Why a Masters Degree

Each individual has their own reasoning behind their pursuit of a graduate degree. Professional and career goals, self-improvement, status in society, and of course monetary reasons, are just a few motivating factors. My decision to attain a graduate degree was based on a combination of these factors. When I was younger, to have for a successful career, an undergraduate degree seemed more than enough. But, times have changed, and an undergraduate degree is just not enough to make it in today's society. To keep in pace with today's high tech environment, a graduate degree is not only an asset, but now more than ever, it seems essential.

The Question now is why do I want an MBA? Being a payroll manager, I was put in situations working with customers from various backgrounds and educational levels. The decision of pursuing my masters in business emerged from my interaction with these individuals. As I worked more and more with these customers from, I felt the need to become better rounded, and to explore the different possibilities lying ahead of me. I expect a graduate education to strengthen my weaknesses, and better prepare me for all of these situations. I believe that the combination of my experience and a graduate degree will allow me to be a commodity to society, enabling me to achieve my professional goals.

Even though I have experience in a professional environment, I felt as if I am still lacking in some areas. Getting my undergraduate education has helped me start the building process, but I feel the need to go a step further and to solidify the foundation. This was one of the main reasons that I decided to pursue my graduate degree. Family usually plays a major role in decisions, and it was not any different in my case. As a teenager, when I was not as excited as I am now about learning, my dad used to give me several pep talks to reinforce me. One such talk I recall is when he told me that the one thing no one could take away from my life is education. At the time, I never took his words seriously.

Now that I look back, I see how true he was and that the knowledge that I gain will be with me till the end. Yes, I have an undergraduate degree, but a post graduate degree will open up a wide range of doors, such as, increasing career options, allowing me to switch careers and to diversify the types of organizations in which I can seek employment. The career possibilities range from accounting, finance, technology, and health care just to mention a few. Even though the salary factor has not played as significant of a role as others in my decision process, (I can retire) it is definitely an incentive, or maybe even more like icing on the cake.

So far, I have been discussing what I can achieve professionally through a graduate degree. Personal satisfaction has also played an important part in my decision. I still remember the happiness in my life as I completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Phoenix (UOP). I felt as if I had accomplished a great deal. I still thrive for that feeling of accomplishment, the personal joy when achieving my goals set in life. Through starting my graduate education, I have embarked on a new journey in search of knowledge, professional status, and of course self-satisfaction.

In conclusion, I believe by starting my graduate education, I have moved one step closer to my goal of making a mark in society, and in due course I will fulfill my goals for both my professional and personal life. I believe that all of my life experiences have been necessary to bring me to this point. I am mentally prepared and persistent enough to excel at any endeavor, and have developed the compassion and commitment that will drive me through the years to come. I look forward to my future with great anticipation, and know that the time has finally come for me to realize my dreams.

Gun Control

In order to reduce gun vilolence in the U.S., there should be stricter gun regulation.

Violence and crime in todays society is inevitable. Human nature is full of hatred, jealousy, and chaos. Throwing guns into the equation adds security for some, and vulnerability for others. Gun regulation is a topic of debate that has been going on for years and looks to be going on for many more to come. Although, each side of the issue seems to have a possibility of security for all, a healthy median of both sides proves to be hard to come by.

On the side of no gun regulation, advocates explain that a concealed handgun provides safety, and that people who defend themselves (with guns) may indirectly benefit other citizens. Cab drivers and drug dealers who carry guns produce a benefit for cab drivers and drug dealers without guns (Lott 18). This theory seems like it could be quite effective, but it brings questions of whether drug dealers would even obey gun regulation laws if imposed, since they are already braking the law by dealing drugs. One might ask why do drug dealers need guns? The answer is quite simple, most violent acts are due to drug and alcohol abuse (Write 1).

The ability to carry a concealed weapon provides safety to the insecure and vulnerable. Erika Schwartz (the first runner-up in the 17 Miss America pageant) made her decision to carry a gun after becoming a victim of a carjacking. Other women carry a weapon due to their fear of rape. Laurence Rockefellers reason to pack heat is because he carries large sums of money and feels that a gun will protect him from becoming a victim of a mugging (Lott ).

Advocates of no gun control say that the current gun regulation of a waiting period to help potential murders time to cool off is a total waste of time. Any one who leaves the scene of an argument, drives to a gun shop, buys a weapon, loads it with ammunition, and returns to kill the awaiting victim can hardly be said to be acting in the heat of the moment (Sullum).

Gun regulation only prevents the innocent from having the right to protect himself or herself. Felons and criminals will go to all costs to get a weapon to kill, gun regulation or not.

Whale Extinction

Extinction is currently one of the environment's most considerable problems. Natural extinction is an expected and inevitable process, but when animals become extinct due to human actions, the issue becomes controversial. Due to commercial whaling, as well as several other variables, these whales are included in the threatened species list, meaning that extinction is very possible. In order to prevent the absolute depletion of these species the International Whaling Commission should help protect these species by banning scientific research on highly endangered whales.

As whaling stopped in the early 100's, the reason for the species disappearance is hotly debated. Collisions with ships, entanglement in fishing nets and used for scientific research are thought to be prime causes. Thousands of whales are unnecessarily slaughtered each year. They are killed barbarically and are hunted to almost extinction for what whalers consider scientific research. This is unfair and pointless to have people around supporting whale hunters. There is enough information that we have about whales to not have to hunt them to extinction.

Douglas P. Nowacek of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Woods Hole, Massachusetts and his collegues have studied the right whale by placing a data gathering device (DTAG) with suction cups on the whales back. The Device records how deep the whale goes, water temperatures, underwater sounds, and how much the animal pitches forward, backward, or side to side. The data that Nowacek and his collegues concluded is that the "right whales were still swimming at depths beyond 40m, where seals, dolphins, and blue whales can simply sink"(Milius, 14). Frank E. Fish of West Chester (Pa.) University, who has studied aquatic locomotion claims, "During that slow rise, the whales don't have much maneverability and could easily get smacked by big ships"(Milius, 14). Philip Hamilton a whale biologist of the New England Aquarium in Boston says, "Of the identified causes of death among the highly imperiled North Atlantic right whales, ship collisions cause (…) about 0 percent," and "his best guess is that the species now consists of only 5 individuals."(Milius, 14).

Mark Baskaran of Wayne State University in Detroit and Cheryl Rosa of the University of Alaska, Fairbanks study the longevity of bowhead whales. Baskaran and Rosa perform their study by taking samples of the whales skin to measure radioactive lead and pentosidine. According to Rosa, "the whale doesn't even seem to notice" (Raloff, "Cetacean" 55). The whale may not notice but all whales need to be left alone and be able to enjoy themselves without having to worry that a human will distube them for scientific research.

The population of whales would increase if the world was to ban whaling. Scientists have studied these whales for many years to know enough about them to let them enjoy what life they have left. According to Gaia Vince, "scientist have calculated that saving two or three females a year could help in the decline of whales" (Vince, 57). However, accoding to Vince, "just saving two or three females a year could be difficult," because during calving female whales stay above water where they are in danger of either "being hit by a ship or tangled in a net (Vince, 57)." We could protect these whales that get hit by ships by having speed restrictions on vessels and to make a route for those operating around the whales' habitat. Whales that have got tangled by fishing nets would not have that problem anymore if fishermen would alter there fishing practice at times when whales are not around or use nets that would break lose when a whale traveled into it.

"Introducing LINEANCE… European Spa-Like Hair Removal At Home. Enter the affordable luxury of exquisitely smooth hair-free legs. LINEANCE is the hair removal line that is specially formulated to minimize harsh chemical odors, so it's as pleasant to your nose as it is to your skin. The contoured applicator and pampering skin nourishing treatment create a spa like experience. Close the door and enter the luxury of LINEANCE."

This is an advertisement for LINEANCE, which sells hair removal treatments and can be found in Glamour magazine. There is more to the advertisement than simply getting the product out there; it is used to sell on the desires of Americans. The advertisement falls within the parable of the Democracy of Goods as described by Marchand, "according to this parable, the wonders of modern mass production and distribution enabled every person to enjoy the society's most significant pleasure, convenience, or benefit" (151). This LINEANCE advertisement not only exercises the parable by playing on the desires of the middle class to enjoy a luxury of the elite, but exploits the culture of American advertising through sexual implicitness and an elitist approach.

Online writing services offer help on Spa-Like Experience in Progress

The LINEANCE advertisement was intentionally placed in Glamour magazine to attract middle class consumers. Glamour's contents are mostly elitist, with advertisements promoting the high culture of martinis, luxury automobiles, and expensive jewelry. Such contents captivate the desires of young middle class females, which make up the majority of Glamour's readership, to become more like the elite. Within the magazine are instructions on how to look and be like someone at the top of the ladder. For someone already part of high culture, she would not read such a magazine to tell her how to dress or where to shop because she probably pays for her own personal shopper and stylist. Also in the magazine is a section titled "Life and Happiness Your Work." This section gives advice about landing a job, being a better employee, and provides interview techniques and inspiration for career goals. Once someone has already made it, she is more likely to be giving the advice than to be taking it. It seems appropriate for LINEANCE to be advertised in Glamour because middle class consumers are interested in sharing in even the simplest forms of "elitism," such as the LINEANCE hair removal treatment that promises a spa-like experience.

Placing the LINEANCE advertisement in Glamour easily arouses the emotions of consumers. Consumers looking at this advertisement are not likely to be thinking about how the product works or if it works at all. They are simply hooked on to the product just by the idea of having a spa experience that they have never had. It is more exciting to think about being in a candle lit bathroom with a running bubble bath rather than to be questioning the quality and worth of the product. "Appealing to our subconscious emotions rather than to our conscious intellects, advertisements are designed to exploit the discontentments fostered by the American dream, the constant desire for social success and the material awards that accompany it" (Solomon 161).

Such stirred emotions may also be geared towards sexuality to sell the hair removal treatment. In the advertisement, it pictures a woman adorned in just a towel sitting alone in her bathroom. She has a leg raised and placed on the chair. She is barely leaning over with a hand gently caressing the smoothness of her leg. Her other hand is placed directly above her breast securing the towel in place, as if her breasts might just fall out from leaning over. On her face is a serene, pleased expression that can be translated as being sexually aroused. In the background are the barely visible LINEANCE hair removal bottles with a few lighted candles nearby. On the side of the ad is a hanging doorknob placard that says, "Spa Experience in Progress." It is symbolically associated to a "Do Not Disturb" placard, in which a person would automatically assume that sexual intimacy is occurring behind the closed doors. The advertisement is used to show that the LINEANCE product contributes to this sexually heated moment.

The LINEANCE advertisement is also working the parable of the Democracy of Goods formula here, advertising that its product is an "affordable luxury." According to Marchand, "the concept of the Democracy of Goods asserted that although the rich enjoyed a great variety of luxuries, the acquisition of their one most significant luxury would provide anyone with the ultimate satisfaction" (151). When comparing the lifestyles of an upper class and middle class woman, it seems that the upper class woman typically does not have to work as hard as her lesser counterpart because she already has plenty of money. The middle class woman struggles to possess more and is not able to spend very much money beyond the necessities of clothes, food, and shelter to provide for her family. And in this case, spending money for a day at the spa is an extravagant luxury for your everyday woman. With all the bills and essentials to pay for, the middle class woman could never dream of spending those precious dollars just to pamper herself at a spa. Even on a talk show such as Oprah, when a woman wins an all expense paid day trip to the spa, every woman watching is in awe wishing they could win. The spa is not affordable for everyone and, therefore, is linked to the rich who are able to afford to throw their money out for such simple pleasures of a spa. The advertisement leads middle class consumers to believe that they, too, can afford and enjoy the spa-like experience that they have been deprived of by the upper class with this one product.

Because the upper class woman seems to work less, she seems to have more free time. As for the middle class woman, she seems to keep running out of time to do everything necessary. For her, free time seems inconceivable. Middle class mothers can commonly be termed as "soccer moms," juggling their time between work and taking care of the home and children. Having time in solitude is minimal, so the thought of a day at the spa is out of the question. It is generally assumed that the upper class woman has more time because she probably has a nanny that takes care of her children and hires a cleaning service to tidy up her country estate. She has the resources to pay people to take care of her responsibilities so she may enjoy time to herself, whereas the middle class woman has to do everything on her own. The middle class woman desires to have this leisure time that the other possesses. The advertisement conveys that with this LINEANCE product, the everyday woman can take the time out of her busy schedule to have a moment to herself. But it isn't just time alone; it is luxury time she would find at a spa, but for cheaper in her own home. The LINEANCE ad is pitching a product that is not only an "affordable luxury" of cost, but of time.

Of all the advertisements in America schemed to attract the desires of American consumers, this LINEANCE advertisement is just one example. With a competitive nature, Americans are constantly trying to "better" themselves and reach for social distinction. To find confirmation during their journeys, they turn to material possessions to determine their social status. It is not difficult to see why advertising agencies exploit these desires to sell items such as a bar of soap to a piece of the moon. American companies manufacture status symbols because American consumers want them (Solomon 16). Solomon states that American advertisers "manipulate us into buying their wares… for advertising campaigns are not sources of product information, they are exercises of behavior modification" (161). Although advertisements such as the LINEANCE product continue to play on the parable of the Democracy of Goods and on our desires, it is only because we let them.

European Development On The Maori

The effects of the European contact was devasting on the Maori. The Maoris faced rapid depopulation and the Maoris had no choice but to live through the European ways or by dying out completely. Even though there were a lot of changes in which the Maori lived their life, they were not completely absorbed in the Europeans way and the traditional way of life that remained basically unchanged could resurface at anytime. The only things that they had to accept were the European diseases other than this, they chose to live their life in a traditional manner such as competing with other tribes for land and mana, but those with Pakeha goods had a more chance of winning.

The Maori population fell because of the contact of new diseases and drugs and the use of the musket.

The main problem for the Maori was the lack of immunity to the diseases, the ones that were common in Britain but unheard of in New Zealand. When the Maoris came in contact with these diseases, they would hit hard causing death, not short-term illnesses that the Europeans experienced. The four main things which made the diseases worse were the housing conditions, the change of location of many villages, methods of treating the diseases and the lack of personal hygiene.

The musket had a great impact in Maori life. From their first experience of seeing the musket in action, the Maoris were determined to get the weapon into their hands. The Maori would sacrafice everything to get these weapons to beat their enemies.

Tribal systems for the exchange of goods changed greatly after the arrival of European traders, whalers, sealers and eventually permanent settlers. The new items of trade were available to the Maori bought changes to many of the traditional ways of life. Food supplies were greatly increased and Barter gave way to a money economy and the scene was set for new pressures.

The Missionaries that came to New Zealand had one main aim to get the christian message through to the Maori. A secondary aim was to bring 'civilisation' to the Maori. For years the missionaries worked without the rewards of seeing the Maori become Christians. Suddenly this changed and Christianity became popular and widespread.

From these effects, the Maori
