The year 187 can be characterized as an exciting period in time when many young people set out to achieve new fortune in the recently settled south and west territories. The letter, written by George Townes, describes the opportunity and prosperity available in Alabama in the 180s and 180s. Through close analysis of this letter, as a primary document, details of significant issues in politics and social life are revealed, merely by George Townes describing everyday life to his father, who lives in North Carolina.

The first question that comes to mind after reading this excerpt is Why does George write back to his father in such a persuasive manner? From the beginning, George Townes encourages all those that will read his letter to drop everything, move to Alabama, and enjoy the prosperity and wealth that appears to be so abundant. "…Come West and live like kings!" he exclaims. He further describes the earth as lush and prime for farming. All land, from the high country, to the rocky areas, to the lowlands, all seem as limitless arable land, just waiting for cultivation. He makes yet another attempt at persuasion when he mentions that the soil in Alabama was richer than the previously tilled land in North Carolina "None of your worn out Carolina soil for me." It appears not only as though George wants his father, Henry Townes, to come enjoy the prosperity, but also that George in some way needs his father. Moving west was promising for the youthful to prosper, but it took money to fund trips west, as well as to fund new plantations. In this case, George could have found the opportunity, but still lacked the subsidy that plantation life required. This is suggested when he mentions that the family slave could be more useful to him in Alabama than she would be to Henry in North Carolina. "…good hands are everything and a prime field hand will fetch $1500. Even Dicey would bring a fancy price, and you can tell her that!" It appears in this section of the excerpt, that George needs slaves, if not, money to purchase good slaves so that he can bring in the prosperity that comes with a "prime field hand." George is writing this letter boasting that he has found more opportunity in Alabama than in North Carolina; he simply needs the legal tender to support his hopes.

The second feature that is important in this particular primary document are the significant political and social issues that arise. Again, George displays this message from the very beginning. George Townes makes it clear the institution of slavery is not only acceptable, but also vital to prosperity and wealth in the South. However, George is not completely to blame for this concept. During this period, the majority of the nation practiced slavery. However, George made slavery a bold aspect in his letter, stating that in order to prosper, a young person in search for wealth must not be bothered by the use of slaves. Townes wrote, "…they can not succeed as farmers or family if they flinch at the working of negroes." He continues further by saying, "This land is for nothing but negroes and cotton, cotton and negroes, one and indivisible!" This is an extremely strong statement in favor of slavery; however, with many young people gaining wealth at incredible speeds, no one was willing to petition slavery to be abolished.

Another interesting social issue that ascends in the letter is the relationship George has with slaves. He refers to a slave from his home in North Carolina by her first name, "Dicey," and seems to have a pleasant relationship to slaves, as opposed to a cruel, violent relationship which existed on many plantations throughout the country. This gives the reader an insight as to how different the institution of slavery can be in the new world. Slavery can be a civil practice, or can be harsh and horrifying, as far as the treatment of slaves. George raises many questions, however, about slavery. He agrees it is important, but he obviously realizes the value of good slaves. This shows the division in the United States population, as far as attitudes towards and about slaves.
