In today's society everything we do and have requires

capital.

The dependency theory tends to stress the external

factors to the relatively negligence of internal factors. It

tends to overgeneralize about the underdeveloped world

and treat underdeveloped societies as if they are all

essentially alike, ignoring differences among societies

involving such things as population size, geography,

political structure and class structure. The poverty of the

less developed world is the product of their own dependent

relations with developed societies. It is possible that

dependency could have worsened poverty in some cases.

The world today is essentially a capitalist world. The

capitalist world has developed in an extremely uneven

fashion; those societies that, have advantages that give them

a favorable starting position have been able to improve that

position, and those that had unfavorable starting positions

have often ended up much more favorable. Although the

less developed countries are developing relative to their

own past, the vast majority will never catch up with the

developed countries. IF you live in an area where raw

material is not sought after, you may not attract as much

interest from other states. As in the movie Turumba, their

raw material was limited. The vast majority of their money

came from the goods they made and sold. It was only when

they had a very large order, export, for the dolls that they

made even more money. This could be said to be bad faith. It

was not a necessity for them to sell more dolls, they had

made it thus far on the income they had.

As these societies industrialized, their occupational

structures have changed drastically. More and more people

are required to spend long periods of time in school in

order to acquire the things needed to do increasingly

demanding work. Another social inadequacy is the basic

skills in literacy. The branches with the worst performance

records were those in which a disproportionately high

number of employees were attending educational programs

after working long hours. There was also evidence that

performance was worst in precisely those branches in which

the managers stressed education has become an

increasingly important part of the lives of different

societies. It is in our society that education becomes the

vehicle for creating citizens.

The United states is very patriotic where hegemony is

concerned. We believe in our country, but the disadvantage

to this may be we are a little conceited.

We are a core society. We dominate world-economy and

concentrate on the production of the most advanced goods

using the most advanced technologies and best employee

wage. Within this core we find the strongest states and

military. We developed science earlier. We use control

over means of economic production and our superior

political and military power to dominate and exploit the

periphery countries. The periphery countries are the least

developed. They use outdated technologies and

concentrate on declining sectors of economic production.

The periphery countries concentrate on the production of

raw materials and forced labor. The United States has much

prestige, but it is obvious to everyone that this is slipping.

The United States is not feared politically and military as it

once was. A hegemony always has rivals and these rivals do

their utmost to undercut hegemony's dominant position. It

was capitalism not industrialism that really introduced the

modern world. It was capitalism that made industrialism

possible. The industrialization was the substitution of

machines. The substitution of inanimate for animate sources

of power, the introduction of engines for converting heat

into work, which opened man a new and almost unlimited

supply of energy. The industrial revolution in technology

and one involving the organization of the economy.

The core societies industrialized earliest and fastest

with the periphery societies latest and slowest.

Industrialization was a process of mechanization within

capitalism that occurred to a very great extent because

mechanization increased profit.

As what Berger said, "That society determines what we

do but also what we become." People that live in a periphery

society learn how to get by on nothing. It is also restricting

on how far they can go educationally and how much money

they earn.

In a core society, United states, we have every resource

available to us. We can get the education to become what

ever we wish.

It is very unlikely that the current tendency for the

less developed countries to catch-up with the already

developed countries is possible. Despite the fact that the

gap in national income between the core and periphery

societies continues to widen. Most less developed

countries have experienced a process of development

relative to their own past. They have developed in absolute

terms even while they have fallen further and further

behind.

The whole world cannot develop equally. The whole

world system develops and over time the gap between the

core and the periphery is inevitable and will increase.

In The Sweet Hereafter, written by Russell Banks, an accident occurs taking the lives of 14 children on a school bus. There are five different protagonists to the novel who offer a different perspective to the event. Two of whom are closely related and are the most powerful characters to the story Mitchell Stephens and Billy Ansel. The story is about a community immersed in denial. And they seek to place blame as means to ease their pain.

Aside from Nicole Burnell and Dolores Driscoll (Dolores means pain or agony in Italian), Billy Ansel was a main witness of the Sam Dent school bus accident that took the lives of 14 children. Billy describes the community

Billy, having his wife die, being a Vietnam vet, and supposedly knowing about life and death, finds himself not being able to cope while guilty about his affair. Unlike the town, he doesn't out right blame Dolores for the accident. He doesn't give into the town's conformity; he knows they are just using her as a scapegoat. He feels guilty because he was right behind the bus yet instead his mind was on the sexual experiences he had mourning over his wife. Billy was lonely while he still had his children; he still had something left and yet had to do something sinful. Now he lost his children too and has nothing left, so continued to destroy himself now with alcohol. His character indulges in pain instead of appreciating what he knows he loves; he focuses on what he lost or the negative things that happened in his life and uses that as an excuse to destroy himself, become depressed, and feel self pity to his embrace pain.

To the outside world he a good, attractive, generous person and maybe deep down he is and even wants to be, but something is wrong with him and he can't get over it. Billy raises his standards to an unreachable level and therefore will never be satisfied. He can even expect the worse as it happens; a self fulfilling prophecy. It takes the deaths of his children in order for him to realize himself or what he had until it was taken from him. Most likely the war did this to him, the society he lived in, and his childhood without a father. Or maybe he does this and lives life this way as a sort of protection and comfort in case negative things do happen. He has himself at a place so that when something does occur he's already down and can't go any lower; it's less painful than going from up to down.

Billy describes himself after the deaths as a ghost and he too is dead. As for drinking, "you might think that remembering those moments is a way of keeping my family alive, but it's not; it's a way of keeping myself alive. Just as you might think drinking is a way to numb the pain; it's not; it's a way to feel the pain (Banks, 44)." In feeling dead, he is numbed and drinks to feel pain, in feeling pain he feels or knows he is alive. The only way he can truly feel is through pain. Billy talks about his father abandoning him and how he's grown bitter with the truth of death that, "it's like paying taxes (Banks, 54)" something you can't stop. Billy denies help from anyone, he says he's fine. He is beyond help.

After a while, people start going away from saying it was an accident and say it was caused. "It was either Dolores's fault or the state's fault for the condition of the road and the sand pit filling with water (Banks 7)." That is how the lawyers got a chance for settlements. The people of the town are destroyed; a town that loses its children before the adults loses its meaning.

Billy rejects Mitchell Stephens, Esquire at first meeting. Billy says he can't help him. Mitchell isn't a greedy lawyer, he's angry. Anger is good for his profession since he's a negligence lawyer. He read about the accident in the paper. "I knew at once that it wasn't an 'accident' at all. There are no accidents… I knew that somebody somewhere had made decision to cut a corner in order to save a few pennies…(Banks,1)." Out of anger, he decides to go to Sam Dent for a case. Mitchell has a certain way of looking at society and its differences between the city and country life; he calls himself an "urban animal". (Banks,)

Mitchell's mission was to make whoever caused the accident pay, saving the life of another child in future accidents, even though he can't even save his own. The people he needs for the lawsuit are the angry ones; the ones who want revenge. Victims or ghosts are useless in the court and are dead like their children. Mitchell can relate to the parents because of his experience with his daughter, but it is anger he needs. What else is needed are people the jury would like, such as Billy Ansel an American war hero who lost his wife and twins, Nicole Burnell a crippled survivor, once a beauty queen, and loved by the town. She is better for court, "a living victim is more effective with a jury than a dead one; you can't compensate the dead…(Banks,10)."

Stephens had to keep Dolores innocent to make big money on the state or school district, but the speed the bus was going was the key. Mitchell's cases and the anger in his blood is what get him going; what keeps him alive. Without that he would be sitting at home alone, and depressed like Billy. In a way, Mitchell can't do anything about his fate, so he joins other misfortunate people and gets angry for them and hope they're angry too. This is his way of venting, a way to keep himself sane, and exist in reality. Billy and Mitchell both had their kids taken from them by society, by corrupt motives

It's like all the children of America are dead to us…In my lifetime something terrible happened that took our children away from us…the middle class grabs what it can buy and passes it on, like poisoned candy…boonies sell their souls with longing for what's killing everyone else's kids and wonder why theirs are on crack. (Banks, )

And it all comes down to money and power; an all American dream.

Although Billy rejects Mitchell, I believe that maybe they would have been able to help each other. Slightly similar to Billy losing his family, Stevens in a way already has. With Billy not accepting the case in the end, I believe it represents how you can't change tragedies, avoid them, or fix them with money. Money only broke up the community more. Although it is his release, Stephens's profession will never really help anyone by what it gains in dollars. It might have even contributed to whatever causes his daughter Zoe to take the route she did. She sarcastically refers to him as, "…my father…a hot shit lawyer…(Banks, 154)," he might have been so busy with his cases as most lawyers are that he didn't give her the time or attention she required. His only control is when Zoe calls him for money. They will always have their losses, and Billy not suing shows that, a forever open ended, no solution problem to their lives.

As an Iranian-American I have been influenced by the American culture as well as the Iranian culture. Both of my parents were raised in Iran, and they were of the few immigrants who came to the U.S. in their early 0's and did not become Americanized. The culture in Iran compared to the United States is very different. People dress differently, people act differently, and people have different standards. Generally, the Iranian culture is very conservative. In Iran people are very particular about education and so are my parents. They stress this very much and it has become a priority for me.

My family follows their culture quite closely so I have to make the same commitment. Even though education is the main concern of my parents, it is not an issue because it is what I am striving for also. I am finishing high school a year early, and I am in a process of getting guaranteed transfers to several universities. Even though I follow the same terms that they do at home I am totally different at school and around my friends. At home I tend swallow my pride so that my parents have unconditional respect that the Iranian culture emphasizes. At school and away from the family I have the urge to let it all out, and be as loud and obnoxious as I want to be. To my friends I am the loud, little nerd, and to my family I am a party animal. The differences yet that seem so similar but different at the same time are that I live with their culture away from my family but without it when I am with them.

It is more than instinct for me to find a reason to rebel in that kind of small way. It gives me a special sentimental feeling that is better to live with than without. My parents have spent their whole lives pressuring their culture onto me because for them it seems that my life would be easier with it. I have adapted their culture and used it to customize my own personality, yet I still do not fully follow it because in this day and age it is practically impossible. With the culture that my parents grew up in, they didn't have much communication with members of the opposite sex unless they were family. I do not get along with members of my own sex very well, most of my friends tend to be boys because they are more easy-going, and I tend to have a better time with them. Other than that the rest of their culture is mostly bearable and livable.

My dad grew up in a very poor family and my mom in a rich family. This is also another reason why it is hard to adapt to both of my parents culture's at the same time. They were both from a different class. My father lived in a house were there was no running water, and yet he attended the most prestigious University in Iran. He was the first person in his family to get a high-school diploma. He got his bachelors degree and then got a scholarship to Stanford University, where he got his masters degree and later his PhD. My mother did not come from a poor family; in fact it was quite the opposite. She went to Europe, just for fun, and decided to stay. Later on she came to the U.S. where she decided to study. She went to school and got her masters degree. From both of my parents come two completely different heritages, both which I have adapted to myself and mixed to fit my own personality. They both push for a very high education. With their influence my goal is to become one of the people in my family that takes our class and status higher like my mother and father did.

I have come from a rich spoiled family and a hard working poor family. I have grown up with people who understand the importance of education, and who have made it a goal for me to get the best education that I can. Even though I am very influenced by my parents and they have affected me in the greatest way but not enough to change my own personal ideas. My personality is the one I was born with. I take in my parent's culture and heritage as opinions and when I see a good use for them I keep them. If not I throw it out the window and live life the way I feel comfortable. Instead of bucking her past of break-the-rules sex, drugs, and alcohol she embraces her bad-girl past with a new twist. It wasnt morally wrong or absent her identity as a lesbian now that she was getting married, rather it is part of her identity she still embraces and reinforces that identification by choosing the drug, sex, and sin capital of Las Vegas for her wedding sight.

Barrie proves that the politics of queer theory and current gay and lesbian mainstream movements are not incompatible. Warner states that queer is used to suggest how many people find themselves at odds with straight culture. Inherently, Barrie and Linnea are challenging notions of straight culture. Linneas identification as being a butch lesbian challenges gender constructions and Barries own lesbian identification embraces the spectrum of sexual promiscuity to monogamy and love. The two embrace the role of sex in their marriage instead of marrying to blend their identity. Warner points to the movement and describes the politics of sexual identity versus sex in a negative light.
