplet

implements ActionListener { ᠖ requirement 1

JButton button;

public void init() {

button = new JButton(Click Me);

getContentPane().add(button, BorderLayout.CENTER);

button.addActionListener(this); ᠖ requirement

}

public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) { ᠖ requirement

Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().beep();

}

}

Taking a closer look at the example code above we can explain the various parts in the following way. To detect when the user clicks the on-screen button, the program has have an object that implements the ActionListener interface. The program registers as an action listener on the button (the event source), using the addActionListener method. When the user clicks the on-screen button, the button fires an action event. This results in the invocation of the action listeners actionPerformed method. The single argument to the method is an ActionEvent object that gives information about the event and its source. It is important to know also that ActionPerformed is the ONLY method defined in ActionListener and it must be implemented.

Macbeth.

Shakespeare found the story of Macbeth in "The History of Scotland" and used it as the basis for the play performed for James the VI of Scotland and I of England. The true version was altered by Shakespeare to make Banquo innocent with Macbeth being the sole murderer of Duncan. James was descended from Banquo and Fleance. However, this play is not about the history, although it lends an added edge. It is a play that teaches us the old lesson, crime does not pay, but we also have the suspense of a gripping and bloody murder story.

Most interestingly, through the close study of the character of Macbeth, we see very clearly the effects of ambition, uncontrolled ambition, on a man who is basically of good intent, who clearly knows right from wrong……and whose guilt at committing the most terrible crime lead him to extreme paranoia. Shakespeare takes us on a journey through Macbeth's descent from one foul deed to another.

Macbeth is a complex character, first mentioned by the Third Witch in scene one. We hear about him firstly through narrative we do not see him.

Instead Shakespeare has decided that we should learn about Macbeth from other characters. It allows him to paint a picture in our minds, which he then twists as the plot demands. Initially all is well. In Scene where Duncan is camped, a badly wounded Sergeant meets Duncan, Malcolm, Donalbain and Lennox. Malcolm tells him to tell the king his "knowledge of the broil," as he saw it.

Shakespeare makes it clear that the sergeant is biased towards Macbeth and Banquo. The first words the sergeant speaks of Macbeth tells us he is brave, fearless his sword "smok'd with bloody execution" he is described as the favourite of truth and bravery as he fights his way through. It is clear that Shakespeare wants us to see him as brave and valiant. The sergeant goes on to use the phrases "brave Macbeth,"and describes how he "fixed his head upon our battlements." Having first "cut him from the nave to the chaps." This refers to the traitor MacDonwald.

I think that Shakespeare makes Macbeth do these things to show that he is ruthless, and capable of killing in a one to one situation.

Duncan cannot fail to be impressed with this hero! And Shakespeare makes even more of him in the next statements. The sergeant goes on to claim that, Macbeth is powerful like a lion and clever like the eagle. He tells us that Banquo and Macbeth were "cannons overcharged with double cracks", in other words they are exploding with the aggression needed to win the day.

Ross appears to add his description of Macbeth's deeds to the account. He describes Macbeth as "Bellona's bridegroom" Bellona being the goddess of war. Macbeth now stands against the Thane of Cawdor, and beats him. Successfully "The victory fell on us." From this I think Shakespeare wants to portray a man who is brave on the battlefield and is respected by everyone. There is no hint of him being vindictive or malicious in any way.

So by the end of Scene , we are almost expecting a superhero to fly onto the stage. But, we must remember the play has been introduced by three witches, symbols of evil, who are going to meet with him. So Shakespeare wants us to have a certain feeling of unease. This cannot be entirely wholesome.

Scene opens with the three Witches, waiting for the arrival of Macbeth and Banquo. They are discussing their evil intentions when a drum announces the arrival of Macbeth. "Macbeth doth come." Macbeth's first words, "so foul and fair a day I have not seen," echo almost exactly the words the witches use to end the first scene. "fair is foul and foul is fair." Are they letting us in on the fact that all is not as it seems? I think that Shakespeare makes a point of returning to this theme of foul and fair to remind us that nothing is ever exactly what it seems. Our superhero has feet of clay.

Initially on meeting the Witches, Macbeth is afraid, they know so much about him and their predictions arouse his fear. Banquo can sense a catch but is amazed by Macbeth's reaction he asks him, "why do you fear things that sound so fair?"

The predictions scare him because he does not know whether he should react to them rationally or not. This is a soldier who has just fought a bloody battle, he is a man that Shakespeare has portrayed as a doer not a thinker. But he is ambitious. He wants more from them, "stay you imperfect speakers…….speak I charge you." Now Shakespeare is letting us see his ambition more clearly, Macbeth's conscience tells him murder is not the way, his ambition says otherwise. How could he murder Duncan "whose murder yet is but fantastical." He tries not to think about committing this foul deed, perhaps if chance has made him Thane of Cawdor, then "chance will have me king," is his idea.

In this scene Shakespeare has given us a turning point in the character's make-up. He is clearly even more ruthless than we first thought. The witches have sown the seed of the idea of becoming king and it will become the obsession that is his undoing.

When Duncan, who makes Macbeth Thane of Cawdor, says that just because a man acts honourably and looks like a respectable gentleman, doesn't mean you can trust him is a lovely touch by Shakespeare. Duncan is talking about the previous Thane who betrayed him, and we now know that Macbeth is thinking about going one step further than even that. Shakespeare makes Macbeth appear sly and conniving in his flattery of the king. "Your highness part is to receive your duties and our duties are to your throne and state".

Throughout the play, we find that Shakespear manipulates Macbeth s character through subtle changes. At first he appears to be a brave and honourable soldier. However, his character proves to be more complex. There is a darker side to him; his weakness, his greed and ambition leads him to contemplate the murder of the king

Does music influence a persons mood and behaviour?

I am trying to find out whether music influences a persons mood or behaviour. I will be searching the Internet for information of events due to music and peoples opinions. I will also be designing a questionnaire for people of different ages to share their views on this question. Without a doubt this project will be almost 100% opinion based as there is no scientific evidence to prove anything I am trying to find out.

There has been one, big recent event to show that metropolitan police do blame music and band members for violence in the community. This event would be and being shot dead in Aston due to a gang shoot out in a territorial situation. 'So solid crew' (a music band) have been blamed for influencing these gang members. Three members of the band have been in trouble with the law regarding gun crimes. At their concerts, they, and people in the crowd have been in possession of guns. One of the band members (Asher D) was put in prison last year due to a gun crime. Statistics show that gun related crime has doubled in the past five years.

Whilst looking for information on the Internet I came across a website that asked members of the public the same question that I am trying to answer in this piece of work. The ages of the respondents ranged between thirteen and nineteen. Opinions seemed to vary very much so. Some said yes due to their beliefs of us reacting subconsciously etc and some said no. One comment suggested that only the weak minded were affected. A female of fifteen years of age wrote…'music can alter the way we think about certain things…but! "can it load a gun up for you and cock it too?" ' The double quoted is a lyric by Eminem defending himself as he has been blamed countless amounts of times for influencing youths via his music.

Lyrics are either direct references (e.g. where a drug is named) or indirect references (where the drug is not named). Some see this as irrelevant as the listener will interpret it however they want to hear it and will be influenced (if at all) in that effect. People react to their perceptions, not reality. I found a table in which the contents ranged from 116 which included song titles, artists and the drug the lyrics referenced to. Here are a few abstracted…

YEAR SONG TITLE PERFORMER APPARENT DRUG REFERNCE

1 Texas Tea Party Benny Goodman and his orchestra Marijuana

144 Who put the Benzedrine in Mrs. Murphy's oval tine Harry "the hipster" Gibbon Amphetamines/Nembutal

166 Mothers little helper The rolling stones Valium

17 Speedball tucker Jim Croce Amphetamines

177 The joker The Steve Miller band Marijuana

184 The smuggler's blues Glenn Frey Cocaine & Marijuana

18 City of dope Too short Crack Cocaine, Marijuana

16 This is a call Foo fighters Ritalin

Some people would feel that the music/the tune of a song would influence them and others would say it would be the lyrics. Different styles of music have very different kinds of lyrics. Some people may be very open minded until they begin to take interest in a band which discriminates as this could possibly change their views. For examplethere is a ska band called Reel Big Fish and one of their tracks is called "TRENDY".

The lyrics are as follows…

Depending on how easily people are influenced, it is possible that this song could change a persons view on trends, persuade them to discriminate and change their taste in music.

When bands perform on stage, they set influences whether they realise it or not. Most members in the crowd react to the lyrics in general. Cyprus hill smoke a lot of cannabis on stage with really tall bongs etc. Eminem was on stage with a chainsaw which represented the lyrics to one of his songs and caused chaos in the press etc. Bands such as Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, and Pink Floyd sing with reference to drugs and an amazing amount of people in the crowd smoke cannabis whilst they play on stage. At more recent concerts such as Slipknot, Korn, sysyem of a down and many more heavy rock bands see vicious fights within the crowd. In some situations people in the crowd even get stabbed.

Music may have a little affect on a person along with peer pressure-the influence overall may be very strong. Recently a lot of people seem to be changing their appearance by wearing different clothes, hairstyles and accessories. People have been wearing the latest sports labels and have suddenly started to wear baggy jeans and hoodies (representing certain bands). This used to be an expression of individuality but is now becoming a trend. There are children aged seven to thirteen wearing sports trousers and a heavy rock hoody. If they wear their clothes to express their personality then they have a mixed one. At the moment there is a lot of labelling taking place. Jeans and hoodies represent an alternative person and clothes from chain stores and sports labels represent people to be like others. To mix these is just silly but that is what people are doing. In my opinion, children as young as 11 should not be exposed to Slipknot lyrics. What is shown on the T.V before ten pm is cut but parents need to be more aware of what their younger children are listening to.

I have designed a questionnaire to ask people of all ages their opinion on the way music influences others. Here is an example…

Advertising and the Message it Sends about Weight

Thin is in. Many companies, regardless of their products, use unrealistic looking models in their advertisements. They try to make a connection between beauty and their products. It's done in TV ads, on Magazine covers, and in magazine ads. In the last couple of decades the importance of beauty has become more prevalent in society. As sexier ads became more acceptable the models started to shrink in size. The models now used are on average are 5'8" a size 4 and weigh 10lbs. This is what advertising companies portray as beauty, although really less than 1% of the population is that size. Thin instead of curvy is now seen as beautiful. Models are often viewed as the ideal female body type by both men and women. They use women's insecurities and need to be beautiful to sell their products. This type of advertising sends the message that this is what beautiful people look like, some ads even go as far to suggest that fat is being fat is unacceptable and that message can have detrimental effects on society.

Most clothing companies advertising campaigns use super skinny models in their ads. These ads are stereotypical of today's superficial society. More and more emphasis is being placed on appearance. The advertisers use these models because the clothes look good on them, which then make their clothes look appealing and help them to sell. If an overweight person were to model the same clothes they probably wouldn't look as good to the reader. This is because society has become obsessed with thinness; which in part is due to these thin models are being held as the standard for beauty. These ads are everywhere; in fact it's hard to find a magazine that doesn't contain these ads.

The real challenge would be to try to find a fashion ad, from a major name brand, containing a plus size woman. My two of my ads were taken from a seventeen magazine. There were numerous fashion ads containing the typical skinny model while I couldn't find a single one containing a plus size woman. This is sending the message to young women that these skinny models are what beauty is because this is all they are being shown. The lack of plus size women in fashion advertising is one cause for thin models being the standard for beauty.

Many companies in the fashion industry advertise the same way. They use tall thin models in their ads to sell clothes. Two examples of this advertising technique are the HotKiss and Stephen Hardy ads. The HotKiss ad shows a model advertising the name brands jeans. The women in both ads are positioned similarly with one leg and one arm out to the side. She has he chin and nose tipped up condescendingly. The positioning implies that she is above the reader. The Stephen Hardy model has a haughty look on her face which implies she's superior to the reader. Also on the ad is the word "squeeze" which gives off a connotation of "try to be smaller (thinner)". The difference in their facial expressions and the energy in their poses don't affect the message that the ads send. Both ads seem to be sending the same message of superiority and "this is what you want to look like so buy our name brands clothes".

The Nutri-Grain bar ad shows a thin model in her bra and underwear lying seductively on the ground. The model in this ad like the two others has an "I'm better than you look on her face", which implies that she is better than the reader because she is thin. The ad says "respect yourself in the morning" and there is a croissant placed on the woman's hip. This suggests by eating a Nutri-Grain bar for breakfast instead of some fattening food you're respecting yourself. Also the croissant is placed on the hip to represent the fat she would've gained by eating it. The ad is sending the message that this thin model is beautiful. To respect yourself you should be thin like her and you can accomplish this by eating Nutri-Grain bars.

All the ads try to sell their product by using a thin beautiful woman to advertise it, but their perception of beauty is what is causing the problem. When women see these super thin models wearing the cute jeans they want the jeans to fit them the way they fit the models, and most of the time they won't. The ads send the message that thin is beautiful and that you should want to look like these models. These ads can have negative affects on women and society. The HotKiss, Stephen Hardy, and Nutri-Grain bar ads all have tall thin models advertising their products. Most women will never look like that, but many try to. The obsession with weight and beauty can lead to eating disorders, distorted body image, and unrealistic weight goals; all of which can lead to low self-esteem. Eating disorders have become extremely common in recent years as the model size, which is often seen as the ideal size, keeps decreasing.

This advertising technique of using thin models to sell products must be effective because so many major companies use it. Women today feel pressure on them to look like these super skinny models. So they by companies products; whether it's clothes, food, or one of many other numerous products to try to achieve the model look. Beauty sells products and makes money. Companies need to stop being so concerned with making money and start being concerned with the message they're sending to women and society. The association between weight and beauty, and society's obsession with thinness is largely advertising companies fault and has had many negative effects.

Censorship has recently been brought to the American public television in two different ways. One being $1 billion in airtime purchased by the Office for National Drug Control and the other method being through a small chip inside all new television sets.

In 17, congress approved a $1billion plan by the Office for National Drug Control to buy Network advertising time at a reduced rate. (Forbes 1) This is a five-year plan that legally requires any network that participates a dollar-for-dollar match for each spot purchased by the government by carrying public service ads by nonprofit groups working with the National Drug Control Policy (NDCP). (Kurtz, Waxman 1) This policy was made attractive to networks by offering credits to those networks that aired television shows that involved so-called "negative-influence" on drugs. The credits enabled the networks to resell the slots that have already been paid for by the government to advertisers. Some of the shows that earned these credits are "ER", "Chicago Hope", "Beverly Hills 010", "Touched by an Angel", "The Cosby Show", "Home Improvement", "7th Heaven", "The Drew Carey Show", and "Sabrina the Teenage Witch". This attempt at censorship by the government is simply ridiculous. Not only are they bribing the networks to air government controlled T.V. shows but they are also selling back slots that are already paid for by American tax dollars to the networks whose purpose was to inform the public of drugs! "Sneaking" the governments' messages into popular T.V. shows isn't going to solve the Americas' drug problem or make a show better. I would much rather see networks airing anti-drug ads on their own. I would also rather see a writer's true story rather than a government interfered version. The following quote by a spokesperson for the drug control office, Robert Weiner, shows a pathetic attempt to persuade censorship "We're very proud of the accomplishments of the campaign….We plead guilty to using every lawful means to save America's children".

The Telecommunications Act of 16 implements the use of technology by using a computer chip called the v-chip installed into T.V. set to censor incoming programs being brought to our homes. According to FCC rule, the v-chip must be installed in all new television sets made after January 1,00. The v-chip is set up to work with a rating system established by the National Association of Broadcasters. The first 15 seconds when a television shows airs, the rating of the show is encoded and sent through the v-chip. If the v-chip is set up to allow that certain rating to be viewed then the show is seen. If the rating is not in acceptable range then the show is unable to be viewed through that television set. This seemed like a great idea to Bill Clinton who held this chip proudly as a symbol of philosopher stone for the electronic age. (Burke 1) Not all Americans have embraced the v-chip as expected. Some of the problems of the v-chip are that the users say it's too hard to use; it's inconvenient for an adult who want to watch blocked programs; it's too expensive for some to buy new televisions; the rating system may pass some shows that have material that parents do not agree with; and even thoughts of networks using it as a means to show more violent and sexually filled programs. The birth of the v-chip is a great tool for parents who complain about public television and can now be at ease that their children will not see most shows they deem unacceptable. For those who complain its too inconvenient can really be called lazy and yes it is possible for shows to have content parents feel is unacceptable. And I doubt networks using the v-chip as a reason to insert more sex and violence into their shows, I believe this is just a conservative parents stab at the thought they are ultimately responsible for their children's viewing habits. Also, no one is forcing anyone to buy a new television set. Although I do agree these can be legitimate problems, Americans need to understand this is a tool to help parents who want to censor shows being seen by their children and not an answer. The v-chip can be as great as the effort put into using it.

Cheap college papers on Censorship Via the Government and the V-Chip

These are just two of the many efforts of censorship of American television. As I looked carefully into both of these attempts, I can see when it came to drugs, the government plays a more active role in censorship. But trying to buy their way into network television in order to place government ideas into our favorite shows is not the way to go. Americans cannot also depend on the government to stop television from airing programs considered offensive to some. This would interfere with the first amendment. We need to understand that television is a useful tool used to entertain and to educate. Also that not all Americans have the same thoughts and beliefs, is that not what makes us Americans? Censorship is not the answer to our problems. If we do not know that a problem exists then how are we to solve it? Education is the answer.

Salvador Dali was born on Monday, May 11 104, in the small Spanish town of Figures, in the foothills of the Pyrenees, approximately sixteen miles from the French border in a region known as Catalonia. His parents supported his talent and built him his first studio while he was still a child in their summer home at Cadaques. Dali went on to attend the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid, Spain. He was married to Gala Eluard in 14 and died on January 18 in a hospital in Figures. Dali never limited himself to one style or particular medium.

The painting Metamorphosis of Narcissus was created in 17 by oil on canvas by Salvador Dali. This painting uses a lot of images to say what it means, for example, a person, a hand, water, a starving dog, a chess board, a canyon or cliff, and people. This is not to fill the paper or distract the viewer from the suggested meaning or point, but to support the idea that hope and despair are reflections of one another; on opposite sides of a coin, spinning in mid-air, waiting to land and fix or destroy everything.

The first thing that one thinks upon first seeing it, from far away, is that Dali just painted the same thing twice. From afar, it appears as if he simply cut the canvas down the middle and made one side brown and the other blue, but on closer inspection, one sees that the two sides, although very similar, are nothing alike.

On one side, there sits a limp body staring at the reflection of herself in the water that she sinks in. The setting sun glistens off the back of her head, but she just wallows in grim depression and boredom. The canyons trap her in the barren wasteland as she sits motionless, without movement, struggle, or life. This mysterious figure looks so vacant that it might as well be dead. Nothing is happening on this side, so ones attention is directed to the other.

On the other side, a blue decaying hand emerges from the ground with ants crawling on it, possibly making their homes in it or finding food on it. Atop this pedestal, rests an egg with a flower sprouting from it. This display of life emerging from the dead is a symbol of hope and beauty. To the left of the hand, a very unhealthy malnourished dog feasts on fresh meat; his salvation is handed to him and he survives. Behind the dog is a chess board with a young man in the middle of it, proudly surveying the battlefield as though it were his kingdom. To his left are people on a road that leads off into the horizon. All these things symbolize new beginnings out of old life and hope from death.

The message that Salvador Dali was trying to get across is that hope and despair, failure and victory, and life and death are all equal forces, each one pulling the other in an eternal war to balance everything. Its all a cycle, and like all cycles, it repeats itself forever and ever, and theres no way of having one without the other.

Guemica - Pablo Picasso

Pablo Picassos Guernica Pablo Picassos painting entitled Guernica has been a masterpiece of modern art since its first appearance at the World Fairs Fair of 17. The huge mural has become an icon of Picassos work and has been interpreted in several unique ways, many of which contradict Picassos actual intentions.

Artistically, the composition is balanced and is a characteristic of Picassos work; perfectly planned and flowing. The symbols of this piece despite the misconceptions of its many critics, including those present at the Worlds Fair in the year that the painting was introduced, were clearly defined by Picasso himself.

The preliminary sketches of the work began in May of 17, and was commissioned by the official Republican government of Spain in January of the same year. It was to be displayed in the International Spanish Pavilion at the 17 International Exhibition, or as it is more popularly known, the Worlds Fair. Picasso was given a large studio in which to conduct his artistic endeavors in partial payment for the work which was being done.

Picasso went through many artistic periods throughout his career as an artist, one of which was cubism. In a few ways, Guernica, somewhat broke from the traditional cubism which he had a hand in inventing. The painting makes use of a two dimensional picture plain with all of the objects on the canvas appear flat looking as is dictated by the cubism style. The picture plain is not, however, fractured like many of the previous works which were categorized under the same style.

Picassos reason for painting Guernica has been disputed by the many art critics of modern art, but perhaps the most accurate summary is the genius himself. Picasso explained that the work was not specifically about the bombing of Guernica, nor was it specifically about the Spanish Civil War which was the culprit in this destructive incident. It was rather a broad statement about human beings fighting amongst themselves, and the chaos which would ensue should such hateful human relationships be allowed to continue as they had in Guernica, Spain.

The organization of the piece was carefully planned in the forty-five preliminary sketches, which obviously concentrated on leading the eye thorough the composition. The objects themselves balance each other well to create a peaceful composition. Picasso makes a conscious effort to emphasize the bull, the horse and the woman in the window as each of these images are important to the symbolic aspect of the graphic depiction of the bombing of Guernica. As one looks at the overall movement in the painting, they get a sense of frozen motion unlike what is typical of the futurism style of composition. The idea that everything came to a sudden halt with no time to come to a real rest. The one piece of evidence contrary to this is the soldiers arm which lays peacefully across the ground.

I wake up and am filled with this wonderful feeling. It's kind of hard to describe; it's a mixture of excitement and expectation. Excitement because this is an adventure I have never been on before, expectation because I have many memories to compare this to. I am leaving for Mexico in 4 hours! It is am and I am finishing up my last minute packing; bathing suit, sandals, suntan lotion. Suntan lotion; never forget it. I have had many trips ruined from lack of suntan lotion. That feeling of being burnt will stay with me forever, it's like a smell from your childhood; brings back memories. When I think of past vacations I am reminded of how much I have grown, how my tastes have changed and how I have matured.

I'm 8 years old, sitting on the beach with my Nona. My family is to my left, building the biggest sandcastle that I have ever seen. The sky is blue, the weather is sweltering, the ocean is making that "swoosh, swoosh" sound that makes you want to fall asleep; Paradise. All I can think about is Disneyland. The rides, the candy, Mickey Mouse. I am missing the simplicity of this wonderland. Where are the characters? Where are the rides? Why are we sitting on the beach doing nothing? Why do grown-ups like this hot weather? I can't fathom why someone would prefer this to Disneyland. Here I am in my pink Minnie Mouse bathing suit, sitting on my Mickey Mouse towel wishing I was somewhere, anywhere other than here. A young girl, different looking than me, walks over and says something. I can't understand it; she is talking funny. My Nona responds; she is speaking Italian. My Nona continues to translate and the girl and I go off to play in the sand. There is no verbal communication between us but we understand each other regardless. I don't even remember her name. All of a sudden this vacation isn't so bad.

Shorts, tank tops, towels. Checking off the list. I always do that, ever since girls guide camp. Make a list and check it off, leave a copy in your bag so that you don't lose anything. hrs 40mins to go; seems like eternity. I can picture myself lying on the beach, sun beating down on my body. That feeling of pure bliss. Imagine I used to think that this was boring. I was so wrong. I feel the new-found maturity. I make a vow; this vacation is going to be different. I am going to explore the country. I am going to see the Mayan Ruins, the freshwater tunnels, the stalactites and the stalagmites. I am going to learn something. I walk downstairs, my mother is freaking out and my father is still packing. Where is my brother? Still asleep? I go and wake him. We are going to be late. Some things never change. I walk through the hallway and spy a picture from our trip to Disneyland. I couldn't imagine going there again. The stress, the lines, all of the people. How you could call that a vacation is beyond me. I look beside it and see a picture of our trip to Cuba. My best friend is in it and everyone looks so happy.

The sky is grey; it's raining. Again. I can't believe that it has been raining all week. This is Cuba, it's supposed to be hot. I walk over to Becca's bed to wake her and discover that she is already up. I go out onto the balcony, she is sitting with Aaron and my brother. They are talking about the night before. What a night. The club, the people, the dancing. It was our last night. I can't believe that we are leaving already. There is a knock on the door. It's the baggage carrier, the cab is here to take us to the airport. We are going home. I start to cry, all of a sudden I don't want to leave. This has been the best vacation ever.

We get into the Limousine. My mother is positive that we have left something. My brother is sleeping. My father calm. Always clam, as if nothing matters because we are going on vacation. I decide then and there that I am going to adapt that attitude. I forgot my hairbrush, who cares I'm on vacation. This is going to be the best one yet. I'm looking out the window; the sun is starting to come up. .5 hrs until we leave. We arrive at the airport; the countdown begins. We get our tickets. My brother and I fight over the window seat. I win, as usual. Neither of us really care who gets it, it's just a routine we go through every year. It drives my parent's nuts, but it wouldn't be the same without it.

I'm 5 years old. I am walking onto the plane for the first time. I sit in my seat next to my father. He does up my seat belt. I am terrified; but I won't cry. An exquisite blonde woman comes up to me and offers me a candy and a colouring book. She tells my dad that she will bring some crayons as soon as we take off. I learn that she is a stewardess, I am not quite sure what that is but I think that I might want to be one. I am distracted. The plane begins to move. I am thrown back into reality. I am petrified. The stewardess come back and offers me a lollypop. It will help my ears. The plane starts to take off; my ears begin popping. It hurts so much; I start crying. Why do people want to do this? The seatbelt sign goes off, the stewardess comes over and asks if Jordan and I would like to go into the cockpit to meet the captain. We follow her down the aisle and into a room full of buttons. It is the most incredible thing I have ever seen.

"0 minutes to departure" we are at the gate waiting to board. Woman and small children first. I can't help thinking about that first plane trip. My stomach begins to knot as we walk through that make shift hallway that leads to our home for the next .5 hrs. The Plane. I can feel the pressure building in my ears already. We are seated, I give in and let my brother have the window seat. I get out my book, reading always helps. The seat belt sign comes on. Only a few minutes to go. The plane begins to move. The knots get tighter. Paradise, here I come.

Summary

The following is a description of the organizational behavior of the Transportation Security Administration / TSA, at John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana, California. I speak to this subject with deep regard and respect as a result of being currently employed there as a screening supervisor. Much of the information I write is of a general nature due to the security sensitive status of my position and would deeply appreciate the understanding of the reader of my inability to talk in specifics of any given situation or issue.

Communication

The management at the Transportation Security Administration considers our organization to be a paramilitary group at the very least. Special attention is given to the ability of individuals to adhere to the standard operating procedure and follow direct orders with out question as long as they are within the boundaries of the standard operating procedure document.

Speaking for myself, I find this a less than easy situation to work in given that I am an intuitive-feeling type A personality that often sees things as they could and should be instead of the way they are in the current environment. (University of Phoenix, (Ed.) 00, pg) Let's just say that I'm good at self-monitoring or changing with required needs of other higher authority types. (University of Phoenix, (Ed.) 00, pg5)

The generally accepted way of communicating follows a chain of command with the subordinates held accountable for their actions and words by the direct superior. This concept is borrowed specifically from our nations military and police force leaving little room for personality types. In fact, I'm beginning to believe that the desired personality trait that was most desired upon hiring follows the authoritarianism belief of trusting higher authority. (University of Phoenix, (Ed.) 00, pg4) This does not mean there is no room for exception, instead it means that they went after a very specific type of person to insure the security of our nation and was willing to accept someone who was a little different as long they maintained a high ethical standard. In short, our communication at TSA tries to marry an open honest environment with strict adherence to rules and regulations.

Culture

The values and attitudes at John Wayne airport for the TSA are best described by Maglino and associates value category of helping and concern for others. (University of Phoenix, (Ed.) 00, pg8) I say this because if the pay scale does not reflect what the intensity and working conditions of their job in tale. The fact is they don't make much money when compared to the counties statistical average income. If any one were to ask why any of us took the job to begin with the general consensus would be the same for all, to do something of eminent good, the money is very secondary. The subculture is the majority with a tightly knit group bound with one very strong idealistic point of reference.

Another area of cultural makeup is ethnic and gender diversity. One must remember that we are a federal agency, and while hiring practices should be in line with equal opportunity employment practices, it is not the same EEO that the private sector adheres. We do have a screener workforce that is made up of about 65% women and 0% men over the age of 40. The other side of that equation is that most of them are Caucasians, which may not reflect the surrounding residential area. Again, the rules are a little different for the private sector as compared to a federal agency. In essence, anyone can take issue with our practices but does not have the ability to litigate an issue without the written approval of federal agency that is being sued.

Conflict

Conflict and conflict resolution is a major part of what the TSA organization does as a whole. Fortunately, the majority of the conflict is between the traveling public and our screeners and not between the screening workforces themselves. When I view the types of conflicts that my group is faced with, I can see that this is one of the major threads that makes us a little closer to each other as people. The majority seems to come to each other's side as a form of support to when the surrounding environment becomes difficult and serves as an aid in team building on a daily basis. When conflict between employees does arise it is dealt with swiftly since we are very much in the public eye and any dissemination between us is not acceptable and can result in undesired press coverage. The way conflict is handled is in accordance with typical military fashion, meaning we try to recognize the importance of each individuals view and insure the compliance to the set rules.

Other types of conflicts such as planned and unplanned change are resolved using mostly the rational persuasion strategy. (University of Phoenix, (Ed.) 00, pg 6) The change is presented as a result of a specific action that would constitute it being required for the sake of eminent good backed by facts.

Technology

Because of the security sensitive nature of my job, and the safety of our nation, I am not able to address this subject in any manner that would seem acceptable. I can say that TSA has all the latest technology available to thwart any attempt at terrorism and we are adopting new technology as it becomes available along with the training needed to use this technology effectively.

Since Canada became a nation, many thing have happened that have defined Canada as a remarkable nation in progress. People can recall things like Vimy Ridge, the Persons Case, Dieppe, and the Quebec referendum. These four things have assisted in creating the Canada we now know.

In 117, during World War Two, Canadian troops fought at Vimy Ridge. The Germans had been protecting the ridge, and had already defeated the French and British troop in 115. The Canadians realized that they needed to outsmart the Germans, and use technology that had never been used in was before. The troops built roads, a railway track and buried 1 miles of signal cable. They laid out 66 miles of telephone wire. They even laddered the wires. This was when they had separate lines with connecting links, this way a shell wouldnt be able to ruin the connection. Tunnelling companies dug 11 underground halls to help infantry get to their positions safely. On April th (Easter Morning) at 50 am troops were awake and ready for battle. Almost 1000 guns opened fire. Imagine the loudest clap of thunder you ever heard.1

We used the leap frog effect. Usually, after the shells stop firing, the opposition knows that your troops our now coming, however, we used out communication wires to tell the people at the base where we were located so the could fire the shells away from them. The troops made it to the enemies side, just as they were crawling out of the trenches. 0 000 men fought and 10600 were killed or wounded in four hours. This was a defining moment since the Canadians did what others thought couldnt be done. It lifted our spirts for the remainder of the war, and encouraged us to go further, because we now knew we could do anything.

Next is the Persons Case. This occurred in 1. Women were not legally Persons. 5 women known as the Famous Five Henrietta Muir Edwards, Nellie McClung, Louise McKinney, Emily Murphy and Irene Parlby signed a petition directed to the Governor General. They wanted the Supreme Court to deiced if women were able to become Senators un the BNA act. They however said that Persons were able to become Senators, and Women were not persons. The word persons had a strict legal definition and had excluded women from university degrees, voting, certain jobs , and holding in public office. The five women realised that women were equal to men and they should legally able to do all things men can do. After the Famous Fivewere told they were not persons by the supreme court they went t to the Privy Council and demanded support for women. There objective had been reached. This changed the role of women forever. Women could now finish school, try new careers and they changed their looks to. Womens arms and legs were being revealed. Hair was cut short and women could now smoke in public. Thanks to the Famous Five, the role of women had always been wives and mothers, now women have the same roles as men.

Third is the battle of Dieppe. This was in August of 14. Dieppe was a french port under the control of Germans. The allies new they need to find a way into Frans and win it back from the Germans. They figured that Dieppe would be the easiest way in. The Canadian division had been selected to conduct an experimental raid at Dieppe. This attack would combine Naval, air and land operations. Canadians were enthusiastic since they had seen little action since 140. However, the raid on Dieppe was not successful. Canadians had been out of practise since they hadnt battled in a long time. They also had very little knowledge of the layout at the port. They also lacked artillery and were outnumbered by German troops. Since the raid took place on sand, the tanks all got stuck and were immobile, and many of the ships waiting for retreating troops were hit and sunk. Canadians had accounted for 46 of the 6100 troops and 07 had been killed, and 1874 were taken prisoner. Canadians fought well and brave. Even though the raid was very unsuccessful the battle was a great learning experience. It taught the Canadian troops to be more prepared, trained and informed. They took the knowledge that they had gained at Dieppe with them when they were in Normandy and had to fight at Juno Beach, and Canada had easily won the beach. The aim of Dieppe was to practise techniques for later in the war, even though they were unsuccessful, they learned many things that helped later in the war.

Finally, The Quebec Referendum. In 15, Quebec held a referendum to make the final decision on whether or not they should separate. The PQ leader Jacques Parizeau, promised a referendum on full sovereignty. Parizeau felt that Quebec could easily enter the United Nations, use the Canadian dollar, and try to get a free trade deal with Canada. Only Quebeckers could vote in the referendum and Parizeau thought for sure that his side would win, and Quebec would be separate. However, after the vote, Parizeau was shocked. The side the voted no, won by a few votes. 50.58 people voted no and 4.4 voted yes for separation. Parizeau decided that he could no longer stay in parliament, so he resigned, and Lucien Bouchard took his place. This was an important moment in Canadian history because it showed Canadas unity. This showed that Quebeckers truly feel like they are a part of Canada, and even though we dont always get long, we are a country united.

In conclusion, I feel that Canada has had many moments that defined us as a nation. Vimy Ridge, Persons Case, Dieppe and Quebec Referendum were all moments that were important in our history. These moments make up the great nation we have today.
