A hero, above all must have qualities in which he is admired for his brave deeds in which he performs to realize a goal. These brave deeds are ones in which give someone the ability to endure pain and danger. Jerome and Eugene, in Andrew Niccols’ Gattaca, both possess qualities in which make them a hero because they are prepared to endure pain and jeopardy to achieve their dream. Both ultimately give up their own life to achieve a dream. This for Jerome was his life ambition while for Eugene this dream wasn’t one he had had all his life it become one after certain circumstances. Eugene is a hero because he gave away his DNA and his own body materials, such as hair, blood and urine, to help Jerome achieve his life objective. Jerome throughout Gattaca did many things, like leaving his family and friends, which seem selfish and unjustified but are all part of the torture endured to become and hero while achieving a dream. Jerome is fundamentally the hero in Gattaca because he was prepared to face danger pain and heart ache to achieve his ultimate dream.

In Gattaca Eugene and Jerome both ultimately sacrifice their bodies to achieve something they couldn’t with other each other therefore making something of their lives which were both worthless in their current social hierarchy of their time. Changing into Jerome was a dangerous fete because it was illegal and we know it wasn’t accepted because Jerome and the broker met and organized the deal in dark lighting, but the broker was more in the dark as his job is illegal and dangerous. To become accepted in this world Eugene gave his DNA, blood, urine, and his name to Jerome which in tern threw away his own self to achieve what he had to do to survive in such a cruel world. This is a great sacrifice because throughout the movie we see close ups of these things which shows us how important such small material are within this society. We see Jerome sacrifice his body to achieve his dreams many times within Gattaca, especially when he is hanging upside down doing weights with a book which is all about space. We see how he is willing to give up his body for the chance he could achieve his dream and we know he is putting his body on the line for this dream when we see a close up of his space book once he had dropped it on the ground after collapsing. When he nearly collapses then and also after the running program within his training, we see he is willing to push he body beyond the limits so that he can achieve his dream. The pain endured when Jerome pushes he body to the limits and when Eugene gives away the things that are most important to people in this society shows that both are prepared to give up their body to make their dream realisable therefore making them heroes.

Jerome and Eugene both committed their souls into this project because it was so risky and dangerous but they both still considered and completed the deal. They are both hero’s because they endured the danger involved in doing something as illegal as it was. Jerome was treated horribly before he met Eugene because he was considered a “faith birth”, “a God child” or more commonly an “invalid” which is emphasized when he tests the urine in the machine and it flashes “NO” with a loud rejecting beeping sound when the urine is not accepted. Jerome never gave up even when things got really tough because he knew what he wanted and his soul wouldn’t let him sacrifice everything he had done already. He committed his soul to only see one thing in the future and he wouldn’t let anything get between him and his goal. His commitment to achieving is proven when he never gives up during the second race against his brother. Winning this commits his soul to his dream even more because he can see it really being achieved. We see that Eugene also commits his soul to the project because when Jerome gets worried he will be caught out its Eugene who convince him that everything is okay and not to worry, because “when they look at you all they see is me”. He is willing to give away his soul for someone else so that both of them don’t get persecuted and can continue the project. Also when he eventually commits suicide it shows how committed his soul is to helping Jerome achieve his dream. This proves that both are heroes as in the end all they live for is achieving their goal of getting into Gattaca.

When Jerome fooled Gattaca and eventually made it to Titan he became more of hero because it was said to be an impossible act. Jerome’s farther said him self that the only way he would be in a rocket would only be achievable “is if you were cleaning it”. This proves Jerome is more of a hero because no one ever once believed in him and he had to do it all him self. Before the second swimming race Anton says to Jerome “you know your going to lose” proving no one could believe that an “in-valid” could achieve anything that a “valid” could do. The “invalids” were treated terribly as we see Jerome as a child not being allowed to go to kinder or school and throughout the time before he became Jerome we often saw camera shots of him with bars in front of him showing that because he was this “invalid” person he could never go beyond the bars or achieve anything. Anton’s reaction to Jerome’s success reflects what the society they live in would be. Anton is shocked and still believes he is better as he wants another swimming race to prove it. He is shocked because an “in-valid” is not meant to be smart and for him to fool the smartest of man kind, is unbelievable but mainly Anton is jealous that is why he asks for another race. Jerome is a hero because “in-valids” would look up to him, like what Lamar’s son does, because he has faced danger and pain to get to where he has but most importantly achieved the impossible.
