The Assimilation of the Ancient Frontier

The Roman Empire was one of the largest and most successful civilizations to ever grace the face of this earth. They conquered and subjugated all the people around them. For centuries, Rome's borders expanded and changed, but there was always a bleeding edge, the rugged frontier. This frontier was a boiling pot of assimilation, Rome's greatest tool of expansion. Without assimilation the empire of Rome would have never reached out of Italy or conquered nearly as many people. The three most prominent catalysts to this process known as assimilation were an active military presence, the integration and settlement of Roman peoples, and the adaptation of religious practices.

The most important catalyst to assimilation was the conquerors themselves, the Roman generals. They used three tested methods to gain new territory and therefore assimilate new peoples. These were invasion, displacement, and diplomacy. Of these, invasion was the more favored option; however, there are many examples in which uncooperative peoples are simply displaced. Some examples are when Augustus moved the Thracian Getae across the Danube and when Marcus Aurelius moved the German Quadi to Pannonia. Also, many places were annexed by means of diplomacy through treaties of friendship and promise of trade. After this process was complete, the constant presence of the Roman soldiery both secured the land and made the Roman presence visible to Roman and conquered peoples alike. The military also made the people feel Roman by allowing them to enlist in the military or perhaps just hiring them as mercenaries. The use of gentile and laeti troops was accepted throughout the frontiers, although it was not necessary in the East. Many conquered peoples did enlist, as is shown by the fact that most soldiers from the Western frontier were Spanish, Gallic, Dalmatian, and North African. Enlisting not only gave these soldiers a chance to see the rest of the Empire but also gave them strong loyalties to the state. In the Eastern frontier conquered peoples did not simply enlist; they were completely assimilated. Their already Hellenized armies were just shaped into part of the Roman war machine. When the soldiers stayed on the conquered land for long enough, they eventually began gaining personal attachments to the land they had fought for. The soldiers eventually gained land, villas, and even wives. This, of course, eventually led to genetic assimilation as the two groups of people began coupling. With their switch from soldiers to landlords, they were not the only ones making a change. There were also private landowners who began furnishing their own personal soldiery to defend their land, although this did not happen until the late Empire. All of these things made the Roman military an important part of the assimilation process.

The next most important catalyst to the assimilation of conquered peoples was the Roman policy of integration and settlement. After a land was securely in Roman hands, the Romans would quickly send a large influx of Roman citizenry to settle in the new lands, sometimes even pushing other people out. So many Romans came and settled among the existing people, sharing their customs, and gaining new customs in return, that some large archeological sites are not distinguishable as that of Roman settlers or that of existing peoples. These new settlers established themselves in the existing community and then molded it to their own will to some extent. For example, there are records of some wealthy Roman settlers turning their hillside villas into almost fortress-like monstrosities, complete with turrets, walls, and all the accoutrements of siege warfare (although it is worthy of note that this practice did not occur until the late Empire). These wealthy Romans would also then hire groups of locals to act as their personal armies (as mentioned before). One example of these groups is the German oiketai. They were said to set up camp alongside the villas of their employers. Besides financial ties, many settlers, like the soldiers, also established families with the native people. This intermarriage helped integrate the land and people to the Imperial system. This also made conflicting loyalties less of a problem, therefore ensuring peace. By being taken into the Roman fold, the native people gained a great boon; they were now part of the most prosperous empire on the earth. Protection from their enemies, established roads, a high standard of living, fair and just law, and a higher chance of economic success are just a few of the benefits these people gained. Some Roman generals took even further steps by installing programs of education; teaching the young native people to read and write in Latin, to participate in the fine art of rhetoric, and about Roman law. These young people were now true Roman citizens.

The Roman religion was affected by assimilation more than any other aspect of life. This is because if the conquered were shown that their religion was the same as the Roman religion then they would identify with the Romans, thereby making peace much more probable. In the beginning of Roman state religion, Jupiter, Mars, and Quirinus were the supreme triad of gods. This quickly changed as the method of assimilation became more obvious. The Romans were tolerant of new religions and adopted many new gods, all of which came from conquered cultures. This was, after all, to their benefit. It began before the Romans had even broken out of Italy. Other Italic communities quickly influenced them; new gods began to appear around the 7th century B.C.. A wider and much more significant influence, however, was that of the Greek and Middle Eastern cults from about the rd century B.C.. Old Roman deities were equated to the Greek gods and accordingly were given their attributes and myths. Important cults of worship such as that of Dionysus and Apollo were brought to Rome. In the last two centuries of the republic, religious feeling rapidly degenerated. The Roman people, needing a new and more satisfying religion, turned toward the religious mysteries and the Middle Eastern cults. The most prominent were those of the Great Mother (Cybele), Isis and Osiris, Sol, and Mithra. Old Roman worship had been controlled, impersonal, and concerned with matters of the everyday world. The new cults, which centered on the individual, promised personal salvation and blessed afterlife. This shows just how adaptable assimilation made the Roman culture; their religious practices and beliefs were changed completely in a matter of centuries.

The Roman Empire spanned centuries and conquered from sea to sea because of brilliant stratagems like assimilation. They conquered many cultures in this way. They adapted continuously because of this, eventually adopting Christianity over the old Religio Romana, which had changed dramatically in the last century. But obviously it was not enough, for eventually they did fall. Their empire crumbled into fragments and warring states. But the Romans influence upon the cultures that they touched will be felt for all time, if not simply through their presence in the language, the architecture, and the people.

Concept Paper: The Memory Process System

Many of the new facts discovered about the memory process have been made easier, by comparing the modern computer and the human brain. The three major stages that have been identified are the encoding stage, a storage stage, and a retrieval stage.

Encoding is a stage that receives the sensory information in a code; just as computers receive a sensory code from the keyboard. This information is then translated and stored in the memory. Storage, which happens to be the second stage of the memory process, is also a lot like a computer. With people, the more frequently something occurs, the more permanent it becomes. Retrieval is the third stage better known as the recall stage in the memory process. Example, when a computer program has been named and stored, we can call it up, by name and use it again. Humans do it in a much similar way, only we call it bring a memory into the state of consciousness. The memory is organized which makes it easier to give thoughts certain clues to retrieve it.

The memory process is something that I struggle with for some unknown reason, or maybe it's because I don't use it enough. My memory process is a little weak in the recall stage. I say that because usually when I am speaking to someone or taking test, the answer is right there but I just cannot come up with the answer. My first two stages I believe are fine but as long as one of them isn't working properly the memory process can be expected to fail time and time again. I have many thoughts and memories in my head, some which I wanted to remember, and others that I just rather not have just taking up space in my brain.

Things I don't think about knowingly, like dreams don't seem to last to long in my memory. In the result of this study I hope to help better my memory by understanding the process, techniques, and duties of each process. Although when I sit down and think about all the different thoughts, ideas, and memories I have, it seems as if tons of information is stored in their but it also seems as though I have a lot of holes and empty moments in my memory from having an incomplete memory process.

Religion has always been a fascination to me. Especially religions, which are the opposite from mine. Islam and Christianity are two, which intrigue a person like me. This essay will try and give a better understanding of the differences between these two religions. The differences in their beliefs and practices will be looked at in this essay. Islam, a religion consisted of mostly Muslims, puts God before everything else.

The word Islam means surrender or submission to the will of God(Esposito 6). The Muslims follow the Islamic law. Muslims believe that law is religious and that is why they feel the need to obey these laws. God is very important in the Islamic religion. God is everything to them. The Muslims pray to Allah five times a day. Unlike Christians Islamic people are able to have more than one wife without it being frowned upon. In the Christian religion we must only have one wife and not five at one time. All Muslims must follow the Five Pillars and accept them. The first one is The Profession of Faith this means that the Muslims know that they have only one God (Allah) and that Muhammad is God's messenger. It also lets makes them remember that polytheism is not allowed and is a sin that is unforgivable in the Islamic religion. Muslims must do this at least once in their lifetime. The second one is Prayer Muslims, like stated previously, pray five times a day. In Islam the pray while facing their holy city named Mecca. The five times in which they pray are daybreak, at noon, in the mid-afternoon, at sunset and during the evening. God is most great(Esposito 0) is said every time before an act of worship followed by bowing and recitation of prayers including the one from the Quran. They end their prayer with the Shahada. The third one is Almsgiving (zakat) this is paying alms tax (poor tithe) and if they can afford it pay an annual wealth tax. The Muslims see this as an act of both worship or thanksgiving to God and of service to the community (Esposito 1). This is a tax that helps the poor. The fourth one is The Fast or Ramadan Every year the Muslims must fast for the whole month or Ramadan, which is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. They do this from dawn until sunset. During this time they must not eat, drink, or have any sexual activity but on one condition only if their health permits them to. Ramadan is a time for the Muslims to reflect. At the end of Ramadan they have a huge celebration called the Feats of the Break of the Fast. This lasts for three days and families come from far to exchange presents with one another and they feast. If a Muslim is incapable of doing this because they are pregnant or sick then the must feed a needy person for everyday they miss. The fifth one is Pilgrimage (the Hajj) This is when each Muslim, who is financially able, goes to Mecca (in Saudi Arabia) for the annual pilgrimage. This takes place on the twelfth month of the Muslim lunar calendar. The Muslim men must wear a white sheet over them and have either a shaved head or a symbolic tuft of hair (Esposito ). The women may wear a national dress or a long white dress covering their heads, of course. They must not wear jewellery or perfume. Sexual activity and hunting are prohibited during this time. When the pilgrims arrive close to Mecca they shout I am here, O Lord, I am here!(Esposito ) When they enter Mecca they go the Grand Mosque (this is where the Kaba is located). The Muslims go round the Kaba seven times in a counter clockwise motion. The Muslims end the pilgrimage with the Feast of Sacrifice. They sacrifice animals during this time like their sheep and goats and camels. This symbolizes that they are willing to sacrifice anything especially what is most important to them. The meat from these animals is mostly consumed and the majority of it is given to the needy. The pilgrimage last three days and this is when the Muslims pray and visit family and friends as well as rejoice. Although the Struggle (Jihad) is not in the Five Pillars it is still very important. Jihad means, strive or struggle in the way of God(Esposito ). Muslims usually consider this one the sixth pillar.

Christianity has been around for many years now. Christians believe that God created everything we see. Christians believe in many things from God to Life after Death. Christians believe that God made everything that we see and that we don't see. They believe that Jesus was the Son of God and that he was sent here to save mankind from death and sin(http//pages.ivillage.com/joy_acornhouse/onegodma nypathways/id1.html). Christians also believe in the Trinity, which is God as Father and son and holy spirit(http//pages.ivillage.com/joy_acornhouse/onegodmanypathways/id1.html). Christians also believe that after death there is life. The church is very important to Christians because this is when they can really communicate with God. Baptism is also important because this mean that you are accepted into God's Kingdom. Christians also believe that Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, was crucified died and was buried. That he rose again and was ascended into Heaven. They also believe that he will come again one day to judge the living and the dead. It is said that if you repent your sins then the Lord will forgive you. Most Christians follow the Bible. This tells them the story of Jesus and God and how the world was created. Christians must obey the Ten Commandments or shall be punished by the Lord. Some of them include you shall have no other Gods before me, thou shall not steal, remember to keep the Sabbath day holy, thou shall not commit adultery…(http//www.the10commandments.info/). Christians celebrate Christmas Good Friday and Easter in order to remember Jesus Christ's birth the day he was crucified and died and the day he rose. On these holidays families get together and feast and exchange presents (Christmas and Easter). The way of celebrating is almost the same as Muslim's in the sense that they both feast and visit family and exchange presents. On Christmas Eve at midnight Christians attend church to pray since Jesus was born on this day. At Easter the church holds a special ceremony for Jesus. Christians are not supposed to eat meat on Christmas only fish.

The Islamic religion is not so different from the Christian religion because both believe in one God and a prophet of his. Although they have different ways of celebrating and different beliefs that should not give any of them a reason not to explore and learn about the other religion. This essay was intended to learn the different beliefs of these two religions and hopefully it has fulfilled these intentions. Those who knew nothing about these two religions have hopefully learned more about them.

· Public Policy policy about allowing industry to exist.

-the custom in the industry don't consider other's around; such as (save the whale)

Nick Caraway, the narrator of the book, has a dream of working hard and making his own way. He dose not want any charity. Nick's family is very successful in the wholesale hardware business. They have been in the business for generations. Nick states "My family has been prominent well-to-do people … for generations"(7). Nick dose not wish to follow the path of easy wealth, the path where everything will be handed to him. Nick says "I decided to go east and learn the bond business"(7). Nick has chosen his own path to success and wealth. He wants to be independent from his family and everyone else. Nick has moved away to start from scratch and go his own way.

George Wilson wants to leave all his troubles behind and start fresh. George found out his wife was cheating on him. George does not know what else to do but to leave town. George states, "I've been here too long. I want to get away. My wife and I want to go west" (10). George was extremely upset by the news of adultery. So much so he became physically ill. His life was not working out so he wanted to begin a new one. He decides to uproot and leave.

Jay Gatsby, the main character, dreams of having a picture perfect life with Daisy. Gatsby is in a heated argument with Tom when he declares "your wife doesn't love you…She's never loved you. She loves me" (17). Gatsby longs for a life where he is the only man Daisy ever loved. Gatsby wants this perfect life so bad he is blind to the reality around him.
