For many decades, the Montana Power Company demonstrated the very best of American capitalism. It granted cheap, reliable electricity to the people of Montana, excellent benefits for the thousands of employees, and dependable dividends to it's stockholders. The citizens of Montana had no complaints and were happy. Those who were unhappy were the executives officers and their Wall Street investment banking firm, Goldman Sachs, decided that there was more money to be to made in the world of telecommunications. Montana Power executives pushed a bill via the state legislatures that would deregulate the price of electricity and open the market to competition. This was supposed to be good for the consumers. Sure enough within six months of the bills passage, the company now began to sell off its generating assets. Montana Power announced that is getting out of the business entirely. Why did the executives decide to sell off the assets of a reliable, safe utility stock to a very, very highly speculative, risky telecom stock?

Analysis/Recommendations

The people of Montana were stunned. Montana Power joined the high-tech telecommunications company called Touch America. Most importantly that this decision was based on the advice of Goldman Sachs, who obviously did not consult the stockholders. This decision was completely unethical and had no form of communication between the top management and its shareholders. The company's plan was to take its .7 billion dollars in the sale of Montana Power's assets and bury the profits in the ground.

Why did Bob Gannon rush out of the energy business and into the telecom? It was simply for the money, and by the pressure from his financial advisers at Goldman Sachs. It was a 'stupid' decision, to sell off the business that you know is generating income for thousands of employees and provided a steady return for shareholders. Goldman Sachs executives made many trips to Montana urging the company to get out of the energy business. They were the ones that pressured Gannon to selling off Montana Powers assets. Goldman Sachs did not care about the shareholders; they were the drivers and wanted money. An important factor was the contract with Montana Power and Goldman Sachs that any advice provided is exclusively for the senior management. This is translated into 'do not tell the shareholders.' Did Goldman Sachs know that this was not a good deal for the stockholders? Goldman Sachs was to be paid a flat fee as the financial adviser, and was to be paid commission on every asset that was sold. I don't think they cared very much, because ultimately they were the ones making money.

Conclusion

Someday, the Montana citizens just might wake up and wonder why Montana Power Company stockholders never insisted that the Montana Power management should take all the proceeds from selling off the power assets, and instead of dumping it into the fiber-optics hole (Touch America), use the money to buy cheap long term power contracts and continue to serve Montana homes, business and industries, instead of letting Montana's economy decline. It was unfortunate to see thousands of Montana citizens loose money in a stable energy stock. The reason for failure can be pointed directly at Goldman Sachs and Bon Gannon who betrayed their ethics, if they ever had any.

Initially, William Shakespeare, perhaps the greater playwright of all time, wrote a number of works consisting of comedies, sonnets, and tragedies. Arguably William Shakespeare's magnum opus, Hamlet, is the classic example of a tragedy. In almost all tragedies the hero suffers, and usually dies at the end. Othello stabs himself, Romeo and Juliet commit suicide, Brutus falls on his sword, and like them Hamlet dies by being cut with a poison tipped sword. But sometimes a hero doesn't need to die. There are more elements needed to proclaim a character a tragic hero in a Shakespearean sense. The tragic hero must display strength of character, be fully aware of every assault upon him, and is endowed with the power of expression. In Hamlet, the tragic hero is weaved into the theme. Characters, Ophelia, Laertes, and Hamlet all pose important roles in the novel. Two of which are tragic heroes, one of which does not meet or exceed the criteria.

First of all, Ophelia does not have all of the elements needed to be considered a Shakespearean tragic hero. She doesn't have the strength of character needed to match the harmful matters thrown at her. Ophelia doesn't have an opinion of her own. "I do not know, my lord, what I should think." (1..110) When her verbose father tells her what to do, she is submissive and obeys immediately. "I shall obey, my lord."(1..14) Next, Ophelia can't be a tragic hero because she is not aware of the assault against her. When the megalomaniac, Claudius, and his drooling sycophant Polonius want to determine the root of Hamlet's insanity, they use poor obsequious Ophelia as bait for Hamlet and she isn't aware if this sneaky scheme.

Secondly, Laertes does exhibit qualities of a tragic hero in a Shakespearean sense. He has a very strong character needed to survive in Elsinore. He stands up to powerful characters, such as the King. "How came he be dead? I'll not be juggled with!" (4.5.141) He is not always aware of the assaults against him, but sometimes demonstrates that ability. Laertes uses the power of expression with his sister. He tells her that Hamlet really doesn't love her and that everything he says are lies. "Think it no more." (1..1)

Finally, the most important tragic hero, Hamlet exhibits all three elements of a hero the best out of the three characters. Hamlet is paranoid and worrisome about everything. Although Hamlet is over analytical, he has a strong character. He stands up to his mother and uncle when he doesn't approve of their marriage. "Mother, you have my father much offended." (.4.11) He knows of the assaults planned against him, but thought too much and didn't act on them. Since he didn't act on his first thoughts, he is stabbed and told of the plot against him by Laertes. "I can no more the king, the kings to blame." (5..40) The embittered Hamlet uses his power of expression to anyone around him, but is careful of what he says.

But at the same time though I find myself being partly convinced when I read about how the brain, according to apparently respected Dr. Joe Rosen, adapt to create neural maps for new body parts, so they thereby become a "natural" part of body. But just because something is scientifically possible and explainable should therefor it be acceptable? Dr. Rosen appears to think so. And sadly the article is probably right in its comment on that if the technology and the will to experiment exist it is almost impossible for even the most overwhelming ethical qualms to prevent these surgeries from taking place. This comment leaves for me a feeling of magtesløshed and ærgrelse , the same felling I could imagine many people would get from reading the excerpt from the article "Gene cheats aim to conquer the Olympics"

This excerpt tells about how athletes with a single injection can manipulate with their DNA in favour of their athletic abilities. I already think that it is very wrong for athletes to take steroids and such as they already do, but to mess with your DNA, that it down right sick and in this context, as the article mentions, also the end of real competition and sportsmanship as we know it, because of the fact that this can not be detected through tests. So these people are not just affecting themselves they are also ruining it for, in this case, other athletes who believe in competition through human capability, in its original sense.

Another situation where you affect others by making a use of the technological advantages is commented in the tekststykke "A modern Baby".
