The certainty that the ideals of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness can become reality for anyone willing to work for them is what we call the American dream. For many, the dream does come true. For many it does not.

Lorraine Hansberry knew about disappointment, false hope, and despair. For many of her African-American ancestors who had come North for a better life only to find exploitation and frustration, the dream had become a nightmare. In contemporary terms, she chronicles their nightmare in A Raisin in the Sun, an epic story of the Younger family struggling to realize the dream by escaping ghetto life. Hansberrys screenplay not only tells the story of the Youngers but reveals the plight of all who have failed dreams.

Her cosmic vision gives Raisin its power. For high school juniors who often study U.S. history concurrently with American literature, this previously unpublished version of the screenplay allows students to read an engrossing American play, while they experience a culture that either mirrors their own lives or provides a window into a world of people who are more similar to them than they are different from them.

Raisin is an excellent choice for literature, drama, history, and film classes. There is plenty of action, salty dialogue, and a cast of dynamic characters to captivate even the most video-ed out teenager. Rebellion against parents and frustration with a lifestyle that brings little gratification are conditions most young people endure. However, beneath the cynical veneer of the adolescent beats the heart of an idealist who wants to believe in dreams that do come true. Through Hansberrys careful craftsmanship, the universal themes of the importance of dreams and the frustration of dreams deferred, the strength of family, the importance of not selling out, the problems of conflicting expectations, the belief that love and trust will win over deceit and selfishness, and the dangers of prejudice and stereotyping are as powerful today as they were nearly four decades ago when she wrote the play. Todays students, often from fractured families, need as much exposure as possible to values taught within a traditional family unit, and Raisin delivers without preaching.

Buy raisin in the sun term paper

Another reason for using Raisin is its historical value. The play is a provocative reflection of racial attitudes of the 150s and of today. Prejudice assumes many forms, and Hansberrys characters and the screenplays visuals bring this theme to life in a way no textbook could.

How has Edgar Allan Poes writing influenced detective stories? There have been many influential writers in the past but the one that stands out the most is Edgar Allan Poe. He has written many different pieces of literature ranging from love to murder. But in his murder stories there are many similar factors that emerge. It seems that for all of his murder and mystery type stories the killer always seems to find a way to give himself up. In a lot of his pieces, the police seem to perform very poor investigations but always seem to find out the truth through the killer being to cocky and pretty much giving himself up. For example in The Black Cat the main character was home free with his murder and became a little to confident and he told the police to come down stairs right by where he had the cat and his wife buried, he knocked on the wall, the cat made a noise and he got caught. A similar act happened in A Tell Tale Heart. This adds a little more suspense in the story and helps to serve for a more enjoying plot. Since Poe is such an influential writer, other writers look at his work and use his tactics of suspense in their stories, which occurs a lot in detective stories. Poe has really set the standard for the expectations on how detective stories are written. When writing a detective story it has become customary to refer to Poes work.

In the story Murders of the Rue Morgue by Edgar Allan Poe, two women were killed while occupying a fourth room of a house on Rue Morgue. It is hard to understand where the killer had exited the room because it appears to be completely locked from the inside and the police are having a hard time finding a motive on why someone would try to kill these two ladies. But Mr. Dupin, an investigator steps in and solves the case. To solve the mystery Mr. Dupin used a process of deduction, which is different to other Poe stories because his characters usually do very poor investigations of the murders. Mr. Dupin uncovered the killer to be an orangutan that had escaped its owner. This also showed how hard of an investigation the police and Mr. Dupin had to perform in order to have justice.

In the story The Adventures of the Speckled Band by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the inspector, Sherlock Holmes, had to find out who killed a young women in her home. It was hard for him to find out who the killer was because there was no hard evidence that there was force involved. His first theory was that a gypsy or a band of gypsys killed her but it did not make sense because this motive was missing some parts like she had no violent scars, or no sine of any kind of restraint so how would a person have killed her? He then was about to come to the conclusion that she died of a frightening disaster, but he decided to go se the victims sister who found her right before she died. She said that her sisters last words were speckled band, which led him back to believe that the gypsies killed her. Then she told him that she heard a clanking noise, which she did not know where it came from, so this put him in a state of serious confusement. A little later he found Dr. Grimesby Roylott (the victims step father) dead in the corner of the same house. He then remembered that the doctor had brought some animals from India over to study from. After that he discovered that the woman had a rope hanging from her ceiling in her room from her ventilator, which led him to the conclusion that the doctor was using a snake to climb down the rope to kill his stepdaughter. This snake was the most deadly in all of India, so when it bit people it left no marks on them but it killed them within seconds, which explains why his gypsy theory did not make sense with no marks. This also made sense because the victims last words were speckled band, which identifies the snake, and the clanking noise was identified as the snake in a safe after the doctor placed him in it. In this story Sherlock Holmes came up with many theories but narrowed it down by a process of elimination, which was also elevent in the story, the Murder of the Rue Morgue by Edgar Allan Poe. This alone shows that Edgar Allan Poe influenced other writers. When writing this story Doyle had to have had Poe in mind because he had a very similar investigation as in the Murder of the Rue Morgue.

The influence of these Poe stories on A. Conan Doyle was cardinal. Doyle himself publicly credits Poe; he modeled the Sherlock Holmes stories after Poes highly successfully formula for detective fiction in these three stories a detective of razor-sharp intellect, a bumbling narrator & a short-sighted police inspector. In The Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Mystery of Marie Roget, & The Purloined Letter, Poe stretches the possibilities of literature. Essential reading in the detective fiction genre.

Sex has played a huge part in our society today as a whole. Many people, especially teens, are overactive in sexual involvement. There are many outstanding sexual trends that occur throughout the world today that seem to be aimed precisely towards teenagers. The following question probes my mind as I think about sex in YK “What are the new and uprising teenage sexual behavioral trends from the 10’s until now?” Sexual activity is on the up rise simply because the general population is open and tolerant to teens having sex and society permits teens to act out in any shape, form, or fashion.

For instance, according to Marty Klein, Ph.D, societal developments affect sexuality in two ways directly and indirectly. Examples of direct influences include the invention of the birth control pill, the discovery of ovulation, and the invention of vasectomy. But events can also affect sex indirectly. For example, during World War II, the few young men who were left in America’s cities were suddenly a scarce commodity, and women started to compete for them. One way they did this was with sex-and quickly, initiating dates and being sexually aggressive became more culturally acceptable. (Klein)

Sex trends are like art movements. Sexual activity developments seem to simultaneously crop up in different locations. This is evidenced not only by mail, but also by anecdotes, television, and other types of entertainment. The past years from the 10s until now have contained direct aims towards sexual activities dealing with anal sex, which was considered to be an enjoyment. In addition, the threesome acts involving three persons of the same or opposite sex have increased in the world of sex. What next? Seven minutes in the closet?

Teenagers in YK partake in sexual acts by any means necessary. Besides the invention of anal sex and the threesome sex trends, there are hands-free vibrators, which are available in most sex shops. The hands-free vibrator is called the Magic Wand. It is called the Magic Wand simply because the user parts the legs slightly and places a pillow in between them, leaving a gap below the vagina and anchoring the vibrator in the gap and then turns it on.

Adolescents today are finding more and more ways to participate in sexual activity regardless of the risks. For example, according to Dr. Ron Read, while people are more aware of the importance of participating in ONLY ‘safe’ or ‘safer’ sexual activities, there is still confusion about what the words ‘safe’, ‘safer’, ‘unsafe’ and ‘risky’ mean when it comes to the spread of sexually transmitted disease (Read). Sex has become such a big part of the society today that teenagers are willing to take risks to participate in any unusual types of activities. As said by Dr. Ron Read, risky activities directed towards those that are not in long term relationships and free from STD’s include the following anal sex or vaginal sex without a condom, oral sex without a condom and sharing sex toys (Read).

Teenage sexual behavioral trends increase daily throughout the world. Sex trends range from the traditional intercourse to having three to four partners simultaneously. Teenagers seem to be unaware of the dangers of sexual activities without protection. Young people seem to become more and more curious day by day to experience sex in any method or manner to be apart of the “crowd”. There are many popular activities performed by teenagers today that engage sex, sex and more sex, such as the following cybersex, phone sex, pornography, entertainment shows, etc.

Sexual activity in YK pertaining to teens has been on the up rise since the 10s simply because of the lack of communication in the homes of teenagers. Parents need to talk to their adolescents about sex and stop putting the topic off until tomorrow. Tomorrow may be too late. Young people are learning more and more about sex at an earlier age day by day. Parents need to talk with their children about important values of abstinence and give them accurate information in regards to sex.

Parents today are focused on making money to pay the mortgage and they do not have enough time to ensure that young people are engaged in becoming productive citizens. Teenagers probably do not understand what abstaining from sex until marriage requires simply because society is hypocritical about sex because many adults are not participating in committed relationships and are not as good of a role model as expected.

Sexual trends are on the rise due to television and its X-rated material. Many teenagers obtain the ability to retrieve any type of sexual oriented products. According to Cheryl Wetzstein, the Center for Media and Public Affairs in Washington examined hundreds of TV episodes, movies, and MTV music videos for its report, “Sexual Imagery in Popular Entertainment”. It found that Broadcast TV shows averaged a sex scene every four minutes, while cable TV shows averaged a sex scene every five minutes. MTV’s music videos averted sex scenes per hour. The popular teen movie, “There’s Something About Mary”, had 5 sex scenes. Ten years ago, there were 6 references to sex in 180.5 hours of programming, according to the PTC. In 1, there were 4 references in 5.5 hours of programming, including 0 references to oral sex, a previously taboo subject on TV. (Wetzstein)

Sex and sexual entertainment does not have any prohibitions or bans that will keep teenagers away from the activities. There are too many producers of sex related “junk” that teenagers are allowed to get in their possession. For example, when walking into the pornography store, no one asked for any identification. This happens daily throughout the world simply due to the adults’ lack of responsibility. There are too many up to date technologies that pertain to sex, as said by Marty Klein, such as the following VCR- porn films, telephone- phone sex, photography- pornography, internet- cybersex, etc (Klein). Sex and sex entertainment is being developed in any way possible.

According to Jenny Bicks, seemingly impossible, sex will become even more rampant in this era. With drugs, dolls with lifelike gentalia and frank discussion readily available, sex will be completely accessible to the masses. Americans of all ages will take to their beds in droves…Armed with a pocket full of Viagra and a head full of consummated fantasies, even people who were previously labeled “bad in bed” will be taking to theirs. (Bicks) Sex is sex and many people are enjoying as much of it as possible in any capable manner.

Sexual trends continue to rise daily. From the 10s until now, there are direct and indirect aims towards sex and sex entertainment. Teenage sexual behaviors are increasing daily and they are becoming more concerned with sex than education. The general population is tolerant to activities, such as anal sex, oral sex, breast sex, etc. Society must teach adolescents the importance of morals, values, abstinence, and safe sex.

According to Kelly O’Meara, in the latter, an eighth-grade girl recounted a scenario that played out in her home with a boyfriend. “Let’s go to you room. You can give me some (engage in fellatio) and then we’ll go downstairs,” said the boy. To which she replied, “No, you’re nasty (O’Meara)!” It is unremarkable to observe the age that teenagers are sneaking partners in and out of their homes to have sex or almost have sex. What if her boyfriend would have raped her? Sexual trends are definitely developing more and more techniques daily that are very appealing to the teenage mind and senses. Sexual behaviors occur due to the individuals’ preference and moral values. As the new and upcoming sexual behavioral trends continue to occur throughout history, the following reasons are developed for the occurrence of these trends lack of self-esteem, not enough communication in the home, lack of prohibitions, and a lack of role models. Sexual behaviors may be categorized simply because it is an occurrence that is an issue in the world and with the homes of Americans that is discussed, at times, but constantly ignored.

Consider the Poets Views of War in the Poems Which you have Studied.

The first thing that will influence the reader is the title. “For the Fallen” makes me feel that the poem will be paying respect to the soldiers as I take the word “fallen” as meaning the soldiers descending to the ground on the battlefield. It makes me feel like the poem has been written for them rather than about them so it has greater depth. “Suicide in the Trenches” obviously is going to portray a bad view of the war as it means in other words that soldiers are killing themselves whilst in the trenches. I think this title is quite captivitive, as it seems like a headline you would see in the newspapers and it doesn’t give away any details of why there was a suicide, which encourages you to read on. “Dulce et Decorum Est”, the meaning of this poems full title is “Is it sweet and fitting to die for one’s country”. I feel making a statement is a good way of catching the readers attention. The statement gives the impression that the poem is going to be against fighting in the war as I get a slightly sarcastic influence from the title.

In “For the Fallen” the poet starts out praising the soldiers and says of how England mourns for them. It would influence any soldier material citizens to join up for the war, as the words used are very deep and meaningful, they also give the impression of it being a great deed to England for defending the country. I think the lines “Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit, fallen in the cause of the free” backs up my opinion as they are very strong meaningful words that make you feel a deep gratitude.

The author of “Suicide in the Trenches” has written the poem as if he was telling the actual story of what happened. This is a good way of making the reader feel more a part of the poem as it makes us feel like we are reading the thoughts of someone who knew the boy. Whereas “Dulce et Decorum Est” is written like the content of the poem actually happened to the poet so this lets us see what it was like from first hand experience.

Custom Essays on Consider the Poets Views of War in the Poems Which you have Studied.

All in all “For the Fallen” is exactly what we interpret from the title. It starts off praising the soldiers and showing us that the soldiers went “straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow” into battle. This makes the reader conjure a thought of the pride and the glory the soldiers hold as they face the enemy. However in “suicide in the Trenches” the line “In winter trenches, cowed and glum” clashes completely with the reader’s thoughts they gather from “For the Fallen”. It portrays not only a bad influence about being in the war but even an unbearable sense to it. We get the same kind of impression from “Dulce et Decorum Est”, especially from the lines “Bent double, like old beggars under sacks, knock-kneed, coughing like hags”. There is a very big contrast between the conditions portrayed in “For the Fallen” and the other two. “For the Fallen” was obviously written on the behalf of the people trying to get people enrolled into the war.

If the reader thought about the lines “ You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye who cheer when soldier lads march by” from “suicide in the trenches” it would perhaps play on the conscience of some people as they realise that the soldiers are out fighting on behalf of their country while they watch them. However reading the lines “To the innermost heart of their own land they are known as the stars are known to the night” from “For the Fallen” would perhaps make them jealous of all the glory everyone holds to the soldiers. By comparing the soldiers to “stars in the night” makes them be thought of as deeply important so would make people realise the gratitude they should have for them.

When I read through the whole content of “Dulce et Decorum Est” I found that I had discovered the true suffering of soldiers in war. The main influence to this thought was the last stanza of the poem that tells us of the reader pacing behind the wagon containing a soldier with a “hanging face” and “Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues”. These make us picture horrific images in our minds. The last few lines of the poem are very clever as the title was a question and the poet now says that we should not tell our children the lie of it being a good thing to die for the war, which was the question at the beginning. Another very effective part in this poem was “As under a green sea, I saw him drowning”. This is when the poet is describing when he has to watch a fellow soldier die from a gas attack. Using the words “green sea” gives us a vivid picture of what the poet saw from the inside of his gas mask. In the poem “For the Fallen” I feel the two lines containing “To the innermost heart of our their own land, they are known, as the stars are known to the sky” are a very good use of language as the lines are very sentimental and meaningful. In this poem I also find the word “desolation” very effective as it is one of those words, which you have to think about the meaning, and when you do, you discover it means “without hope, lonely” which makes you feel a great sympathy for the soldiers.

In “Dulce et Decorum Est” the word “sludge” gives me the impression of an endless trail of cold, thick mud that the soldiers have to plough through. When the poet uses “His hanging face, like a devil’s sick of sin” it makes me think of a dismal sagging face of a dead man, so I think this is a very good use of language for the reader to visualise the actual face.

When I read the words “lonesome dark” in “Suicide in the Trenches” it not only made me picture the blackness, but an empty, lonely blackness. The words “cowed and glum” make me imagine the misery the soldiers are suffering.

I thought all of the poets were extremely good at portraying their view on the war. If you had a strong view on the war one of them may be more appealing than the other however the poems are so well written that they may even change your view of it. There is a lot of controversy between the three poems, “Dulce et Decorum Est” and “Suicide in the Trenches” seem to be more against the war whereas “For the Fallen” is more for it. Each poet obviously had a strong opinion and decided to display that in the form of a poem. I think all the poems had deepness to them and have brought to the surface, a new view to looking what the soldiers will are letting themselves in for when signing up for the war.

Teen Smoking; the Final Frontier

The facts are right there on the pack Cigarette smoking causes lung cancer, heart disease and emphysema and may complicate pregnancy. Many teen smokers say that they regret beginning to smoke when such particulars are conveyed. However, most youth attribute their tendencies of smoking to the glamorization of smoking in the media, depression, and lastly easy access to tobacco. Yet, with all the facts about smoking at their disposal, “…every day almost 5,000 U.S. teens try cigarettes for the first time and about ,000 continue to become regular smokers…”

Therefore, the question remains, why exactly are teens lighting it up. Some speculate that many young people start smoking because of the glamorization of smoking on television, in the movies and in advertisements. When he was still alive, Joe Camel, the cigarette-smoking camel, was reported to be as familiar to 6-year-old children as Walt Disney’s Mickey Mouse. Youth are more impressionable as far as reacting to what they see and hear on the television. Hence, Joe Camel was the perfect marketing tool to attract the attention of teen worldwide. To counteract this practice the FDA stepped in and made a ruling. The FDA rule places restrictions on Tobacco Company marketing practices that targets large numbers of kids. For example, outdoor advertising will be banned within 1,000 feet of schools and playgrounds, and tobacco company sales or giveaways will be prohibited, as would tobacco company brand-name sponsorships of sporting or entertainment events. With this newly instituted plan, the FDA plans to substantially reduce the number of under age smoking amongst teens.

There are also a couple other factors of teen smoking. One is that smoking is associated with depression. Anxiety and low self-esteem in some cases parallel many teens’ usage tobacco products as a way to self-medicate. Smokings effect on the development of depression may be attributable “…to central nervous system effects of nicotine or other smoking by-products. [Continuing,] the effectiveness of antidepressants in smoking cessation, independent of previous or current depression, provides additional support for this view. While heavy cigarette use is not necessarily a result of depression, it has been said that other social factors do predict progression to heavy smoking. These include previous experimentation with tobacco products, poor school performance, peer tobacco use, and parental report of bad temper.

Custom writing service can write essays on Causes & effects of teen smoking

Finally, whatever their reason is, young people say they find it easy to obtain cigarettes despite laws banning the sale of tobacco to minors. Becoming aware of this, the Federal Government implemented new provisions. Vendors and shopkeepers caught selling or serving alcohol or tobacco-related products face a fine of $500 or imprisonment of up to 6 months. Minors who violate the ban are also held accountable and must pay a $0 fine, which will be doubled if the offence is repeated.

In short, there are many reasons behind teen smoking. It may be due to the glamorization smoking to the glamorization of smoking in the media, depression, or easy access to tobacco; the federal government is cracking down. This is most evident within the following recently instated ordinances and laws. The banning of vending machine sales and self-service displays except in places where minors are not allowed, such as certain bars and nightclubs, the prohibition of the sale of single or loose cigarettes and requires packages to contain at least twenty, and lastly the prohibiting of free giveaways of cigarettes or smokeless (spit) tobacco products. Our fast paced society offer us many new daily adventures and challenges. One would think that in the quest to survive as long as feasible that cigarette smoking would be a mere hindrance. However, where there is a will there is a way, and unless cigarette smoking is banned, it’s unfortunately to say the number of teenage smokers will probably skyrocket.

The Salem Witch Trials of 16 were one of the strangest and most awful chapters in human history. They were caused by a group of adolescent girls attempting to dabble in the supernatural. Because of them, the jails in Salem, Massachusetts were eventually filled with men and women accused of witchcraft and twenty people were hanged.

Most, if not all of those hanged, were innocent.

The beginning Act of this play is mainly about Abby and Betty. Betty is lying inert on the bed and Parris has sent for a witch-hunter. The girls were caught dancing in the woods. Parris thinks Betty has been bewitched. When Mr Hale (witch-hunter) arrives people are already suspecting others of witchcraft.

Although this scene begins calmly, the end is far from that. This scene draws to a close with Abby and Betty and all the other girls screaming the names of men and women they apparently saw with the devil.

The second Act is set mainly in the Proctor’s house. John and Elizabeth have a formal and cold chat. They are being civil to each other. When Mary Warren enters, she tells them of what has happened in the Court. Mary gives Elizabeth a poppet. Then, Cheevers enters, with a warrant for the arrest of Elizabeth. The reason for this is Abby fell to the floor earlier that day with a needle stuck in her belly. They found the poppet with a needle stuck in it. Elizabeth is then taken to jail and John orders Mary to go to Court with him the next day and confess that she and the girls are deceiving everyone.

The third Act begins in the vestry room of the Salem meeting house. Mary Warren confesses to the deception and John admits to having an affair with Abby. Danforth orders for Elizabeth to be sent for. When Elizabeth is asked if this is true, she denies it. Then Abby and the other girls pretend to see Mary’s spirit attacking them. They bully her into saying that John is an evil man that commutes with the Devil. When asked to confess this, in a rage he does so. He and Giles are arrested.

This end Act revolves mainly around John. He is placed in jail and Giles is pressed to death with stones. Rebecca Nurse and Martha Corey are condemned. When John is asked to sign a confession proving he commuted with the Devil, he rips it up- and is condemned to death.

This play has a similar pattern of tension in each act. They start calmly, then end with a dramatic climax. This helps to keep the audience captivated.

There is a lot of suspense at the end of this play. The audience is left unsure if John Proctor will hang. They are left unsure if Elizabeth will hang. They are left unsure about what happens to Abby. These are just a few uncertainties in this play.

Miller builds dramatic tension by having a dramatic ending to each Act. His generous stage directions make it easy to see how the play should be acted. Dramatic tension is also helped by the sinister yet unforgivable motives of the characters. The reasons for most of the accusations leading up to hanging is possession. Everyone wants something of someone else’s. Also, it is easier to blame things on the poor and the old, which is what we see here.

The most harrowing thing about this play is that this story is based on real-life events. People actually accused neighbours, friends, even family of commuting with the Devil. People didn’t think twice about condemning someone to death. They actually enjoyed watching it.

Youre stupid; you smell. You cant ever do anything right! Youre dirty, lazy and rude. You are truly nothing. My kind will always be better than yours. Why? Because Im white. Racism is a cruel disease and words like that should never be thought or spoken. Many people are tormented and teased because of their woman, or because theyre disabled or because their skin is a different color. Racism is a huge problem in the United States and it needs to be solved before this disease spreads and infects more and more people.

A main cause of racism is that some children are brought up by their parents to torment and batter their peers inside and outside of school. Children are great learners and many times if they see their parents tormenting another person or even saying vulgar things. Most children see this type of behavior when their young, and since their just starting out and learning they think that its okay to act in this manner. This kind of behavior towards someone who is different is wrong and has many negative effects. Racism leads to suicides, attempted suicides and homicides.

Another leading cause to racism is slavery. Slavery is a main reason that some whites always thought that they were superior to the black race. If slavery had never taken place, then maybe the world would respect everyone for who they are and not for the color of their skin. But that’s not the case. The case is that we have racism and we had to deal with slavery. Some of the white race was upset when slavery was put to an end and didn’t want blacks shopping at their local supermarkets, going to their local cinemas, using the same publish bathrooms as them, working in the same work areas as them, or having their children go to school with their children. So to stop the black race from being able to use these public places, the whites would put signs in their windows saying, Whites Only There were many great African American hero’s who stuck up for their kind, and took a stand for their human rights so that they would be treated the same as everyone else. Rosa Parks was one of the many famous African Americans hero’s who stood up for her rights. Instead of giving up her seat on the bus for a white Americans she decided to stay seated, she took a stand and didn’t get up out of her seat because she knew it was her right, even though at the time they didn’t exercise equal rights. If it wasn’t for Rosa parks (Biography.Com) or for the many other African Americans who stood up to the act of discrimination then there might still be signs in windows that say “Whites Only”

Jane Elliot was in her classroom one day and asked her students what they thought about the black race. She got this response, “Their dirty, their rude, they smell. They aren’t the same as us.” When Elliot heard this response she right away knew that she had to change something so that her students didn’t think this way about black people. This is when Elliot came up with her Brown-eyed, Blue-eyed Lesson (Drake). She split up her class into the brown-eyed group and the blue-eyed group. She treated one group with disrespect and the other group as if they were superior. By the end of the lesson many students were upset and hurt, but when Elliot revealed her reason for the essay they understood and didn’t feel as bad as they did when the lesson had started. Elliot’s lesson had changed many of her kids’ perspectives on the African American race.

Custom Essays on Color Means Nothing

In conclusion, there have been many attempts to change people’s perspectives on racism. Though not everyone is going to change their minds about racism, it is worth the effort to teach them that racism needs to be banished from our everyday lives. Yes, we are all the same, and yes we feel hurt and embarrassed when someone puts us down. The best way to teach that racism is wrong is to use Jane Elliot’s Brown-eyed, Blue-Eyed lesson (Drake). It really puts the abuser in the victims shoe to show them what they are doing is wrong, and with that they may think that, “hey, we are the same, and that there isn’t a difference between us other than our skin color.” Everyone should really try to learn from Elliot, and maybe try to go on and teach her lesson to other people. The Disease of racism spreads more and more everyday, lets come together and use a vaccination to stop this disease from harming more people than it needs to.

Relationship marketing requires the organisation to get to know its customers, their needs and their motivations. Based on this knowledge, the organisation then develops programs which are designed to increase the value of the customer to the organisation. These programs often include actions such as setting up loyalty schemes, pro-actively contacting customers to ensure satisfaction of developing special offers available to only certain categories of customers, all of which are focused on increasing the value of the customer to the organisation.

Relationship marketing is to identify and establish, maintain and enhance and, when necessary, also to terminate relationships with customers and other stakeholders, at a profit, so that the objectives of all parties are met, and that this is done by a mutual exchange and fulfilment of promises.

Core concepts of relationship marketing

The traditional approach of marketing which emphasises gaining new customers and larger market share as the key determinants to a successful business. Rather than pursuing each customer and transaction as a new event, the relationship marketer will attempts to develop and ongoing series of transactions with the consumer, to increase customer loyalty and reduce the need to acquire new customers.

Buy Domain of Relationship Marketing term paper

The emphasis on relationship marketing is based on a pair of key assumptions

The lifetime value of the customer. Ideally, as customers stay with the relationship, they will increase their value to the organisation, increase their rate of purchase and spread positive word of mouth to encourage new customers to join.

Customer loyalty. The theory assumes that the development of trust, commitment, and responsiveness will result in the customer feeling a reciprocal loyalty to the organisation and will not simply encourage the consumer to play one company off against another to maximise their personal gain.

Loyal customers are those individuals who exhibit both behavioural and psychological commitment to the organisation. Behavoiural commitment is exhibited through

Repeated buying from the one supplier when others exist

Increasing the amount of transactions with that supplier, either by purchasing more, or more frequent visits to the web site; or

Providing constructive feedback and suggestions.

Psychological commitment to the organisation is based around the mental processes associated with the development of a successful relationship. Consumers have established psychological commitment when they

Would not consider terminating the relationship, or using an alternative supplier

Engage in posititve word of mouth referral

Hold a positive attitude towards the supplier, relationship, and are experiencing beneficial outcomes from the exchange

Suitability for relationship marketing

Six points to determined when the relationship marketing paradigm is most suited for application

There is an ongoing or periodic desire for the service on the part of the customer (eg. Hairdressing)

The service customer controls the selection of the service supplier. The targeted customer for a relationship marketing campaign must be the person who ultimately makes the purchase decision.

There exists an alternative choice of supplier.

Brand switching is a common phenomenon (relationship marketing is a strategic alterative to price-based competition or cyclical sales promotions)

Word of mouth is an especially potent form of communicating about a product.

There is an ability to cross-sell products. The Internent provides an organisation with the capacity to develop a website with multiple layers of service options, product alternatives and content which can be cross-sold to enhance the user’s experience.

Web sites also have the opportunity to collect the requisite data for the development of personalised services and the formation of web-based relationship marketing.

Philosophical principles of relationship marketing

Three core principles which are consistently recognised as having the greatest impact are

Trust. This includes a belief in the trustworthiness of the partner, and the reliance on the other partner to perform.

Commitment. This is the perceived need to maintain the relationship, either because of the inherent value of staying, or because of the costs associated with leaving the exchange,

Reciprocity. This is basically the notion of equality and mutual obligation.

Trust

Developing trust is a major issue facing the online marketer. This is due to the relatively new nature of the Internet.

There are 5 processes by which trust can be formed in business relationships

Calculative processes, which try to second guess the value of cheating or defrauding the relationship. If the benefits of cheating do not outweigh the costs of being caught, then the parties to the transaction will be honest.

Prediction of future intent based on past behaviour, which uses the past actions of a party to determine the likelihood of acting in a fraudulent manner in the future (eg. Credit rating)

Credibility, which is where trust is derived from the capability and capacity of the other party to deliver on their promises. Web sites which offer sample downloads, trial products, peer reviews and user ratings all provide indications of the credibility of the organisation to deliver on their promise.

Motive assessment, which is based on interpreting the motives of the transaction partner.

Transference process, which works on the principle of word of mouth, third party referral and trust by recommendation. The Internet has provided a range of systems and services for the ranking and rating of third party groups.

Trust in the online environment is particularly important before an initial transaction occurs, let alone as a part of developing an ongoing relationship. Although trust along does not gain the sale, it is a major factor in getting to the point of consideration for purchase.

Commitment

Trust is a key element to the formation and continuity of the relationship, whereas commitment is more towards the operationalisation of the contractual obligation. Commitment is dependent on a range of factors, such as

Service and product quality.

Satisfaction, which is the degree to which the relationship continues to meet the needs of the organisations involved. It differs from service quality in that a high quality service can still provide an unsatisfactory experience and still be grounds for departing the relationship.

• Commitment has an impact in the following areas

• Intentions to stay in the relationship.

• Desire to stay in the relationship.

• Performance of the relationship.

• Willingness to invest in the relationship.

• Development of alternatives.

• Opportunistic behaviour.

For online marketers, the lesson to learn from commitment is to not only continue to balance the P & L sheets of the relationship, but to also trust instinctive desires to maintain commitment. Online relationship marketers need to have a longer-term focus, rather than simply using Internet relationships as short-term opportunistic events.

Reciprocity

The key to reciprocity is that the totality of the exchanges must balance over the course of the relationship, which means that the individual exchanges can favour one partner or the other providing that the overall outcomes remain equal. In addition, the basis for reciprocity can move beyond simple financial transactions to include such functions as

Increasing stability by reducing risk and uncertainty

Establishing legitimacy

Increasing effective and efficient resource usage

Accessing resources not currently available to the organisation.

RELATIONSHIP MARKETING ONLINE

Three levels of relationship marketing

Tactics

Tactical level application of relationship marketing is aimed at the initial recruitment and development of the relationship whereby incentives are offered to the consumer for their initial involvement with the company (e.g. 0 days free access to a subscription function).

For the most part, these are not designed to develop trust nor enhance credibility, and they are not presented as tools of commitment and reciprocity. They aim to get the user from pre-purchase to purchase, or to shift from their current relationship to the new provider.

The Usual Suspect

This movie, The Usual Suspect was not presented in an usual style, the plot was not completely revealed on the scene, it is a movie that led the viewers to think deeply in order to puzzle the plot together. The director of The Usual Suspect Bryan Singer presented the movie with an extreme fragmented sequence, which helped create a high sense of mystery to the viewers. There was also a significant symbolic quote that tied together different fragments of the plot “The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist.”

The movie began and ended with the same scene, the primary sequence of this movie was created in a cycle. Verbal then began to recite the story to the Kujan in the police station; through out this recital, the director incorporated many flash backs and showed the actual crime scenes as it replayed in Verbal’s mind. Although in reality it is a very logical sequence in one’s mind; but in a movie, all the fragmentation jumping around created manyconfusions for the audience. Therefore, thinking is a mandatory requirement to understand this movie. Other then fragmentation that distracted the viewers from the plot, it also created suspense to the movie.

A symbolic quote from the movie “ The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world that he didn’t exist.”, this quote is a very significant quote that revealed the whole mystery. This quote was said by Verbal, who obviously said this to mislead the police. The symbolic nature is himself, the devil is sitting in a police station fooling with the cop’s mind; convincing the cop that he, himself does not exist. Yet, the police completely fell for it and totally thought he was an useless crippled man used by the smartest criminal. Verbal was the most wanted criminal Keyser Soze, sitting in a police station telling the crime to the police. He, himself as Keyser Soze had totally control over the police’s mind. As Soze walked out of the police station, Kujan suddenly recalls this quote and all the fragments from the movie was quickly puzzling together to revealed that they had Soze in their hands and they just they him walked out as a free man.

Order custom research paper on The Ususal suspect

Bryan’s method was probably the best way to present this movie because all the fragments from the movie ties together to reveal the mystery, while though out the movie it requires a lot of thinking. Also all the fragmentation is very symbolic, such as the effective conclusion he created from a crippled man slowing walking out of the police station and his walking eventually progressed into straight walking like any other normal man. The smartest criminal walked out from a police station after being questioned by an expert investigator as a freeman. This movie was fragmented effective enough to led the audience into the movie and revealed the whole mystery of the movie in the last five minutes of the movie.

Lots of people think that if you lose something, that it will be lost forever. To me, nothing is ever really lost; the things you have or own will always be with you, maybe not physically but always in your memory. And yes, when you lose things like a family member, a pet or friend, it is comforting to look at the good times. But we also look at the bad times because talking from experience with my dads’ death, looking at just the good things doesn’t help as much as looking at both. For instance, when I think of my mom, I don’t just look at the good she does for me, I look at the things I don’t like that she does, because if you only look at the good things it’s like looking at something fake or not true.

The way I look at my dad’s death is that I lost someone that I never really got to know as much as I wanted to. But in a way it made me look at life differently and see how everything is never perfect, life does not always go the way you want them too. Through my dad’s death, I think that I have matured and now have a sense that fate has somewhat a control of my life. Also even though my brother and sister had more years with my dad, I had a closer relationship with him. Since I was the youngest, he paid more attention to me because my sister and brother were in high school at the time. I am glad that I had that -year relationship with one of the best dads in the world who always put his family first no matter what the situation was.

The way my dad passed away was he was on his bike riding home from the grocery store. He was on Lighthouse Ave. and there was a car wanting to turn left on to Cedar St.. So my dad was about to go around the car when all of a sudden a car hit him from behind and knocked him of his bike and he landed on his head and killed him instantly. The guy who hit him was on drugs and was intoxicated and passed out, and his girlfriend was trying to wake him up, but by trying to they hit my dad and was too late.

Custom Essays on death

People go through different ways of dealing with death. Some accept it and try to go on their lives; some deny everything about it and never want to face the fact that the person has passed away. At first I was in denial and always asking myself “why me? What did I do? What did he do to deserve this?” Finally after 7 years I got some help, I decided to see a psychologist. His name is Ron. I saw him for almost two years and all the help he gave me really worked. He helped me realize that its not anyone’s fault and that if you do have a problem and just ignore it, your problem will just eat you up inside and ruin you. Now after those two years I accept my dad’s death and see that death is not only bad but it also good. It brings people together to share the love they have for that special someone.

Ron’s impact on my life was very big. He influenced me to want to become a psychologist and help people like he did for me. Nothing is ever really lost, unless forgotten about, and if you do loose someone think of the good and the bad times that you and that someone has gone through.

The things that Shakespeare talked about are still relevant today. Some things such as

Stereotypes, racism, love and relationships, sexism, hate crimes and discrimination.

In Romeo and Juliet there are complex relationships and how family feuds negatively

affected Romeo and Juliet in the end with the death of both. The deaths were do to the

love that they could not have because of the two families feuds. The deaths were a cause

of discrimination also, if Juliet’s family had excepted Romeo for who he was then they

could have been very happy together. This is relevant today because lots of people are

committing suicide over things such as break ups and arguments with in a family and also

of denial. This also shows how two peoples misery can lead to many more things that are

wrong for example the two families were in a long battle and had never had it resolved

this affected the lives of Romeo and Juliet. In the merchant of Venice there are many

derogatory statements about Jews being more interested in trade and money rather then

other things such as friends and family. They are stating that they value money higher

than anything else. This is showing racism, racism is still extremely relevant in today’s

society. For example September 11 has made a huge racism against people in the middle

east. In Hamlet Shakespeare is talking about incest and also the complexities of family

Relationships, especially the one between Hamlet and his mother. This relates to today by

symbolizing things other that just what is right and wrong. Gays and other things have to

be accepted as well. In the play King Lear Shakespeare explores weaknesses of a great

man and the disappointments with his daughters. He looked on the outside like a very

powerful king but on the inside he was weak with pain that his daughters did not love him

like he wished. The things relevant in

Shakespeare’s time is very relevant today, these things give examples to why not to judge

As a child, children learn about their culture’’s ideals of life through fairy tales and fables; ideals about love, relationships and expectations. When looking at modern literature, the ideals from fairy tales and fable are less prominent. Alice Major’’s Puce Fairy Tale, a poem about disproving the fairy tale expectations in relationship. June Callwood’’s Forget Prince Charming an essay about dispelling the fairy tale belief of the perfect mate. James Harrison’’s Cinderella/from Eve’’s Version a poem which disproves the fairy tale way of life, the opposite to what is hoped. With the Author’’s modern perspectives, the ideals expressed in fairy tales seem flawed. Through the effective use of literary and rhetorical devices, the three literary works show the ideals from fairy tales are less favourable for today’’s society.

Callwood’’s believes the perfect fairy tale mate does not exist because everyone has flaws, and fallacies. She used the metaphor bed rock of empathy(Callwood, ) to show how a relationship should be built on empathy, instead of a fairy tale expectation, that can lead to self-deprivation. Also Callwood uses balanced structures, loyalty and kindness (Callwood, ) and love and fulfillment (Callwood, ), to show that for a relationship to work out, there needs to be loyalty in the face of adversity. Kindness when a partner does wrong. Love for one another and a respect for the differences, which bring partners together. Fulfillment know that you relationship will last. The partners have to be true to themselves, before they can be true to one another. Though a fairy tale relationship would be nice, it is highly unlikely to occur.

Harrison’’s believes the life based on fairy tale ideals would be meaningless existence. He uses the rhetorical question What could I ever ask for more? (Harrison l.8) the question implies the Eve is unhappy with the life she lives because everything’’s provided for her. Eve also believes that she should be happy, but she is unhappy. The simile like a dime in a paperweight (Harrison l. 15) describes a microcosm of her life. The paperweight is the representation of having everything, squashing all other possibilities for happiness because she has everything. The brittle slipper (Harrison l. 1) is an allusion to Cinderella. There is a comparison of eve’’s life and Cinderella’’s perfect existence. From it one can see that when a person has it all, they are truly unhappy, because they have nothing to strive for. The ideal of fairy tale existence is not the kind of existence that a modern society should strive for because the society will be come dull.

Major believes that fairy tale ideal that one can change another can lead to broken relationships, is illogical. Major uses allusion of Cinderella crystal slipper (Major, l. 17) to show what she feels is perfection, the happily ever after. However, to show that the humans are fallible she used double entendre, Other Princes had made it through my forest (Major l. 8) , to emphasizes the so-called Princes expectation for the clean, never been kissed (Major l. 7) Princess but, this device also shows fallacy because every human gives in to their primal desires, in this case Lust. However, to really emphasize Major’’s thesis, she uses periodicity. I declined, with thanks, the honour of cutting off my toe. (Major, l.4) this show that when the significant other wants his/her counterpart to change it is better to be yourself then to cut off you toe to fit into the glass slipper of the expectations. When asked to conform to expectations based on a fairy tale belief, one should be oneself.

Buy Through the effective use of literary and rhetorical devices, the three literary works show the ideals from fairy tales are less favourable for today’’s society. term paper

Modern Society does not conform to Fairly Tale Beliefs/ Ideals. As shown though the uses of literary and rhetorical devices in modern literature. Major’’s Puce Fairy Book dispels fairy tale expectations in a relationship. Callwood’’s Forget Prince Charming disproves the belief of the perfect fairy tale mate. Harrison’’s Cinderella/Eves Version disproves the fairy tale life. By learning from the beliefs and ideals of fairy tales, a modern society can learn to grow and foster a better understanding for one another. Thus, fairy tales teach a society invaluable lessons.

A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man is the story of Stephen Dedalus. It is through Stephen that we see his world, and it is his expansion from sensitive child to rebellious young man that forms the plot of the novel. There are many Stephens, often contradictory. He is fearful yet brave, insecure yet proud, lonely and at the same time afraid of love. One Stephen is a romantic who daydreams of boasting heroes and virginal heroines. The other is a practical person at home on Dublins most squalid streets. One Stephen is too shy to kiss the young lady he yearns for the other readily turns to prostitutes to satisfy his sexual urges. One is an apprehensive outsider bullied by his classmates the other is courageous enough to confront and question authority. One earnestly hopes to become a priest and the other scornfully rejects religion. But why is Stephen so contradicting? Perhaps it is because of the people that his character is based on. Stephen is made up of three personalities Saint Stephen who was the first Christian martyr and represents Stephen’s psyche, Charles Stewart Parnell who wanted a united Ireland and represents Stephen’s Irish nationality which prevents him from being artistic, and Daedalus who was an amazing mythological artist who represents the artist in Stephen. With three very conflicting personalities it is no revelation that Stephen would be a very contradictory figure in literature.

Saint Stephen is the first Christian martyr. In the days after the Ascension and Pentecost, the numbers of disciples grew so large that the apostles had no time to concentrate on prayer and the ministry of the Word. So the disciples assembled the community and told them to choose seven men to be deacons. These deacons were a group called the Libertines who tried to argue with Saint Stephen. But when they could not win any debates with him, they found false witnesses to accuse him of blasphemy to the Sanhedrin. At Saint Stephens trial, he was given the opportunity to answer the charges laid against him. At this point, he could have apologized, told the court that he was wrong and promised to never talk about Jesus again. Instead, he delivered a powerful homily and witness of his faith and was stoned to death for his beliefs. Saint Stephen’s personality comes through in Stephen through his psyche. Saint Stephen is a martyr and so is Stephen. They would both die for what they believe in, and is Stephen’s case this would be his art. It is the only thing in his life that he has always been able to have faith in. At the end of the book Stephen has found his voice and is finally comfortable in the person that he has become.

Daedalus was a famous mythological architect, inventor, and master craftsman. Daedalus built wings for himself and Icarus, fashioned with feathers held together with wax. Daedalus warned his son not to fly too close to the sun, as it would melt his wings, and not too close to the sea, as it would dampen them and make it hard to fly. They flew from Crete, but Icarus grew exhilarated by the thrill of flying and began getting careless. Flying too close to the sun, the wax holding together his wings melted from the heat and he fell to his death, drowning in the sea. Stephen is seen through the personality of Daedalus throughout A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, through flight imagery and also through the artist in Stephen. On page 176 Stephen has an epiphany while looking at a girl in the sea. He sees this beautiful girl as art and also refers to her a “bird”.

Her slateblue skirts were kilted boldly about her waist and dovetailed behind her. Her bosom was as a bird’s soft and slight, slight and soft as the breast of some darkplumaged dove. But her long fair hair was girlish and girlish, and touched with the wonder of mortal beauty, her face.

Stephen uses bird imagery and also his artistic voice to describe a woman that before his revelation he would otherwise view as only a sexual being.

The last person that makes up Stephen’s personality is Charles Stewart Parnell. Parnell is not fictional but rather an Irish political leader, he is a polarizing figure whose death influences many characters in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Parnell had been the powerful leader of the Irish National Party, and his influence seemed to promise Irish independence from England. When Parnells affair with a married woman was exposed he was condemned by the Catholic Church and fell from grace. His fevered attempts to regain his former position of influence contributed to his death from exhaustion. Many people in Ireland considered Parnell a hero and blamed the church for his death. Others thought the church had done the right thing to condemn Parnell. These disputes over Parnells character are at the root of the bitter argument that erupts during the Dedalus familys Christmas dinner when Stephen is still a young boy. In this sense, Parnell represents the burden of Irish nationality that Stephen comes to believe is preventing him from realizing himself as an artist. On page 5 he tells the reader through his journal that he has finally found what his life is destined to be.

6 April Mother is putting out me new second hand clothes in order. She prays now, she says, that I may learn in my own life and away from home and friends what the heart is and what it feels. Amen. So be it. Welcome, O life! I go to encounter for the millionth time the reality of experience and to forge in the smithy of my soul the uncreated conscience of my race.

Stephen has used his Irish nationality to create the person that he will become later in life. He is finally comfortable as himself, as an artist.

Stephen although complex and very contradictory is simply made up of three different, very extreme personalities. The first, a Christian martyr, Saint Stephen, the second Daedalus a mythological creator and inventor, and the third the non-fictional Charles Stewart Parnell, an Irish Political leader. Stephen comes to a revelation at the end of the novel that he is content the way he is and that he does not have to change the way that he is to make others happy. A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man shows Stephen grow up and go through phases just as any other young man. By using Saint Stephen, Daedalus, and Parnell James Joyce makes Stephen a very applicable compound character.

Of all the scientists to emerge from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries there is one whose name is known by almost all living people. While most of these do not understand this mans work, everyone knows that its impact on the world of science is astonishing. Yes, many have heard of Albert Einsteins General Theory of relativity, but few know about the intriguing life that led this scientist to discover what some have called, The greatest single achievement of human thought.

Einstein was born in Ulm, Germany on March 14, 1874. Before his first birthday, his family had moved to Munich where young Alberts father, Hermann Einstein, and uncle set up a small electro-chemical business. He was fortunate to have an excellent family with which he held a strong relationship. Alberts mother, Pauline Einstein, had an intense passion for music and literature, and it was she that first introduced her son to the violin in which he found much joy and relaxation. Also, he was very close with his younger sister, Maja, and hey could often be found in the lakes that were scattered about the countryside near Munich.

As a child, Einsteins sense of curiosity had already begun to stir. A favorite toy of his was his fathers compass, and he often marvelled at his uncles explanations of algebra. Although young Albert was intrigued by certain mysteries of science, he was considered a slow learner. His failure to become fluent in German until the age of nine even led some teachersto believe he was disabled.

Einsteins post-basic education began at the Luitpold Gymnasium when he was ten. It was here that he first encountered the German spirit through the schools strict disciplinary policy. His disapproval of this method of teaching led to his reputation as a rebel. It was probably these differences that caused Einstein to search for knowledge at home. He began not with science, but with religion. He avidly studied the Bible seeking truth, but this religious fervor soon died down when he discovered the intrigue of science and math. To him, these seemed much more realistic than ancient stories. With this new knowledge he disliked class even more, and was eventually expelled from Luitpold Gymnasium being considered a disruptive influence.

Feeling that he could no longer deal with the German mentality, Einstein moved to Switzerland where he continued his education. At sixteen he attempted to enroll at the Federal Institute of Technology but failed the entrance exam. This forced him to study locally for one year until he finally passed the schools evaluation. The Institute allowed Einstein to meet many other students that shared his curiosity, and It was here that his studies turned mainly to Physics. He quickly learned that while Physicists had generally agreed on major principals in the past, there were modern scientists who were attempting to disprove outdated theories. Since most of Einsteins teachers ignored these new ideas, he was again forced to explore on his own. In 100 he graduated from the Institute and then achieved citizenship to Switzerland.

Einstein became a clerk at the Swiss Patent Office in 10. This job had little to do with physics, but he was able to satiate his curiosity by figuring out how new inventions worked. The most important part of Einsteins occupation was that it allowed him enough time to pursue his own line of research. As his ideas began to develop, he published them in specialist journals. Though he was still unknown to the scientific world, he began to attract a large circle of friends and admirers. A group of students that he tutored quickly transformed into a social club that shared a love of nature, music, and of course, science. In 10 he married Mileva Meric, a mathematician friend.

In 105, Einstein published five separate papers in a journal, the Annals of Physics. The first was immediately acknowledged, and the University of Zurich awarded Einstein an additional degree. The other papers helped to develop modern physics and earned him the reputation of an artist. Many scientists have said that Einsteins work contained an imaginative spirit that was seen in most poetry. His work at this time dealt with molecules, and how their motion affected temperature, but he is most well known for his Special Theory of Relativity which tackled motion and the speed of light. Perhaps the most important part of his discoveries was the equation E=mc.

After publishing these theories Einstein was promoted at his office. He remained at the Patents Office for another two years, but his name was becoming too big among the scientific community. In 108, Einstein began teaching party time at the University of Berne, and the following year, at the age of thirty, he became employed full time by Zurich University. Einstein was now able to move to Prague with his wife and two sons, Hans Albert and Eduard. Finally, after being promoted to a professor, Einstein and his family were able to enjoy a good standard of living, but the jobs main advantage was that it allowed Einstein to access an enormous library. It was here that he extended his theory and discussed it with the leading scientists of Europe. In 11 he chose to accept a job placing him in high authority at the Federal Institute of Technology, where he had originally studied. It was not until 114 that Einstein was tempted to return to Germany to become research director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Physics.

World War I had a strong effect on Einstein. While the rest of Germany supported the army, he felt the war was unnecessary, and disgusting. The new weapons of war which attempted to

mass slaughter people caused him to devote much of his life toward creating peace. Toward the end of the war Einstein joined a political party that worked to end the war, and return peace to Europe. In 116 this party was outlawed by the government, and Einstein was seen as a traitor.

In that same year, Einstein published his General Theory of relativity, This result of ten years work revolutionized physics. It basically stated that the universe had to be thought of as curved, and told how light was affected by this. The next year, Einstein published another paper that added that the universe had no boundary, but actually twisted back on its self. After the war, many aspects of Einsteins life changed. He divorced his wife, who had been living in Zurich with the children throughout the war, and married his cousin Elsa Lowenthal. This led to a renewed interest in his Jewish roots, and he became an active supporter of Zionism. Since anti-Semitism was growing in Germany, he quickly became the target of prejudice. There were many rumors about groups who were trying to kill Einstein, and he began to travel extensively. The biggest change, though, was in 11 when scientist who studied an eclipse confirmed that his theories were correct.

In 11, he traveled through Britain and the United States raising funds for Zionism and lecturing about his theories. He also visited the battle sites of the war, and urged that Europe renew scientific and cultural links. He promoted non-patriotic, non-competitive education, believing that it would prevent war from happening in the future. He also believed that socialism would help the world achieve peace.

Einstein received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1. He gave all the money to his ex-wife and children to help with their lives and education. After another lecture tour, he visited Palestine for the opening the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He also talked about the possibilities that Palestine held for the Jewish people. Upon his return he began to enjoy a calmer life in which he returned to his original curiosity, religion.

While Einstein was visiting America in 1 the Nazi party came to power in Germany. Again he was subject to anti-Semitic attacks, but this time his house was broken into, and he was publicly considered an enemy of the nation. It was obvious that he could not return to Germany, and for the second time he renounced his German citizenship. During these early years in America he did some research at Princeton, but did not accomplish much of significance.

In 1 the second World War began to take form. There was heated argument during this time over whether the United States should explore the idea of an atomic bomb. Einstein wrote to President Roosevelt warning him of the disaster that could occur

if the Nazis developed it first. Einstein did not participate in the development of the bomb, but the idea did stem from his equation E=mc. Just as he knew that the bomb was under development, he also knew when it was going to be used. Just before the bomb was dropped on Japan. Einstein wrote a letter to the President begging him not to use this terrible weapon. The rest of Einsteins life was dedicated to promoting peace. After the war ended, he declared, The war is won, but the peace is not. He wrote many articles and made many speeches calling for a world government. His fame, at this point, was legendary. People from all over would write to him for advice, and he would often answer them. He also continued his scientific research until the day he died. This was on April 18, 155. There is no doubt that he was dissatisfied that he never was able to find the true meaning of existence that he strove for all his life.
