The State of the Nation

I. Government Ministries.

(a) National Insurance & Housing.

(b) Health.

(c) Bahamas Telecommunications Company.

(d) Broadcasting Corporation of the Bahamas.

II. Crime

(a) Possible causes.

(b) Judicial system.

III. The Economy

(a) Its profitability and stability.

(b) The Nation’s budget.

(c) E-Commerce.

(d) Financial Services and Investments.

Have we arrived? Have we banked the corner? The state of this nation seems to be experiencing a sea-saw effect when it comes to growth and profitability. Progression, digression what are we really experiencing? Are we being told the undiluted truth when it comes to the state of our nation? In laymen terms the people of the Bahamas need to be told what is really going on.

The state of the nation of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas has been under much scrutiny. Some say we are in a terrible state. Others say that we are making great strides in economic development.

This essay will pinpoint some major issues that are affecting our economy. It will seek to bring to light somewhat a personal view on the state of this nation with facts from different sources.

Government Ministries

Some government ministries are poorly managed and over staffed. The National Insurance Board is one such place. On top of being overstaffed, there are persons being overlooked for promotion because of lack of sufficient academic abilities. The Ministry of Housing, fulfilling its mandate on ensuring that affordable homes are made available to Bahamians, has embarked on a project to making it affordable for locals to own their own homes. Yet when certain low-income and single family applicants apply they are told they are not qualified? So how then can these homes be affordable?

The Ministry of Health has embarked on a number of initiatives to alleviate the shortage of nurses here in the Bahamas. Also, there is a shortage of properly qualified pharmacists within the government health sector. One of the reasons for this is there are persons ready and willing to sit the exam to be qualified but now have to wait until June 004, the date for which this exam will be set.

The Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC), a profitable company, now up for privatization. There is poor management in this company. Workers who have been hired as political favors entering the job and filling in positions that current qualified staff with the experience can fill.

Outdated systems have now caused a halt in cellular services. How can you not implement and plan for upgrades on a periodic basis in a department that has been the pacesetter for financial growth in the company. Now millions of dollars are spent to rectify this problem.

The Broadcasting Corporation of the Bahamas has been a burden on this country for sometime. The corporation has not been able to compete and make profit as the other media companies. Staff are poorly paid and morale at an all time low.

Crime

Crime in this country has grown at an all time high. There seem to be a lawless state amongst the youths and adults. A statement was made that our country’s crime problem seems to be escalating to that of first world countries. What is the government plans to eradicate this menacing situation?

We have heard talk on National Reform, but is this the solution. It is not until our citizens can realize the difference between protecting our criminal family members and obstructing justice; that we can begin to curtail this problem.

Harsher penalties need to be put in place for certain crimes and favoritism or leniency not given because of social status. If you do the crime you do the time.

Our police officers need to be given stricter mandates in the apprehension of criminals and tools for effective investigating. They ought to be made aware that every citizen of this country has a right to police protection when they feel that their freedom of existence in this country is being threatened.

The Economy

The economy of the Bahamas has changed since its independence in 17. Thirty years ago, the Bahamas’ Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was somewhere around $. billion approximately two-thirds of what it is today. Although the economy is still weak, it is showing some signs of recovery according to a recently released Central Bank quarterly report.

In the 00/004 Budget it noted that specific programs could contribute to the sustained growth of the economy. Such programs mentioned are the expansion and marketing of bone fishing lodges; upgrading of tourist sites; improved docks and airport facilities.

Early this year the Government released its Electronic Commerce Policy statement. This policy statement as reported could be regarded as an important step in economic development for this country.

The financial sector of this country is been given much attention, as it could be a turning point in economic profit and stability. Foreign and local investments have been highly welcomed as it brings exposure and economic growth for our nation.

Foreign investments can bring much help with respect to helping to reduce the national deficit and at the same time provide job opportunities for our people. These investments should not be limited to the construction sector but also tourism.

With the onset of the World Trade Organization (WTO), The Free Trade Area of the Americas and the Caricom Single Market Economy (CSME), the government has to now adjust its policies and ensure that the local business community inputs are heard and considered; so as to protect and guard their interest in this changing global market. In turn the business community needs to seek more ways to be more proactive and productive to be able to compete internationally.

In conclusion, this nation has much work ahead of us. I bring to light my second question at the beginning of this essay, have we banked the corner? It is quite too early to predict this, as there is a lot more to be done before we can say that we are ready to compete globally. We have maintained a steady growth but not to a degree where we can say the state of this nation have improved significantly over the years. Collective decision making; from the private and public sector; will now have to be made to ensure the long-term growth of our nation.

Mockery of McKinley

Mocking is contemptuous or ironic in manner or wit, an object of amusement, a specific act of ridicule or derision. Mockery is commonly associated with editorial cartoons, but what if the alleged is our nations president. Alfred Henry Lewis, the editor of “The Verdict Newspaper , creates a satirical but significant view of the 100 elections.

Lewis first grabs your attention with the clever, eye-popping caricature of Theodore Roosevelt. Assuming, the audience is aware of their popular Vice President in the 100’s. Lewis’ objective is to make incontestable that Roosevelt consumes the entire

cartoon. His goal is to set up mockery of William McKinley, which he has unquestionably done. The jest of McKinley is not noticed at first, by the reader’s eye until they look closer, to see a tiny man perched on the harness of the Vice President’s horse. Immediately you depict the difference in size and stature, and know that Lewis is trying to get the point across of an overpowerment in government. But wait there is more…………….. the final and most crucial detail of this cartoon is the tiny flag that McKinley is holding, which reads FOR PRESIDENT. The reader has now put the entire cartoon together, and the editorial is fully understood. The mockery is obviously, that the Vice President Roosevelt has more power and influence than President McKinley.

Although, you do not have to be a political animal to understand the message that Lewis was trying to get across, you might not understand the significance of the cartoon unless you know the history behind it all.

McKinley skillfully manipulated both the public and politicians. Yet, his domestic program and achievements were overwhelmed by foreign policy, which Roosevelt excelled in, and came to dominate his administration. Ever a proponent for a healthy economy, he supported creating new foreign markets for United States products. Roosevelt’s well advertised exploits in the Spanish American war propelled his political career. After being elected governor of New York in 188, he received the republican nomination for Vice President in 100 and often seemed to overshadow President McKinley.

Roosevelt’s determination and McKinley’s lack of leadership caused Americans to put more faith into their Vice President, instead of their president elect. Lewis depicts a humorous, yet critical cartoon to the readers of the 100’s. Analyzing the cartoon today, still has an impact on Americans, reminding us that the freedom of speech and press, still stands as it did over 100 years ago.

Mysteries of the Ancient World For many centuries people have been fascinated by ancient cultures and treasures. During the last two centuries the science of archeology and modern inventions allowed people to get inside of the Egyptian and Mayan pyramids and discover the treasures of Egyptian pharaohs and Mayan rulers. Most of what we know about Egypt we owe to the pyramids. Thanks to Egyptian belief in the afterlife we can now find out about the civilization that existed nearly five thousand years ago. Egyptian culture is not the only culture that left us its heritage in pyramids. In America we find pyramids build by civilizations of Olmec and Maya about 7th century CE. These pyramids had different purposes and usage then the ones in Egypt but they stand as memorials to ancient civilizations as well. Egyptian people believed in life after death. One of the way pharaohs prepared themselves for the afterlife journey was by building a pyramid and putting there all their belongings and riches.

Egyptian people believed that pharaoh is the closest person to the God and treated him accordingly. That is the reason for Egyptian tombs being full with the golden jewelry, precious stones and art objects. Most of the time art objects were not considered a treasury but they played their particular role in religious rituals. Jars were holding food and drinks for pharaoh’s journey, so he would not get hungry and would have food and drinks to offer to the Gods. The figurative sculptures were suppose to accompany Ka ( spiritual entity) in its lonely stay or serve as a twin for the mummy. If something happens to the mummy the ka could use the sculpture of the pharaoh for the revelation. As well as for Egyptians religion was an everyday concern for many of the Maya, whether the dynastic ruler, the zealous priest, or the humble believer. Maya has an extensive religion structure which we can not know in details. Chac and Itzamna are the most famous gods of Mayan culture. Hunahpu and Xbalanque are among the most interesting mythical characters. One of the most crucial gods was Tlaloc, who was worshiped in various guises by the culture of Teotihuacan, the Toltec of Tula, and later Aztecs. The Maya received the cult of Tlaloc during the 4th century more or less. The Cauac Monster, also known as the Witz monster, is a dominant supernatural concept in Maya religion, as are caves, cenotes, and other holy places (Maya Civilization pars. 6). The Maya built shrines, temples, and pyramids in honor of their gods, as well as to their kings, who ruled by all-encompassing concept of Divine power. Most of Mayan pyramids are temples to the gods, not the burial tombs as in Egypt. Even though Maya sometimes buried there their rulers they always put the temple on the top of the pyramid. Egyptians had temples near the pyramid or right next to it for the ceremonial services, but it never was placed on top of the structure. Also buildings in both cultures have a lot in common in their visual characteristics they are different structures. Egyptian pyramids originally had smooth equal sides meeting on the top in the perfect apex. Mayan pyramids look like one huge stairway towards the sky. It reminds of earliest Egyptian structures-mastabas, where one layer of stones was put onto another creating the effect of pyramid. Also The Tikal Temple on Great Plaza was originally plastered white. Then the roof comb was painted with reds, blues, and other colors to accent the different areas of sculptural decoration. These roof combs were like giant billboards, with immense portrayals of the enthroned king, larger then life size (Cities pars.). Egyptians never colored their religious structures. As well as in Egyptian pyramids, the stone used to construct Mayan pyramids is local limestone, obtained from nearby quarries. The ancient Maya had no stone tools but limestone is soft enough that the Maya could utilize chert tools to work the stone in to neat rectangular building blocks. Egyptian pyramids served as huge tombs and they were constructed in such a way so they would stand for thousand years. Egyptians did not know when the spirit would return into the dead body. Pyramids were constructed of rough stone blocks laid in horizontal rows, in a polygonal shape, with triangular sides rising to meet in the apex. Some were originally as high as 750 feet. The pyramids were built by taking blocks of granite to the workshops, measuring the blocks down the size, shaping the block and placing it into the body of the pyramid. Then on top of the built structure workers put the limestone going from the top to bottom. Egyptians left two empty rooms to place the pharaoh’s mummy and his belongings in. They sealed pyramids so well that it took four hundred years for robbers to get in. It is believed that the pyramids would be standing intact today if it were not for later destruction by robbers and invaders and for use as a building material. As it is, the massive stone buildings are rising right now outside of Cairo. The interiors of these huge stone structures contain a series of a narrow passages, ending in several large chambers. The central chamber was the burial room, always reached by a passage from the north, and containing a false stone door on the west side, representing an exit for the deceased soul. The roofs of these chambers were formed of layers of stone beams, lying on top of another, each layer weighing more then 0 tons. The passages into burial chamber was often hewn out of the rock directly from the outer edge. As well as Egyptian pharaoh Mayan rulers like Giant Jaguar was buried in his tomb with hundreds of offerings-vases, jade, jewels and so on. Mayan temple-pyramids usually contained one or more rooms, however, the rooms were so narrow that they could only have been used on ceremonial occasions and were not meant for public consumption. Most of the Egyptian pyramids were built by six pharaohs of the Old Kingdom, and were considered sacred shrines. On the contrary to general beliefs pyramids were built by free citizens, drafted to public work, not by slaves. Thousand experts worked on the design of pyramids all year round. An extra work group about ninety-five thousand men worked on the construction site during the four month period of the inundation ( the time of enforced idleness for farmers, since the fields were covered with the water of Nile) (Payne 4). The most famous Egyptian pyramids are the three pyramids five miles southwest of Giza, which is three miles southwest of Cairo. The largest pyramid, 481 feet high and 786 feet along east side of base, was built for Khufu, who reigned between 00 and 877 B.C. The pyramid of Khafre, who reigned about 85 B.C. is slightly smaller, but it is on a higher ground so that the apex is higher. The smallest pyramid (yet not small at all) was built by Menkure about 800 B.C. (Casson 5). One of the most famous sites of Mayan culture is Tikal in Guatemala. Numerous buildings stayed almost intact at the Great Plaza the Temple of the Giant Jaguar (700 A.D.), the Temple of the Masks (6 A.D), and the North Acropolis. At the heart of the Temple of the Giant jaguar is the tomb of high priest. The sanctuary for worship at the top of the structure sits on a nine-tiered pyramid. In each cultures each pyramid was built for the body of only one man. Usually, caskets full of jewels, furniture in laid with ivory and gold, silver and alabaster bowls and vessels, chests filled with clothing and precious ornaments, jars filled with food and wine were put in the room next to the room with the mummy. Among the objects found in the Egyptian pyramids were the shabtis. Shabtis are small statues in the form of nude humans, often wrapped in linen and placed in model coffins. They were inscribed with a prayer for food offerings, although they probably also functioned as alternative abode for the ka. By the Middle Kingdom (05 B.C) the figures had become mummiform in shape, and their inscriptions clearly join the deceased with Osiris, the god of the underworld, who rose to prominence during this period. By late Dynasty XII (1850 B.C.) The statuettes’ original function as residence for the ka has expanded greatly. Although the original identification with the tomb owner was never lost, the figures were seen primarily as workers who performed a service for the deceased, and they became known by the ancient Egyptians as shabits. Rapidly shabit-figures came to represent the deceased’s servants in the afterlife and were so popular that they replaced the model servant statues previously deposited in upper-class graves of the Old and Middle Kingdoms (Life sect.1). One of the most important traditions in the Egyptian culture was the mummification of the dead body. According to Egyptian religion the body had to be intact in order for Ka to return. Mummification of the dead body was a complicated and long process. The famous Greek historian Herodotus reported on the Egyptian practice of mummification They take first a crooked piece of iron, and with it draw out brain through the nostrils, thus getting rid of a portion, while the skull is cleared of the rest by rinsing with drugs; next they make a cut along the flank with a sharp Ethiopian stone, and take out the whole contents of the abdomen, which they then cleanse, washing it throughly with palm wine, and again frequently with an infusion of pounded aromatics. After this they fill the cavity with the purest bruised myrrh, with cassia, and every other sort of spicery except frankincense, and sew up the opening. (Herodotus sect.1) After these procedures were done the body was placed in natrum for saventy days. They put the body into the wooden coffin which was shaped into the man figure. Sometimes the wooden coffin was placed into the golden one decorated by precious stones and paint. In Mayan culture we find no evidences that any techniques of mummification were used. In the humid climate of Central America it is very hard to preserve a dead body for such a long time that is needed for the mummification process. As we can see Mayan and Egyptian cultures have a lot in common. However, some major differences can be found. Mayan religion was not obsessed with an afterlife beliefs as Egyptians were. Their pyramids were built either for Gods or as a memorial to the dead ruler or priest. Egyptians built their pyramids for the dead. Their buildings were meant to be used in the other life by the great spirits buried in them. Some visual differences also occur. Most of the Mayan pyramids are shorter then the ones at Giza site. They are not sealed forever but has an access for the priests and authorized people. The major difference is that Maya put the shrine right on top of the pyramid. The stairs led from the ground to the top of the pyramid. This way people thought they would be closer to God. In Egypt only pharaoh was considered to be closer to God therefore an enormous buildings reaching the sky was meant to be the stairway to the heaven only for the pharaoh. Nowadays these both ancient cultures still hold many mysteries for us. Most of the things we know are based on the speculations of the scientists, not on the certain facts. Archeologists working on discovering more and more about the ancient civilizations that existed thousand years ago but appeared much more advanced then we used to think about it. However, many of the documents, scripts and art evidences disappeared during such a long time. Robbers, invaders and weather were the reason for the huge loss of historical items that were kept in ancient Maya cities and along the Nile. I am sure that in the future many of the mysteries will be unfolded, but as for now, ancient people keep fascinate us with their enigmas.

Loner more like Loser

Leisure is a thing in which I think is very important in day to day life and is something which should be practised by all as it gives people a sense of freedom and more importantly 0 minutes to themselves. After all this has been said and done computer games are creating a dumbed-down generation of children far more disposed to violence than their parents. The tendency to lose control is not due to children absorbing the aggression involved in the computer game itself, but rather to the damage done by stunting the developing mind.

I reviewed a game before I passed this serious judgement called the loner .I dont know what possessed me to buy this but there you go... The Loner is the story of a young fellow whose Dad gets murdered by a mysterious man in a dressing gown, and this young fellows quest for vengance on said nightwear clad nasty.

Help with essay on game review

Its quite good, but not as perfect as anyone would have you believe. Youre a bloke trying to avenge your fathers death right, so might you just buy a gun and threaten people until you find your way to the relevant gang and shoot them? No, you spend the first (virtual) days asking people if they saw that black car that the baddie and his pals drove. The gameplay largely revolves around finding something out, asking people about what it means, finding out what it means, and then asking the same people about what that meaning means until you find the right one who can tell you.

If you havent picked up the vibe by now, my usually charitable reviews stop here. I dont like this. It is a substandard add-on for an over-rated game. I always felt Unreal was an apt title because it is Its unrealistic and unconvincing. Its Unreal that so many people think its so good. Its Unreal that people rave over it

The dubbing is shit. So much has been made of the attention to detail in the game, and indeed this must have been a monumental labour of love for its creators. Why then, are we not given the option of hearing the games original dialogue, which was also presumably delivered by some decent actors, as opposed to the drunken twits that are used on this attrocious dub? No doubt one of the original developers spent hours, days, weeks on lipsync only to have it stepped on by the virtual graphic designers, who obviously take their target audience for fools. The credibility of the final product is seriously marred by a hasty adaptation.

I conclude this review. I could sit and pick more holes but I aint gonna. Mostly this sucks. Enough said Buy this game, it is very good, but not as good as all that. Okay, sorry?

I predict that that 1 solid limestone weighing g will take longer to dissolve than powdered limestone weighing g. I predict this because the more surface area there is exposed to the hydrochloric acid the faster reaction will take place, therefore it will dissolve quicker.

Apparatus

Glass beaker

Cork

Hydrochloric acid

Calcium Carbonate

Glass bowl

Stopwatch

Method

1) Collect 1 solid piece, solid pieces, solid pieces and powdered limestone all weighing g each.

) Place 50 ml of m hydrochloric acid in a beaker and add the 1 solid piece of limestone.

) Put the cork in top of the beaker and start the stopwatch.

4) Time how long it takes for the limestone to stop bubbling and put the results in your table.

5) Repeat this with two pieces of limestone, three pieces and powdered limestone.

Fair test

To make sure that this experiment is a fair test consider the following· Make sure there is the same amount of Hydrochloric acid, this could affect the rate of reaction.

· Make sure there is the limestone’s weigh the same, if the weight is not the same the reaction time won’t be accurateKey Factor

The key factor in my experiment is the form of the limestone ranging from 1 solid piece to powder both weighing g.

Results

Conclusion

The results show that my prediction was correct and it took longer for one solid piece of limestone to dissolve than the powdered limestone. I also noticed that it took less time for the two solid pieces and an even shorter period for the three solid pieces to disolve.

Evaluation

By looking at my graph I can see that my results are very accurate. I think that the equipment used and the way the experiment was conducted contributed to these results. If I were to redo this experiment I would change the weights of the limestone.

On June 1st, 10 a 7.7 earthquake rolled through northwestern Iran. The worst earthquake to strike Iran in 1 years shook cities at 10 A.M. The earthquake killed an estimated 50,000 people, injuring 00,000, and leaving 500,000 homeless. Tehran lies on a strike-slip fault. The Eurasian plate is pushing into the Arabian plate...causing a strike-slip fault. This eventually leads to many cracks in the Eurasian plate.

Fault Lines

Iran lies in an earthquake belt extending from Turkey through the Caucasus Mountains and farther east into the Himalayas. The belt is stradeling the area where the Arabian tectonic plate is pushing gradually northeastward, at a rate of five inches per year. As the plates move in this direction, it continually collides with the larger Eurasian plate and energy is transferred from the collision to fault lines running through it. These fault lines run through Northwestern Iran

EXTENDED TXET

Discuss two ways in which a text you have studied effectively presented its ideas.

In the text ‘Romeo and Juliet’ written by William Shakespeare, two ways he has used to effectively present his ideas are through the characters and setting. The characters Romeo and Juliet clearly illustrate the theme of romantic love through their actions and speech towards one another. The hot Italian city setting of Verona establishes the idea of hatred. The hot setting results in conflict, violence and death.

The play focuses on the romantic love, specifically the intense passion that springs up at first sight between Romeo and Juliet. In ‘Romeo and Juliet’, love is a violent, ecstatic, overpowering force that supersedes all other values, loyalties and emotions. The young lovers are driven to defy their entire social world. In the case of families, Juliet says, “Deny thy father and refuse thy name”, “Or if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love/ And I’ll no longer be a Capulet”. This quote shows that Juliet is willing to drop her family name for love. Romeo and Juliet portray the chaos and passion of being in love, as they are willing to end their lives due to the fact that they cannot be with one another. In act three, scene three Romeo brandishes a knife in Friar Laurence’s cell and threatens to kill himself after being banished from Verona and his love; Juliet also pulls out a knife in order to take her own life in the presence of Friar Laurence just three scenes later; after Capulet decides that Juliet will marry Paris, Juliet says that she now has the power to kill herself. Shakespeare has shown the theme of love through the actions and dialogue of Romeo and Juliet.

Shakespeare effectively presents the idea of hatred through the setting of the play. The play is set in the hot summer months of Verona, Italy. Verona is the home of the Capulet and Montague families. The “ancient grudge” between the two families steams up when the Capulet and Montague families collide and the sun is at its highest. In act three, scene three Tybalt mortally wounds Mercutio. Seeking revenge, Romeo attacks and kills Tybalt. Shakespeare has used the hot Italian setting of Verona because it enabled readers to set each scene in their minds, particularly scenes of conflict and portrays the idea of hatred boiling over between the two families. The hot Verona sun reflects the hot blooded and violent nature of the young men in the play.

Shakespeare has used many ways to convey his ideas in the play of ‘Romeo and Juliet’. Two ways that effectively portray the ideas of the play are through the main characters, Romeo and Juliet and the setting. Love is depicted carefully through the actions and speech of Romeo and Juliet towards one another. The idea of hatred is cleverly portrayed through the hot Italian city setting of Verona, which illustrates the themes of conflict, violence and death in the play. Romeo and Juliet is by far the most famous love story in the world, Shakespeare helps us to understand the play by effectively presenting his ideas of love and hatred through the characters of Romeo and Juliet and the hot city setting of Verona, Italy.

æ Directly - lending funds to actual users of funds e.g. companies obtaining funds directly from a syndicate of lenders. In direct finance, financial institutions often provide financial services to the borrowers and lenders, such as, financial advice and broking services.

æ Indirectly ¡V investors lend to financial institutions that in turn pool these funds to lend to various borrowers. The ultimate borrower and lender have no legal relationship or claim on each other, but each has a separate legal relationship with the financial intermediary involved.

What is meant by the term ¡¥Financial intermediary¡¦?

Financial intermediaries basically are the ¡¥middlemen¡¦ in the financial sector. They provide the link between those with money and those who need money. The funds are pooled and lent to borrowers with many different needs. For providing this service and assuming a number of risks, the intermediaries charge a fee.

. Briefly describe seven (7) different non-bank financial intermediaries?

1. Finance companies - Offer hire purchase and instalment credit usually for motor vehicles, construction and large household appliances. Because of direct competition from other financial intermediaries, finance companies have tended to operate at the high-risk end of the market. Most finance companies are owned by the four major banks e.g. AGC, Esanda, CBFC, Custom Credit.

. Credit Unions - They make up a small part of the financial picture in Australia. They are community based and provide loans to their members. Credit Unions are often work based offering facilities such as

„X Consumer finance

„X Housing loans

„X Small Commercial Loans

„X Investment and retirement advice

„X Insurance and travel facilities

. Building Societies ¡V The main function is to mobilise funds for housing but since deregulation, with increased competition they have been forced to increase their range of services. Building Societies are very similar to Credit Unions.

4. Life insurance offices and superannuation funds ¡V They receive money from insurance premiums, superannuation contributions and general insurance. They lend and invest these proceeds in the capital markets.

5. Friendly Societies ¡V These are small non-profit intermediaries pooling the funds of small investors to earn higher returns, usually in capital-guaranteed securities to ensure the security of the fund.

6. Unit Trusts ¡V Enables small investors to pool funds to take advantage of larger, higher interest bearing markets. Types include

„X Cash Management Trusts-invest in STMM

„X Property Trusts-invest in real estate

„X Equity Trusts-invest in shares

7. Managed Funds ¡V Similar to Unit Trusts. Funds are investments where individual investors funds are pooled with those of other investors. Investment professionals manage these funds.

4. You are the Chief Financial Advisor of a small company that is in need of short term finance. Outline the various sources of finance that you would recommend as being the appropriate for your company.

For short term finance there are several various sources available for a small company that I would recommend, outlined below is a list with both advantages and disadvantages

TRADE CREDIT

„X Relatively easy to obtain

„X Flexible ¡V fluctuates with the acquisition of stock

„X Short term finance for short time need

„X No costs ¡V If paid on time and supplier doesn¡¦t pass on.

„X If defer payment beyond credit terms (stretching) could damage credit reputation

„X Large cost in not accepting early settlement discount (and large cost in offering it!)

BANK OVERDRAFT

„X Allows the use of funds discretely

„X Low cost on overdraft amount as there is no limit

„X Service fees applicable

„X Can be called up by bank manager

FULLY DRAWN ADVANCE

„X Similar to overdraft of bank loan

„X Fully drawn on approval

„X Repayments include interest

„X Often 1 months, hence can be Long Term finance as well

There are of course many other sources of short term finance but the two listed above would be the only two I would recommend to a small company. Other sources of short term finance are listed below

„X Commercial Bills (bills of exchange)

„X Promissory Notes

„X Inter Company Loans

„X Hire Purchase

„X Leasing

„X Sale and Leaseback

„X Factoring of Book debts

The Role of Legislation in

the Financial Services Industry

„X Promotion of efficiency

„X Protection of individual investors

„X Depositors / investors can have confidence

. Briefly describe the four- (4) main regulators of Australian Financial Institutions.

The legislation is regulated or enforced by 4 major regulators.

1. Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC)

ASIC administers the Corporations Law. Has comprehensive powers to ensure the finance markets act with integrity and that consumers are protected.

‘Cat, Dog’

I was 7 years old, when I started 1st grade in Woodman Park School. It was a big school with a lot of kids. Like anybody who’s going into a new school would be nervous and scared, and want their parents next to them. Well I just was like them, clinging onto my mother’s arm as I walked down the hallway into my 1st grade classroom.

There were kids in there sitting at little desks. At one end of the room there is a piano where my teacher, Ms. Bistanding, play little kiddie songs and we would sing with her. My mom explained something to my teacher and she smiled at me, gesturing with her hand she pointed to an empty desk. I walked to it, my feet dragging behind me, and I sat down. A kid in front of me turned around and said something, but I couldn’t understand what she said. She keeps repeating that strange sound, but I don’t understand what she is saying. Finally, seeming like she’s giving up on me she turned around and started talking to some other kids. The teacher got up in front of the room and started speaking, even though I couldn’t understand what she was saying I heard my name several times, “Melissa” in her speech.

A voice came on over the loud speaker and we stood up put our hand over our heart and chanted something to the American flag. I tried my best by mimicking the sounds they were making, and doing the same thing that everybody was doing. When that was finished we sat in our little desks and she started to call out names. When that was over I was sent to another room.

I stepped into a small classroom. There were kids in there, but not much. I was seated at a circular table with another kid. A teacher sat down in front of us and she started talking. I just sat there and smiled why she kept talking. She kept on talking, and then she brought out a big card with a picture on it. It was a picture of a cat, but there was something underneath the picture. The teacher pointed at the something under the picture and said something slowly. “Cat,” she said, “cat,” I would say. She smiled and pulled out another card. “Dog,” she would say, “dog,” I would say back. We would do this every afternoon with new cards. When that class was over I would go back to my own classroom.

When I am in class with my normal classmates, we usually learn simple mathematics, review on the alphabet, and sing songs while Ms. Bistanding plays on the piano. In the classrooms I had fun most of the time, but recess and lunchtime was a nightmare I was always alone. The first time I ever been on the playground I was by myself. Sitting at the lunch table, by myself, eating quickly so I wouldn’t have to say anything. I wished I never had to come to America, I really didn’t want to leave Japan but I had to because of the earthquake. I knew I would never be able to go back so I would bite my tongue and not say anything.

I started to understand what some of the words meant, but I still had some trouble. I would practice the English language when I get home, but it was very frustrating. Because I couldn’t speak any English I didn’t have many friends. I was all alone and that got me really depressed. My stress and depression just builds as I kept all of my feelings inside of me, never letting anybody know what I was thinking and how I felt. It just kept building until it gave me a rash that I had to have a special medication put on it to make it go away.

At the end of the year I knew how to start a conversation, but I still had a lot to learn. I passed 1st grade, but I always had the feeling that they shouldn’t promoted me to the next grade because I thought I wasn’t ready yet.

It took me years to learn English. Most of it I learned from being taught, but some of it was from watching television. I am happy that I made it this far; I could have given up anytime I wanted and just stayed home. But that would be the coward way, I faced my fears, my goal, my destiny, and I made it. I got to 8th grade with no knowledge of the language when I was little. That is a great accomplishment, but I never thought about that until when I was a bit older. Now I have another goal, another fear, and another destiny for myself. And I will not back down and hide away like a coward, I will stand up tall and face it like I did when I was younger.
