Great Expectations

Have you ever wondered how wealth can bring happiness and how it can change a person which poses the question, can it turn that person who was once poor into a better person?

The plot of Great Expectations revolves around Pip as a young boy and his chance encounter on the Kent marshes with an escaped convict, Magwitch. It follows Pip's journey through to adulthood and gives insight into the attitudes about the social conditions and snobbery at the time when Dickens was writing and what his views of them were.

It is a compelling novel of guilt, desire, ambition, greed and reconciliation and finally realising the true value of money, friendship and love.

When Pip and Magwitch first meet, their relationship appears to be based solely on power and fear. Upon seeing the convict Pip describes him as 'a fearful man' and during their short conversation, Pip sits 'trembling' showing his fear.

The man threatens the boy so that he can get what he wants and Pip seemingly obliges only to save his life. The convict manhandles him and repeatedly threatens him.

However, when they split up Pip keeps his gaze on him and the reader gets the impression that they are strikingly similar the image of the man 'still hugging himself in both arms' alone on the horizon, and also lonely not that different to the young boy Pip, who just minutes before he'd met the convict had been sat alone, looking longingly at his relatives gravestones. They share a common loneliness and both seem somewhat removed from society.

Pip comes across as a sympathetic, kind boy. His home life was rather unsettled as a young boy but his older sister Mrs Joe and her husband Joe take him in and become his guardians. Pip finds solace from his sister's rages in Joe and their relationship is more that of dear friends than surrogate father and son. Pip is reasonably happy with his life, as he knows no different and is unable to compare his situation… until he is called upon to visit Miss Havisham.

One day, Mr. Jaggers, a lawyer, reveals to Pip, that there are "Great Expectations" for Pip. He is given the money to become a gentleman and receive a good education; he assumes, without questioning that his benefactor is Miss Havisham. In London, Pip makes many new, high-society friends. After spending a while living there, Pip is happily settled in, still longing for Estella but enjoying spending time with his good friend Herbert, until his emotions are thrown into turmoil when his benefactor appears before him.

The atmosphere of the day when they meet seems fitting, the 'wretched weather' -soon to match Pip's disgust, almost as if the 'vast heavy veil' of terrible weather had dragged Magwitch with it, right to Pip's door. Pip surveyed his visitor with a slight air of distaste, he didn't like the man being overly friendly when he was still unsure as to who he was and what business they had together.

On second glances Pip finally realises who the strange man is but feels that he isn't under any obligation to him and simply tells him in no uncertain terms 'That I cannot wish to renew that chance intercourse with you of long ago, under these different circumstances.' Pip then makes it blatantly obvious that he doesn't want Magwitch in his house. This affects the man and Pip tries to smooth things over and makes polite conversation. Pip remembers about the £ that he was given as a child and he tries to pay him off by giving him two clean pound notes, but straightaway Magwitch burns them because he is offended that Pip is trying to get rid of him in this way. This is ironic as Pip doesn't realize that he is trying to pay off Magwitch, with Magwitch's own money.

However, when their conversing turns to how Pip became a gentleman, and the shocking truth comes out, Pip is repulsed. His snobbery is very obvious because, instead of gratitude, his attitude is one of total horror and disgust The abhorrence in which I held the man, the dread I had of him, the repugnance with which I shrank from him, could not have been exceeded if he had been some terrible beast.

Pip's emotions are very unstable; he is feeling disappointed, angry and very ashamed he doesn't want to be associated with a poor convict but realises with dread that Magwitch made him who he is, and that he owes him everything. The fact that Magwitch is from a lower class and a common criminal is far more important in Pip's eyes than the fact that Magwitch is a reformed character, now that he's good, honest and genuine. Pip is very hypocritical as he judges Magwitch by his class rather than how he is as a person.

The disappointment is due to the false belief that his benefactor was Miss Havisham and him becoming a gentleman was all part of a plan to groom him for Estella, when really it was nothing of the sort. He seems angry with Miss Havisham, which is unfair as she never told him that she was his benefactor, Pip just assumed it.

He also becomes aware that he has been neglecting Joe in preference for 'expectations' that have been paid for by a convict. Despite his reformed attitude to Joe and Biddy, therefore, it is obvious that Pip is still very much a snob because he does not want his wealthy friends to learn of his low class benefactor. When he had gone back for his sister's funeral in chapter 5, Pip showed a little remorse about his previous snobbishness and showing them that, even though he has become a gentleman, he has not abandoned his roots and still values their friendship. It also indicates that for the first time Pip is beginning to see through outside or superficial appearances to the fine man beneath. However, we learn, though, that he hasn't changed much as he is ashamed when he hears about his benefactor he's angry and snobbish, as to him its only about where his money came from, he can't cope with having "poor" money its undermined his whole idea of his wealth.

Pip displayed a haughty attitude up until the point when he discovered that Magwitch was his benefactor, not Miss Havisham. This single event seems to shatter Pips ever-growing ego and turn him into the true gentleman he wants to be. Magwitch talks about his gratitude for Pip when he helped him as a convict many years ago. You acted noble, my boy, said he. Noble Pip! And I have never forgot it!. He shows why he is a hero when he explains to Pip that he was the benefactor and the one responsible for making him a gentleman and helping him achieve his great expectations. Yes, Pip, dear boy, Ive made a gentleman on you! Its me wot done it!.

This point of change was made only after spending time with Magwitch and realizing how much he was grateful to him and how much Magwitch loved him. Pip stayed true to the end with Magwitch and never abandoned him as shown when Pip states, 'I will never stir from your side... when I am suffered to be near you. Please God, I will be as true to you as you have been to me.' This goes to prove that people can change, but only after they experience love. Pips unconditional love for Magwitch was definite because he had nothing to gain from him. After his death, however, Pip feels guilt and sadness when he learns what Magwitch spent most of his life trying do. Only now does Pip realize how much he has missed in life and how sorry he is for missing it. His apology to Joe and Biddy shows that they are forgiving characters and that Pip is now one of them. Pips acting out of the goodness of his heart demonstrates that deep down inside, he just wants to do the right thing, and mistakenly believed that money would do that.

Dickens seems to be suggesting that there were very clear dividisions between the rich and the poor, and snobbery was very common in the upper classes. Wealth and class are clearly very important to Pip which is unnecessary and heartless which is why he deserts Joe and Biddy. However, being wealthy, Pip had thought that it would bring him closer to the girl he loved, Estella. But it didnt. In return, he had more problems personally then before to face and wasnt enjoying his wealthy life. Wealth brought him to the path of broken love, much like it did with Miss Havisham as her fianc who we meet later in the book, Compeyson, was just going to marry her based on her riches not on love.

I have to admit that I have no sympathy for Pip, as he shouldn't rate people on their class without getting to know them first. He just assumed that the money was from Miss Havisham and that he was being groomed for Estella, as soon as he came into the money, he immediately left his old life behind.

Pip does change immensely during the course of his life, it is quite remarkable how such a kind young country boy can turn into an arrogant pitiful gentleman, and finally ending up in love, happy yet not particularly wealthy.

Summary of Goophered Grapevine

· The story is set contemporary to the time of Chesnutt's writing period. (Late 1800's) The protagonist in the story is a northern man and his wife who are interested in buying a piece of land in North Carolina. Which happens to be an old grape vineyard.

· The husband and wife run into a black man sitting on a log eating a hatful of grapes. ("Respectable black man")

· When Henry hears that the couple is interested in purchasing the land he proceeds to tell them his very knowledge of the lands history.

Do my essay on Goophered Grapevine

· He says it's "goophered" bewitched. Long ago a man named Mars Dugal owned the property. His slaves and slaves from other plantations use to steal his (scuppernons). He would set traps and stay up all night to try and catch them but couldn't.

· Mars visits a woman on the other side of town that is known to have powers. He hires her to protect his grapevines with her powers.

· She does this by taking a grape-twig, seed, dirt, a snakes tooth, speckled hens gall, hair from the tail of a black cat and mixes it in a bottle of wine. She then buries it under an oak tree. She tells the plantation workers that the vines are now goophered and if anyone eats a grape from the vine they will die within 1 months.

· Needless to say, the workers leave the grapes alone in fear they will die. They hear of a few instances where an unknowing child, a man from out of town- eat the grapes and soon die. The next year a field hand dies- assumed he ate some bad grapes.

· Mars buys a new hand {Henry} to replace the deceased one and forgets to tell him about the vineyard hex. He eats some grapes on the sly then was told of the cunjun witch who put a hex over the vineyard. He becomes sick immediately after.

· Mars takes Henry to see Aun' Peggy because he wasn't forewarned. and come back the following spring to see her. He does this and he is instantly healed.

· The following spring he sees her again and she makes him a drink and tells him to rub the sap from the trees on his head and this will also enable him to eat as many grapes as he'd like from the vines.

· When the leaves on the vines begin to grow, so does the hair on his very baldhead. He grows a thick and lavish head of hair. But when the grapes begin to grow, his hair curls up into tight little balls just like the grapes on the vine. By the time the grapes are ready for harvest, he looks as if he has a bunch of grapes on his head.

· Every spring he obediently rubs the sap on his head- and this makes him grow stronger and stronger every year. But in the winters, he has terrible arthritis and his head loses all its hair.

· Mars Dugal notices how each spring Henry turns into a strong and healthy worker. He decides to sell Henry for $1,500 to another plantation owner. However, when winter falls Henry is once again plagued with arthritis.

· Mars buys Henry back for $500 and takes care of him all winter long. (He does this because he knows he can keep selling him in the spring and make a good profit.)

· On the 5th year of doing so, a stranger comes to Mars Dugals plantation and gives him pointers on how to grow an even better vineyard. The advice is bad and Mars almost loses his entire vineyard.

· Dugal decides to keep Henry so he can work on his own plantation. The vines slowly wither and Henry is once again plagued by arthritis. His hair turns a yellow and falls out and soon thereafter Henry dies.

· So the black man telling the story strongly advises the Northern couple against buying the old vineyard. The only reason he is able to eat the grapes is because he can tell the old vines from the newly grown vines and those ones are not hexed.

· The couple ends up buying the old plantation. After they buy it they discover that the black man who told them the tale had been living in an old cabin on the property and had for a long time been selling and profiting from the vineyard.

In the end, he works for the northern couple on their vineyard.

With improvements in the virtually every industry, maintaining an effective production line while minimizing inventory costs is a very feasible option. Just-in-time systems are designed to keep inventory costs at a minimum.

Most performance measures are derived from the cost accounting information that is provided the finance department. The most two know costing system are the job-order costing, and the process costing. Both systems try to allocate the cost across the unit produced. This allocation process is known as the absorption rate.

Another important tool that is being used when implementing JIT is the supply chain management. In this process it is important to establish a relationship with the supplier, the supplier's supplier, and the customers. Suppliers and customers become an extension of the company's operation. It is a procedure that will track the product from the supplier warehouse, to the consumer's house.

The implementation of JIT in a business requires many managerial decisions to be made. They must first consider the cost of JIT implementation and the tradeoffs they are willing to make. Management must completely committed to the JIT, abandon any old plan, and lead the organization along the way. They are responsible to prepare the climate for any changes in the organizations' culture.

Traditionally, organizations are arranged in a top-to bottom hierarchical format. Unlike traditional organizational structure, JIT is structured on a team approach with more of a horizontal format.

Education and training are vital to a successful JIT implementation. Like any other new technique, proper training must occur in the early stages. Proper training and understanding of the new technique flows through the following stages

• Upper management education

• middle management, line supervisor, and staff education

• Workers education

• Implementation facilitator education.

Supplementary Material 8 Mile by Peter Hudson

What is the purpose of the film?

The purpose of the critically acclaimed 8 Mile starring controversial rapper Eminem and directed by the well-established Curtis Hanson of 'LA Confidential' fame is to show a white rapper's struggle for respect and survival in the tough side of Detroit, Michigan in the USA. The movie is also a semi-autobiographical piece based on Eminem's life before becoming famous. The film deals with James 'Rabbit' Smith, Jnr's (Eminem) harsh and cold attitude towards life and people in higher roles than himself. The world seems to hate him and he hates it more. The significance of the title 8 Mile is that there is a road in Detroit called 8 Mile Rd and is what separates the rich people from the poor people in the city.

Information about the movie

Being white in a predominantly black neighbourhood is what makes Rabbits acceptance his biggest barrier. Rabbit has dreams of escaping from the harsh side of life and living it up as a mega-rich superstar rapper. Throughout the film Rabbit is promised by Wayne to get a spot in the recording studio and get a chance to record a demo to send out so he can get his rap career started.

The movie opens with Rabbit choking from a rap duel at a local club the 'Chin Tiki', this then gives more fuel to burn to his doubters and his enemies who believe he is nothing. Rabbit deals with change throughout this movie as he learns to understand that he is not more special than the other bums around the neighbourhood, and he conveys this by his quote

"Have you ever thought about saying fk it, and stop living up here (the clouds) and start living down here (reality)".

His friends also fall under the same category of having big dreams and plans but never actually doing it

"Man, thats all we ever do man, is talk st, (mimicking his friends) we need to get fine bitchs and phat (cool) rides, no what we need to do is put our money in savings bonds, no what we need to do is get our songs on J.O.B., man shut the fk up, all of us never do st about nothing, and still broke as fkers and live at home with our moms".

When Rabbit finds his girlfriend, Alex having sex with Wayne (she is using Wayne so she get to bigger things in New York as Wayne supposedly has connections), Rabbit realises that he can't trust anyone and has to do things his way. When he goes home to his mum's trailer (who also lives a fantasy that she is going to fall rich and live happily ever after), his mum asks if he was serious about the demo for his music from Wayne, Rabbit pauses and says

"No, Im gunna do it on my own"

This quote shows the beginning of the change for Rabbit. He also shows further change in himself when he finally shows respect to his boss and realises he has to be nice to him. And in turn his boss finally gives him the extra shifts Rabbit has been asking for. He then realises that he must go duel at the 'Chin Tiki' for respect he has long craved. He takes on the gang, The Freeworld, who bashed him earlier for hitting Wayne, and he wins the duel against of the Freeworld members and finally gets respect. In his final duel, Rabbit finally owns up to the neighbourhood his true life and basically tells them to take it or leave it.

"I am white, I am a fking bum, I do live in a trailer with my mom, my boy, Future is an ugly bum, I do got a jumped friend named Chedda Bomb who shoots himself in the leg with his own gun, I did get jumped by all 6 of you chumps, and Wayne did fk my girl, and Im still standing here saying fk the Freeworld, dont ever try to judge me dude, you dont know what Ive been through (and) I'm a piece of fking white trash, I say it proudly, and fk this battle, I don't wanna win, I'm outtie, (hands the microphone to opponent) now here, tell these people something they don't know about me."

After his duel, Rabbit finally comes full circle and tells his friends he can't party because he has to go back to work, signifying Rabbits complete change and accepts responsibility and learns to work with the system, not go against it or try to get a shortcut.

Eminem gives an outstanding debut performance as Rabbit and well supported by established African-American actor, Mekhi Phifer as Future, Rabbits best friend. Also lending a hand is Oscar winner, Kim Basinger, who plays Rabbit's mother. Curtis Hanson does extremely well to a movie with a simple formula and gives it significant depth with an all-star cast to push it to become an entertaining and somewhat inspirational movie with some critics calling for Oscar nominations especially for Eminem's portrayal. The movie is obviously a star vehicle for Eminem's debut film, but with 10 minutes into the film it is clear that Eminem can act and act very well. The film succeeds in pleasing its audience and gives a climatic ending where Rabbit conquers his doubters and finally learns to do things his way and to do it with honesty and not try to find shortcuts like with Wayne who betrays him.

How is the meaning made? / What techniques does the filmmaker use to communicate his message

• Camera Angles

When Rabbit is being bashed by the gang, The Freeworld, the positioning of camera angles suggests Rabbit's importance in the world with a down-facing angle whereas the members of Freeworld have angles facing upwards showing their dominance over Rabbit and his insignificance in their neighbourhood, this leads us back to the white rapper struggling in the predominantly black neighbourhood.

When Rabbit finishes his final duel and the crowd of the 'Chin Tiki' behind him and his Freeworld opponent chokes, the camera faces up towards Rabbit and down on the Freeworld gang, this shows his new dominance over his rivals and how their status has changed with Rabbit's coming of age.

• Colloquial Language

Although the language throughout the film is very rough, it plays to its intended audience, which is mid-teens to middle-to-late 0's, who use the language presented in the film. The offbeat and often colourful language is realistic to its location, the rough, tough and dark lifestyle of the poorer side of Detroit; to have the language any different or more conservative would not be realistic and present an inaccurate depiction of what life is really like there.

• Music / Rapping

The rapping throughout the movie provided the means of communication for the rappers deeper thoughts and feelings. Such as

o When Rabbit and Future sing along to 'Sweet Home Alabama' they take out the real words and replace them with their life story

Future "Well Jimmy (Rabbit) moved in with his mother, coz he ain't got no place to go"

Rabbit "And now I'm right back in the gutter, with a garbage bag that's full of clothes"

Future "Coz you live at home in a trailer, what the hell you gonna do?

Rabbit "Coz I live at home in a trailer, Mum I'm coming home to you. Well my name's Jimmy, his names Greg Buel, me, you and him all went to the same school, this ain't cool, I'm in a range, he's tapping my mom and we're the same age. On the microphone I drop bombs, look at this car! Thanks a lot Ma!! (Mimicking his mum) Here happy birthday rabbit, a 18 Delta, this st won't even get me to the shelter!"

o When they are standing in line for food at lunchtime at work, they rap about their poor lives and their bad jobs and bad food

"Man, I'm getting so sick and tired of fking with this deal, they only give us 0 minutes to sit down and chill, my body aching, just to get a buck, I'm sick of eating this st out of this fking lunch truck".

o And of course Rabbits final rap duel (transcript above), this shows his inner anguish and he lays it all on the line for the last time and goes back to reality.

• Interaction with other characters Dialogue

One of the main techniques used by the writer, Scott Silver is dialogue along with the rapping. The conversations between Rabbit and his mother showed how much they were alike, despite Rabbit's belief he was better than everyone. "What are you doing with your life thats so great?" is the mum's query to Rabbit who comes back with saying Wayne is getting a demo spot for him however that is after a pause, but the uncertainty in his voice and the pause finally shows that he really isn't sure whether Wayne will come through and help him.

Also Rabbit's conversations with Alex, although they have different dreams and ambitions, Rabbit wants to be a rapper and Alex wants to be a model, they very much mirror each other in the fact they are dreaming and they need to come to reality. Alex is different only in the fact that she will use people to get to where she needs to go, such as sleeping with Wayne whereas Rabbit is willing to wait and see what happens so he doesn't have to put himself out there where he can be put down again.

This short story is a reflective piece as the narrator remembers her childhood experiences, using the symbol of the "washing line" to remind the reader about the

changes in one's life and the strength of memories.

The first person narrator remembers the washing line "first", with its "silver skeletal

arms". This image is the central image of her reminiscence. She describes the garden

Cheap essay writing services offer help on Sky High by Hannah Roberts

surrounding it and the "best climbing tree", which was "festooned with socks and

knickers and shirts". The nostalgic tone is established as we are caught up in her

world of colour and nature as she notes the "almond tree", the nectarine tree's "hard,

bird-bitten fruit" and other flora.

Yet the reader is abruptly moved on in time in with the ambiguous line, "Today,

however, it is bare". At first it seems we have returned to the present but we soon

realise that her thoughts have wandered to another day in her childhood, when she

climbed the washing line and sat in her "exalted position, almost sky-high". Here we

share her feelings of joy and excitement as she surveys the world she knows. The

level of language and sentence structure at this point becomes almost child-like in its

conversational tone, simplicity and matter-of-fact statements, "Three little boys live

there; I have stood on the fence and talked to them, even been in their house once."

The reader becomes caught in the moment with the young girl who is feeling "frilly

and nearly as pink as the bathers" she was wearing. As the narrator describes, in the

present tense and in the voice of the child, her climb "out along one skeletal arm"

until she swings "upside-down" the reader is swept along with her euphoria and

movement. We are captured in the moment as the "earth spins below" her and she is

"flying".

Once again the reader is abruptly moved on to an image of an "older, more agewarped

washing line" that depicts the passage of time since she once soared in the

childhood memory previously described. The image of her hands that have

accumulated "the line-etched story in scars and wrinkles" reinforces the sense of

ageing and nostalgic tone. While the washing line has stood constant in the yard,

changes have occurred and the carefree imagination of the child and will of the child

are tempered by the reality "The inclination is still there . . .but it is unlikely the

washing line could support me this time." The adult world intrudes on her reflection

as she realises how her life and world have changed. She must accept the

responsibilities of adulthood as she is no longer the "curious onlooker" but creates her

own "semaphore secrets" with her washing. She doesn't feel "the sagging wires" and

"spotted metallic arms" could support her and acknowledges it would be a struggle as

"there are too many things tying [her] to the ground." She has matured and accepts

her changed circumstances but still pines for those moments of freedom she

experienced as a child and remembers, symbolised by the washing machine and the

memories it evokes.

This story highlights the passage of time and stages of our life that bring change and

development yet it also evokes the adult nostalgia for the fun, innocence and freedom

of childhood. The title reflects the childhood's whimsical notion of being "sky-high"

on the washing line while the conclusion reflects the realistic image of an adult being

tied to the ground. The young child is fearless, inquisitive and imaginative, acting on

impulse. Her descriptions of her world and people in it are non-judgemental. The

narrator reminds us that as an adult she still feels "a small pilot light burning" but she

rationalises it, preventing herself from responding to a moment of inspiration and

perhaps, even briefly, entering another world one of her youth or alternatively a new

one. The author encourages the reader to consider their own circumstances and

reminisce about changes that have occurred, and reflect on those that could still occur.
