Environmental problems in Belize manifest themselves in different ways, from irresponsible, large-scale commercial developments to small-scale activities undertaken by those Belizeans simply seeking a means of survival. However, society has to recognize that one of the underlying causes of such problem lies with the distribution and status of the nation’s land. Today, a variety of land-related issues impact people lives on a daily basis, and have serious implications for the nation’s development. Hence, successive governments have used land allocation as a political tool. Our outdated legislation does little to ensure that land-related decisions are taken in a fair and transparent manner, or that land is used wisely. Furthermore, Belize currently has no formal guiding principles on land issues in the form of a policy. There are no sound and regulated land policies in the region. While there have been attempts at land use classification, there are no established land management programs. Little is done to prevent people from occupying and farming steep hillsides. The land tenure situation compounds the problem. Farmers who do not own land tend to cultivate steep inaccessible mountainsides. These farmers have no incentive to undertake soil conservation measures. Unplanned housing also occurs on lands for which there are no title. Today, most of us live in a capitalist world where land is regarded as a commodity. We take land as something that has an exchange value and can be traded. This attitude has separated land from man man has given up his proper role of protector on his land resources.

We buy things everyday and are willing to pay any price for them. Some do not know what they are buying until they open the package and see what is inside. It is true that for some of us that it is very easy to determine which product is good or bad, but advertiser had increased its way of advertising to those way. So nowadays, there are so many disappointments with what is bought. First, they tend to use small labels that cannot be read easily by every consumer. The second one is using weasel words to exaggerate the meaning of the product to make it more stand out, trustworthy. Finally, they would use the word “natural” as a way to make consumer think it would be a clean buy. In this decade, marketer and advertiser use these different types of trick to lure consumers into their net for a profitable gain.

For a clean gain, most advertiser use small label, usually at the bottom of the flyer, to lure consumer into their net. Small label has been used widely all over the world. It is most highly used in contract work, but nowadays people use it to advertising for their product. When it comes for consumer to buy, they tend to not care if the product really up to its claim. They just go in and buy without hesitation, and without reading the small print that is usually at the bottom of the ads. When consumers see that the product does not work as what they expected, they try to return it. But here the catch, the sellers usually say that the product is fine with what they claim it to be. Then most sellers would point out the small print at the bottom or in the box of the product to show that consumer cannot return a product it is working correctly. There is nothing the consumers can do to get his money back. Small label can be very powerful when it is used in a right way, or it can be useless if not handle correctly.

Using weasel words is a way for advertiser to advertise their product and make it looks as good as a pumpkin pie, but it really just a salty egg that has been disguised itself to look as good as the pumpkin pie. Weasel words can be very convincing when it is integrated into a product’s ad. Words such as “best”, “help”, “virtually”, “new and improved”, “acts fast”, “like magic”, and many more are examples of weasel words. These words say to consumer that they need to have this product and they would be stupid if they do not buy it. That is the image consumers always get when they are into a specific product they want to buy. Advertisers use this benefit to strategize their way of advertising to fit the image. It is good that the advertising for a product is impressive, but can the product be up to its claim? There are many products out in the market are not what they claim to be and some are unusable by consumers. Even though we got trick by the ads, we cannot blame the company who advertises the product. We can only blame ourselves for getting excited over a product because of the weasel words they use, and start overlooking the true form of the product.

“Natural” is a word that can be very deceiving to a lot of consumers. Almost all the marketer use “natural” to make their product looks freshly make from the core of its root. That is what fool many consumer nowadays. They really think that natural really mean natural. Rarely a product is really natural, but most or even all products are just faking their product as nature make. Take strawberry juice for example, they use dicalcium, trisodium phosphates, and some colors depend on what color the product is going to make. There is only 5 percents or less of the actually strawberry juice is in there. Not many people out there really care about searching information to a product that they buy, especially in the food department. Like comparing two companies, one says that they have orange; the other one says that they have natural orange. Without researching about the product, which one would you buy? You would tend to buy the natural orange, am I correct? The word “natural” can be very simple and innocent, but the usage of it is very powerful in daily advertising.

False advertising can be very dangerous and misleading. These are some examples of false advertising in this decade. The first one is from Phone Company, such as Verizon, Sprint, Cingular, and AT&T. They say there will be no charge for roaming all for all call, but they never tell you the limit of locations you could call in. People get charge because they thought that it is free to call while roaming, but they cannot do anything about it. The ads do point the location but in a very small print in the contract when we signed the agreement paper. It is our fault for not reading the contract in the first place. Second, a lot of us might have heard about weight loss issue and how a fake weight loss program is very hard to determine. Many of us want to lose our weight but do not know what to do. So they rely on fast weight loss pill and other kinds of diet. That is when marketers show their skill of advertising to those who are desperately in need of losing weight. Marketers make a lot of profit this way even with fake product with a really good ad.

There are many more products out there that are being advertised using weasel words, small labels and other technique of advertising right now at this moment, but the bad part about it is that no one really knows which product is good or bad. From now on, we should be on high alert when ads use weasel words or small labels. We should read and check everything carefully to see its real form before we hand them our credit card. I know it is tough, but that is the only way to stop false advertising.

A Hero’s Quest

There are many heroes in literature from the past and the present. These heroes become

proclaimed people in their society whether they are men or women. However, these figures

cannot become heroes without a quest. The hero is an archetype, but more specifically the quest

live paper help

is what defines the accomplishments that one has succeeded. The quest of a hero is seen in men

such as Gilgamesh, Luke Skywalker, and Odysseus. Even though all of these men come from

different time periods, backgrounds, and have achieved different quests, they are all similar as

being a man with a goal. The quest of a hero requires one to undertake a long journey during

which he/she ventures into a region of supernatural wonder, forces are encountered and victory is

won, and the hero comes back with the power to bestow thoughts on man.

One of the earliest quests of a hero was shown in a man named Gilgamesh. Gilgamesh

went on a two-part journey. The first part was when Gilgamesh and his best friend Enkidu sought

to fight the evil beast Humbaba. They defeated the monster together, however Enkidu shortly

dies from being sick.. Gilgamesh therefore becomes afraid and goes on the second part of the

quest seeking immortality. Even though this journey ends up being pointless, he is thought of as

being a hero. This is because he was a wonderful man that defeated the most terrible enemies.

Gilgamesh was a character in the book Gilgamesh which was written on a clay tablet

before Christ was born. Even though this book is quite aged, all of the aspects of an epic hero’s journey are included. Gilgamesh begins a long journey where he faces a monster and comes back

as a strong, kind-hearted hero that improved the situation of the city he ruled.

Another famous journey switches time periods to that of the famed Luke Skywalker. He

begins his quest by leaving a farm in Tatooine to follow his dreams and go among the planets and

droids. He soon thereafter meets Obi-Wan, who is a Jedi Knight. Obi-Wan teaches Luke how to

become a Jedi Knight and especially trains him on the Force. After his training he becomes

acquainted with Han Solo and they set off for their mission to Alderan. There ship becomes

sucked in by the Death Star, however they learn that Princess Leia was there and devise a plan to

rescue her. The mission is successful until he sees his good friend Ben Kenobi become struck

down by Darth Vader, however Luke flees. The journey was not over yet, Luke planned an

attack against the Imperials, and destroyed the Death Star. He became a great hero and was

known everywhere.

Luke Skywalker’s quest is another perfect example of a hero’s journey. Even though

everything about the story is different from the one of Gilgamesh, the general steps of the quest

were the same. In both instances, they set out for a long quest in which they conquered evil

beings and came home as great heroes. Gilgamesh improved his city, while the teachings of Luke

were known throughout the world.

Lastly, are the adventures of Odysseus. Odysseus originally sets out to fight in the battle

of Troy, however ten years have passed and he had still not returned. This is because Odysseus

had encountered many different types of beings, which prevented his return. An example of one

of these beings is the beautiful nymph Calypso who had imprisoned him on her island for years.

Odysseus is finally able to return home, but not without any troubles. He becomes the king of his

island again. Because of his quest, he is able to supply a great story and hope for men who are

seeking a journey.

Odysseus’ journey follows the guidelines of a hero’s quest, just like that of Gilgamesh and

Luke Skywalker. However, it is very easy to tell that the mood of all these stories and quest’s are

much different. As it is shown, it does not matter what kind of story it is or where and when it

was from originally. All that matters for the quest’s to be similar is that the epic hero’s journey

follows the steps of the archetype.

All the characters that have been mentioned are all heroes, but more or less epic heroes.

This is because even though they have gone on great adventures and have conquered, they are

human because of their flaws. Gilgamesh’s flaw is that he afraid of death and denies the fact he

will die. Luke Skywalker’s fault is his temper which in turn causes him to perform dumb actions.

Finally, Odysseus may be one of the few characters in literature that possesses many weaknesses,

but overcomes these. These include pride and sensuality. These weaknesses do not make the

quest any easier, but they do humanize it.

Gilgamesh, Luke Skywalker, and Odysseus are all characters that represent the archetype

of a hero and its quest. The quest of a hero requires one to take a long journey, where he endures

challenges and prevails, and also to return home and bestow his thoughts and achievements

among man. These epic heroes and their quest provide literature with many dazzling stories and

everlasting enjoyment.

Love is a bittersweet thing. It can be amazing and heart opening, making a person search his or her soul, but it can also tear the same person apart. Long are the moments I myself fall into my own chaotic ideas and loves. Sometimes it inspires me and lets me fill page after page with blue and black inks, forming words and trying to make my emotions into something coherent. Other times I cannot write for the conflicting thoughts and feelings inside me. The love becomes a kind of constant companion, an ache that escalates into a piercing pain when the object of these amorous thoughts comes into view. A smile, or even a glance, from the person in question can send a love-struck soul into a maze of little hearts, flowers, and fantasies made of romantic red roses with very sharp thorns. Seeing that one person sets me upon Cloud Number Nine until the harsh reality of not being with that person on that cloud decides to make its appearance and drag me down below earth.

love is like a drug, an addiction that is immensely hard to break. I need to see him nearly every day or be far away from him, nearly enough to put him out of mind for a time. Yet one simple object can bring up memories and fantasies to bring a smile to my lips and deliver a jab to my heart. It can be a physical pain; that is how it is for me. I just watch him out of the corner of my eye, or I pretend not to be looking at him when he is the only thing filling my vision. I almost treat him like a beloved work of art, a moving statue sculpted in my dreams delivered here to real life with a personality to match. Dreams that have come to life are amazing things once one recognizes them for what they are.

There were and will continue be artists whose work was/is greatly influenced by the art of Africa. The earliest of these artists were found in France in the beginning of the 0th century. Such artists are Maurice de Vlamick, Emil Nolde, Andre Derain and Amedeo Modigliani. Of the artists listed Vlamick is considered to be the first of these to realize and appreciate the value of African Art.

Vlaminck a self-professed ``primitive, dismissed “affluent” art seen in the Louvre, and chose to collect African masks which in turn became invaluable to early 0th-century art. Derain also showed a “primitive” wildness. His late work, after 11, showed the influence of many styles-including African sculpture-and tended to become increasingly traditional and derivative, characterized by muted color and elaborated technique.

Emil Nolde was another artist who showed interest in the arts of Africa. His grotesque faces, as seen in the Head of Christ (below), demonstrate this interest in primitive societies and cultures. Nolde belonged to the group of artists characterized by German Expressionism. Their goal was not to illustrate objective reality but the subjective emotions and responses that objects and events that excited the artist and people in general.

Many German Expressionists studied sub-equatorial African art, trying to incorporate elements such as the masks and carvings into their works. Franz Marc was another such expressionist. Marc had painted many different things; but found his passion and talent with animals. Prior to Marc, only ethnic and primeval artists only placed an emphasis on animals.

Amedeo Modigliani was an Italian painter who spent most of his life painting in Paris. At first Modigliani’s work was strongly influenced by Toulouse-Lautrec. However, after meeting with Vlamick in Paris and being exposed to African art (especially masks) he soon adapted the unique style of elongated distortion and strong linear rhythms of African sculpture. His portrait sculptures are reflective of African masks. This is evidenced in paintings such as Madame Kisling and Adrienne (woman with bangs) seen below respectively.

As organizations are challenged to do things better, faster and cheaper--often with fewer people and resources--employee motivation and rewards are critical tools. Improving employees performance is a complex process. Some common strategies include incentives for executives, middle managers and employee groups, performance management systems, and enhanced communication programs.

Employees have a very strong belief that they should be rewarded on the basis of merit and that these rewards should be distributed fairly. The impact when pay is not distributed on the basis of merit is a lack of commitment to the organization, decreased levels of effort, and perhaps the loss of valuable employees. It most often is high-achieving employees rather than low-achieving employees who become dissatisfied and look for jobs elsewhere

Pay-for-performance systems or incentive plans may be designed to reward individuals, teams, units or entire organizations. These systems may be known by various names, such as merit pay, bonus, lump-sum pay, awards (gifts), team-based rewards, gain sharing, profit-sharing, stock options, etc. To attract, retain, and motivate high performers and to be fair to all employees, an organization needs to reward employees on the basis of their relative performance.

General Electric involves its employees in decision processes. The management perspective is “that those closest to the work know it best”. “Views and ideas of every employee, from every function, in every business, are solicited and turned into action.” (http//www.gejfwtc.com/careers/work_culture.html) Besides encouraging the free-flow of ideas, they also implement a vigorous education and recognition program. Crotonville, Americas first Corporate University, and various other training and professional development programs for all employment levels are prime examples of this belief.

Ford is the only auto company in Fortune magazines 50 Best Companies for Minorities. Much time, effort, and money can be poured into training. Their plants training program includes mandatory and optional classes in global economics, production control, standard operating procedures, and engine construction and operation. They know “if a worker isnt interested in doing good work--or has a bad attitude toward the company--then he or she likely wont perform well”. “That has a profound, pervasive effect on product quality.” (Quinlan) The “Wall of Fame” provides a lasting example of recognition for its employees. When a person receives the award, it goes to a permanent display. Amy Nikolic of Ford reported, We looked at a lot of information concerning what they want most from their jobs. By a large margin, we found that employees prefer recognition over rewards. So thats the form of reinforcement we give for good performance. Ford Motor Company has instituted many quality controls to help productivity. This includes employee empowerment, training, motivation, and communications. Ford had developed a process certifying suppliers, where its engineers and technicians visit the supplier shops to help guide them as the suppliers perform failure-mode analysis. “As a result of this program, we’ve been able to eliminate incoming inspection at CEP. We now can identify and correct all problems at the source,” said Bohen. “We conduct weekly meetings of all work teams, plus quarterly assembly meetings, just to hash things over, says Chris Bolen. Frank, honest suggestions are encouraged. If a worker spots a current or impending problem on a line, he or she can stop that line without fear of penalty”. (Quinlan http//www.manufacturingcenter.com/qm/archives/017/17fordengine.html)

Regardless of which method companies seek to motivate its employees, all recognize the value of a motivated employee on increased morale, productivity, and cost reduction. In the end, “acceptance by employees is the ultimate determinant of a plans success. The more employees are involved and the more that it addresses their individual needs, the greater their commitment to the plan will be.” (Finigan)

XI. Conclusion

Motivation exists within all people. An important difference exists between people who motivate themselves and people being controlled or influenced by external events. Managers can influence certain aspects of the external environment. Motivation can be influenced. Not all employees will respond the same. Therefore managers can never become satisfied by thinking that one new program or decision will be effective for all. Instead they should reach out to understand the needs of their employees in order to sustain an industrious work force.

Nowra, in Cosi has written about a transformation, he illustrates a time when ordinary people did not understand mentally-ill patients well. Throughout this drama, Lewis¡¦ (the protagonist) concepts and perceptions of love, politics and mental illness experience a change in direction. These changes are the results of his interaction and in time, understanding of the mentally-ill patients around him. These characters, patients, help reveal the true character of Lewis.

Nowra writes of a transformation where concepts and views on love and fidelity change in direction through various catalysts. At the beginning, Lewis is unsure of what his opinion on love is, he claims that ¡§love is not so important nowadays¡¨. Lewis claimed that ¡§love was a hard concept to define¡¨, he had not yet developed his own views but had been manipulated by his friends, Nick and Lucy, who both believe that love is not important. Throughout the play, Lewis interacts with the patients who each hold contrasting views towards love. Through their interactions and conversations, it can be seen that Lewis believes in fidelity, not unlike Cherry, but in contrast to Julie who believes love to be another form of drugs. Also through these interactions, Lewis¡¦ strong opinion that true love and fidelity should exist in relationships form. It can be seen when he said that the play is ¡§about important things ¡V like love and fidelity.¡¨ Even after Lewis was betrayed by his girlfriend; Lucy, he was persistent in his belief that women should be faithful to men and that true love does exist.

Cosi explores a situation where concepts and perceptions on politics are changed and shaped due to various factors. At first, Lewis is shown to the audience as an unsure and weak character with a low level of self-confidence; as the director, he did not put himself in control but instead straightaway handballs the power to Roy when manipulated by him. Close to the beginning of the drama, Lewis had no opinion on politics; he turned off the radio as soon as he heard an opinion expressed on the Vietnam War. Later on, as the play develops, Lewis is able to express his own views without hesitation. By being around people with simple views, Lewis has been pushed to change; he is no longer scared of what other people will think. Towards the end of the play, when asked to attend the moratorium instead of the play, Lewis was able to say that the play comes ¡§first¡¨.

Views on mental illness and the mentally ill are renewed and changed as the plot of Cosi developed. Lewis started as a character that was unsure of how to deal with the patients, but after spending time with them and understanding them, he was able to cope with them and form friendships with many. One example of an event where Lewis experienced change would be when they acted out the shock treatment. When Roy claimed that he acted by using method acting, Lewis immediately understood the hardships Roy had suffered in his life. After the interactions that occur in the drama between Lewis and the patients, Lewis understands the patients and sees that many people are ignorant to the topic of mental-illness.

live paper help

After examining Cosi closely, it can be concluded that the patients merely help Lewis to find his real character and do not change him through manipulation. Lewis¡¦ perceptions of politics, love and fidelity are formed as a result of his interactions with the patients. Lewis is able to affiliate himself and express his opinions rather than conforming to those around him.

Monetary Policy

The sub par performance of the U.S. economy extended into the first half of 00. Although accommodative macroeconomic policies and continued robust productivity growth helped to sustain aggregate demand, businesses remained cautious about spending and hiring. All told, real gross domestic product continued to rise in the first half of the year but less quickly than the economys productive capacity was increasing, and margins of slack in labor and product markets thereby widened further. As a result, underlying inflation remained low.

(Fed Reserve Board, 00)

In financial markets, longer-term interest rates fell, on net, over the first half of the year as the decline in inflation and the subdued performance of the economy led market participants to conclude that short-term interest rates would be lower than previously anticipated. These lower interest rates helped to sustain a rally in equity prices that had begun in mid-March. The Federal Reserve expects economic activity to strengthen later this year and in 004, in part because of the accommodative stance of monetary policy and the broad-based improvement in financial conditions.

livepaperhelp.com

In addition, fiscal policy is likely to be stimulative as the provisions of the Jobs and Growth Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 00 go into effect and as defense spending continues to ramp up. Severe budgetary pressures are causing state and local governments to cut spending and to increase taxes and fees, but these actions should offset only a portion of the impetus from the federal sector. Moreover, the continued favorable performance of productivity growth should lift household and business incomes and thereby encourage capital spending. Given the ongoing gains in productivity and the existing margin of resource slack, aggregate demand could grow at a solid pace for some time before generating upward pressure on inflation.

At the heart of the current debate over just how the Fed should communicate the goals, strategy and conduct of monetary policy lies the issue of what central bankers call transparency” How much should the Fed say and to what end? However, in the interim, the debate has grown still more heated and confusing.

In my view, transparency is important not just to be accountable; it is essential for monetary policy to succeed. Thats because transparency about goals anchors inflation expectations, and understanding how the Fed operates makes financial market participants the Feds ally rather than its adversary. In short, transparency builds credibility. Thus, Fed officials should clearly state their goals, their resolve to achieve them and whether or not policy is in equilibrium. To be sure, transparency has its limits To quote Fed Governor Edward Gramlich, policymakers, of course, need to discuss various policy options in confidence. Doing otherwise will not get the most competent policymakers to the table, and it will not promote frank and open discussions. (Fed Reserve Board, 00) But thats where the limits should end.

Give the Fed credit Over the past two decades, Fed officials have dramatically improved their public communication of the goals of monetary policy. And they have articulated in far more detail than before how policy should be formulated and conducted. In my view, clarity about both policy goals and framework and transparency about conduct has vastly improved the efficiency of policy. In an extremely important respect, the results have been wildly successful Inflation and inflation expectations have been low and stable for a few years now, as the Feds commitment to price stability and getting market participants to share that goal have made it a reality.

For market participants, the process has been transforming. Only a decade ago, Fed watchers decoded signals from the Open Market Desk, and sometimes misread them. Today, the Fed is more inclined to let Fed watchers in on the conversation. Officials regularly and freely communicate their views about the economy and policy, so all market participants can weigh the risks surrounding policy choices on an ongoing basis. Announcing policy changes, the rationale for them, and how Members voted immediately following each meeting has helped all market participants understand policy intent. (Fed Reserve Board, 00)

How should the Fed change its communiqus to improve transparency? In my view, the Fed should spell out its goals so that we all know what range of inflation (or price level over time) constitutes price stability. Likewise, committing to an inflation goal will help eliminate confusion about how the Fed will react to unacceptably low inflation. And finally, stating a policy bias one way or another will reinforce understanding of where the Fed is going. Following these three precepts in my view will improve the Feds chance of success.

Im not alone in that judgment. Inflation-targeting central banks such as the Bank of Canada (BoC) argue that One of the most important benefits of a clear inflation target is its role in focusing expectations of future inflation.... it has helped to make the Banks monetary policy actions more readily understandable to financial markets and the public. (BoC, 00) But the Fed need not target inflation explicitly to reap the benefits of transparency about goals. For example, Fed Governor Ben Bernanke has merely specified what he thinks is an acceptable range for inflation (1% to % measured by the core chain-type price index for personal consumption) in order to clarify why the Fed today wont respond to above-trend growth as in the past. (Fed Reserve Board, 00)

Policymakers generally agree that monetary policy operates by shaping expectations in financial markets and in the economy at large. Clarity about goals is the most critical ingredient in that process. But more straightforward disclosure would also help anchor expectations and get markets to help the Fed.

Did the Enlightenment’s ideas cause the Revolution in France?

One of the most important events in history was the French Revolution in 178-175. France was considered the most powerful state in Europe although the Revolution lead it to many changes. The changes were caused by the influence of the ideas of the Enlightenment.

The Enlightenment ideas that influenced the French Revolution were the philosophy and scientific stage. The emergence of the Enlightenment came in 1750, after the death of Louis XVI and the publication of Newton’s Principia

(www.mrdowling.com/705french.html). Many Enlightenment scientists including Pierre Bayle (1647-1706) despised Louis XIV absolute monarchy and was skeptical about the claims of organized religion (McKay, Hill, Buckler, 1, p. 606). While all of the new thinkers proposed a new outlook on life, it was a group of intellectuals called the philosophers that was the most influential. The economic and political ideas espoused by the philosophers were put into actions near the end of the eighteenth century; the French Revolution. After the American Revolution in 1775 the Philosophers brought the knowledge to “their ignorant fellow creatures in an Age of Enlightenment (McKay, Hill, Buckler, 1, p. 607).

A philosopher named Baron de Montesquieu that brought the Enlightenment thinking past philosophical meanings (McKay, Hill, Buckler, 1, p.607). Considered on of the greatest philosophers, Montesquieu was inspired by the critical method applied to physical science so he decided to apply them to the problem of government. The government at the time was royal absolutism, as it had been since Louis XIV in 175. In his book, The Spirit of Laws (1748), Montesquieu showed “that forms of government were shaped by history, geography, and customs” (McKay, Hill, Buckler, 1, p.607) and tried to prevent tyranny by promoting liberty. Montesquieu admired the English balance of power and thought that France’s 1 high courts, the parliaments, worked just a swell to prevent royal despotism. From Montesquieu theory’s, both the constitution of the United States and France would be greatly influenced (McKay, Hill, Buckler, 1, p.608).

After Montesquieu and the other Enlightenment thinkers such as Bernard de Fontenelle and Francois Marie Arouet, known as Voltaire, began publishing their thoughts and theories the general public couldn’t help but take notice. By 1780, the number of new titles grew form 600 in 1700, to 600 (McKay, Hill, Buckler, 1, p.611). Now it was not just the “privileged groups that brought books, but the general public as well. It was also know longer religious books that held the market, but books about arts and sciences. This “reading revolution” inspired a critical world-view (McKay, Hill, Buckler, 1, p.61).

The new “educated public” began to desired and consider public change. It was the American Revolution that motivated Enlightenment thinkers to educate “the monarch, who could then make good laws and promote human happiness”, thereby achieving political change. Many absolutist’s rulers did try “govern in an enlightenment manner” (McKay, Hill, Buckler, 1, p.614).

While there are other factors that contributed to the French Revolution, the ideas of the Enlightenment were the most important. Without the ideas expressed by the philosophers, the spirit and inspiration for political change would not have been possible. It was the ideas if the Enlightenment that sparked the people of France to find their own revolution.

Frito-Lay Tostistos In 1, Elmer Doolin, who was in the ice-cream business, bought a recipe for corn chips from a Mexican man who was eager to leave the states and return home.

From him Doolin acquired 1 accounts and old manufacturing equipment in hopes to start an entirely new industry in America. The first manufacturing plant for

Fritos Corn Chips started out in Doolin’s mother’s kitchen. With a lot of hard work, Elmer’s sales increased and new equipment and packaging were soon needed. After WW II he would grant H.W. Lay and Company, a source of potato chips and snack foods, an exclusive franchise to manufacture and distribute

Fritos Corn Chips. The two companies would work close together and in 161 they would merge. Four years later, Pepsi-Cola Company would also combine with

live paper help

Frito-Lay, but with separate operating divisions, to form a new company called

PepsiCo. Consumers in 15 spent an estimated $1. billion on Frito-Lay snacks, up $1.8 billion in 14. (PepsiCo. 15 Annual Report). Currently, Frito-Lay is still expanding its sales and serves all of the US markets. In 18 they reconstructed their business into 4 regional divisions to strengthen its channel distribution. Their growth has continued and as of 11 they had Sales and

Marketing areas in order to bring the decision process closer together.

Currently they are continuing to grow nationally and globally with distribution reaching nearly 400,000 in retail, vending, and food service accounts around the country (PepsiCo. 15 Annual Report) They offer more than 100 product lines and several brand names such as Lay’s, Ruffles, Doritos, Rold Gold, and Tostitos.

The overall market share for tortilla and corn chips in 1 accounted for 5.8% of retail sales and 7.8% of pound volume of the salted snacks market.

Frito-Lay’s market coverage involves intensive distribution by placing its products in convenience stores, mass merchandisers, supermarkets, grocery stores, and vending machines. Todays average for the companys distribution amongst grocery and supermarkets has risen to about 56% (PepsiCo.16 Facts).

Frito-Lay’s closest competition in size for snack foods is Nabisco, who doesnt have a snack chip to compete with Tostitos corn chip. Golden Flake Enterprises is Frito’s biggest competitor in size and markets served that has a tortilla chip, but they compete in an indirect way through limited product lines. Some companies that compete serving smaller markets are Philadelphia’s Utz, Herrs, and Bravo. They try to compete with Frito-Lay, but most of them have to add a degree of differentiation to gain a slight competitive advantage in a market that is to easy to copy. Companies selling in small local markets try to compete and differentiate through targeting their audiences more directly which is hard for Frito Lay to do. However smaller companies resources are limited, so it is hard to compete directly with the big distributor in markets served. Frito has also used the strategy of forward integration, which means they have used their earnings to gain ownership or control over distributors and retailers which makes it hard for small companies to gain distribution channels. Frito’s snack products are available in 40 countries and believes that the majority of its growth will come from establishing new markets. Frito-Lay owns most of their operations but some operations are joint ventures. The company works hard at keeping its market share and has brought in outside firms to look at their supply chain from manufacturing to distribution, to logistics and transportation planning. This past year the company won an award for its seasoning and packaging program. It works to get full truckloads by utilizing unique carrier management technology systems which are projected to save 0% in transportation costs, reduce inventory carrying costs, and enable deliveries twice a week to production facilities which is expected to decrease transportation time. They are also using what is called a back-haul program to fill empty miles in

Frito-Lays private fleet, generating over $50,000 in incremental revenue for its traffic centers. They have also spent big money on an integrated system which provides visibility and productivity tools to optimize Frito-Lays distribution network (www.markvii.com/news/frito.htm). Tostitos success is due to Frito Lay’s capabilities to capture opportunities to enhance a competitive advantage. Through decades of hard work and expansion, the company is moving forward expanding its markets. Their profits are high and theyve worked hard over the years to create and maintain relationships with its channel members which has led to their success.

The European Union (EU) and the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) belong to two different types of regional economic integration groupings. NAFTA is a Free Trade Area, an agreement that eradicates or diminishes custom duties and non-tariff barriers amongst two or more countries while each country conserves their internal tariff policies with nations that are not part of the FTA. EU is a political union which implies that besides of not having trade barriers among the member countries, there is a complete political and economic integration.

NAFTA and EU had become two of the most known groups in the world. The European union is nowadays the most powerful political union in the globe. One of the main social factors that allows an economic group to be successful is a shared identity. Canada and United States had the advantage of sharing a “North American” identity. Mexico is most well known as a Latin country and its people identify themselves more as “latins” than North Americans. However, Mexico large relationship with the US helped to lessen the non-identity shock. Another reason that helped Mexicans to do not reject the Trade Agreement because the lack of identity with its neighbours was the conception of United States as the “land of opportunities”.

The European Union did not have strong identity problems because most of its members share a historical background. The Second World War was an important factor for Europeans willingness to join in order to overcome the difficult war consequences.

Geographic closeness in both NAFTA and EU has been a key element in the success of both groups. As we know, proximity eases the functioning of a common market. The European Union has the great strength of having a modern and useful transportation network and as a consequence transportation costs have decreased in a 50%.

Life Without Love

Everyday parents face difficulties in raising their children. A person’s childhood can determine whether they succeed or fail in life. The movie Citizen Kane, written, directed, and starring Orson Welles demonstrates that children may never have the chance to learn what they need to know to become a successful adult in all areas of life. Charles Foster Kane received endless amounts of opportunities and wealth, but never learned how to love another person. Even though he had numerous assets, Charles Foster Kane suffered his entire life from lack of love.

It is true that a child raised in endless opportunities and wealth would experience all things materialistic in life however, a child raised with love and security may learn the value of love. Charles Foster Kane cared not about his employees, but rather if he profited off their work. His employees strived to do any request Charles Kane presented them with. Charles Kane purchased a newspaper, The Inquirer. He contended to make it the best newspaper, even going to the lengths of buying the staff of a rival newspaper, The Chronicle. In the movie, Charles Foster stated “The news goes on for 4 hours a day.” Charles Kane would force his employees to worklong hours and revise their work many times to meet his standards. Due to the lack of compassion Charles Kane received throughout his childhood, he could not show proper respect and care toward his employees.

Along with struggling with employee relationships, Kane also struggled in his two marriages. He first married the president’s niece, Emily Norton. By marrying her he gained popularity and political power. “Really Charles, people will think....” started Emily, “What I tell them to think!” interrupted Charles. Charles’ controlling ways allowed him to dominate their marriage. The marriage ended when Emily found that another woman, Susan Alexander, had entered Charles’ life. He later married his newly found love, Susan Alexander. Charles Kane showered Susan in gifts, yet he could not generate the most essential feeling of love. This happened because Charles Kane did not receive love in his childhood, therefore could not express his feelings of love.

livepaperhelp.com

Besides marriage, another important aspect of Charles Kane’s life involved friendship. One relationship included his best friend, Jedediah Leland. Jedediah Leland worked for Charles Kane as the drama critic for The Inquirer. When Jedediah wrote a truthful, but devastating review about his wife, Susan Alexander, Charles forced their friendship to come to an end. Leland states, “Hello, Charlie. I didn’t know we were talking,” and Charles replies, “Sure we’re speaking, Jedediah you’re fired.” After his friendship ended with Jedediah Leland, Charles Kane never acquired any more true friends.
