Henry Hudson

Early Life- Henry Hudson was born in London, England in the early 1570’s. He died when his crew mutinied on his 4th voyage in June1611. By the time he was 0 he was an excellent navigator. His grandpa and the explorer John Davis influenced Hudson’s decision to become an explorer. Henry sailed and explored for England for two years, then worked for the Dutch for one year, then worked for England for one more year. The reason he went to work for the Dutch is, when he got fired he missed life at sea so much he decided to work for a different country.

Explorations- Henry went on four major voyages.

Voyage 1- The first voyage he went on was in 1607. A company named “Muscovy Company” hired him. He went on this voyage to find a shortcut to the East (India, China, and Japan) because they wanted a shorter route for trading for spices from the Orient. This was also called the Orient. For this voyage Hudson was given a ship called “Hopewell”. They left for this voyage on May 1st. Hudson tried to get to the Orient by the North Pole. They got as far as Greenland but then were blocked in by ice and had to turn around in August and go back to England. When he got back to England the only thing that stopped him from being fired was he had found a place with hundreds of whales, in the Spitsbergen Islands. These whales were then hunted by the English and used for many things, such as bone for corsets and wheel rims and whale oil for lamps.

Voyage - He set sail for his second voyage on April , 1608, also backed by the Muscovy Company. He again set out to find a new way to the Orient, this time hopefully by way of northern Russia. By June they had reached the Islands of Novaya Zemlya. Again they were trapped in with ice and had to go back. Hudson wanted to go on to North America, but his crew threatened to mutiny. Hudson gave in and sailed home, but lost respect as a captain. Since he did not find anything he lost his job.

Voyage - In January 160 Hudson signed a contract to work for the Dutch. On this voyage he was to explore the area around Novaya Zemlya to find a passage to the Orient. The ship that the Dutch gave Hudson was called “ Half Moon”. This ship “Half Moon” was smaller and lighter than the “Hopewell” so it made the journey much more difficult. On the 6th of April 160 the “Half Moon” set sail for Novaya Zemlya. There was one huge problem because Hudson’s contract said that half of the crew had to be Dutch. Henry could not speak Dutch so he had to get a Dutchman to pick the crew for him. When he was half way to Novaya Zemlya he changed coarse to go to North America because the Dutch did not like the cold. When they got there they sailed south found the Hudson River. When Hudson returned back to Holland King James of England arrested him for sailing with another country. Supporters of Hudson later asked King James to set him free and he released Hudson on the condition that he sailed for England.

Voyage 4- In 1610 Henry hired a new crew back in England and set off for North America in the “Discovery”. One the way to Hudson Bay they had to pass through a strait called Furious Overfall. This channel was 400 km long and had terrible tides. They got to a place that is now called Hudson Bay, where they explored many inlets that were all deadends. The “Discovery” became stuck in the ice at the southern tip of Hudson Bay in November. The crew had a terrible winter with little food and severe cold. In the spring when the ice melted, Hudson decided to continue exploring to try to find a route to the Orient. The crew was not happy with this decision. They wanted to go home to England. On June 4, 1611 some of the crew mutinied. They left Hudson, his son and other loyal crewmembers adrift in Hudson Bay in a small boat with no food or supplies. Hudson was never heard from again.

Other Interesting Adventures- I think that when Henry got mutinied would be a big adventure.

Other Facts- Hudson discovered Hudson Strait, Hudson River, and Hudson Bay. He had a wife and three sons. His wife’s name was Katherine, and his sons’ names were Richard, John, and Oliver. Richard was one of the members of his crew that got mutinied.
