Outdoor Environmental Education

Palmberg and Kuru found that participation in outdoor activities had a major impact on how students react and respond to their environment. Students acquired more awareness and had a greater respect for the environment and their surroundings. The results showed an increase in self-confidence and improved social behaviour. It also resulted in greater empathy for the environment and a desire to protect it. This approach has the students learning about the environment by participating in an outdoor activity. However, other educators believe that to instill responsible behaviour, it is important to teach students the necessary values and attitudes before engaging in outdoor activities. I prefer a combination of these two teaching styles, similar to that of John Charles Amesse. His approach is the †three-phase Brief/Activity/Debrief cycle†(Prouty & Radcliffe, 188). Students are given an introduction to the activity and given any necessary information. They are briefed on what to expect from the activity, and certain things to look for or pay attention to. Then the activity is carried out. Finally, in the third phase, the students and the teacher discuss their experiences, noting the positives and negatives. They discover the purpose of the activity and relate it to present and future behaviours.

Involvement in outdoor activities and experiencing nature improves one’s self-confidence. Confronting personal fears and apprehensions about nature, with the guidance and care of teachers and outdoor experts, slowly eases this fear. This ultimately results in willingness to participate in future activities, regardless of whether they are outdoors or not. For example, a child who is afraid of fire can be taught to build a campfire under the guidance and supervision of an instructor. He will learn the safety precautions and the do’s and don’ts of building a safe and successful fire. In accomplishing this task, the child not only overcomes his fear of fire, but recognizes his ability to do so. The child will recognize this increase in self-esteem, and it will be reinforced when he is debriefed about his experience. He will better recognize his accomplishment and realize what he is able to achieve. This self-esteem then leads to more confidence in trying new activities that present a challenge. Overcoming a fear of fire by building a campfire can be connected to the same type of fear a child might have of dogs. A dog can be a very frightening thing to any child, but in the company of an adult or the owner of the dog, the child can eventually overcome this fear. Slow steps are taken - the child might first observe the dog from a protected distance, then the child might watch the dog from a closer distance, next an adult might hold the dog, and eventually the child might come to pet the dog. Once this step is taken, the child will, in time, become comfortable in the presence of the dog. This self-esteem leads to confidence when confronted by another dog, or any other animal. However, it is important to remember that a student will not overcome his fear just by doing the activity one time. For a positive change in behaviour, †educators must not assume that one course or one unit or one year of training will accomplish the task needed even though a number of studies have shown that certain strategies for changing behaviour are successful†(Hungerford & Volk, 10). When the child builds one fire, or pets the dog once, there will still be fear present the second, or third, time when carrying out these tasks. It usually takes a number of times before they will feel comfortable and confident.

Familiarity with the natural environment enforces feelings of comfort and empowerment. Students are able to recognize similarities and differences between their own sense of place and the environment. They can identify the environment as their own. †By bonding with a particular place in the natural environment, through a series of activities over time, children can come to feel protective and develop a sense of stewardship for that place†(Dresner & Gill, 14). This bond that the children create is not only with the environment, but with others as well. This comfort zone allows the students to become more expressive when describing their experiences and what they see. Rather than describing a flower as ‘nice’, the flower might now be described as ‘beautiful’ or ‘fragrant’. Also, instead of just recognizing the destruction of trees and forests, the students feel sad, or sorry for the plants and animals who now have no home.

As students get older, they start making connections between their actions and the consequences of these actions on the environment. A young child knows that certain hazards occur, but cannot see or understand why or how. As the child gets older, and becomes more educated and experienced about his surroundings, the more he becomes aware of these consequences. He can then take measures into his own hands, and prevent or minimize some of the destructive behaviour. †Their understanding of concepts of interdependence and adaptations grows. And they learn outdoor skills with which to enjoy nature in low-impact ways†(Dresner & Gill, 14). For example, students recognized littering as a form of pollution. They understand it is necessary to use garbage containers and recycling facilities to reduce the amount of waste pollution. They mentioned the exhaust fumes from cars are harmful to the environment, and bicycles and car pooling should be used more often. These children have recognized the problems and have been able to think of possible solutions, whereas as younger children or uneducated children could only list a few problems but were unable to give solutions. The more educated our students are about the environment, the more willing they are to get involved.

I agree with the information presented in this article, however, I also feel it needs to be taken to another step. Not only is it important for students to participate in outdoor activities with a debriefing, but they also need to be briefed before the activity takes place. From personal experiences, as a participator and as an educator, I have found that the response from students is more positive and more reflective when the students are briefed beforehand. When children are not aware of the purpose of the activity, I have found that they lose interest and attention. When they are given previous instruction and information, they usually have a better understanding of the activity, and therefore become more enthusiastic and involved. They are more aware of what they should be looking for and experiencing. I have also found that when children are briefed beforehand, they tend to work and cooperate in groups better. There are usually less careless - mistakes, and accidents do not occur as often. Students also become more aware and attentive when briefed. They look for connections to the real world when participating in the activity, as opposed to making connections after the activity is finished. For example, when children are rock climbing, they might realize that it takes a lot of trust, communication, and teamwork to participate in effective rock climbing. They can easily relate this to working on school projects in groups, working at their own part-time job, or even ,perhaps, in family situations at home. There are many examples in real-life situations that involve trust, communication, or teamwork, and children will be able to connect these with the outdoor activity in which they are participating.

There are several different approaches for teaching awareness of the outdoor environment. Palmberg and Kuru’s ‘learning by doing’ approach, Amesse’s three-phase approach, ‘learning by telling’,’ learning through reflection’, are just a few. They are all successful approaches and can be used in any combination of the others. As mentioned before, from experience, I personally prefer Amesse’s three-phase approach, because I have received the best results from the different groups in which I have been involved. It is sometimes merely a matter of preference of the educator or outdoor leader. It can also depend on the age group of the students you are working with. The younger groups usually find it harder to reflect on their experience, unless they are asked direct, basic questions. The older groups are responsive to any approach, depending on how the educator outlines the activity. It comes down to how you phrase your questions and to whom you direct them. When educators do not receive any response, the questions should be rephrased or made simpler. The approach that the educator or leader chooses will often depend on they style he feels most comfortable with. This being the case, the approach that is chosen, should be effective.

Christmas has it lost its true meaning?

When the twenty-fifth of December starts to creep up each year the first thing that comes into most peoples head is, "What do I want this year for Christmas?" and the answer is usually the latest toy or game that is out at that time. Hardly any one will stop to thinking about the real reason why we celebrate Christmas, which is that it was the day that Christ was born. The religious side to Christmas is slowly starting to fade away. It is now just a chance for adults to get together and have a drink and for kids to get the latest toy that has just came out. It is no longer about celebrating Christ's birthday.

I am going to discuss this point and hopefully explain why I feel that Christmas is just about a chance to get drunk and get the best toy out in the shops. There are of course points both for and against this so I will discuss both sides.

Every year Christmas starts even earlier than the previous it no longer starts when we reach December, for some people (especially those in advertisement and marketing) it starts as early as October. People start to put their trees and decorations up around this time and some have even bought most of their presents. The putting up of decorations (which has nothing to do with the birth of baby Jesus) has even gone as far as people putting decorations up outside their houses and having a compotation to see who has the most decorative house. Shops have realised that if they want to make more money the best time of year to do this is at Christmas when they know that parents will go shopping mad to try and find the best present for their children and they know that the parents will pay huge amounts of money to do this. This has lead to advertisement campaigns getting bigger and some shops are starting to advertise their Christmas stock as early as September.

The giving of presents, which is supposed to represent the three wise men giving baby Jesus their presents, is no longer about the giving of the gifts it is about the getting of the gifts. This is especially true for children, who for months before have been annoying their parents about getting the latest toy, which they have seen in shop windows or on TV. It could be argued that Christmas is still about the birth of Jesus because schools do tend to concentrate more on religion at this time of year and also churches are fuller at this time of year but they aren't as full at any other time of the year.

The media don't advertise the religious side to Christmas they just advertise the Christmas presents and decorations because they know that this will bring them more money because people will go out and buy a magazine full of ideas of how to decorate your house at Christmas rather than buy one that celebrates the birth of Jesus.

Some people see Christmas as an excuse to have a party and get drunk. Staff Christmas nights out are organised where people use this Christmas gathering as a way to have a drink with friends and to speak to people they haven't seen in a while but while they talk they wont mention anything about the real reason about why they should be there which is to celebrate the birth of Christ. An argument against this would be that even though adults use Christmas as an excuse to get drunk it also brings people together e.g. at office parties, the whole family coming to have Christmas dinner all together.

Christmas also builds up a lot of expectations just to let people down. For months everyone has been planning this great Christmas but when the day comes it isn't as good as planned it's just the same as every other year, you get up open the presents, play with what you got then you have your dinner then it's over just like any other day. But the building of these expectations also gives people a feel good factor about their lives because they feel that they have something to look forward to, the New Year and a new beginning, which could be regarded as a Christian belief.

I believe that Christmas has become an advertisement for shops to sell their goods and to make money. The religious side to Christmas has gone and all anyone bothers about now is getting the latest toy or gadget. It is no longer about the fact that we should be celebrating the birth of Jesus.

Its only natural to want to get back on track and begin to participate in life again. Recovery can only begin, however, when there is a desire to be healthy.

As I talk with families who have a loved one with schizophrenia or any other serious mental illness, the topic of how to motivate him/her away from a destitute life spent watching t.v. on the couch 4 x 7. There are two things that come to my mind regarding motivation. First, a person needs to know that there is a great possibility of developing a new life after the onset of mental illness. Without that knowledge, there is no hope to live nor reason to want to be healthy.

Repeatedly, I was told that I would be affected by schizophrenia and wouldnt be able to do everything I had once wanted to do prior to the onset. Wrong. The truth is that there is hope for those that believe. It may and probably will take time. Months may pass before you see signs of recovered health, but time spent in recovery is an investment that will bring forth a future that will give you freedoms and options that one does not have while living under the umbrella of the mental health system.

Cheap writing services for schizophrenia recovery papers

The second thing that comes to mind regarding the couch potato life-style is contribution. During the second week of my hospitalization, I began to see how recovery depended upon my ability to use the skills that I had. Once I began to redevolp those Activities of Daily living I mentioned above, I was able to ponder the important things in life. Eventhough it was going to take years to build my strength up again, I decided that I would begin to help people while I was in the hospital. Of course I could do very little, but the point was I did all I could. I remember helping a person look for a missing puzzle piece inside a recreational room. That act of service helped take my attention away from thinking about my problems and gave me the opportunity to focus on something constructive.

So what is the difference between a healthy person evolving from schizophrenia, and a person stuck in the seemingly endless torment of it?

Answer Self Concept

Once a stabilized person has the desire to be healthy and takes responsibility for his/her actions, a genuine self will begin to sprout. By changing the way we see ourselves, our thoughts and actions will shape us into that person. Identity crisis is typical for someone experiencing schizophrenia. Without identity, we live our lives in the dark and live lives that are filled with experiences that seem unrelated. Our hope is in the future, but our minds and hearts are in the past. By focusing on changing our self-perception, the here and now of life becomes our constant focal point of awareness.

When we bring our awareness into the present moment, we can begin to see how our breath plays an important role in keeping us at the level of health we desire. I would even go as far as saying that a person will completely recover his/her life and experience remission if proper diaphragmatic breathing is substituted for shallow breathless breathing.

Diaphragmatic breathing is the opposite of shallow breathing.

Heres how

Begin by breathing in slowly, through your nose while mentally counting to five. When you are inhaling, picture the air going down into your stomach, not your lungs.

Put your hand on your stomach and you should feel it expanding. Now, slowly exhale through your mouth for a count of five. Picture the air emptying out of your stomach until its totally expelled. If you are doing it properly, your shoulders and chest will have very little, if no movement whatsoever.

Repeat ten times during practice and as long as needed when you are feeling overwhelmed by thoughts, emotions and attitudes.

What is one of the main benefits of a healthy identity?

Answer Healthy Self Esteem

We become more compassionate about the world we live in as we come closer to our genuine selves. Its in our higher nature to desire meaningful relationships that build strong communities. Our capacity to contribute will increase as we demonstrate to ourselves our capabilities. When we see the good that we bring forth (and remain humble), we will understand how valuable our contributions are and feel good about ourselves. Its important to give oneself time to process this information through experiences. I didnt consciously say to myself If I bring joy into someones life, I will feel like a new man. Thats artificial and will probably not come from the heart if our main intention is to feel good about ourselves. My healthy self esteem was a result of being the loving human being that I think we all are if we humble ourselves and allow the powers of love work in our lives.

Self concept + self esteem = ?

Answer Self confidence

A funny thing happens as we feel great about behaving from the person we are inside, we develop the self confidence thats needed to continually improve our strengths and talents. In the spirit of gratitude, we can look forward to integrating our abilities to serve life to such a degree that we become much more than what we thought of ourselves during the process of schizophrenia. Those 5 and 1/4 years provided me the experiences I needed to be confident in my capabilities as I defined my self concept.

I became so confident in my abilities to serve people that I was able to progress gradually from volunteer jobs to part time jobs, and then on to full time jobs. I was also able to go back to school. Even though a couple of times I needed to withdraw from school when I was unable to utilize stress at that time, I did find a vocational trade school that provided the opportunity for me to learn offset printing in the graphic arts field. Ive been able to screen print and embroider t-shirts, operate printing equipment, work at a corporate headquarters for Borders.com, and currently operate a web development company I created called WEBLANZ.COM, LLC. Happily married for three years, my wife and I enjoy the blessings of parenthood with a and 1/ year old son and a 6 month old daughter. My message is a simple one. Total remission is possible. Expand the good from where youre at. There is no magic formula that works for everybody since identity is the main issue involving schizophrenia. Everybody sees a different healthy person inside him/herself that is truly unique.

. Remission Error! Hyperlink reference not valid.

When a person finds him/herself stabilized and functioning fairly well while having not been hospitalized or any similiar relapse for a period of a couple to three years, I question the validity of keeping such a person on medication. It can be argued that its the medication thats keeping the person functioning, but I dont believe it. If the person has established a reasonably strong support system which may include family, friends, and neighbors, its my belief that its time to work out a plan of gradual reduction of medication. If one is fortunate enough to find a doctor who is supportive in this decision, all the better. However, this probably wont happen and will need to be done with other responsible people who have a good idea what this persons strengths and weaknesses are.

Just as there is a time for a cast to come off the once broken bone, there is also a time to stop using the medication as a crutch. This is the period of remission. This is the point in which one will experience recovery to its fullest. Remission is much more than just not being on medication. Remission is the reward for a completely successful recovery. Now, one of the first thoughts I told myself on that April 1 night as I decided to stop taking the medication was that I gave myself permission to go back on medication if I should ever need it. After all, it was my decision to start taking it and I knew it was the right thing to do in order to be stabilized. This idea of accepting the need to go back on it at any point of my life has kept me from stressing out about it, and is one of the many factors that has kept me strong without medication for 8 years and counting.

Stress!???!! First of all, stress is not bad; its good. It turns coal into diamonds. Secondly, when our attitude accepts the things in life that cause us to feel stressed, we need to understand that there are lessons within these stressors that will help us progress on lifes journey. And lastly, its a crime to think of how many people increase their dosage of medication just because they feel stressed. I was guilty of this a few times and I know how tempting it can be. Feeling stressed does not mean that a person is going to be unstable. Its appropriate to get upset when things are upsetting. Medication will not take away stress; it can only mask it and deceive us as stress festers and develops into even more complications on any physical, mental, emotional or spiritual level. I believe strongly that all people who experience schizophrenia could achieve full remission. The major stumbling blocks are

- No belief or hope in ones recovery

Ever since Horatio Alger told his tale, there has been a genre of biography that deals with the American dream, of how a person can rise above poverty and ignorance and become famous through grit, education and maybe a good mentor. A later version of this genre covers lives of people oppressed by race and poverty who make good.Gregory Williams' absorbing Life on the Color Line, subtitled The True Story of a White Boy Who Discovered He Was Black is yet another twist in the litany of the poverty and abuse sub genre. This story reveals how Williams was raised until he was ten years old convinced that he was a white child. His popular and charismatic father Tony, he was told (and never doubted) was Italian; his mother was a tempestuous redhead. After being abandoned by their parents, Gregory and his younger brother were raised by his father's relatives, who were black. This is when Gregory discovers he is part black.

Williams, now the dean of the Ohio State University College of Law, had a childhood that would have wrecked an ordinary mortal; it came close to destroying his younger brother Mike. Williams seems never to have lost his energy and determination to succeed through all the grim and harried years of his youth. His childhood is a constant story of mistreatment, overwork, and betrayal. Gritty poverty and the ensuing hunger and desperation overwhelm him time after time. A boy with very white skin living with black relatives, Williams was the target of rejection from both races. In spite of this, Williams prevailed.

Central to the success of this book is the author's detachment he tells his story as it happens with great drama, humor, and understanding of the people involved but without entering into analysis of what each tumultuous event was doing to his psyche. Despite beatings, being abandoned, being cheated of money, of chances to succeed, and of love, Williams had a strong attachment to his father. Gregory Williams is able to make his disreputable but gregarious alcoholic father come into focus as a man with a great deal of promise, writing talent, political savvy, and a sense of timing with history. Williams does not bewail his father's failure. He just attributes it to the inevitable vicissitudes of drink and uproarious living. The elder Williams is alive in these pages, in a strangely backhanded tribute to what might have been.

Gregory Williams looks back at this ragged, chaotic childhood to find in it the reasons for his perseverance and success. He says, In spite of all of the pain and grief of my early years, I am grateful to have been able to view the world from a place few men or women have stood… I am bound to live out my life in the middle of our society and hope that I can be a bridge between races, shouldering the heavy burden that almost destroyed my youth.

What drove Williams to his eventual success? He says that every time he got discouraged, he would recall the first few months living with his relatives as an outsider. I reminded myself that if I could make it through those days, all other obstacles could be overcome. He pushed on, to a master's, a law degree, then a doctorate. It was never easy, and at the height of his discouragement, he received a letter from Miss Dora, who had raised him, saying But I know you are trying to go to school and trying to work and be a lawyer and I hope I will live to see you make it. He knew he had to persevere.

This is the pattern of the genre, then. A person with seemingly insurmountable odds against him (or her) becomes convinced that an education is his salvation. There is usually a mentor, an older person who believes in him and encourages him. There is usually a little luck along the way. But most of all, there is a burning determination in the heart of the protagonist that he or she will survive, persevere, and succeed. Williams has written an outstanding testament to the power of a persevering heart.
