In our post-modern society the world is full of hypocrisies. This is bequeathed through both ‘The Pardoners’ Tale’ and also through the cine entitled ‘A Simple Plan’. The main theme that is presented through out these two pieces is the impression that ‘Radix malorum est cupiitas’ (money is the root of all evil) and also that greed is the ‘death’ of us. This theory can be looked at from two contrasted perspectives, either metaphorically of literally.

‘A Simple Plan’ explores what make ostensibly moralistic people do corrupt things rather then presenting a sermon on the derangement of their own absurdity and their vices which is the technique used in ‘the Pardoners Plan’. The American dream becomes a pivotal point in the exploration of how the human psyche is driven, enraptured and seduced by what is an arguably ‘evil’ or at least paradoxical and negative circumstance. The American psyche has been culturally pinned to a dream that is embedded in the history of America redefining the rights of the individual to personal beatitude. Where Hank morally advises Lou and Jacob that’ you work it’ (referring to the American dream). The raison d ‘etre for the circumstances that eventually prevail upon ‘good people’ such as Hank and his wife clearly defined from the outset of the film. The complexities that arise from the ‘simple’ need to own or repossess the American dream to absolute greed. This is when the darker side of human nature is released and evolves from the main concept, which is throughout the older text ‘the pardoners tale’ Radix malorum est cupiitas’ or ‘money is the root of all evil’. The greed in American culture is epitomised as a microsim through the conflict in moral justifications of immoral activities over keeping the money.

Death in this story is one of a metaphorical and literal nature. The main character in the film hank states at the start of the film ‘ I didn’t realise I was happy’ this statement reflects the idea that his greed over took him and transposed him from an honourable citizen to an avaricious person. His life metaphorically ‘died’ at the findings of the money. He lost his world, as he knew it. At the beginning hank seemed to be the ‘moral’ on of the trio yet with the progression of the story he became the scheming one. His brother who seemed ‘simple’ and immoral along with his friend Lou became the one at the end to save his brother, hank, and become the moralistic brother. Yet Lou’s was killed through the want for more money and also to cover up horrendous crime they had to commit in order to conceal of knowledge of the money. By killing Lou Hank has shown that no matter who you are in our post-modern world, if you were presented with a human life or money, many would take the money.

Money in this film consumed the entire of the four characters. All their values, which they had once possessed and nurtured, went sour with the taste of riches. With the constant simple plan after simple plan the four principal characters where captured in their own web of lies. Their supposedly moralistic views disappeared with the discoveries of the money and greed set in.

Also in “The Pardoners Tale’ it presents the idea that in the church there was many hypocrisies. The pardoner’s occupation is a combination of nomadic preaching and selling promises of redemption. His sermon thesis is continually the corresponding “Radix malorum est cupiditas’

The pardoner openly admits that he preaches solely to acquire money, not to rectified sin. He argues that myriad sermons are the outcome of evil inventions and that he can get back anyone that has insulted him or his brethren. In this story he preaches about covetousness, and ironically that is the very vice which he is controlled by. When one looks at this they must ask themselves what type of value system do we live in. People today are consumed by their need for greed and gluttony they do not see nor care about the ravage they transact to people.

In the actual sermon he describes a group of young people who spend their time drinking and revelling, and indulging in forms of excess. This is produced in the film ‘A simple Plan’ as Lou and Jacob where rioters, who liked to drink and tell crude jokes. The Pardoner then goes on to tell how the rioters were informed that there was a slain that night and the victim was their friend. The group proceeds to look for the killer ‘Death’. They find an old man and he points to where death was yet instead found gold.in their end consumed by there own gluttony they all kill each other in order for one to be possessor of all the money. This is shown in ‘A Simple Plan’ as Hank kills both Lou and Jacob.

The pardoner’s tale is a moral story used by preaches to emphasis a point to their audience. This tale shows the disastrous affects of greed. The morals, which are also in ‘A simple Plan’, the temptation of greed sets in and human life is to second preference.

In both of these literatures the main theme is greed is the root of all evil or; ‘Radix malorum est’ cupiditas’ in both ‘The Pardoners Tale’ and ‘A Simple Plan’ the main theme is that human life is not worth a lot if there is a bigger prize. It only comes second. One must ask themselves is this the moralistic choice of today?
