Machiavellis representation of truth in The Prince is rooted in a cynical view of political and personal power. He uses the tactics of confusion and misrepresentation to advance his concept of the ideal state. Machiavelli combined the traditional, or classical, and Christian thought that was prevalent in philosophical circles of his day for the purposes of presenting his concept of power. This 5 page paper examines the concept of power, truth and imagination from Machiavellis viewpoint in The Prince.

and relates this notion of morality within the constructs of leadership. This paper considers the fact that Machiavelli appears to support the notion that the means always justify the ends in political situations, and that understanding this is the premise of strong leadership

Machiavelli creates principles to which a Princedom should be run which will enable the Prince to be strong in this reign that rival those of the THE ART OF WAR. He covers the state in which a Prince reigns such as that of acquiring new territory and the characteristics of which a Prince should follow if the Prince wishes to remain in power. Machiavelli also outlines the type of arms a Prince should inquire in defending his citizens or in attack of another ruler. Machiavelli covers Italys current political position of when he was living their and how its faults happened how it can be remedied. Under all his points he leaves the message, that no matter how you came into power, use it wisely and good fortune will be bestoed on you or that the ends justify the means.

I recommend that anyone who wishes to get into the mind of a political and military master mind or just someone looking for a thought provocing book should read this because it is not to be taken lightly. Although he is writing of political positions in the 1500s most of the points he makes can still be useful today however not all because of the invention of chemical and nuclear warfare and internet which has opened the world into a new dimension.

As a high school student I remember many of my instructors referring to Machiavelli as the author of the famous book on backstabbing for power. After having finally read the Prince, I really wonder where this reputation comes from. Machiavelli makes it clear from the first page that hes writing a guide for taking and maintaining power without any moral considerations getting in the way, but his arguments outline a benevolent authority, not a tyrannical one. In the Discourses (also included in this book), he extols the virtues of the people over the prince.

The Prince and the Discourses both have interesting gems for the modern reader. Machiavelli uses many examples of powerful people and institutions from his time. He expresses almost an atheistic position when discussing religion, and, furthermore, he describes a general disillusionment with religion by the people of Italy. I found all these subtle things quite intriguing and not at all what I would have expected.

Machiavelli writes in a very easy to read style (is this just the translation?) and he presents logical arguments and historical examples to back everything up, but his arguments generally boil down to because I say so. I suspect if a modern writer (particularly an academic) wrote this same book, it would be five times longer, with detailed justification for each point made.

When making the decision to return to college was a hard one. Some of the reasons for this are that it was going to be a financial strain. Working a full or part time job would be out of the question due to time restrains. Second it was going to be hard, because I was pregnant with our first child. And third was finding the money to go back to college.

Going to college takes lots of money. Not only for books and tuition. But also for living expenses, car expenses, and supplies. In my case if I were going to take traditional classes at a university I would have long-distance travel and babysitter expenses. The closest 4-year university to me is 60 miles away one direction. This would not leave much time to work even part-time. When deciding to get my degree I had to look at all these financial factors. Also my husband said in order for me to get a second degree I would have to pay for tuition and books with a Pell Grant and scholarships without using a student loan. I could go back to college for a second degree.

Two weeks before my first semester started I found out that I was pregnant. I had been pregnant before but they had ended in miscarriages. This time the doctor put me on pills that helped me stay pregnant. So it was an intense time when classes started. Not only because of classes starting but I was also worried about staying pregnant. While everything turned out to be okay and I had a problem free pregnant. Which helped in dealing with my first semester back to school.

The biggest challenge was finding enough money to go back. The first semester was hard. Because all the scholarships that I find were for students straight out of high school or in a degree plan that I was not working for. I ended up having enough money from a Pell Grant and a Non Traditional Student scholarship.

Romeo and Juliet

There is only one person who is truly responsible for the deaths of Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet. After looking at all the evidence provided, I believe that the Friar is that person. Although many would say Romeo or Juliet are more responsible the he, one must look at all the events leading up to their deaths.

One major reason that the Friar is the person to blame is the fact that he married the two without their parents consent. This act was clearly a "problem to the human heart in conflict with itself," because he had respect his own feelings while considering what was truly right. He obviously went with his own feelings. If the parents had known the two had been married there would have only been minor conflict rather then the irreversible outcome of death.

Another major contributing factor to the death of the two teenagers that the Friar provided was when he gave Juliet the sleeping potion. Giving her that very potion led to Romeo's thinking that she was dead. As a result Romeo killed himself, and when Juliet awakened she saw her beloved lying there motionless. Seeing Romeo dead is what made Juliet take her own life. The sleeping potion could perhaps be the most prominent reason for their deaths.

The last reason can and will not go unnoticed. This reason truly shows how the Friar could have done something to prevent Romeo and Juliet from dieing. That reason is he knew everything before, that Romeo had not received the message and that Juliet wasn't dead, but he still did not do anything. As a result to his unwillingness to do something about the message Romeo thought his bride was dead and killed himself.

The evidence clearly shows that the Friar is the real person to blame for the deaths of Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet. Whether it 's marrying them without their parent's consent, giving Juliet the sleeping potion, or not doing anything about Romeo's unawareness about Juliet's death, the Friar is the only person responsible for the teenager's deaths. After seeing all the information shown, it is clear that there is no other person to blame.

momThe landscape of the Eastern Conference has been shaken up in recent weeks. Atlanta has obtained Glenn "Big Dog" Robinson, Boston added Vin Baker and Shammond Williams, Cleveland added young stud Darius Miles, Detroit added Chauncey Billups, Milwaukee added Toni Kukoc, New Orleans signed star point guard Baron Davis to a contract extension, New York obtained Antonio McDyess, Orlando added Pat Garrity and Jacque Vaughn, Washington added Larry Hughes, and today the New Jersey Nets acquired All-Star center Dikembe Mutombo.

Whew! Just reading through these transactions is enough to make my head spin – and this list doesn't even include players from the NBA draft this summer. Isn't the Western Conference supposed to be the big boys of the NBA? This summer GM's from numerous Eastern Conference teams have made bold moves in attempts to bolster their clubs chances at winning an elusive NBA championship.

Late Tuesday afternoon Rod Thorn and the Nets pulled a gutsy move in the acquisition of Mutombo. Starting point guard Jason Kidd has been begging for a dominant big man for months and now he has an All-Star center in Mutombo.

"In bringing Dikembe to New Jersey, we have added a perennial All-Star to our roster," said Thorn. "He is a four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year who is one of the leading rebounders and shot blockers in the NBA. Dikembe's presence in the middle will strengthen our interior defense and his attributes fit in well with our overall style of play."

The big question is how does Mutombo fit with the Nets uptempo game? The problem Nets fans will discover is that Mutombo doesn't. Mutombo is an aging relic who didn't mesh with Allen Iverson this past season which is why the Sixers unloaded Mutombo. Just as Hakeem Olajuwon struggled with the Raptors this past season, so will Mutombo with the young upstart Nets next year. Jason Kidd has longed for a dominant big men and the Nets will keep him waiting like a jilted groomsman at the alter on his wedding day.

Mutombo is an 11-year NBA veteran who started to show signs of his age in the playoffs and during the later stages of the season. Mutombo has career marks of 12.3 points, 12.3 rebounds and 3.4 blocks in 840 games. Last year Mutombo averaged 11.5 points, 10.8 rebounds and 2.4 blocks while earning All-NBA Third Team and NBA All-Defensive second team honors.

These are decent stats and nothing to sneeze at, however, anyone who watched Mutombo and the Sixers struggle in the first round of the playoffs realize that last years version of Mutombo is a shell of the player that helped the Sixers to the NBA Finals the previous year. Mutombo's stats from last years playoffs are similar to that of this regular season stats – 8.8 points per game and 10.6 boards – are down slightly from his season long averages. However it was the way that the Sixers offense lagged while he was on the court and were unable to keep up with Boston.

The Nets have a young team built around Kidd, Kenyon Martin and Richard Jefferson. These players made the Nets successful last season due to their run and gun style, a game in which Mutombo showed no signs of being interested in last season with the Sixers. Mutombo prefers a slowed down offense in which the point guard brings the ball up court and dumps the ball down into the post to the teams big man.

On paper the acquisition of a former All-Star and defensive player of the year looks like another stroke of genius by Rod Thorn. However this is more than likely a bad science experiment that is sure to blow up in Thorn's face.

Sylvia Plath

(Sample paper) Write a personal response to the poetry of Sylvia Plath.

Support the points you make by reference to the poetry of Plath you have studied.

Sylvia Plath was a bright, intelligent and determined young woman with a burning desire to write. She wrote incessantly during her short life poetry, short stories, essays, articles. She was an outstanding student but often experienced self-doubt and depression and her work clearly reflects a wide range of emotions. She always sought perfection, often writing, and rewriting, her poetry until she was completely satisfied. She almost created a language for herself and this, combined with her startling images, make her poems truly unique. Her last poems are generally seen as her outstanding achievement. Here she appears to have truly found her voice expressing herself in a distinctive, unique style. She was even aware of this while writing them as she wrote to her mother that "I am a writer… I am a genius of a writer".

College papers on Sylvia Plath- a personal response

Plath was relentless in her work and much of her poetry reveals her struggle against herself and the world. Her poetry therefore touches on many themes and issues which clearly conveys her flexibility as an artist. During the early part of her marriage, she wrote the philosophical "Black Rook in Rainy Weather" One theme associated with the poem is the poet's identity as a writer. The poem depicts her quest for poetic inspiration and vision. She is surrounded by a dull landscape ".." and longs for something miraculous to transform the ordinary into the wonderful. She fears emotional exhaustion ".." and is resigned to the fact that inspiration involves a long wait.

She frequently returned to the idea of double identity in her poetry her interest in what appears on the surface and what is hidden is reflected in "Mirror". Here something frightening and almost sinister is hidden deep within herself "..", something that she would prefer to avoid but cannot escape. This preoccupation is also at the heart of "The Arrival of the Bee Box" The box appears like a simple container "..", it appears to hide no mysteries but it also conceals something fascinating, sinister and threatening "..".

Plath also had an abiding interest in the world around her. Her interest in nature is reflected in many of her poems. One is acutely aware of her ability to vividly describe the scene before her. "Finisterre", based on a memory of a holiday in France, allows us to visualise the rugged cliffs ".." listen to the relentless pounding of the sea "..", picture the delicacy of the flowers and the bleakness of the rocks below. She even allows us to feel the suffocating effect of the mists "..".

"Black Rook in Rainy Weather" represents ordinary nature as it orders itself "..". The poem is strong in visual details, vividly portraying a scene on a wet, miserable, wintry day. "The Pheasant" stands for innocent and beautiful nature "..". Her brilliant style creates graphic images the pheasant itself, the hill and the elm in the background and even in an earlier scene one can visualise the "crosshatch" footprints of various birds in the snow. "The Pheasant" also clearly conveys Plath's stance against the destruction of nature. "Poppies in July" captures the vivid colour ".." and the flickering movement of the poppies petals in the wind.

Nature was also used as a poetic device to reflect her own emotional and mental state. Her descriptions of landscapes are striking and the scene at times conveys her mood upon composing the poem. "Black Rook in Rainy Weather" may be strong in visual detail, but the environment does not matter. What is apparent and significant is the poet's mood. Plath was beginning to have doubts about her husbands love for her and she needed to be constantly reassured. In "Finisterre" there is a series of beautiful and dramatic images, many of these are personified ".." However, the anger in the poem is prevalent. This may have been the result of personal jealousies, differences between American and British views of gender roles, rural isolation and a return of her depression which caused problems in her marriage.

Plath's poems are graphically morbid, technically brilliant and convey tremendous emotional power. Her language has been commended for its control, power and incisiveness. "BRIRW" is an obvious example of her earlier control of language and form. The language is clear and precise and creates a story in pictures. "Pheasant" is an example her control of descriptive language, the words are simple and the descriptions are vivid. Many of her expressions echo everyday speech, giving the poems a light and easy rhythm, consider the opening of "Pheasant" "..".

There are many contrasting tones used with Plath's poetry. The tone reveals her inner state and quite a lot about her personality. She could be melancholic and elated in the same poem. In "Finisterre" there is an obvious contrast between the morbid ".." and the delicate "..".

Plath's poems are dark and moody in their imagery, clever and emotional. Her poems contain starkly contrasting images such as the dark head and later the red and green body of the pheasant in "Pheasant" She conveyed her fantastic imagination with her surreal imagery "souls rolled in the doom-noise of the sea" (F) In the "AOTBB" Plath brilliantly interlinks madness and death in the manner in which she refers to her bee-keepers outfit "in my moon-suit and funeral veil"

Sylvia Plath wrote poems that drew on her own experience of life and explored a range of emotions from happiness to terror and despair. She always looked inwards and rebelled against the conservative role she was expected to play. These inner conflicts are revealed in her poetry. Her writing has a universal appeal and it is presented innovatively and effectively. She wrote with a confidence that was not typical of women of her era, her work almost predicted the feminist writing that appeared in the decades after her death. Her work is peerless.
